Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the right light output?
Allow about 100 to 300 lumens per m²: about 150 lm/m² for a living room, about 350 for a kitchen. Each product page lists the lumens.
At what height should the light be installed?
Above a table: 70-85 cm from the tabletop; in a walkway: at least 2.10 m of clearance below the bulb.
What type of bulb?
Usually E27 or E14, sometimes GU10. Specified on each product page.
Compatible with LEDs and dimmers?
Yes, in most cases; for use with a dimmer, look for the “dimmable” mention.

Start by counting the areas to light, then choose the mounting type: a recessed spotlight sits flush with the slab or decking and leaves the way clear, while a surface-mounted adjustable spotlight fixes to a wall or post and is set once the patio is finished. The selection is mostly IP44, GU10 and 10 W, with one LED model.

Which outdoor spotlights for patio should you choose?

An IP44 outdoor spotlight of 10 W with a GU10 base lights a floor or wall area without glare. Choose a recessed model for a slab or decking, and an adjustable surface-mounted model for a wall, a facade or a plant you want to highlight. So outdoor spotlights for patio are chosen on the mounting surface, not on the shape.

Recessed or surface-mounted spotlight?

Recessed is chosen when the surface is already flat and you want to forget the fitting: it sits flush and frees the way. Surface-mounted is chosen when the wall is the only available support, or when the aiming angle must stay adjustable, for example to follow a shrub as it grows. An IP44 outdoor spotlight set on the ground and a wall light fixed to the facade do not give the same light: one marks an area, the other draws a wall.

GU10 base, what it changes on a patio

The GU10 base leaves the choice of bulb: output, colour temperature and beam can be swapped without taking the fitting apart. It is also the wear part that is replaced on its own, without touching the wiring or the fixing. The same logic applies to recessed patio spotlights as to the surface-mounted models in our lighting catalogue.

Recessed outdoor spotlights for patio: where to fit them?

A recessed spotlight sits flush with the surface: the round models measure 8.5 cm in diameter and 7 cm in height, which makes them discreet in a slab, a wooden board or a low wall. They direct light towards the ground or the wall and leave the patio free of any obstacle.

Outdoor spotlights for a wooden patio

On decking, the recess is made in the thickness of the boards, between two joists. The spotlight then follows the line of the wood and discreetly highlights the patio edge, along a step or a retaining wall. The Sigrid black round spotlight, ø 8.5 cm / H 7 cm stays barely visible on a dark board, while the white Marissa spotlight blends into light decking.

Outdoor spotlights for a concrete patio

In a slab, the recess is prepared when the concrete is poured: once it has set, there is no going back. A low wall takes the same fitting in a wall version, turned towards the ground or the wall. For a cleaner result on a light slab, recessed LED spotlights and adjustable recessed spotlights let you set the direction before final sealing.

Outdoor spotlights for a poolside patio: how to light without glare?

Around a pool, spotlights are aimed at the wall or the ground, never towards swimmers' eyes. The whole selection is IP44, protected against water spray, and stays outside the pool. An adjustable model lets you correct the angle once the patio is finished.

What does IP44 mean for a patio spotlight?

The IP44 rating covers rain and spray, including cleaning with a gentle jet. It does not protect against immersion: no spotlight in this selection goes in the water, neither in the pool nor in a submerged container. That is the limit to know before placing lighting near the water.

Aiming spotlights around the pool

Aim at the perimeter wall, a planter or the walkway floor, keeping the beam low. Cylindrical models such as Tubola and Noro set the angle after installation, which avoids redoing the fixing if the light falls badly. See also the adjustable outdoor spotlights. The adjustable LED spotlights complete the patio perimeter.

Surface-mounted and adjustable spotlights: lighting a wall, a facade or a plant

Surface-mounted spotlights fix to a wall or a facade and are set after installation. The cylindrical and twin-head versions target two separate areas: a wall, a shrub, a step or the path to the door.

Adjustable cylindrical spotlight on a patio wall

An adjustable tube 10 cm in diameter and 12 cm in height suits a post, a pergola upright or a wall return. Adjustment matters most when two neighbouring areas need different angles. Tubola in black and Aquaro in white and silver play the same role depending on the wall behind.

Twin-head spotlight, lighting two areas

A plate 24 cm wide and a maximum of 15 cm high carries two independently adjustable projectors. Cylia, Kalella and Orbia thus cover a whole section of facade, a patio corner or a dining area. The more compact Xenir spotlight remains a decorative detail with an LED base.

Which light colour for the patio?

A warm white light lights the patio without the bluish effect of a cool white and stays comfortable in the evening. Several models in the collection work between 2700 and 3500 K, which helps harmonise the mood between the living room, the kitchen and the patio.

Warm white or cool white outside?

Outdoors, a temperature between 2700 and 3500 K generally gives a light close to incandescent, restful for the eye after sunset. Above 4000 K, the result leans blue and hardens faces around a table. On our models, the warm white range covers several references, not all of them.

Matching the patio to the neighbouring room

The same colour temperature between the living room and the patio avoids a visual break when the sliding door stays open. The same reasoning guides the choice of a warm white light in the living room or a modern kitchen decor: you extend the indoor mood instead of contradicting it.

How do you plan a 50 m2 patio?

On a large patio, you separate the areas: a lit path between the door and the garden, a dining or lounge corner treated with soft light, then accent lighting on the walls and planting. Recessed spotlights serve the walkways, adjustable ones emphasise the volumes.

Lighting the walkways of a large patio

The path is treated before the rest: slab edge, step nosing, junction with the garden. A recessed ground spotlight is enough there and calls for no extra source. For outdoor steps and stairs, an adjustable tube is fitted closer to the path.

Also lighting the garden from the patio

Border planting is highlighted as an accent, from the wall or from a post, without flooding the lawn. Grouping by circuit remains the rule: walkways on one side, dining area on the other, accents on a third. The same applies to lighting the entrance too on the same principle.

Which colour and style of spotlight for the patio?

The selection is divided between silver, black and white, with a majority of round shapes and tubes. Black disappears on a dark wall or dark joinery, white blends into a light render, silver highlights a contemporary facade; the styles range from minimalist to vintage.

Black or white outdoor spotlight, which is less visible?

The criterion is the background, not taste: a black body fades into a dark facade and stands out on a light render, the opposite for a white body. The black finishes suit anthracite joinery, the white outdoor spotlights suit light walls.

Modern, contemporary or minimalist style

The styles actually present in the selection are modern, contemporary, minimalist, vintage and original. Contemporary dominates on round shapes and tubes, minimalist is recognisable by a cylindrical body with no visible accessory. The design models play the decorative card, with a single ball-shaped example.

How do you install and maintain an outdoor spotlight on a patio?

Installation depends on the surface: recessed in a slab or a board, or screwed on as a surface mount on a wall. The GU10 base lets you replace the bulb without taking the spotlight apart, and IP44 takes the water spray of a patio. A damp cloth is enough for maintenance.

Drilling a slab or a wooden board

Before drilling, check the available thickness under the surface and the cable route. For a round fitting 8.5 cm in diameter and 7 cm high, the recess must leave room for the whole body, not just the trim. For surface mounting, check the fixing height in relation to the eye: a tube such as Aquaro or Noro is fitted higher than a recessed one.

Changing the bulb and cleaning the spotlight

The bulb comes out from the front, without tools on most models. The glass or ribbed glass is cleaned with clear water and a soft cloth, without abrasive product, to preserve the diffusion. The selection comes with a 2-year warranty, and the bodies combine plastic and metal.

LED or solar outdoor spotlights: which solution for the patio?

A GU10 spotlight is repaired by changing the bulb and is controlled with the rest of the house. A solar solution installs without wiring, but depends on sunlight. The two approaches can coexist on the same patio depending on the areas to light.

Solar spotlights, for which areas?

They suit points far from a power supply: the end of a garden, a bed, the edge of a hedge. Solar solutions and solar LED spotlights install without a trench, which avoids opening up a finished patio. Their consistency in the evening depends on the day's charge.

Mixing wired and solar spotlights

A mixed setup is common: wired for walkways and the dining area, solar for the distant accent. On the wired side, outdoor LED lighting groups the low-consumption references, to which the whole lighting range adds the indoor rooms.

Frequently asked questions about outdoor spotlights for patio

What is the best outdoor light fitting?

There is no single model: on a patio, the right fitting is an IP44 spotlight suited to the surface. Recessed for a slab or decking, adjustable surface-mounted for a wall, with a GU10 base that leaves the choice of bulb and is replaced without taking the fitting apart.

Is an IP44 spotlight waterproof?

IP44 protects against water spray and solid objects, which covers rain and cleaning with a gentle jet. It is not protection against immersion: a patio spotlight does not go in the water, including near a pool.

Outdoor LED spotlights for patio: what is the point?

The LED base concerns one model in the collection; elsewhere the selection uses a GU10 base, which takes a standard LED bulb. In both cases, the lighting stays low consumption and the visual result on the patio is identical.

How do you distribute spotlights on a patio?

You light the walkways and steps first, then the use areas such as the dining corner, then the walls and planting as accents. Grouping spotlights by circuit avoids switching on the whole patio at once and preserves differentiated light.

Can an outdoor spotlight be left outside all year?

Yes: the selection is IP44, designed for outdoor use, and the models come with a 2-year warranty. The bodies combine plastic and metal, with glass on some models. Clean the glass with clear water to keep the light quality.

Where can you find a solar spotlight to light a patio?

Solar spotlights form a separate range, installable without wiring. They suit areas far from a power supply, such as the end of the garden or a bed. On the patio itself, a wired GU10 spotlight stays more consistent in the evening.

Is an adjustable spotlight useful on a patio?

An adjustable spotlight is useful as soon as the same area needs two different lights, or when the angle is decided after installation. Cylindrical and twin-head models let you aim at a wall, a shrub or a step, then correct the setting over time.
