Start by counting the distance to the water point: IP44 around the sink and high on the ceiling, IP65 close to the shower and bathtub. Then comes the format: a round or square recessed model blends into the ceiling, a double cylinder surface-mounted unit directs light toward the vanity top.
Which waterproof bathroom spotlights should you choose?
The choice comes down to three points: water protection, format and socket. A round or square recessed spotlight fits into the ceiling, while a surface-mounted model with two adjustable tubes lights a specific area. The white, black or silver finish is chosen to match the wall covering and the taps.
Waterproof bathroom spotlights: recessed or surface-mounted?
A recessed model disappears into the ceiling and requires a cut-out. The Ø 8.5 cm, H 7 cm rounds, such as the Sigrid spotlight, suit shallow ceilings. The same size exists in the Marissa in white and the Nivéo in silver with a gold ring. To compare the available shapes, browse the Designix lighting catalogue.
Surface-mounted models are fixed without drilling a hole. The double cylinders of Ø 24 cm and H max 15 cm, Orbia in plastic and metal with a brushed silver finish and Cylia in black, send light toward the vanity top or the mirror.
Adjustable waterproof bathroom spotlights: what are they for?
An adjustable spotlight is useful when fixed lighting would leave an area in shadow: alcove, mirror, vanity top. Two tubes provide two directions at once, which a fixed recessed model cannot do. Adjustable spotlights therefore usefully complete a wet room without multiplying light points.
IP44 or IP65: what protection for a bathroom spotlight?
IP44 protects against water splashes and is suitable around the sink or high on the ceiling. IP65 also resists water jets and dust, which makes it suitable for the immediate surroundings of the shower or bathtub. The collection offers both levels of protection.
Waterproof bathroom spotlight standard: what the water zones say
The two digits of the rating are read in order: the first covers solid bodies, the second water. The decision is based on the distance to the water point, not the size of the room.
| Location | Exposure | Suitable protection | Examples from the collection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Near the shower or bathtub | Direct jets and spraying | IP65 | SH-12, SH-13, SH-14, in glass and aluminium |
| Around the sink and vanity top | Splashes and spray | IP44 | Sigrid, Nivéo, Marissa |
| Ceiling, outside the water zone | Steam only | IP44 | Orbia, Cylia |
IP65 models are recognisable by their ribbed or faceted glass: the chrome SH-12, the white square SH-13 and the SH-14 with integrated LED. These three series share glass and aluminium, so the same resistance to humidity, like the other metal models.
Is the IP20 rating suitable for a bathroom?
No. IP20 only protects against solid bodies and resists neither splashes nor condensed steam that settles on the ceiling. In a wet room, IP44 is the minimum, and IP65 in spray zones. An unprotected light point is reserved for dry rooms, such as a home office or a bedroom.
Waterproof ceiling bathroom spotlights IP65: how to install them?
A recessed spotlight fits into a hole made in the ceiling, a surface-mounted spotlight is fixed directly onto it. Switch off the power before any work, respect the cut-out diameter of the model and check that the GU10, GU5.3 or LED socket matches the chosen module.
Waterproof ceiling bathroom spotlights IP65: diameter and cut-out
The square SH-13 require 8.4 cm per side, the round SH-12 a diameter of 6.8 cm, for a height of 3.7 cm in both cases. The SH-14 is only 3.7 cm in diameter and 4.8 cm in height. These shallow depths fit under a low ceiling or a lining. Check the cable passage before drilling, and remember that a surface-mounted model avoids any cut-out on an already finished ceiling.
IP44 bathroom pendant: recessed spotlight or pendant?
A pendant hangs into the space and lights more widely; a recessed spotlight stays discreet and is placed as close as possible to water zones. Above a vanity top, a pendant is suitable if it stays away from the jet. Elsewhere in the home, recessed spotlights for the worktop and those installed in a hallway meet the same need for directed light.
Which light colour should you choose for a bathroom?
Warm white, between 2700 and 3500 K, gives a soft, restful light in the evening. Cool white, from 4500 to 6500 K, lights more sharply and is suitable for the mirror and make-up, where colours are judged. Some models in the collection are offered in one or the other.
Warm white or cool white: which for the mirror?
In front of a mirror, cool light shows true colours and makes make-up easier. For the rest of the room, warm light is relaxing. Two temperatures therefore often coexist on the ceiling: cool above the vanity top, warm for ambience. Orbia and Cylia are listed as warm white, the SH-14 and SH-14 Black as cool white.
Light colour for the living room: keeping consistency throughout the home
It is better to keep the same temperature from one space to another, otherwise the transition is visible when moving from one room to the next. A uniform temperature makes the whole calmer. To adjust the intensity in the evening without changing the shade, dimmable spotlights make the difference, as for lighting a living room with LED spotlights.
Waterproof bathroom spotlights black, white or silver: what effect?
White disappears on a light painted ceiling, black marks the contrast and highlights a room with dark tiles, silver matches taps and chrome profiles. All three finishes exist in the collection, on round as well as square models, with or without a gold ring.
Waterproof bathroom spotlights black: with which tiles?
Black is placed on dark tiles or a graphic wall, where it becomes a deliberate detail. The SH-13 Black in ribbed glass and Cylia in double black tube play this role. Conversely, the white of Marissa fades on a light ceiling. White finishes are reserved for spaces where the light fixture should disappear.
Harmonising the decor for a modern kitchen and the bathroom
Reusing the same design from one room to another avoids mixing styles. A chrome square in the bathroom works with the same square above a worktop, and this is often what holds a modern kitchen decor together. Satin nickel, for its part, follows chrome taps without competing with them.
How do you maintain a waterproof spotlight and change the bulb?
A soft cloth is enough on the glass and aluminium; avoid abrasive products and water sprayed on an unprotected spotlight. Models with a GU10 or GU5.3 socket accept a replacement bulb, while versions with integrated LED cannot be dismantled. Switch off the power before any handling.
GU10, GU5.3 or LED socket: what is the difference?
The GU10 is changed with a quarter turn, the GU5.3 is plugged onto two pins. Both accept a replacement bulb, which extends the life of the fixture. The SH-14 series have integrated LED: nothing to change, but the module cannot be replaced. A seal that no longer presses flat causes a loss of waterproofing, so it is better to replace the spotlight than to refit it as it is.
2-year warranty: what does it cover on a waterproof spotlight?
The selection comes with a two-year warranty. It covers defects in the fixture, not bulb wear or a seal damaged by an aggressive cleaning product. For a more elaborate room, ribbed glass can be cleaned without rubbing hard, which preserves the glass of the more design-led pieces.
Where can you install waterproof spotlights outside the bathroom?
Any room exposed to humidity or splashes justifies a protected spotlight: kitchen behind the hob, entrance, hallway, staircase and WC. Several models in the collection are also suitable for the living room, which allows the same design and finish to be kept from one room to another.
Waterproof spotlights for the kitchen and wet rooms
Behind a hob and above a worktop, steam and splashes justify the same reasoning as in a bathroom. LED spotlights for the kitchen give a sharp result on the worktop, and recessed living room spotlights extend the same line into the neighbouring room.
Which light fixture for a WC?
A WC is treated like a small wet room: a compact spotlight is enough, recessed round or square depending on the ceiling. White gives a sharp result in a small space, black marks the contrast. For circulation areas, entrance lighting and staircase spotlights complete the same design.
How do you buy your waterproof spotlights well?
Compare the IP protection, the socket and the finish before confirming, then check the cut-out diameter if the spotlight is recessed. Payment is secure, delivery is tracked and returns are possible. Designix customer service helps with the choice if any doubt remains about the area to be fitted.
Secure payment, tracked delivery and returns
Secure payment, tracked delivery and returns: three points to check before ordering a light fixture. Designix customer service answers on diameter, socket or finish. Budget is a relative matter: plastic and metal models remain affordable, glass and aluminium pieces with a gold ring are positioned higher.
Distributing your spotlights well on the ceiling before ordering
Allow three to four points for an average bathroom, arranged in two lines: one above the vanity top, one for circulation. Space them regularly to avoid shadow areas. To complete the set, browse all our home lighting, then the black colourways and the LED variants for the bedroom.
| Model | Shape | Material | Socket | IP | Dimensions | Finish |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sigrid | Round | Plastic and metal | GU10 | IP44 | Ø 8.5 cm, H 7 cm | Black |
| Nivéo | Round | Plastic and metal | GU10 | IP44 | Ø 8.5 cm, H 7 cm | Silver, gold ring |
| Orbia | Two cylinders | Plastic and metal | GU10 | IP44 | Ø 24 cm, H max 15 cm | Brushed silver |
| SH-12 | Round | Glass and aluminium | GU5.3 | IP65 | Ø 6.8 cm, H 3.7 cm | Chrome or satin nickel |
| SH-13 | Square | Glass and aluminium | GU5.3 | IP65 | W 8.4 x D 8.4 x H 3.7 cm | White, black, chrome, nickel |
| SH-14 | Round | Glass and aluminium | Integrated LED | IP65 | Ø 3.7 cm, H 4.8 cm | White or black |
One last check before confirming: the socket of the bulb you already own, and the depth available above the ceiling. Once these two points are confirmed, the rest is just a matter of finish.
Frequently asked questions
Which spotlight in a bathroom?
A round or square recessed spotlight is suitable for the ceiling, in IP44 around the sink and IP65 near the shower. The format follows the space available: recessed Ø 8.5 cm, glass square 8.4 cm per side, or surface-mounted double cylinder Ø 24 cm.
Is the IP20 rating suitable for a bathroom?
No. IP20 only protects against solid bodies and resists neither splashes nor condensed steam. In a wet room, IP44 is the minimum, and IP65 in spray zones, which the glass and aluminium series in the collection offer.
IP44 bathroom pendant: is it a good solution?
An IP44 pendant is suitable above a vanity top or an island, away from the shower jet. It lights more widely than a spotlight and hangs into the room's space. Near the bathtub, an IP65 recessed spotlight on the ceiling remains safer and more discreet.
Waterproof ceiling bathroom spotlights IP65: where should they be placed?
In IP65, the spotlight is placed near the shower and bathtub, where splashes are direct. A glass square 8.4 cm per side or a ribbed glass round fits easily into a shallow ceiling, with only 3.7 cm of height.
Waterproof bathroom spotlights black: how do you match them?
Black is placed on a dark ceiling or graphic tiles, where it becomes a deliberate detail rather than an invisible element, and matches matt black taps. The collection also offers the same square design in white, chrome and satin nickel.
