Allow for an IP44 rating minimum under a canopy and IP65 on a facade exposed to rain: this is the first criterion for a garden light. Then come the material (aluminium, metal, glass), the socket (integrated LED, E27, GU10, G9 or G4) and the colour temperature, from warm white to cool white.
Which garden light should you choose for a terrace, an entrance or an outdoor area?
For a terrace or an entrance, choose a garden light suited to the exposure: a wall light, a lantern or a pendant. Go for an IP44 rating minimum, and IP65 for an exposed facade. Materials such as aluminium, metal or glass withstand the weather and match contemporary or modern styles.
An outdoor garden light designed for the facade
On a facade wall, a wall light illuminates the passage without cluttering the ground and is fitted at shoulder height. The LuminEclat square LED wall light combines metal, glass and acrylic, in IP65 and in 18 or 30 W. On a long wall, the Lumenza LED tube wall light comes in sizes from 40 to 240 cm, in IP67 and dimmer compatible. These formats can be compared in our outdoor wall lights.
A garden light for the terrace for evenings
On a sheltered terrace, an IP44 is enough and opens up the choice to glazed lanterns. The ZenEclat Japanese lantern, in frosted glass and with an E27 socket, diffuses a wider light than a spotlight. The Salamanca, in aluminium and glass, hangs from 130 down to 36 cm above a coffee table. The rest of the catalogue can be browsed in all our lights.
How do you choose the IP protection rating of a garden light?
The IP rating measures resistance to water and dust. For a garden light, IP44 is suitable under a canopy, IP54 for a sheltered terrace, IP65 for a facade exposed to rain, IP67 for very damp areas. Check this rating before buying, it determines the lifespan of the product.
IP44 or IP65: which protection for outdoors?
IP44 withstands light rain and splashes, provided the light is under a roof overhang or a canopy. IP65 resists heavy rain and jets, without shelter. On a fully exposed facade, choose IP65: this is the case for the Sentinel wall light in black aluminium and the round Ciralla, both in 18 W.
Waterproof garden light: what does IP67 mean?
IP67 allows temporary immersion, so repeated splashes and jet cleaning. This is the rating to aim for at the edge of a pool or on a wall battered by sea spray. In damp interiors, outdoor LED lighting remains overkill: an IP44 bathroom wall light is enough.
| IP rating | Resistance | Recommended rooms |
|---|---|---|
| IP44 | Light rain, splashes | Sheltered terrace, entrance under a canopy |
| IP54 | Dust and splashes | Terrace, moderately exposed wall |
| IP65 | Heavy rain and jets | Facade, exposed outdoor area |
| IP67 | Temporary immersion | Very damp area, poolside |
| IP20 | No outdoor protection | Indoors only |
Which socket and colour temperature for a garden light?
The garden lights in the collection mainly use an integrated LED, then E27, GU10, G9 or G4 sockets. For a warm light, choose a warm white (2700-3500K); to light an entrance or a passage, a cool white (4500-6500K) provides more contrast.
Integrated LED or E27 bulb?
The integrated LED cannot be replaced, but it offers a uniform rendering and a high IP rating without a seal around a socket. The E27 socket lets you choose the bulb, including later a connected or dimmable version: this is the case for lanterns and most of the metal lights in the selection. GU10 is suitable for adjustable spotlights, G4 for compact wall lights.
Warm white or cool white for outdoors?
Warm white (2700-3500K) extends a terrace in the evening without harshness. Neutral white (3500-4500K) remains readable on a path or a staircase. Cool white (4500-6500K) marks the angles and secures an entrance. A dimmable light lets you adjust the intensity according to the time.
| Socket | Type | Available temperatures | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Integrated LED | LED module | Warm, neutral, cool white | Main lighting, entrance, facade |
| E27 | Screw bulb | Depending on the bulb chosen | Lanterns, pendants |
| GU10 | Pin bulb | Warm white | Wall lights, spotlights |
| G9 | Fine pin bulb | Depending on the bulb chosen | Decorative pendants |
| G4 | Pin bulb | Depending on the bulb chosen | Compact wall lights |
Which materials withstand the outdoors for a garden light?
Aluminium and stainless steel resist corrosion well outdoors. Metal adds character, glass diffuses a soft light, acrylic stays light and impact resistant. These materials make up the majority of the garden lights in the collection, often combined to blend style and durability.
Aluminium or stainless steel?
Aluminium is light, does not rust and is easy to paint: it dominates wall light bodies. Stainless steel costs more but ages without tarnishing, useful by the sea. Many models combine metal for the structure and acrylic for the diffuser, such as the LuminMotion tube wall light in IP65.
Glass garden light: maintenance and style
Glass, frosted or glazed, softens the light point and ages well if water does not stagnate in the bowl. A glass cleaner is enough, without abrasive. Our glass lights often mix glass and aluminium to keep the slimness without fragility.
Where to install a garden light: terrace, entrance, facade?
A garden light is installed as a wall light on a facade, a terrace wall or near an entrance. For an entrance, a square or round wall light illuminates the passage. For a terrace, a lantern or a wall tube creates an atmosphere. The height and orientation depend on the use and the IP rating.
A garden light for the entrance that guides the step
On either side of a door, two wall lights fitted at shoulder height draw a frame and prevent the shadow of your own body on the lock. A model with a sensor such as the Sensora lights the passage without a switch. For an outdoor corridor or a covered path, also see the corridor light.
Height and orientation depending on use
In general, an entrance wall light is fixed between 1.80 and 2.20 m from the ground, and terrace ambient lighting lower, around 1.20 to 1.60 m, to light without dazzling seated people. Direct the flow towards the wall or the ground rather than towards the eyes. A long wall tube, from 120 to 240 cm, covers an entire wall.
How do you match a garden light with the style of the house?
For a contemporary facade, a black or white garden light in aluminium blends in easily. A gold or bronze model adds a decorative touch on a light wall. The modern style favours square or tube lines, while vintage takes inspiration from glazed lanterns.
Black or white garden light?
Black disappears on a dark or stone wall and highlights the angles on a light render. White blends into a cream facade or wood cladding. Both finishes can be found in our black lights and our white lights, often on the same shapes.
Gold garden light: dare the luminous touch
Gold, bronze and brass warm up a white wall or raw concrete, in a small format so as not to saturate. This is the role of the gold Ciralla, whose round body contrasts with square wall lights. Our gold lights extend this shade indoors.
Original living room light and garden light: how do you create continuity?
An original living room light can pick up the codes of a garden light: metal or glass materials, black or gold colours, square or tube shapes. For a transition to the dining room, a pendant above the table extends the atmosphere. These neighbouring collections share finishes and colour temperatures.
Original light: which rooms to link?
Using the same family of materials between the bay window and the living room is enough to create the link. An original living room light in black metal responds to a black facade wall light, and home lighting keeps a single colour temperature from one room to the next. Glass and metal flow well between the two.
Dining room light: which transition?
Above the table, a pendant light in warm white extends the lit terrace. Allow in general 75 to 85 cm between the bottom of the pendant and the tabletop. Our dining room light picks up the metal and glass of the outdoor models, with a G9 or E27 socket.
To go further, the original living room light gathers the pieces where this continuity is most visible.
How do you install and maintain a garden light?
To install a garden light, cut the power, fix the bracket to the wall with screws suited to the material, connect according to the instructions, then screw on the diffuser. Maintain with a soft, non-abrasive cloth. Regularly check the sealing of the gaskets. Designix provides secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and customer service.
How do you install an outdoor wall light?
Drill at the diameter of the wall plugs, pass the cable through the rear cable gland, tighten the bracket on a flat wall. A poorly tightened terminal block or a pinched gasket lets water in, even in IP65. If doubt remains about the connection to the mains, call an electrician: the warranty covers the product, not the installation.
How do you clean a garden light?
Warm water and mild soap on aluminium and acrylic, glass cleaner on glass, dry cloth on metal. Avoid abrasive sponges and solvents that tarnish the finishes. Once a year, tighten the screws and remove leaves caught in the bowl.

Frequently asked questions about garden lights
What is the best outdoor light?
There is no single best outdoor light: it all depends on the location. For an exposed facade, a model such as an IP65 square LED wall light is suitable. For a sheltered terrace, IP44 is enough. The choice is then made on style, material and the desired colour temperature.
What are the drawbacks of LED lamps?
Some LEDs have a directional rendering, less diffuse than an incandescent bulb, and their temperature can be cool. Not all are dimmer compatible. Check the stated temperature and dimmer compatibility before choosing your light, outdoors as well as indoors.
Where can you find an original pendant light?
An original pendant light can be found in our pendant light collection, with flower, ball or tube shapes. Check the ceiling height and the G9 or E27 socket. For outdoors, choose an IP44 rating minimum. The Soirée Enchantée pendant combines metal, glass and steel.
Which dining room light should you choose?
For a dining room, a pendant above the table diffuses a centred light. Choose a warm white, around 2700 to 3500K, for a friendly atmosphere. The height depends on the table and the ceiling, often 75 to 85 cm above the tabletop. Our pendant light collection offers G9 or E27 models.
