A dimmable LED downlight is controlled from a switch or a wall dimmer: you adjust the intensity of the same source according to the time of day and the use. This selection brings together models for the living room and the kitchen, with integrated LED, mostly in aluminium, in glass for a few pieces, all in IP20.

What is a dimmable LED downlight and what does dimming change?

The adjustment is made at the wall, on a dimmer-compatible switch: the light dims gradually down to off, with no abrupt step at the low end. In this selection, the LED is integrated and dimming is supported on all models, with an IP20 rating for dry rooms.

A dimmable LED downlight, how does it work day to day?

In the evening, you lower it to get accent light; during the day, you raise it to read or work. The control remains an ordinary switch or wall dimmer, with no remote control or app. A 25 W model pushed to full covers a large room, the same one dimmed serves as a night light in a hallway.

How to recognise a compatible dimmable LED light fixture?

The criterion lies in the source: an LED stated as dimmable, or an integrated LED already designed for dimming. Here, each model carries an integrated LED with LED base, with no bulb to choose or replace. For other mounting formats, look at the recessed dimmable LED downlights, then the full range of dimmable downlights.

Which dimmable LED downlight to choose for the living room?

For a living room, an 18 to 25 W dimmable LED downlight lights a living area widely and dims in the evening, while a 5 W model serves as discreet light. Round shapes from Ø 10 to 15 cm and flat wall lights suit a ceiling as well as a wall.

Living room LED ceiling light or a line of downlights, which ceiling light?

An LED ceiling light spreads light across the whole room, while a line of downlights draws points and leaves darker areas. In a living room, the second choice pairs well with a dimmer, since you dose the mood without switching off. See the living room lighting and the models in modern style.

Which wattage for a living space?

Allow 18 to 25 W for overall lighting and 5 W for a single light point. The Larc black tube downlight 25 W in aluminium, Ø 3.6 cm and 60 cm deep, structures a large room. A smaller model such as the Relax black downlight of Ø 15 cm plays the accent above an armchair.

Which dimmable LED downlight for the kitchen?

In the kitchen, dimming is mainly used above the worktop: full intensity for preparing, low light for meals. The dimmable downlights in the collection range from 5 W for a discreet accent to 25 W to light the room, with an integrated LED and an aluminium material that is easy to wipe.

Which light above the worktop?

A spotlight aimed in neutral white, around 3500 to 4500 K, gives a crisp light for cooking. The Focus LED black downlight of 20 W and Ø 6.5 cm matches this use, with an integrated LED that leaves no bulb to change. The rest of the room is covered with wider kitchen downlights.

Aim or fix your kitchen downlight?

A fixed ceiling downlight lights the room with no adjustment, an adjustable model directs the beam onto a precise surface. Compare the adjustable downlights with the flat wall lights 2.2 cm thick, which are mounted on the wall above the worktop when the ceiling is already taken.

LED ceiling light, LED chandelier or LED wall light: which fixture with a dimmer?

A dimmable LED downlight is installed on the ceiling or as a wall light to light a whole room or a precise point, an LED ceiling light structures the overall light, an LED chandelier brings a central volume and an LED wall light adds an accent. The choice depends on the surface, the height and the use.

Powerful LED ceiling light or distributed LED ceiling lighting?

A ceiling light concentrates light at one strong point, a series of downlights distributes it and leaves more freedom of layout. In a room with a low ceiling, the wall light avoids visual discomfort and remains adjustable. For a more elaborate design, look at the downlights with an elaborate design.

Living room LED wall light, the accent light that dims?

The wall light is mounted high, lights without taking up the ceiling and dims to accompany reading or conversation. The bedroom lighting follows the same logic, with low intensity late in the evening. Metal finishes remain easy to match with a sober interior, as shown by the selection of metal downlights.

Which wattage and shape of dimmable LED downlight to choose?

Wattage is chosen according to the surface and the role of the downlight: 5 W for discreet lighting, 12 to 18 W for everyday use, 20 to 25 W to light wider. Shape matters too: the Ø 3.6 cm tube draws a fine line, the Ø 10 to 15 cm round stands out more.

5 W, 12 W, 18 W, 25 W, reading the real wattage

The stated wattage gives an order of magnitude, not a measurement of perceived light. A 5 W as an accent, a 12 W in a hallway or entrance, an 18 W in a living space, a 25 W to cover wide. The Parete black downlight of 12 W and the Rado black downlight of 18 W illustrate these two levels.

Tube, round or globe, what the shape changes in the result

The tube projects a long, discreet line, suited to deep rooms. The round concentrates light on one area and is noticed on the ceiling. The glass globe diffuses more softly, like the Luna glass globe 5 W of Ø 13 cm, which suits a relaxation corner rather than a worktop.

Stated wattage, shapes and room of use
Wattage Available shapes Where to use it Models concerned
5 W Glass globe Ø 13 cm, round Ø 15 cm Discreet lighting, reading corner, accent Luna white downlight, Relax black downlight
12 W Flat wall light 2.2 cm thick Accent wall light, entrance, hallway Parete black downlight
18 W Round Ø 10.2 cm, flat wall light Living space, kitchen Rado black downlight, Parete white downlight
20 W Spotlight Ø 6.5 cm, neutral white 3500 to 4500 K Directional lighting, worktop Focus LED black downlight
24 W Duo shape Ø 5.2 cm Double light point, living room or kitchen Elti Duo black downlight
25 W Tube Ø 3.6 cm, depth 60 cm Large room, line of ceiling downlights Larc white downlight, Larc black downlight

Do LED bulbs work with a dimmer?

Yes, provided the source is stated as dimmable and the dimmer is compatible with it: an LED designed for dimming is controlled normally, while a non-dimmable LED on a dimmer may flicker or switch off in steps. The downlights in this selection carry an LED already designed for dimming.

Dimmable LED bulbs, what makes dimming possible

Dimming depends on two elements: the driver of the source and the type of dimmer upstream. A dimmer designed for halogen is not always suited to an LED, even a dimmable one. On a downlight with integrated LED, this question disappears, since the source and its electronics are matched at the factory.

My old halogen floor lamp with dimmer, compatibility with LED

An old dimmer can cause flickering or step starting on an LED. When replacing the source, it is better to check the compatibility stated by the dimmer manufacturer, or switch to a fixture with integrated LED. The Elti Duo black downlight of 24 W, in Ø 5.2 cm, falls into this second category.

How to install, maintain and check a dimmable LED downlight?

The downlights in the selection are IP20: they are installed indoors, in dry rooms such as the living room or the kitchen, never in an area exposed to water. Dry dusting is enough, with no product or damp sponge on the integrated LED, the aluminium or the glass.

Before drilling, IP20 and dry rooms

The IP20 rating protects against contact with fingers and solid objects, not against water splashes. A bathroom or a covered terrace requires higher protection, absent from this selection. For a hallway or staircase lighting, wall mounting remains possible as long as the area is dry.

Maintaining the aluminium, the glass and the integrated LED

A soft, dry cloth on the aluminium body is enough to remove dust. The glass of the Luna globe is cleaned in the same way, without immersion. The integrated LED is not removable: no bulb change is to be expected, which limits maintenance to the housing.

Black or white, aluminium or glass: which dimmable downlight for which interior?

Black aluminium blends into a painted ceiling or a dark false ceiling and shows dust less visually, while white disappears on a light ceiling. Glass, rarer in the collection, softens the light of a model like the Luna globe; aluminium dominates for its slenderness.

Black LED downlights, discreet presence on the ceiling

Black suits dark ceilings, false ceilings and contemporary interiors. A Ø 3.6 cm tube remains almost invisible once installed, which leaves only the light visible. Find these finishes in the matte black finishes.

White LED downlights, blending into a light ceiling

On a ceiling painted white, a light housing is hardly noticed and leaves the design of the room intact. The Parete white downlight of 18 W and 32.6 cm deep follows this wall logic. To change shade, compare the white models with their dark equivalents.

Material, colour and real dimensions
Model Material Colour Stated dimensions
Larc downlight Aluminium Black or white Ø 3.6 cm, depth 60 cm
Luna downlight Glass White Ø 13 cm, length 19.3 cm
Rado downlight Aluminium Black Ø 10.2 cm, length 10.2 cm, depth 19.3 cm
Focus LED downlight Aluminium Black Ø 6.5 cm, length 6.5 cm, depth 19.3 cm
Relax downlight Aluminium Black Ø 15 cm, length 15 cm, depth 19.3 cm
Parete downlight Aluminium White or black Thickness 2.2 cm, depth 32.6 cm or 21.9 cm

The choice therefore comes down to three points: the wattage according to the surface, the colour according to the ceiling and the shape according to the desired effect. Compare the pieces with a careful design with the most sober models, then place your order: the catalogue shows the price of the day for each reference.

Frequently asked questions about dimmable LED downlights

Do LED bulbs work with a dimmer?

An LED bulb works on a dimmer if it is stated as dimmable and if the dimmer is compatible with it. A non-dimmable LED connected to a dimmer may flicker or switch off in steps. In this selection, the downlights include an LED already designed for dimming: no bulb to choose separately.

Is it possible to put a non-dimmable LED bulb on a dimmer?

Technically it lights up, but the dimming is rarely clean: flickering, step switching off or noise may appear, and the source may wear out faster. A dimming-compatible bulb or a downlight with integrated LED designed for a dimmer, like those in this collection, is better.

Which living room LED ceiling light to choose with a dimmer?

The living room is covered with a dimmable downlight of 18 to 25 W for overall lighting, completed by a 5 W model for a softer point. The round shape from Ø 10 to 15 cm and the flat wall light 2.2 cm thick suit the ceiling as well as the wall.

Do you need a special dimmer for an LED downlight?

The dimmer simply needs to be compatible with the LED source, and not reserved for halogen bulbs. As the downlights in this selection carry an integrated LED designed for dimming, you control the intensity without choosing a separate bulb. The dimmer model remains to be validated with your electrical installation.

Can a dimmable LED downlight be installed in a bathroom?

Not for this selection: all the downlights are stated as IP20, a rating intended for indoors and dry rooms such as the living room or the kitchen. In a damp room, higher protection is required. Here, the downlight is therefore installed in an area not exposed to water splashes.

All that is left is to choose between a line of ceiling downlights and a more discreet wall mounting. Browse the Designix lighting universe to place these models within the whole catalogue, or linger on the modern kitchen solutions if your project revolves around the worktop.

One last reference point before confirming: measure the available depth (60 cm for the Larc tube, 19.3 cm for most round models) and check the thickness of your ceiling. Tracked delivery, secure payment, returns according to the conditions in force and Designix customer service for any compatibility question. The five-year warranty covers every model, and the full lighting catalogue helps you compare the families with each other.
