A shower spotlight is chosen first on its ingress protection rating and its power supply: IP44 minimum around the shower, IP65 if there are direct splashes, very low voltage inside the shower tray. Then come the shape, the mounting and how easy it is to replace the light source.

Contents: IP rating, 12 V or 230 V, placement, layout, spotlight shape, replacement, wiring, choosing to last.

What IP rating does a shower spotlight need?

For a shower, aim for at least IP44 at the perimeter and IP65 near direct splashes. Inside the shower tray, a very low voltage 12 V supply is safer. Also check that the chosen luminaire clearly states its IP rating and its use in damp environments.

The IP rating has two digits. The first covers solid bodies, dust and fingers; the second covers water, and that is the one that decides here. The higher the water digit, the greater the protection against splashes, jets and then temporary immersion. A low rating in a wet zone, and water eventually reaches the components.

Which IP rating to choose depending on the shower zone
Location IP rating to choose Power supply Point to watch
In the shower tray or on the shower wall IPX7 Very low voltage 12 V only Sealing of the gasket and cable gland
Above and around the shower IPX4 minimum, IP65 safer 230 V possible on a protected circuit Mounting outside the direct jet
In the immediate vicinity of the shower IP44 minimum 230 V Distance from splashes
Rest of the room IP20 to IP23 depending on exposure 230 V Nothing particular

IP65 shower spotlight: when should you choose it?

This collection currently contains no products: no material, no base, no ingress protection rating, no light temperature, no dimension, no style and no room can be described here.

IP67 or IP44 waterproof shower spotlight: what is the difference?

IP44 stops splashes and suits the perimeter of the wet zone. IP67 withstands temporary immersion and is only justified very close to the shower tray, with a suitable power supply. A well-placed IP44 is better than a high rating in the wrong place: browse the spotlights designed for the bathroom to compare actual ratings before deciding.

A shower spotlight in 12 V or 230 V: what should you plan for?

The voltage decides the installation as much as the safety. Near water, very low voltage requires a transformer to be housed somewhere, often in a false ceiling or a service duct. 230 V removes this box but remains prohibited within the shower tray volume, where only very low voltage is permitted.

12 V shower spotlight: why very low voltage?

Twelve volts limits the consequences of an insulation fault in a zone where you are barefoot and wet. The circuit becomes more tolerant of residual moisture. In return, each point depends on the transformer: if several spotlights fail together, that is what to check first.

Can you keep 230 V near the shower?

Yes, above and around the shower, with a sufficient ingress protection rating and a protected circuit. 230 V avoids the need for space for the transformer and simplifies replacing the light source. For the relevant models, look at the recessed ceiling models: the product sheets state the voltage and the rating.

Where to place the spotlight above the shower and at what distance?

Place the spotlight above the shower tray, slightly offset from the shower head. A point centred exactly on the shower head throws light into your eyes and makes the wet wall glisten. Offset towards the outside of the water zone, it lights the body without dazzling.

Ceiling spotlight distance: how do you calculate it?

The gap from the walls depends on two things: the beam angle and the ceiling height. A narrow beam requires a spotlight further from the wall to avoid a bright patch; a wide beam tolerates less proximity to the wall. The right reference is not a fixed dimension but a cone of light that stays within the shower zone.

Spotlight in the shower: should you light the wall?

A wall lit from the side gives relief to the tiling and avoids the feeling of a dark well. Then allow an extra point near the wall, aimed at the tiles, rather than one more spotlight in the centre of the ceiling. The result matters more than the number of points.

How to lay out ceiling spotlights, from the shower to the living room?

Align the spotlights on an axis, with regular spacing, without placing them too close to walls or corners. This rule applies in the bathroom as elsewhere: it is regularity that gives a clean ceiling, not quantity.

How to lay out ceiling spotlights?

Mark the axes on the floor before drilling, starting from the centre of the room or the furniture to be lit. Two symmetrical rows are better than a scattered arrangement. A pencil mark avoids failed holes in a ceiling you do not want to redo.

What distance between two ceiling spotlights?

Spacing is set by the ceiling height and the beam angle: the higher the ceiling, the further apart the points so that the cones meet. Spacing too tight creates over-lit zones; too wide, it leaves dark gaps between the points.

Living room ceiling spotlight layout: what rules for a living area?

In a living area, the living room ceiling spotlight layout follows a logic of zones: a point over the sofa, one over the coffee table, a line along a bookcase. Avoid the uniform grid, which flattens the room. The spotlights for the living room and the LED versions for a living area suit this zoning; for a hallway, apply the same regularity with the hallway spotlights.

Recessed, adjustable or ceiling spotlight: which shape for the shower?

The shape is chosen on the support and the effect, not on the catalogue photo. A false ceiling accepts recessed and adjustable models; a solid ceiling requires a surface version or a track. The adjustable one is set after installation, which forgives an approximate calculation.

Which spotlight shape for the shower
Type of spotlight Where it is installed What it brings To check before purchase
Fixed recessed In a false ceiling above the shower tray Flush with the surface, clean result IP rating and available depth
Adjustable Above or at the edge of the shower Aims at a wall or the floor, set after installation Pivot range and how well the setting holds
Surface ceiling Without a cut-out in the support Installation without cutting Visible height and IP rating
On a track Bathroom or dressing room ceiling Modules that can be moved along the track Track length and module compatibility

Adjustable spotlight: what is the point in a shower?

It lets you aim at the wall, the floor or a niche after installation, without touching the ceiling. In a narrow bathroom, this adjustment compensates for an imperfect location. Adjustable spotlights require in return a pivot that holds over time.

Surface or recessed ceiling spotlight: what to choose?

Recessed is the obvious choice when the false ceiling already exists and you want a smooth surface. Surface-mounted, the spotlight is installed without cutting, but remains visible, which matters in a low room. The adjustable spotlight track answers the case where the layout must change after the work.

How to change a recessed spotlight or its bulb?

Switch off the power at the circuit breaker, remove the bezel or the glass by pulling gently, then unscrew or unclip the light source. A GU10 base spotlight just needs a new bulb; an LED spotlight with an integrated source is replaced as a complete unit, with the connector.

How to change the bulb of an adjustable spotlight?

Turn the ring towards you to access the light source, remove the bezel, change the bulb for a model with the same base and the same wattage, then put the ring back on its axis. Poor realignment leaves the spotlight crooked and can damage the gasket. GU10 base spotlights are the simplest to replace.

Changing a recessed spotlight in a kitchen cabinet: what precautions?

Under a wall unit, access is from below: release the springs, disconnect the connector, watch the thickness of the cabinet and the heat above. Refit a model of the same diameter. For this type of installation, see how to light a kitchen worktop.

Wiring spotlights: in series or in parallel?

In parallel, each spotlight receives the same voltage and keeps its brightness if another fails. In series, the voltage is divided and a burnt-out source cuts the whole circuit: 230 V spotlights are not wired in series. Parallel is the rule on a spotlight circuit.

Parallel spotlight wiring: how is it wired?

The supplies of each point start from the same origin: live with live, neutral with neutral, earth with earth. Each branch remains electrically independent. The connection is made with the power off, and in a wet zone by a professional who validates the circuit.

Series or parallel spotlight wiring: what mistakes to avoid?

Two pitfalls recur: mixing cable cross-sections on the same line, and forgetting the transformer in very low voltage. A 12 V spotlight connected without a transformer does not light up; an undersized transformer makes the whole set flicker. Low-consumption LED spotlights require verified compatibility with the power supply.

Which shower spotlight to choose to last in a damp room?

Choose an IP rating consistent with the location, a light source that is easy to replace or a quality integrated LED, and a finish that withstands humidity without marking. Regular wiping of the glass and a check of the gasket are enough to preserve sealing. The colour is chosen on the result, not on the trend.

White or black colour: what result in the bathroom?

White disappears into a light ceiling and keeps a room bright. Black draws clean points on a white ceiling and matches matt taps. The white finishes and the black spotlights can be compared on each model's product sheet.

How to maintain a spotlight in the shower?

Switch off the power, wipe the glass with a soft non-abrasive cloth, dry it, then check that the gasket has not hardened or yellowed. A worn gasket lets steam through, even on a well-protected spotlight. For adjustable accent lighting, dimmer-compatible spotlights complete the set.

Frequently asked questions

What standard applies to a spotlight in a shower?

The French electrical standard divides the bathroom into volumes. The closer you get to the shower tray, the higher the required water protection, up to temporary immersion in volume 0, with very low voltage. Have the connection validated by an installer before work.

Do you need an IP65 or IP44 shower spotlight?

It all depends on the position. An IP44 protects against splashes and is enough at the perimeter of the wet zone. Closest to the shower, an IP65 also protects against water jets and remains the prudent choice. Inside the shower tray, the rating must be higher and the supply very low voltage.

Ceiling spotlight distance: how to set it?

It is set by the ceiling height and the beam angle, not at random. Avoid placing spotlights too close to walls and corners so as not to create a bright patch, and aim for regular spacing. Marking on the floor before drilling avoids rework.

How to change a recessed LED ceiling spotlight?

Switch off the circuit, unclip the bezel, disconnect the connector, then replace the complete unit if the LED is integrated. A GU10 base model just needs a new bulb. Check the IP rating of the replacement before closing the ceiling.

Where to find ceiling spotlights suitable for a bathroom?

The shop's product sheets state the IP rating, material, voltage and base of each reference, which allows comparison before ordering. Go to the surface ceiling spotlights or the LED spotlights depending on the support available in your home.
