Three criteria matter before anything else: how exposed the wall is, the model's protection rating and the type of socket. An aluminium outdoor wall light on a sheltered facade does not have the same needs as a wall lashed by rain, and the choice of bulb decides the light you get.
Which is the best outdoor wall light?
There is no single wall light better than the rest, only a model suited to the place where it will be fitted. On a sheltered wall, an IP54 model is enough. On a facade heavily exposed to rain, an IP65 model with integrated LED needs less maintenance. The socket and the colour are chosen afterwards.
Aluminium outdoor wall light: what the material changes
An aluminium body keeps its lines without protective paint and stays light on the facade. Two opposite profiles exist here: the Faro twin-beam wall light, 6 W LED in IP54, 10 cm high. Conversely, the Bold model with an E27 socket, 60 W in IP54, lets you choose the bulb and gives a 20 cm diameter ball.
Designer outdoor wall lights: what sets a well-made model apart
The difference comes down to three things: a single material rather than a visible assembly, an even finish across the whole surface and controlled light. The contemporary versions in our outdoor design selection rely on a simple line, transparency or golden contrast. To compare more widely, browse all our home lighting solutions.
Which outdoor wall light does not rust?
All the wall lights in this collection are made of aluminium, a metal that does not rust: it forms a thin oxide layer on the surface that protects the rest of the piece. It is therefore the IP44, IP54 and IP65 ratings, along with the finish, that make the difference depending on how exposed the wall is.
IP44, IP54 or IP65: what does the rating really protect?
The IP rating says nothing about sturdiness: it describes resistance to dust and water. An IP44 withstands splashes, an IP54 adds dust, an IP65 withstands water jets. Remember this logic above all: the more exposed the wall, the higher the rating must be.
Highly exposed facade wall: which model to choose?
On an unsheltered entrance, go for IP65 outdoor wall lights. That is the case with the Baker Street wall light in IP65, 10 W LED in warm white, 26.5 cm high. For a wall battered by rain and wind, the watertight models for exposed walls remain the starting point.
| IP rating | What it protects against | Where to install it | Examples in the collection |
|---|---|---|---|
| IP44 | Water splashes | Sheltered wall, under an awning or roof overhang | Fleur black and Fleur bronze (E27, 60 W) |
| IP54 | Dust and water splashes | Covered terrace, protected facade, entrance | Bold (E27, 60 W), Bowery (GU10, 50 W), Faro (6 W LED), Amas (E27, 60 W) |
| IP65 | Dust and water jets | Exposed facade wall, unsheltered entrance | Baker Street (10 W LED), Downing Street (10 W LED), Candle (E27, 15 W) |
Outdoor wall light for a terrace: how to choose the right model?
For a terrace, a wall light that shines downwards or a twin-beam wall light illuminates the wall and the table without dazzling seated guests. IP54 and IP65 models are suitable on a terrace wall, with a GU10 or E27 socket or integrated LED depending on the bulb you want.
Outdoor wall lights: which type of light for a terrace?
A downward beam lights the table and leaves faces in shadow, which avoids glare. A twin beam, as on the Faro wall light, frames a door or marks a narrow wall. To dress a large wall, the terrace wall lights offer wider formats.
Tube, ball, flower: which shape lights what?
The shape decides the beam as much as the look. The compact tube the Bowery wall light in GU10 (Ø 6.4 cm, length 11.5 cm) throws an adjustable, precise light. The ball of the Bold model (Ø 20 cm, depth 16 cm) diffuses more widely. The flower, for its part, covers a large surface: the Fleur wall light in black and gold measures Ø 26 cm for 48 cm in length.
E27 outdoor bulb: which bulb should I choose for my wall light?
An E27 socket wall light takes a screw-in E27 bulb, to be chosen in a version intended for outdoor use. GU10 wall lights require a pin bulb, and LED models have the source built in: no bulb to plan for. The LED versions in the collection diffuse a warm white of 2700 to 3500 K.
Which socket to choose between E27 and GU10?
The E27 socket accepts a larger bulb and a more enveloping light; that is the choice of Bold, Fleur and Amas in 60 W, and Candle in 15 W. The GU10 serves a narrow, adjustable beam, as on Bowery in 50 W. The models with an E27 socket let you change the bulb whenever you like, which is not the case with integrated LED versions.
Warm white 2700-3500 K: what atmosphere outdoors?
A warm white between 2700 and 3500 K gives a light close to the filament bulb: wood, stone and brick take on a soft tint rather than a clinical white. That is the temperature of the models with integrated LED lighting in the collection, including the Velora in a brown finish (8 W, IP54).
| Socket | Stated wattage | Bulb to plan for | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|---|
| E27 | 60 W (Bold, Fleur, Amas), 15 W (Candle) | Screw-in E27 bulb, outdoor version | Wide light on a facade, an entrance, a terrace |
| GU10 | 50 W (Bowery black and grey) | GU10 pin bulb | Beam directed at a wall, a staircase or a table |
| Integrated LED | 6 W (Faro), 8 W (Velora), 10 W (Baker Street, Downing Street), 12 W (Rom) | None | Warm white 2700-3500 K, with no bulb to change |
High-end designer wall lights: style, colour and finish
A well-made model is judged by its material, its finish and its light: here an aluminium body, sometimes combined with glass, contemporary lines and, for the LED versions, a warm white. The colour of the facade decides the rest: black or anthracite on a light wall, white on a dark wall or dark cladding.
Tube, ball, globe or flower shapes
The collection mainly offers tube shapes, then balls and globes, a few flowers and a few open cages. The tube marks an entrance without taking over the wall, the ball dresses a terrace, the cage lets the bulb be seen and throws a direct light onto brick. Compare these profiles in the modern outdoor wall lights.
Facade colour: black, white, grey, anthracite or bronze
Black dominates by far, followed by white, clear, grey and a few bronze or brown pieces. Black disappears on a dark wall and highlights a light wall. For a light facade or white render, look at the black outdoor wall lights; for dark cladding, the white versions for light facades reverse the contrast.
1930s Art Deco, Art Nouveau or wood: useful outdoors?
Let us be clear: these styles belong mainly indoors, and wood needs regular care outside. The spirit of the past is found here through worked shapes, the open cage and bronze colours, among the vintage outdoor wall lights. For a brick wall, the industrial style outdoor wall lights play the same card.
Can an aluminium outdoor wall light be installed in a living room, bedroom or on a staircase?
A wall light intended for outdoors also works indoors: on a living room wall, in a bedroom or in a stairwell, its IP rating is not a problem. It then provides directed accent lighting. For purely indoor use, dedicated collections exist, designed for living spaces.
Living room and adult bedroom wall lights: where to place them
In a bedroom, two wall lights on either side of a headboard replace bedside lamps and free up the bedside table. In a living room, a wall light frames a bookcase or an armchair, as accent lighting. The LED wall lights for bedrooms and the LED wall lights for living rooms cover these uses.
Staircase wall lights: lighting a circulation area
On a staircase, a beam directed upwards or downwards lights the step or the handrail without dazzling. A compact GU10 model suits a passage wall, as does an LED wall light in warm white. See the modern wall lights for hallways for this type of circulation area.
How do you install and care for an aluminium outdoor wall light?
Installation means fixing the wall light to a sound wall, connecting the power supply and respecting the model's IP rating according to how exposed the wall is. Care is limited to a soft cloth: aluminium is cleaned with clear water, without abrasive products that would damage the finish.
Choosing the location according to how exposed the wall is
Under an awning or a roof overhang, an IP44 is enough. On a simply protected facade, an IP54 is the right benchmark. On a frankly exposed wall, aim for the top of the watertightness range. If automatic switching interests you, the outdoor wall lights with a motion sensor add presence-based triggering. For connection to the mains, call a professional.
Cleaning an aluminium outdoor wall light
A damp microfibre cloth is enough to remove dust and water marks. Avoid abrasive sponges and acidic products, which scratch the finish and dull the aluminium. Once or twice a year depending on exposure, and the fixture keeps its looks. Light shades such as the anthracite and grey finishes hide marks better than deep black.
Ordering an aluminium outdoor wall light: delivery, returns and payment
The choice comes down to four points: the socket (E27, GU10 or integrated LED), the colour in keeping with the facade, the IP rating suited to the wall and the shape that gives the type of light you want.
Payment is secure, delivery is tracked and returns are possible. The Designix customer service team answers questions about dimensions, socket and bulb compatibility before you order. For a highly exposed entrance, start with the IP65 outdoor wall lights.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the best outdoor wall light?
It depends on the wall: an aluminium outdoor wall light in IP54 suits a sheltered wall, while an IP65 model resists better on an exposed facade. Then choose the socket according to the bulb you want, E27 or GU10, or an LED version with no bulb to plan for.
Which outdoor wall light does not rust?
A wall light whose body is made of aluminium does not rust: the metal forms an oxide layer on the surface that protects the piece. In this collection, all the models are made of aluminium, some combined with glass or plastic, with IP44, IP54 and IP65 ratings.
E27 outdoor bulb: which bulb should I choose?
An E27 socket wall light takes a screw-in E27 bulb, to be chosen in a version intended for outdoor use. Check the wattage stated on the model, for example 60 W on Bold, Fleur or Amas, and 15 W on Candle.
Can wooden wall lights be installed outdoors?
Wood remains a material for indoors or sheltered spaces: exposed to rain, it needs regular care. For an outdoor wall, the aluminium in this collection is easier to live with, available in tube, ball, globe, flower or cage shapes depending on the model.
Which outdoor wall light should I choose for a staircase?
On a staircase or in a circulation area, a wall light whose beam is directed upwards or downwards lights without dazzling. A compact GU10 model such as Bowery, or an integrated LED wall light in warm white, suits a passage wall, outdoors as well as indoors.
