Start by counting the wall's exposure: in full rain, you need IP65; under an awning, IP54 is enough. Then choose the light, warm white for a terrace and cool white for a passage, then the source, integrated LED or E27 socket. This selection brings together outdoor wall lights in aluminium, metal, glass and acrylic, mostly black, to install on a facade, an entrance or a terrace.
What is the best outdoor wall light?
The best outdoor wall light is the one whose IP rating matches the wall's exposure, whose light illuminates the passage without dazzling and whose material holds up outdoors: here aluminium, metal, glass or acrylic, in IP65, with integrated LED or E27 socket.
IP65 outdoor wall lights: what the rating guarantees
On a facade wall, water decides, and not only at the diffuser: the seal and the cable entry count just as much. Almost all of our selection is rated IP65, a small part IP54. This is the first filter to apply before looking at the shape of the housing, and it immediately eliminates disguised indoor fixtures.
Entrance, terrace or facade: the deciding criterion
An entrance wall wants a wide, low light, a terrace an ambient light, a facade a beam that draws out the material. Aluminium dominates by far, often in matte black to blend into a dark wall, or in white on a light render. The format does the rest: a round Halo light of 17 x 10 cm can be installed in a row along a wall, a wider module like Terralux occupies a facade panel on its own.
What is the ideal IP rating for outdoor lighting?
For outdoor lighting exposed to rain and splashes, IP65 is the reference rating: it protects against dust and water jets. This selection is offered in IP65, with a few models in IP54 reserved for sheltered walls, under an awning for example.
IP65: dust and water jets
The first digit covers dust, the second water; the 5 corresponds to jets, not immersion. In practice, an IP65 light holds up on a wall lashed by rain and can be cleaned with a gentle garden hose. This is the level to aim for on anything that stays outside all year, without exceeding what the wall needs.
IP54: models designed for a sheltered wall
Under a porch, a canopy or a roof overhang, IP54 is enough: it protects against dust and splashes, without withstanding a direct jet. These models are useful when the mounting stays covered and the priority is the design. Our hub of waterproof outdoor wall lights groups these two levels, classified by exposure.
How to choose between warm white, cool white and neutral white?
Warm white, between 2700 and 3500 K, gives a welcoming light for a terrace or an entrance. Cool white, from 4500 to 6500 K, lights a facade or a passage to be secured more sharply. Neutral white, rarer, serves as an intermediate between the two ambiances.
Warm white 2700 - 3500 K: the ambiance of a terrace
This is the shade that prolongs a meal outside without turning into a stairwell. Matte black aluminium models, like Baker Street or Downing Street, offer it in 10 W and draw a soft halo on the masonry. The majority of our selection exists in this temperature.
Cool white 4500 - 6500 K: reading a facade at night
Whiter, sharper: it brings out the details of a wall, lights an alley or a corner to watch. Halo and Terralux in 18 W exist in warm white as well as cool white, which lets you decide at installation time according to the wall colour and the actual use of the area. For an entrance, a set of 2 lets you install two lights on either side.
| Ambiance | Temperature | What it lights | Models in the collection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warm white | 2700 - 3500 K | Terrace, entrance, surroundings | Baker Street, Downing Street, Stock, Sleek |
| Cool white | 4500 - 6500 K | Passage, alley, facade | Halo, Terralux, Sentinel, LuminMotion |
| Neutral white | 3500 - 4500 K | Intermediate rendering | On a minority of models |
| Depending on the bulb | E27, G4 or GU10 base | The colour depends on the bulb | Hylo, Eior, Cell, Candle, Scope |
Led, E27, G4 or GU10: what type of light for an outdoor wall light?
Integrated LED equips most models: the source cannot be replaced but the diffusion is even. E27, G4 and GU10 sockets let you choose the bulb, its power and its temperature. A handful of models run on solar energy, with no mains connection.
E27 outdoor bulb: lights where you replace it yourself
An E27 socket means the right to change the bulb in five years without changing the fixture. Cell and Candle offer it in 15 W, in an aluminium and transparent plastic housing. You also gain the choice of temperature, from the very warm of a terrace to the sharp of a passage.
Integrated LED, G4 and GU10: what it changes
Integrated LED gives a continuous light, with no visible hot spot, and covers the 18 W as well as the small 7 W. G4 equips compact formats, like Eior in 9 W. GU10, finally, accepts a reflector bulb to concentrate the light, as on Scope. See the E27 socket models and the LED outdoor wall lights to help you decide.
| Base / technology | Bulb | What it changes | Models concerned |
|---|---|---|---|
| Integrated LED | Not replaceable | Even diffusion, source included | Halo, Terralux, Sentinel, LuminMotion, Baker Street |
| E27 | Screw-in bulb | You choose the bulb and the intensity | Cell, Candle, Hylo |
| G4 | Small bulb | For compact formats | Eior |
| GU10 | Reflector bulb | Direct or concentrate the light | Scope |
| Solar | Depending on the model | No mains connection | A few models in the selection |
Where to install an outdoor wall light in the house?
An outdoor wall light is installed on either side of an entrance, along a terrace, on a facade wall or in an outdoor staircase. The right reflex: place the source outside the field of vision, light the passage floor, and choose a black or white model according to the wall.
Outdoor wall light terrace: without dazzling
On a terrace, the light should go down and graze the wall rather than go towards the eyes. A slim housing like Sleek, in stainless steel with 28.4 cm depth, lights without occupying the gaze. To go further, our terrace lighting groups the models designed for this use.
Staircase, entrance and outdoor corridor wall lights
In a garden staircase or a service corridor, each step should be readable without a harsh halo. Two low sources are better than a single spotlight above the heads. The corridor lights with a sober design and the models designed for the terrace cover these passages.
How to match the style: contemporary, industrial, vintage or art deco?
This selection is contemporary and modern in spirit, with tube, square, round, oval or cage shapes. For an art deco, art nouveau or industrial spirit, look rather at vintage or metal cage models, then match the housing colour to the wall: black, white, grey or gold.
Tube, square, round or cage shapes
The shape governs the drawing of the light: a tube lengthens the halo, a square frames it, a cage fragments it into a star. Square and tube modules dominate our outdoor selection. A gold housing warms a light render, a white housing almost disappears, a black housing reads like a line.
Art deco, art nouveau, industrial: where to look
Our outdoor selection is not art deco: for these ambiances, rely on the industrial spirit and the vintage finishes, where metal and glass work the material. Hylo, in metal, glass and bronze or black iron at 43 cm high, comes close. The full range of our fixtures lets you complete the match.
How to install and maintain an IP65 outdoor wall light?
An IP65 outdoor wall light is installed on a flat wall, with the cable entry protected by the seal or the cable gland provided. For maintenance, a soft cloth and soapy water are enough on aluminium, glass and acrylic; abrasive products damage the finish and the waterproof seal.
Mounting and sealing of the cable entry
Follow the manufacturer's instructions: they determine the warranty, of two years or five years depending on the models. The sensitive point remains the cable entry; a poorly tightened cable gland cancels the IP65 even on a waterproof housing. Tighten without forcing, check that the seal is not pinched, and point the cable gland downwards.
Cleaning aluminium, glass and acrylic
A soft cloth, warm water and a neutral soap are enough. On matte black aluminium, avoid abrasive sponges that leave shiny marks. Glass and acrylic are cleaned the same way, without alcohol or solvent. Checking the seal once a year prolongs the fixture's durability.
Motion sensor, dimmer or simple switch: what to choose?
The motion sensor is made for an entrance or a passage: the light comes on on your return, without looking for the switch. Dimming only concerns a few models in the selection. Everywhere else, the simple switch remains the most direct and most readable solution.
Models with sensor for the entrance and passage
A sensor avoids leaving a light on all night on a little-used path. Sentinel combines sensor, integrated LED and 18 W in IP65, with the same base as Terralux. Our passage lighting groups these references, including the LED with motion detection selection.
Dimming: the compatible models
Dimming means lowering the intensity late in the evening rather than cutting it off sharply. Few outdoor models allow it; Eior, with a G4 base and 9 W, is one of them. Adjusting the light intensity depends mainly on the bulb and the wall dimmer, to be checked before purchase.
Living room, adult bedroom, wet room wall lights: stay in IP65?
An IP65 outdoor light has its place in a bathroom or a wet room, because it withstands splashes. In a dry living room, an adult bedroom or a corridor, an indoor light is enough and offers more materials, including wood: that is where to look for these rooms.
Bathroom and wet room: IP65 has its place
Near a basin or a shower, IP65 protects against splashes just like outdoors. The aluminium housing and acrylic diffuser clean with a wipe of a sponge, which matters in a wet room. Our IP65 in wet rooms gathers these models, from compact to wider formats.
Living room, adult bedroom and corridor: switch to indoor collections
In a dry room, IP65 brings nothing and the outdoor selection lacks warm materials. For these uses, it is better to look at the wall light for the living room, the bedroom light or the worktop light, where wood and soft finishes are available.
For a terrace, Terralux or Halo in 18 W, in warm white, set a welcoming light. For an entrance, Sentinel adds the sensor. For a dark wall, a housing from the matte black housings disappears into the masonry, while a white version for light walls fades on a render. Compare the volumes before choosing. Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service accompany every order.
What is the ideal IP rating for outdoor lighting?
IP65 is the reference rating for an exposed wall: it protects against dust and water jets. This selection is offered in IP65, with a few models in IP54 designed for a sheltered location, under an awning for example.
Which outdoor wall light to choose for a terrace?
An IP65 model in aluminium, glass or acrylic, in warm white for the ambiance or in cool white to light more sharply, positioned to light the passage without sending the source into the eyes. Integrated LED models as well as E27 socket versions are suitable.
Can you put an E27 bulb in an outdoor wall light?
Yes, several models in the selection are equipped with an E27 socket, in 15 W notably. You then choose the bulb yourself, its power and its colour temperature. Integrated LED, on the other hand, cannot be replaced: the source is part of the fixture.
Is an IP65 outdoor wall light suitable for a bathroom?
Yes: IP65 protects against dust and water jets, which covers the splashes of a wet room. The same light can therefore be used outdoors, on a terrace, and indoors, in a bathroom, provided the installation rules for wet areas are respected.
How to choose a staircase wall light?
Look for a light that illuminates the step without dazzling: a compact IP65 model, in aluminium, with warm white integrated LED, placed outside the field of vision. For a dry indoor staircase, an indoor light remains more suitable.
