Plan for two levels of light: recessed ceiling downlights to light the room broadly, and an adjustable point above the mirror for the face. Near the shower and bathtub, choose IP65; IP44 is enough in the rest of the room. The rest comes down to diameter, light colour and the depth available above the ceiling.
Which type of lighting is best suited to a bathroom?
Recessed ceiling lighting, in neutral or warm white, suits a bathroom: it lights broadly without harsh shadows. Under the shower and near the bathtub, choose IP65 downlights; elsewhere, IP44 is enough. An adjustable downlight completes the setup above the mirror.
Recessed downlight or wall light: which solution lights the whole room?
A wall light lights an area, not a whole room: it suits above a mirror or along a wall. To cover everything, several recessed points spread the light and remove dark zones between the basin and the shower. Our lighting catalogue brings both approaches together, to combine according to the surface.
How should light be spread between ceiling and mirror?
Two ceiling points are enough in a small room, four to six in a large one. Above the vanity top, a directed beam avoids the shadow of the face in the mirror. In a house, the same family of downlights is often kept from one room to the next, such as recessed LED downlights for kitchens, for continuous light from living room to hallway.
Recessed downlight, LED ceiling light or powerful LED wall light: which to choose?
An LED ceiling light spreads general light in a single fitting; recessed downlights spread the same light over several points, with no protrusion on the ceiling. A powerful LED wall light takes its place above the mirror. In a damp room, all three solutions are chosen according to the ingress protection rating.
Powerful LED ceiling light or several recessed downlights?
The ceiling light suits when the ceiling is low or when you want to avoid drilling a series of holes. Recessed downlights have the advantage in a narrow room, where a single large fitting would leave dark corners. They also match LED downlights for the living room when the two rooms are adjacent.
Powerful LED wall light: which complement above the mirror?
A wide wall light above the mirror lights the face without casting a shadow, provided it stays away from the vanity top. An adjustable downlight does the same job with less bulk. These directional settings can be found in our selection of adjustable recessed downlights.
Which LED wattage for a bathroom?
Downlights of 6 to 12 W are generally enough to light a bathroom, knowing they are often fitted in several points and the wattages add up. Models of 18 W and 24 W serve large rooms or high ceilings. Light colour matters as much as watts.
How many downlights to light a bathroom?
Count generously: four to six points of 6 to 10 W cover an average room better than a single strong point. The total gives even light, without glare when you look up. Some models accept a dimmer, useful in the evening; see the dimmable models.
Do you need more watts under a high ceiling?
Yes, a significant height moves the source further away and dilutes the light on the floor. You then go up to 12 to 18 W per point, or multiply the points. A model like the Lysa, at 24 W and 17.5 cm in diameter, targets spacious volumes; its flush trim stays discreet on the ceiling.
Waterproof IP65 recessed LED bathroom downlight: where to place it in the room?
An IP65 downlight goes in areas directly exposed to splashes and steam: under the shower, above the bathtub, near the basin. An IP44 suits areas away from water. Many IP65 models are made of aluminium and also work outdoors.
| Zone | Rating | Light colour | Format | Models |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shower and around the bathtub | IP65 | Neutral or cool white | Round 6 cm or extra flat | Fiorano, Velkor, Ondor, SH-14 |
| Basin and mirror | IP65 or IP44 | Neutral white | Round 6 to 12 cm, adjustable | Kalynda, Ondor, Fiorano |
| Cabinet and niche | IP44 | Warm white | Small round 6 to 9.7 cm | Blanco, Velara, Fiorano |
| Ceiling of a large bathroom | IP44 | Neutral or warm white | Square 14.5 to 17 cm, round 17.5 cm | Quadratis, Albora, Lysa |
| Adjacent room away from water | IP44 | Warm white | Round 12 cm | Ivyra, Kalynda |
Waterproof IP65: which bathroom zones?
IP65 means resistance to water jets; IP44 is limited to splashes. Near a water point, steam and drops require the first. Further away, above a cabinet or in an adjoining hallway, the second is enough. A black finish creates contrast on a light ceiling.
Can an IP65 downlight be used outside?
Yes, an IP65 model in aluminium holds up under an overhang, on a covered terrace or near a glass door. Resistance to jets covers oblique rain, not immersion. These uses can be found in our range of recessed outdoor LED downlights.
Which diameter, shape and thickness for a recessed bathroom downlight?
Diameters range from about 4 cm for a discreet downlight to 17.5 cm for a large round model, with squares of 11 to 17 cm per side. An extra flat format, like the SH-14 and its 4.8 cm height, needs little depth above the ceiling.
| Format | Measurement | Typical use | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extra flat round | Ø 3.7 cm, height 4.8 cm | Shallow ceiling, targeted point | SH-14 |
| Small round | Ø 6 cm | Ceiling series, shower | Fiorano, Velkor, Velara, Ondor |
| Medium round | Ø 8.5 and 9.7 cm | Ceiling, cabinet | Talvina, Blanco |
| Large round | Ø 12 cm | Large room, adjustable | Kalynda, Ivyra |
| Very large round | Ø 17.5 cm | Large bathroom | Lysa |
| Square and double | 11 to 17 cm per side, plate 9 x 17 cm | Regular ceiling, alignment | Ondsamilo, Quadratis, Albora, Solvane |
Recessed LED bathroom downlight diameter 60: which format?
A 60 mm diameter corresponds to the small 6 cm rounds, the most often fitted in series on the ceiling. Their discreet recess suits low ceilings and rooms where the fitting should disappear. It is the most widespread format in the Designix lighting universe.
Extra flat or classic recessed: which ceiling depth?
An extra flat downlight makes do with little clearance above the ceiling, which helps in renovation under a slab. A classic recessed model needs more room. White versions blend into a painted ceiling, dark finishes highlight it.
Adjustable or fixed recessed downlight: how to choose?
An adjustable downlight directs the beam towards a wall, a mirror or a cabinet, which a fixed downlight cannot do. Fixed models give even ceiling lighting. In a bathroom, an adjustable above the vanity top is often combined with fixed ones elsewhere.
Waterproof IP65 adjustable recessed LED bathroom downlight: for which use?
The adjustable one is used to correct badly placed light without redoing the ceiling, or to highlight a niche. The Kalynda, in aluminium, IP44, Ø 12 cm and dimmable, is aimed at a vanity top or a wall. A choice to make at purchase; see the adjustable downlights.
Fixed downlight with ribbed lens: what light rendering?
The ribbed lens softens the beam and reduces glare when you look up, a real advantage near a mirror. The rendering stays even, with no sharp bright spot. Fiorano, Velkor, Velara and Ondor share this principle in Ø 6 cm. Also useful in a hallway crossed at night.
Which light colour to choose in a bathroom?
Warm white (2700 to 3500 K) relaxes and suits rooms for unwinding; neutral white (3500 to 4500 K) is the most versatile for a mirror; cool white (4500 to 6500 K) gives crisp light. The same light colour as the living room avoids breaks in atmosphere.
Warm white or neutral white in front of the mirror?
Neutral reproduces skin tones better and avoids the forced pink of warm white in front of a mirror. Warm remains pleasant in the evening, for a bath or ambient light. Talvina and Ondor are neutral, Fiorano, Velkor and Velara are warm.
Can light temperatures be mixed?
Better to stay with a single family per room and a neighbouring family in adjoining rooms. A targeted cool white, like the SH-14, works as accent lighting without breaking the whole. This keeps the same atmosphere as for bedroom lighting or the recessed downlights of the living room.
Recessed downlight for a bathroom cabinet: where to place the light?
In a cabinet or a niche, small round downlights are recessed to light the shelves and the basin, without glare. Above the mirror, an adjustable downlight lights the face; under the cabinet, a discreet model highlights the floor. The number of points follows the length of the top.
Recessed LED downlight for a bathroom cabinet: which size?
A small round of 6 to 9.7 cm fits under a shelf or in a cabinet side panel and lights the top without casting the shadow of a hand on it. The Solvane, a rectangular plate of 9 x 17 cm with two points, covers a wide basin with a single recess: see the Solvane double downlight.
How many points under a double basin cabinet?
Two to three points along the length are enough to light without a shadow gap between the two basins. They are aligned on the axis of the top, not at the back of the cabinet. This alignment principle comes from kitchen decor, where a clean worktop is also sought, close to modern kitchen decor and its LED downlights with crafted design.
Recessed bathroom downlight 12 V or 220 V, and how to install it?
The models in this collection are integrated LED or GU10 socket, powered from the mains: the transformer of an old 12 V setup does not need to be reused. Drilling follows the recess diameter of the downlight, and waterproofing comes from the seal of the IP65 model.
Waterproof IP65 220 V recessed LED bathroom downlight: what to check before drilling?
Three points: the cut-out diameter, the depth available above the ceiling and the cable route to the power point. The SH-14, with its 4.8 cm height, tolerates little clearance. Cut the power before any work and call an electrician near water.
How to clean and maintain a bathroom downlight?
A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough, without abrasive products that would dull the aluminium or ribbed glass. Avoid rotating an adjustable one repeatedly, the setting is made once. Most models are guaranteed five years, which covers normal use.
Frequently asked questions about recessed bathroom downlights
Which type of lighting is best suited to a bathroom?
Recessed works well: it lights without protrusion and is spread over several points. Choose IP65 downlights near the shower, IP44 elsewhere, in warm or neutral white. An adjustable downlight completes the mirror light.
Which LED wattage for a bathroom?
Downlights of 6 to 12 W are enough in most bathrooms, since they work in groups. 18 and 24 W concern large rooms or high ceilings. Light temperature and ingress protection rating matter as much as wattage.
Waterproof IP65 recessed LED bathroom downlight: what difference from an IP44?
IP65 means the downlight resists water jets, IP44 only splashes. An IP65 goes near the shower, bathtub or basin. An IP44 is enough in areas away from water points.
Which diameter to choose for a recessed LED bathroom downlight?
Models range from about 4 cm to 17.5 cm in diameter, with squares of 11 to 17 cm per side. A 6 cm one is discreetly recessed in series on the ceiling. A large format fills a spacious room.
Can an adjustable recessed downlight be installed in a bathroom?
Yes, it is aimed at the mirror, a wall or a cabinet, which a fixed one cannot do. It complements fixed ceiling downlights, like the Kalynda adjustable with gold reflector. The setting is chosen before fitting.
For a shallow ceiling or a targeted point, the SH-14 black round downlight in ribbed glass is fitted as IP65 with a height of only 4.8 cm. Measure your cut-out diameter and the available thickness before ordering: that is what decides the model.
