To light a staircase, plan for two to three light points: a wall light on the wall alongside the steps, a pendant with adjustable cable in the stairwell, and a light at the landing. This selection brings together indoor staircase lighting in metal, glass, resin, or wood, all IP20 and often LED.

Which light to choose for a staircase?
The choice depends on the space available and the volume to be lit. A straight staircase against a solid wall calls for a wall light, an open stairwell over two levels calls for a long-drop pendant, and a narrow staircase to an attic is fine with a compact ceiling light. All models in the selection are IP20, so intended for indoor use.
Wall staircase light
A wall light fixed on the wall alongside the climb marks the steps without reducing the passage. The Bird ball wall light, 34 cm by 17 cm, comes in black, white, or gold metal. Its neighbour Sena, in resin and acrylic, takes a G9 socket and is available in warm white or cool white. For a narrow space, the Aelo wall light measures only 12 cm by 15 cm and is available in gold with an adjustable GU10 spot.
Ceiling staircase light
A discreet ceiling light works well in a small service staircase or towards a basement, because it lights directly without taking up the passage. The brass and amber glass ceiling light Bollique, Ø 60 cm and five balls, also serves this role above a table placed near the climb.
| Configuration | Recommended solution | Why | To check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight staircase along a solid wall | Single or double wall light | Lights the climb without reducing the passage | Width and cable exit |
| Open stairwell over two levels | Long-drop pendant | One source lights the climb and the landing | Ceiling height and adjustable cable |
| Narrow staircase to attic or basement | Ceiling light or compact wall light | Direct lighting without bulk | Socket and bulb wattage |
| Staircase leading to a bedroom | Warm white wall light | Gentle circulation in the evening | Colour temperature and dimmer |
| Landing with a table | Height-adjustable pendant | Lights both areas at once | Diameter and drop height |
| Wood and metal staircase | Metal or wood wall light, E27 socket | Matches raw materials | Material and colour of the structure |
What are the best lighting ideas for a staircase?
Three ideas really work: wall lights that mark the climb, a multi-ball pendant hung in the stairwell to light both levels at once, and a light point at the landing. The goal remains the same, to eliminate dark areas at the top and bottom of the steps.
Pendant staircase light
Seen from the bottom of the staircase, a cascade of glass balls fills the void and becomes the landmark of the house. The Bollique Cascade pendant, Ø 60 cm and 350 cm cable, adjusts to the desired height. Its variant Bollique Constellation, in black glass with integrated LED, plays the same role in an open entrance.
Step staircase light
One wall light per flight, placed at the same height, guides the eye and secures each step. Ball-shaped wall lights remain the most legible from below, and long-drop pendants take over when the stairwell is high. On a wood and metal staircase, keep the same finish from top to bottom.
How to light a dark staircase or a stairwell with no natural light?
A staircase with no daylight is handled with several sources rather than one very powerful one: a pendant in the stairwell to light the volume, wall lights to mark the climb, and a warm white light between 2700 and 3500 K. A dark stairwell also warms up with a light wall and grazing light.
LED staircase light
Integrated LED simplifies high stairwells, since there is no bulb to replace. The Delo wall light, 61.5 cm of gold glass discs, lights an entire wall, and the EPLI B pendant, 27 cm wide, suits a narrow landing. To go further on the technology, see LED lighting.
Choosing the colour temperature
Warm white dominates on staircase models, and neutral or cool white remains rare, on the Edy chandelier in particular. In general, 2700 to 3000 K suits evening circulation, while a more neutral white helps to read the steps clearly. A light in glass diffuses this light without darkening it.
How to match the staircase light with the living room and hallway?
When the staircase is open to the living area, keep the same family of materials and colours: black or gold metal, glass, ball or tube shapes. A simple echo between the wall light on the climb and the pendant in the living area is enough to make the whole coherent, without matching everything room by room.
Design staircase light
A contemporary white staircase supports a white or gold wall light that fades in front of the architecture. A wood and metal staircase prefers a wood or metal wall light with an E27 socket, like the Mori wall light. Design pieces and metal structures set the tone from the first step.
Original living room light
When the staircase leads to the dining room, the line of the light is seen from the table and deserves a common choice. A copper wall light on the climb and a strong piece on the living room ceiling, like the Edy chandelier in gold crystal, are enough to create this link. This is also the case for a dining room light chosen together with the living room lights.
At what height should a light be installed in a staircase?
The pendant is installed in the axis of the stairwell void, with an adjustable cable up to 350 cm depending on the models, keeping sufficient clearance above the steps. Wall lights are placed on the wall alongside the climb, aligned with each other when there are several.
Height of a long-drop pendant
The adjustable cable allows the drop to be adjusted once the light is in place: 350 cm possible on the Bollique Cascade and the Bollique pendant, 180 cm on the EPLI B. Adjust the height from the bottom of the staircase, checking that no ball enters the head passage area. A Ø 60 cm fits in a wide stairwell.
Wall light: what height on the climb?
A wall light is usually fixed at raised-hand height, above the step nosing, to remain accessible and not hit the shoulder. The formats in the selection range from 12 cm by 15 cm (Aelo) to 61.5 cm (Delo), which changes the space needed. Also check access for changing the bulb.
How to install, change a bulb, and maintain a staircase light?
Models with integrated LED avoid working at height since there is no bulb to replace. On models with E27, E14, G9, or GU10 sockets, use a stable stepladder and cut the power before changing the bulb. Glass and metal are cleaned with a soft cloth.
