IP65 outdoor spotlights are chosen first by the area to be lit: a wall light or an adjustable spotlight mounted high for the terrace, low spots aimed at the ground for a path, a wide-beam floodlight for a facade. The IP65 rating allows rain and water jets from all directions, but never immersion in a pool. Adjustable models such as the Saler IP65 let you direct the beam; the price and best price are shown on each product page.

What does the IP65 rating mean on an outdoor spotlight?
IP65 is a protection rating: the 6 means the fitting is totally protected against dust, the 5 that it withstands water jets from all directions. An IP65 outdoor spotlight can therefore be installed outside, in the rain or near a watered area, but it must not be immersed: for a pool, a higher rating is required. The IP65 outdoor spotlights in the collection share this level, so it is up to you to choose the shape and orientation.
Can an IP65 outdoor spotlight stay outside all year round?
Yes, that is exactly what it is for. Watertightness relies on three elements: the closing gasket, the cable gland where the cable enters, and water drainage. A fitting that is not properly closed or whose gasket has hardened lets moisture in. Check the gasket once a year, especially after winter, and refit the spotlight without forcing the screws.
In which areas should an IP65 outdoor spotlight be installed?
On a terrace, a path, a facade wall, a low wall, a garden shed or around a swimming pool outside the immersion zone. For a garden with no electrical supply, look instead at the solar models, which avoid any wiring. If you are first looking for the available shapes and formats, browse our full lighting range before filtering by use.
Which IP65 outdoor spotlight should you choose for a terrace, a path or a facade?
The choice depends on the surface to be lit. For a terrace, a wall light or an adjustable spotlight fixed high up lights without glare; for a path, low spots aimed at the ground mark the way; for a facade, you look for a wide beam or a floodlight. Black or white finishes are chosen according to the surface, whether a light wall or dark render.
| Type of spotlight | Where to install it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustable ground spotlight | Path, terrace edge, planting bed | Adjustable orientation, stable fixing, beam aimed at the ground |
| Outdoor wall light | Terrace wall, facade, entrance | Mounting height, beam width, finish matching the wall |
| Recessed spotlight | Slab, low wall, step | Cut-out diameter, drainage, condition of the gasket |
| Outdoor floodlight | Facade, large garden, area to monitor | Power, wide beam, sound mounting bracket |
| Spotlight with sensor | Entrance, corner of the house, rarely used passage | Detection range and field, sensor orientation |
An outdoor wall light for the terrace, or a ground spotlight?
The wall light illuminates the wall and the nearby area, at a height that avoids looking at the source: it suits a covered terrace, an entrance or a facade wall. The ground spotlight, on the other hand, draws a cone on the target surface and is mainly used to mark the way. The two combine very well on the same terrace. Find the wall formats in the white outdoor LED spotlights and the dark variants among the matte black references.
Black or white IP65 outdoor spotlight: which to choose according to the wall?
The finish is there to make the fitting forgettable. On light render or pale stone, the white versions blend into the surface. On dark cladding, dark brick or grey stone wall, a black housing is less noticeable. If the spotlight is instead meant to be a visible detail, the designer outdoor spotlights fully embrace their presence.

How do you choose the light colour and power of an outdoor spotlight?
The colour temperature sets the mood: around 2700 K the light is warm and relaxed, towards 3000 K it stays soft, at 4000 K it becomes more neutral and readable. Power is judged by the flux shown on the product page: at equal power, a narrow beam reaches further, a wide beam covers more surface.
| Colour temperature | Rendering | Where to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 2700 K | Warm light, close to a classic bulb | Terrace, outdoor meals, stone facade |
| 3000 K | Slightly warm white, soft | Garden, path, poolside |
| 4000 K | Neutral white, more readable | Entrance, utility path, garage side |
| 6000 K | Cool white, marked contrast | Planting beds, highlighting plants |
Which colour temperature for a terrace in the evening?
Stay in the warm range: 2700 K for a meal or an evening with friends, 3000 K if you want a little more readability without turning to white. Cool white, around 6000 K, flattens the natural tones of stone and wood and tires the eye in the evening. To adjust the intensity according to the moment, dimmable spotlights let you lower the light after dinner.
Lumens or watts: what should you look at on the packaging?
Watt measures consumption, lumen measures the light produced, and kelvin the tint. Two fittings of the same power can give very different amounts of light: compare the flux and the beam angle, not the watt alone. A narrow beam concentrates light on a small surface and will appear brighter on the ground.
Which E27 bulb should you choose for an outdoor spotlight?
An outdoor spotlight with an E27 socket takes a screw-in bulb, which means you can replace it without changing the fitting. Watertightness comes from the fitting, not the bulb: it is the IP65 rating of the spotlight that protects the assembly. Choose a bulb with the right colour temperature and the right flux for the use.
E27 socket or integrated LED: what is the difference in use?
With an E27 socket, you stay in control: you can change the power or the tint later, or replace a burnt-out bulb for a few pounds. An integrated LED encloses the source in the fitting and allows a slimmer housing, with no visible bulb. For a very flat look against a wall, look instead at the modern-style spotlights with an integrated source.
Can you change the bulb of an IP65 outdoor spotlight?
Yes, if the model has a screw-in socket: you open the fitting, replace the bulb and close it again, making sure to refit the gasket correctly. A pinched or forgotten gasket loses watertightness immediately. If the model has an integrated LED, the source cannot be replaced and the whole fitting will need to be changed when the time comes.
Do you need an IP65 outdoor spotlight in 12V or 230V?
A 230 V spotlight connects directly to the mains, on a junction box or a dedicated outlet. A 12 V spotlight works with a transformer and runs at low voltage, which makes it practical in a garden, at the edge of a pool or where the cable runs along the ground. 12 V requires a properly sized power supply.
IP65 outdoor spotlight 12V: which transformer should you plan for?
The transformer must cover the sum of the powers of the connected spotlights, with a margin so it does not overheat. The longer the cable, the more voltage drop is felt at the end of the line: better a slightly oversized transformer than one that is just enough. Place it in a dry and accessible spot.
IP65 outdoor spotlight 230V: how do you secure the connection?
Switch off at the consumer unit, use a waterproof junction box, a tight cable gland and a cable suitable for outdoor use: 230 V does not forgive approximation. This connection is generally entrusted to an installer. For areas with no electrical supply, solar outdoor LED spotlights remove the cable question entirely.
How should spotlights be arranged on the ceiling of a covered terrace?
Spotlights are distributed according to what you want to light, not according to a fixed spacing: space them further apart for general lighting, bring them closer to highlight a wall or a passage. Aim the beam at the surface to be lit and never towards the eyes. On an outdoor soffit, keep the IP65 spotlights aligned with the lines of the structure.
How many spotlights to mark out a path?
The number follows the length of the path and the type of ground, not a universal rule: a light surface reflects more light than dark gravel, and a curved path needs tighter points in the bends. Start on one side, switch on in the evening and adjust. For a winding path, black adjustable spotlights can be set after installation, without taking anything apart.
How do you avoid glare from an outdoor spotlight?
Three levers: aim the beam at the ground or the wall, choose a model whose source is recessed into the housing, and never place a low spotlight in the axis of a passage. A shield or an anti-glare grid often solves the problem on a ground spotlight. A beam that is too narrow on a light wall produces the same unpleasant effect.
Adjustable, recessed or with sensor: which version for which need?
An adjustable spotlight is set after installation and suits situations where the target changes or where the light needs to be framed. A recessed model blends into the ground or the wall and is less noticeable. A sensor version switches on only when someone passes, handy for an entrance or a rarely used side of the house. All three remain possible in IP65.
Outdoor spotlight with sensor: where should it be placed?
Directly above the passage to be covered, at a moderate height, and oriented so as to sweep the arrival area rather than the street. A sensor pointed at a busy road triggers constantly. Adjust the range and the time delay after a few days of real use, not on the evening of installation. For a rarely used side of the house, this version avoids leaving the light on continuously.
Recessed ground spotlight: what should you check before drilling?
The cut-out diameter, the depth available under the slab and water drainage: a recessed fitting installed in a hollow fills up and eventually oxidises. Plan a drainage layer under the housing. White recessed spotlights blend discreetly into a light terrace, and metal housings withstand exposure better than thin plastic.
Unsure between two orientations? First compare the adjustable LED spotlights and the white adjustable spotlights: adjustment is done once the fitting is in place, which leaves room for manoeuvre if the target changes.
How do you install and maintain an IP65 outdoor spotlight?
Cut the power before working, fix the bracket to a sound surface, then close the fitting again, checking that the gasket and the cable gland are properly in place: this is what keeps it watertight over time. Clean with a soft cloth and soapy water, without a direct jet on the gaskets or any abrasive product.
How do you keep an outdoor spotlight watertight over time?
A gasket gets pinched, hardens or becomes covered in limescale. On each intervention, wipe it, check that it is not cut and refit the screws without overdoing it so as not to crush the lip. The cable gland should grip the cable without biting into it. If the housing takes on water despite everything, it is often drainage that is missing under the fitting, not the gasket.
Maintenance: how do you clean an outdoor spotlight without damaging it?
Warm water and mild soap, a non-abrasive cloth or sponge, then dry. A pressure washer aimed at the gaskets forces water inside, even on an IP65 model. On metal models, a product that is too aggressive dulls the finish: for a sober look that ages well, designer spotlights and designer LED spotlights rely on simple lines that are easy to maintain.

Frequently asked questions about IP65 outdoor spotlights
What does the IP65 rating mean?
IP65 is a two-digit protection rating: the 6 indicates that the fitting is totally protected against dust, the 5 that it withstands water jets. An IP65 spotlight can therefore be installed outside, in the rain and near a watered area, but never immersed in water.
How many lumens are needed to light a terrace?
There is no single figure: it all depends on the surface, the mounting height, the beam and the mood you want. Compare the flux shown on each product page and the beam angle, favour an adjustable or dimmable model, then adjust after a first evening test.
How many lumens should you plan for an outdoor floodlight?
The right reference is not a fixed number but the relationship between flux, distance and target surface. A very bright floodlight mounted too high causes glare; a more modest model, well aimed, is enough for a wall or a planting bed. Check the flux and the angle on the product page, then adjust.
What is the difference between lumens and ANSI lumens?
Lumens measure the total luminous flux emitted by a source. ANSI lumens are a standardised measurement protocol used for video projectors, to compare devices using the same method. For an outdoor spotlight or floodlight, we therefore simply talk about lumens.
Where can I find an outdoor light projector?
It is chosen from outdoor lighting collections, filtering by IP65 rating, finish and type of power supply. Compare the power, the beam and the fixing before ordering, then check that the mounting bracket is sound at the time of installation.
