First place the solar garden light where the panel receives sunlight without shadows, then choose the IP rating according to exposure and the colour temperature according to use. An outdoor solar garden light does not connect to the mains: it is placed, screwed or hung, and turns on by itself at nightfall. The protection rating and the orientation of the sensor matter more than the advertised wattage.
How does an outdoor solar garden light work?
A photovoltaic panel captures daylight, a battery stores it, then a dusk sensor turns the light on as soon as night falls. No switch, no cable: the cycle repeats as long as the sensor stays clear. Almost all the models in this selection run on solar power and several combine solar and LED, which reduces battery consumption.
Solar, LED or both: how does it light up at night?
Solar refers to the power supply, LED refers to the light source. A solar LED model turns on by itself and consumes little; a solar model with an E27 socket accepts a bulb that can be replaced, which lets you choose the colour temperature. Both formats coexist in our wired or solar outdoor lights.
Where should the panel be placed to capture enough light?
Point the panel south, with no obstruction: a wall, a branch or a hedge in front of it reduces the charge. A spot that is sunny in the middle of the day recharges better than a corner that is shaded all day. On the source side, a sober bulb like the one in our outdoor LED lighting needs less energy for an equivalent result.
Which IP rating should you choose for a solar garden light?
The IP rating codes resistance to dust and water. An IP65 stays outside in the rain, an IP54 withstands splashes on a covered terrace, an IP44 suits a sheltered porch, an IP20 is reserved for dry rooms.
| IP rating | Where to install it | What it withstands | Examples in the collection |
|---|---|---|---|
| IP65 | Terrace, balcony, path, garden | Rain and dust, permanent exposure | Nico, Alzara, Rostorena, Martorora, Hortus, Livtorica, Nertorica planters; Sortoristo cube; Rafresca furniture |
| IP54 | Sheltered wall, under an awning | Water splashes | Xandor wall light |
| IP44 | Porch, ventilated shelter, path edge | Small water splashes | Narcisa bollard, Elicia torch |
| IP20 | Living room, hallway, kitchen, bedroom | Dust only, no contact with water | Ilyara, Verona, Velnorissa ceiling lights; Nella spotlight |
IP65 or IP44: when should you choose less waterproof?
An IP44 is enough when the light is under an awning, in a porch or along a path that is not heavily watered. Water only reaches it as splashes, never as continuous run-off. As soon as the light point stays exposed to driving rain, switch to IP65. For a facade wall, also compare the wall lights for facades, often in aluminium and glass.
Can an IP20 light stay outside?
No, not in the open: an IP20 only protects against dust, a shower is enough to damage it. It is intended for dry rooms, living room, hallway or kitchen. If you are looking for a piece for both indoors and outdoors, our world of outdoor lighting gathers the models compatible with each area.
Which outdoor solar garden light lights well?
What changes perception is the colour temperature and the position of the sensor, not the advertised wattage. A warm white of 2700 to 3500 K lights a terrace without harshness, a neutral white of 3500 to 4500 K stays readable near an entrance, a cool white above 4500 K outlines a path. The collection covers all three moods.
Warm white or cool white: which light for a terrace?
Warm white, the most represented here, suits a relaxation corner or a facade: it lights without flattening materials. Neutral white, a third of the models, is used for passages and stairs where you want to read effortlessly. Cool white marks borders and walkways. A model with an E27 socket lets you swap the bulb anyway.
Why does wattage not tell the whole story?
Two lights of the same wattage do not give the same light depending on the source and the diffusion. A globe, a tube or a cage distribute the flux differently, and a badly oriented sensor matters more than a few extra watts. Look at the colour temperature, the material and the format before the wattage.
Bollard, light planter, cube or wall light: which format to choose?
IP65 light planters with an E27 socket, such as the Alzara light planter or Nico, light and plant in the same spot on a terrace. For a path or a wall, a bollard like the Narcisa bollard or a wall light like the Xandor solar wall light structures the space better than a simple light point.
| Format | Use | Signature | Models |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light planter | Terrace, balcony, entrance | Lights and plants in the same spot, E27 or LED socket, IP65 | Nico (35 x 70 cm), Alzara, Rostorena (59 or 79 cm high), Hortus, Livtorica, Martorora |
| Bollard or torch | Path, terrace edge | Tall and slim format, IP44 | Narcisa (9 x 39 cm), Elicia (8.2 x 120 cm) |
| Wall light | Facade, terrace wall | Aluminium and glass, IP54 | Xandor (W 10.5 x D 23 cm) |
| Cube and light ball | Terrace, living room | Light base with E27 socket, IP65 | Sortoristo |
| Light furniture | Terrace, garden | Cooling function and lighting, IP65 | Rafresca (35 x 70 cm) |
Outdoor solar garden light to place on the ground or hang?
A heavy and wide model like Nertorica or Rostorena, 79 cm high, is placed on the ground and no longer moves. A light model is hung or moved according to the time. The floor lamps cover both uses depending on weight.
Light planter: lighting and planting in the same spot
The planter combines two functions: a planting tray and a light source in the same volume. Martorora comes in 30 x 30 x 58 cm, 40 x 40 x 90 cm and 50 x 50 x 110 cm, Hortus in 49 cm and 40 cm square. For a graphic piece, also look at the design pieces for the garden.
First choose the format according to the surface to cover, then the bulb: this pairing decides the result. Find the models mentioned in our selection of outdoor lighting.
Outdoor solar light with motion sensor or remote control: what uses?
The sensor turns the light on when someone passes and preserves the battery the rest of the time: it targets an entrance, a staircase or a pathway. The remote control forces the light on or adjusts the intensity without bending down. These functions remain in the minority: so check the product sheet.
Motion sensor: for which passage should you activate it?
On a short passage area, yes: the sensor avoids lighting an empty zone for hours. On a terrace where you sit, permanent lighting or the remote control is more comfortable. A service entrance benefits from combining both, with a sober LED model from our set of solar and auxiliary lamps.
Remote control and dimmer: adjust the intensity without bending down
The remote control communicates with the lamp module, without wiring, and suits a planter or a cube placed far from the door. The dimmer, however, remains rare: on a piece with a modern style, prefer a dimmable bulb if the socket allows it.
How to install and hang an outdoor solar garden light without an electrician?
A solar light does not connect to the mains: it is placed on the ground, screwed to a wall or hung, then pointed south. No cable, no electrical supply, no electrician. Xandor is fixed to the wall, Narcisa and Elicia are planted at the edge of a path, Sortoristo is moved around.
At what height should you install a wall light or a hanging light?
For a facade wall light, generally allow around 1.80 m to 2.20 m from the ground, below the awning level. A pendant above a table is rather between 70 and 80 cm from the tabletop. Wall models in aluminium and glass like Xandor match these heights.
How to connect several lights to a single electrical supply?
With solar lights, the question does not arise: each model is self-contained and runs on its battery. You can therefore line up several bollards along a path without running a line. For a consistent look, stay within the same family of white lights for terraces or black and graphic finishes.
Can you use a solar garden light in the living room or under the entrance?
Yes, some models target covered rooms such as the living room, the entrance or the kitchen, like the Sortoristo light cube or the Velnorissa solar ceiling light. They remain IP20 or IP54, so sheltered from rain, and are satisfied with decent light exposure to recharge their battery.
Does a solar light for the entrance or living room work?
Provided the panel sees daylight: a well-exposed window, a conservatory or a glazed entrance is enough. Solar power then avoids running a line in a hall without a socket. To light these volumes more widely, compare with the living room and conservatory lamps.
Which materials and colours to choose according to the room?
Plastic dominates on outdoor models, for its lightness and water resistance; aluminium and steel return on wall lights and ceiling lights. White remains the majority, followed by black. For a light facade or a dark wall, pick from our world of lighting with a contemporary style.
Maintenance, wintering and warranty of an outdoor solar garden light
The panel is cleaned with clear water and a soft cloth, without abrasive product: a film of dust is enough to reduce the charge. In winter, light models are sheltered, IP65 bollards and planters are left in place, and the warranty is checked.
How to clean the solar panel without damaging it?
A soft damp cloth, never a scraper or alcohol. Wipe the panel and the casing, then check that nothing masks the sensor. The heavy plastic models of the most affordable models require the same gesture as pieces in metal and aluminium versions, only the frequency changes.
What to do in winter when the sun is scarce?
Bring light lamps inside and store them away from frost, battery discharged if possible. Bollards and planters stay outside, but autonomy drops under an overcast sky. If a model ages poorly, the warranty takes over according to its duration.
Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service accompany every order. Set the format, the IP rating and the colour, then confirm: your outdoor solar garden light is only waiting for a sunny spot.
Frequently asked questions about the outdoor solar garden light
What is the best solar light for outdoors?
There is no single model. For a path, an IP44 bollard like Narcisa or Elicia is enough; for a terrace, an IP65 light planter with an E27 socket like Nico or Alzara lights more widely; for a wall, the aluminium Xandor wall light frames the space. The best is the one whose IP rating, format and colour temperature match the location.
What is the downside of solar lights?
The charge depends on the sun: in winter or under a very overcast sky, autonomy drops and lighting lasts less time. The panel must stay clean and clear, otherwise it recharges poorly. The intensity also remains moderate: a solar light lights a passage or a corner of a terrace, not an entire plot.
Is an outdoor solar garden light with a motion sensor really useful?
On a passage, a staircase or in front of a door, yes: the light stays on standby and turns on at the right moment, which preserves the battery for the hours without traffic. On a terrace where you sit, permanent lighting or a remote control is often more comfortable than a sensor.
How to hang an outdoor solar garden light without an electrical socket?
All you need is a support: a hook, a screw or a wall. The Xandor wall light is fixed to the wall, bollards and planters are placed on the ground, and light models are hung from a branch or a pergola. The panel must stay facing the sky to recharge.
How to recognise a real salt lamp?
A salt lamp is carved from a block of rock salt, often orange-pink, with irregular veins and crystals: no two are identical. It is heavy, slightly damp to the touch in humid weather, and diffuses a warm amber light. A smooth, light and perfectly uniform block is generally reconstituted salt.
