This collection brings together white recessed downlights designed for living rooms and hallways, mostly in aluminium, round, square or double adjustable. The choice comes down to three points: the socket, the ingress protection rating and the light temperature.

Which recessed downlights should you choose?

The choice first comes down to the socket: a GU10 downlight keeps a replaceable bulb, while an integrated LED model is replaced as a single unit. Then come the ingress protection rating, the ceiling dimension and the shape, round or square, depending on the style of the room.

White LED recessed downlight: what the finish changes

White covers the whole selection and aluminium makes up most of the bodies. On a painted ceiling, the trim disappears and only the light remains visible. The Calira at Ø 14 cm covers a wide area, the Oribi at Ø 6.8 cm keeps a low profile, the Orio softens the beam with its diffuser. An adjustable model can then be aimed without reopening the ceiling. White linear recessed lights, absent from this collection, are available in other ranges in the shop.

Recessed downlights by colour: white, black or gold on the ceiling

White is the most neutral colour in the selection. The black ring versions and the gold finish make the fixture visible instead: best kept for rooms where the downlight is part of the decor.

Available sockets and what they mean
Socket Type of source What it changes
GU10 Replaceable bulb The bulb is replaced on its own, the fixture stays
Integrated LED Non-replaceable source The whole downlight is changed if it dims
GX53 Flat replaceable bulb Flat format housed under the ceiling

How should downlights be laid out on the ceiling?

You start from the areas to be lit, not from a ready-made ratio: a worktop, a sofa, a mirror, a stretch of hallway. The points are spread in regular lines, away from the walls to avoid shadows, and aimed where the model allows it.

Spacing downlights in a hallway or living area

In a hallway, a single centred line is enough and avoids a wall of light. In a living area, the points are aligned with the furniture rather than with the room: the rows follow the sofa and the walkway, not the ceiling layout. To light a living room, the recessed lights designed for living areas combine with tighter points above a worktop, to be picked from the ones specially designed for kitchens.

Aiming downlights rather than multiplying them

A well-placed adjustable point replaces two fixed ones: it targets a wall, a shelf or a piece of art. The adjustable recessed downlights and the directional recessed LEDs thus avoid drilling more holes, and the Onix double recessed light concentrates two spotlights in a single cut-out.

What LED downlight wattage should you choose to light my living room?

In the collection, wattages range from 5 to 20 W, from the 5 W of the Mirane to the 20 W of the Onix, with several 10 W models.

How many watts per light point?

A 5 or 6 W point such as the Mirane or the Celian is enough for an accent wall or a passage. A 10 to 12 W such as the Blancor or the Ulyssa handles general lighting. Beyond that, the wattage only serves to cover a great height or a double spotlight: better to add a point than to raise the watts.

Wattage and light temperature, the right pairing

Wattage says nothing about colour. Warm white 2700 to 3500 K gives a more golden light, neutral white 3500 to 4500 K a whiter light. The choice is made according to the desired mood, not according to the watts.

How many downlights are needed for a 40 m2 room?

There is no single number: it depends on the ceiling, the shade of the walls and the use of each area. The reliable method is to count the areas to be lit, seating corner, walkway, accent wall, then to distribute the points, even if that means choosing adjustable models.

Counting the areas to be lit before counting the downlights

A dark ceiling, an attic room or a dark wall absorb light and require one more point. Conversely, light walls and a low ceiling reflect it and need fewer points. So you draw a grid per area, not a grid for the room.

Large room: multiply the points rather than raise the watts

A large format covers more surface: in the collection, the round ones go from Ø 4 cm for the Mirane to Ø 14 cm for the Calira, the square ones from 8.5 x 8.5 cm for the Blancor to 12.6 x 12.6 cm for the Mirka. Better to have several distributed sources than a single very powerful one, which creates a hot spot and leaves the rest of the ceiling in shadow.

Shapes, measured dimensions and suitable rooms
Shape Measured dimensions Examples from the collection
Round from Ø 4 cm to Ø 14 cm Mirane Ø 4, Celian Ø 6, Orio Ø 6.8, Sylvara Ø 8.5, Calira Ø 14
Square from 8.5 x 8.5 cm to 12.6 x 12.6 cm Blancor 8.5, Bonaventura 9.5, Mirka 12.6
Double 9.5 x 19.4 cm and 11.2 x 11.2 cm Onix, Lunsameta

What is the best recessed downlight for a bathroom?

In a damp room, you look at the ingress protection rating first: the collection includes white IP65 recessed lights, among them Blancor, Sylvara, Ulyssa and Celian, the best protected against humidity. IP20 and IP44 models remain suitable for the dry areas of a home.

IP20, IP44, IP65: read the rating before choosing

IP20 covers most of the selection and suits dry rooms, a hallway for example. IP44 protects against splashes, IP65 also withstands ambient humidity and can be cleaned. The Sylvara in neutral white and the Ulyssa can be placed near a mirror or a shower; outdoors, better to turn to a white outdoor downlight, whose protection is designed for rain.

Warm or neutral light in a wet room

A warm light 2700 to 3500 K flatters the complexion in front of a mirror and relaxes at the end of the day. Neutral 3500 to 4500 K gives a truer rendering for care areas. The points in the same room are harmonised to avoid a visible mix.

Is a recessed downlight cover mandatory?

It all depends on the surface, not the downlight: on an insulated ceiling or one made of combustible material, the installer often adds a housing around the fixture. This point is settled during installation. To choose the model, the useful criteria remain the socket, the ingress protection rating and the diameter.

Cover and insulated ceiling: an installation decision

A plasterboard ceiling, a wooden ceiling or a layer of blown insulation are not treated the same way. The housing then goes with the fixture without changing its light output. This question is settled on site, once the surface is known.

What guides the choice: socket, ingress protection rating, diameter

The socket decides maintenance, the ingress protection rating the room, the diameter the cut-out and the look on the ceiling. The sets of white downlights in all finishes let you compare these three criteria at a glance before confirming.

Does a white recessed downlight go with every decor?

White disappears into a painted ceiling and stands out on a wooden ceiling: it is the most neutral colour in the collection, present on every model. Black rings, dark trims and gold reflectors create a deliberate contrast instead.

White recessed downlights on a white or wooden ceiling

On a ceiling painted white or in a light shade, the trim blends in and the ceiling stays clean, punctuated only by the light points. On a wooden ceiling, white marks the contrast and becomes a graphic element: the downlights are then aligned carefully, because any offset shows.

Black trim, gold reflector: when to embrace contrast

A black rim as on the Mirka underlines the geometry of the ceiling. A gold reflector as on the Lorsamara warms the light. To go further, the black downlights and the more design-led pieces open other directions, while the adjustable models in white keep the discretion of the colour.

What is the lifespan of a recessed LED downlight?

It depends on the assembly: a recessed light with a GU10 or GX53 socket has its bulb replaced without touching the fixture, while a model with integrated LED is changed entirely the day it dims. It is a criterion to know before any work, as much as the wattage.

Replace the bulb or change the whole downlight?

A replaceable socket leaves the choice of bulb, its temperature and its intensity, and is repaired part by part. An integrated source means buying the fixture again in case of failure, but keeps a consistent set and a thinner profile. Both approaches coexist in the selection, including among the ones specially designed as LED.

Routine care of a white recessed light

A soft cloth is enough to dust the trim; abrasive products that dull the white are avoided. A point that dims or changes shade signals the end of life of the source. To control the intensity, the dimmer-compatible versions are the only ones to consider.

Frequently asked questions

Which recessed downlights should you choose?

Start with the socket: GU10 if you want to replace the bulb yourself, integrated LED if you prefer a single unit. Then look at the ingress protection rating depending on the room, then the dimension and the shape. The white recessed lights in the collection are mostly made of aluminium.

White LED recessed downlight: how do you choose one?

The white colour covers the whole collection. What varies is the shape, round, square or double, the diameter measured on the ceiling, from Ø 4 cm to Ø 14 cm, the socket and the ingress protection rating. Choose the use first, the colour comes next.

White recessed downlights: are there adjustable models?

Yes: Orientis, Lunaro, Onix and Lunsameta allow the light to be aimed, and Onix and Lunsameta both have two spotlights. Adjustability is used to target a wall, a worktop or a piece of art without moving the fixture or redoing the ceiling.

Does a white recessed downlight work with a dimmer?

Only a small number of models are dimmer-compatible, including Ulyssa. Check this point before buying: a downlight not designed for dimming cannot be controlled by a dimmer, and the result also depends on the dimmer installed and the bulb used.

Do you need an IP65 or IP20 downlight in a hallway?

A dry hallway is fine with an IP20 rating, the most common in the collection. IP65 is justified in a damp room or one exposed to splashes. The hallway is suitable for almost all white recessed lights, whatever their protection.
