To light a kitchen, choose the spotlight according to the zone: a recessed or fixed ceiling model for general light, an adjustable spotlight above the worktop and under the wall units. The whole selection is IP20, LED, in aluminium or glass, in black or white.
Which type of kitchen spotlights should you choose?
Kitchen spotlights are chosen first according to the zone to be lit: a recessed or fixed ceiling model for general light, an adjustable spotlight above the worktop and under the wall units. All the models in this selection are IP20, intended for indoor use, in LED, aluminium or glass.
Recessed kitchen spotlight or ceiling kitchen spotlight?
A recessed spotlight is installed in a cut-out in the ceiling: it becomes a flush disc, which suits low ceilings and kitchens where you want to hide the source. A surface-mounted ceiling spotlight is screwed directly onto the support, with no cutting, and is easier to replace. Our selection of recessed kitchen spotlights covers the first case, while the surface-mounted models in the spotlight collection cover the second.
Under-cabinet or worktop kitchen spotlight?
Under a wall unit, you need a slim model directed towards the worktop, to avoid the shadow of your body. The Basis black spotlight Sylvane is a square in aluminium, in warm white, suited to large kitchens with high ceilings. For a smaller, more modular point, the Focus Zoom is a black adjustable spotlight.
How to arrange spotlights in a kitchen?
Light the work zones first, then the rest. A spotlight above the worktop avoids the shadow cast by your body, a ceiling point lights the circulation, a wall spotlight highlights the splashback. Better a few well-placed points than uniform light across the whole room.
Wall kitchen spotlight: where to position it?
A wall spotlight goes above the splashback, between the worktop and the wall units, with the beam directed downwards and slightly forwards. Placed too close to the wall, it crushes the light onto the tiles and leaves the worktop in shadow. An adjustable spotlight model lets you correct the angle after installation.
Ceiling kitchen spotlight: how to space the points?
On the ceiling, arrange the points according to the units: one spotlight directly above each work zone, one or two for circulation, keeping a regular distance between the lights. A constant spacing gives readable light; an isolated point creates a patch. To go further, see our LED kitchen spotlights.
| Zone | Suitable spotlight type | Light temperature | To check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Worktop and under-cabinet | Adjustable spotlight, directed beam | Neutral white 3500 to 4500 K for precision, warm white 2700 to 3500 K for a soft rendering | IP20, integrated LED, moderate power from 10 to 12 W |
| Ceiling, circulation | Recessed or fixed ceiling spotlight | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K | IP20, LED, 20 to 26 W |
| Wall and splashback | Adjustable wall spotlight | Neutral white 3500 to 4500 K | IP20, aluminium, beam direction |
| Opening onto the dining area | Adjustable spotlight, possibly combined with a pendant | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K | IP20, dimmer if the model offers it |
Chandelier, pendant, ceiling light or kitchen spotlight: which kitchen light should you choose?
A chandelier or kitchen pendant brings a central point and ambient light, often above a table or an island. A kitchen ceiling light, a recessed spotlight or an adjustable spotlight project a more directed light, useful above the worktop. The two combine in a modern kitchen decor.
A kitchen chandelier that lights well: how to complete it with spotlights?
A chandelier or pendant places the light high up, in the centre of the room: it lights the ambiance and the dining area, not the worktop where you chop. The solution is to complete it with spotlights directed at the work zones. A multi-point light, like those in the full range of Designix lights, plays both roles in the same room.
Italian design kitchen pendant or modern kitchen ceiling light?
The pendant hangs down into the room and creates a landmark above the island or the table. The ceiling light stays flat against the ceiling and suits circulation areas, small kitchens and low ceilings. An industrial chandelier, with its metal shapes and wide shade, pairs well with a raw splashback. See also the modern kitchen decor ideas to harmonise the whole.
Which light temperature and power for a kitchen spotlight?
The selection is divided between warm white 2700 to 3500 K, the majority, and neutral white 3500 to 4500 K, which renders food colours more sharply. The available powers vary according to the models. Warm suits meals, neutral suits preparation zones.
Warm white or neutral white above the worktop?
Neutral white, between 3500 and 4500 K, reproduces greens, reds and flesh tones better: practical for peeling and cooking. Warm white, between 2700 and 3500 K, gives a softer light, pleasant in the evening and over a table. A kitchen can mix the two, provided you do not put them side by side, at the risk of a visible contrast on the units.
Which kitchen spotlight for a worktop: 10 W, 12 W or 24 W?
In the collection, the powers are divided mainly into 12 W and 24 W, then 10 W, 20 W and 26 W. A 10 to 12 W point is enough under a wall unit, where the distance to the surface is short. A 20 W and above is used for a ceiling point, higher and wider. On the technology side, the range of LED spotlights is integrated, with no bulb to change, in warm or neutral white depending on the model.
Black kitchen spotlight or white kitchen spotlight: which finish should you choose?
Black spotlights blend into kitchens with dark fronts or dark wood, while white spotlights disappear on a light painted ceiling. Aluminium dominates the selection, with a few glass models for a contemporary or industrial style.
Minimalist black kitchen spotlight
Black marks less on a dark ceiling, a concrete ceiling or a raw wood wall unit. It also draws a graphic line when the shape is a tube. The selection of black spotlights groups the models suited to these interiors, including tubular aluminium pieces.
Contemporary white kitchen spotlight
On a white ceiling or light cladding, a white spotlight fades away and lets you see the light without the source. It is the choice that ages best in a minimalist or contemporary kitchen. The white spotlights include round formats, in warm or neutral white.
| Criterion | What the collection offers | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Mostly aluminium, glass on a few models | Aluminium understated and discreet, glass more decorative in contemporary or industrial style |
| Colour | Black, white | Black on wood or dark fronts, white on a light ceiling |
| Shape | Tube, round | Tube for a graphic design, round for a discreet line |
| Socket | Integrated LED, E14 | LED for even light with no bulb to change, E14 to replace the bulb |
| Protection rating | IP20 | Indoor use, protected from water splashes |
| Warranty | 5 years on most, 2 years on a few models | Secures the purchase over time |
Adjustable, dimmable or remote-controlled kitchen spotlight: which models exist?
Some models are adjustable to direct the beam, others accept a dimmer, and one model is controlled by remote. These options mainly serve to adapt the intensity between preparation and meals. The rest of the collection works with integrated LED, with no bulb to change, except for one model with an E14 socket.
Dimmable kitchen spotlight: what a dimmer changes
A dimmer lets you lower the intensity once the kitchen is tidied, without needing a second light. The Focus Zoom black combines adjustability and dimmer in 12 W, in neutral white. The other compatible models are grouped in the dimmable spotlights.
Remote-controlled kitchen spotlight: for what use?
The remote control saves you moving when the spotlights are high up or above an island. The Focus LED black is controlled this way, in black aluminium, warm white and 5 W. To simply direct the light without control, the adjustable LED spotlights and the Focus Zoom white remain the most direct solution.
How to install and maintain a kitchen spotlight?
All the models in this selection are IP20: they are installed indoors, protected from water splashes. Fixing to the ceiling or wall follows the manufacturer's instructions. A soft cloth is enough for maintenance: neither aluminium nor glass requires a specific product.
Recessed kitchen spotlight: what to check before drilling
Before cutting, check the available depth above the ceiling and the position of joists or conduits. A recessed spotlight requires a cut-out of the right diameter: the 8.9 cm round model cannot be installed in a cut-out intended for 5.5 cm. The recessed spotlight is therefore chosen with its dimensions in hand.
Can a kitchen spotlight be installed in a damp room?
No: in IP20, these models are intended for dry rooms, kitchen, living room or hallway. Near an open sink or in a bathroom, you need a higher protection rating and a dedicated model, like the bathroom spotlights. One decorative point apart: the Kalo in glass, with an E14 socket, is cleaned with a soft cloth like the others.
What budget and warranty should you plan for a kitchen spotlight?
The kitchen spotlights in the collection cover entry-level models as well as adjustable or controllable versions, the current price being shown on each product page.
Entry-level or dimmable model: what is the difference?
A simple model in aluminium, with integrated LED and in warm or neutral white, covers the essentials of a kitchen. The difference lies in the beam adjustability, compatibility with a dimmer and control, which bring comfort of use rather than a gain in light. The dimmable LED spotlights and the spotlight rails meet the configurations where you want to modulate or group several points.
5-year warranty: what it secures at purchase
A recessed or ceiling-fixed spotlight is harder to replace than a freestanding lamp: the 5-year warranty covering most models secures this type of purchase over time. You buy with secure payment, with tracked delivery and possible returns; the Designix customer service remains reachable to check a dimension or a socket before ordering. Frequently asked questions about the kitchen spotlight
Which type of spotlight for a kitchen?
It all depends on the zone. On the ceiling, a recessed or fixed spotlight provides general light. Above the worktop and under the wall units, an adjustable spotlight with a directed beam avoids working in your own shadow. All the models in this collection are IP20, so intended for indoor use.
How to arrange spotlights in a kitchen?
Start with the work zones: one or two points above the worktop, far enough from the wall not to create shadow. Then add the circulation points on the ceiling, then wall lighting on the splashback. A few well-placed points are better than uniform light.
Do you need a kitchen chandelier or spotlights to light well?
A kitchen chandelier mainly lights the ambiance, above a table or an island. To see what you are chopping, an adjustable or recessed spotlight above the worktop remains more effective. Many kitchens combine the two: a pendant in the centre, spotlights on the work zones.
Under-cabinet kitchen spotlight: which solution should you adopt?
Under a wall unit, look for a slim, adjustable spotlight, in IP20, that directs light onto the worktop without dazzling. Aluminium, the dominant material of the collection, is cleaned with a simple soft cloth. Check the space available under the unit before choosing the model.
Can a kitchen spotlight be installed in a bathroom?
No, the models in this selection are IP20: they are intended for dry indoor rooms such as the kitchen, living room or hallway. For a damp room, you need a higher protection rating and a dedicated model, which you will find in the bathroom spotlights.
