Start by choosing the mounting type (track, surface-mounted or recessed), then the light temperature according to use. This selection brings together modern spotlights in aluminium or metal, mostly in black or white, usually with integrated LED, with adjustable projectors to direct toward the worktop, the sofa or a wall.
Which types of modern spotlights to choose: track, surface-mounted or recessed?
Three families cover most rooms. The track spotlight gathers several adjustable projectors on a single bar: the bar is fixed, then each head is turned toward the area to be lit. The surface-mounted spotlight is installed directly on the ceiling or wall, without cutting. The recessed spotlight requires a cut-out in the support, only the edge stays flush.
Modern spotlight: track, surface-mounted or recessed?
The choice depends on the support and the number of points wanted. A track bar concentrates several sources on a clean line, useful above a worktop or an island; this is the territory of adjustable LED spotlights. Surface mounting suits ceilings you do not want to drill and hallway walls. Recessed is reserved for false ceilings: see the recessed spotlights for living room.
Integrated LED spotlight or GU10 socket: what is the difference?
Integrated LED places the source in the fixture: nothing to replace, and a slimmer profile. The GU10 socket takes a replaceable bulb, which allows changing the colour temperature or wattage later. In the selection, integrated LED is the majority, GU10 frequent, E27 and E14 sockets occasional. To compare the ranges, browse the modern range.
Which modern spotlight to choose for the living room or kitchen?
In the living room as in the kitchen, you want light directed toward a specific use: a worktop, a sofa, a low cabinet or a passage. The selection mainly brings together track spotlights and adjustable projectors in aluminium, black or white, with a few references designed for passage areas.
Which modern spotlight for a living room?
In the living room, you light the living areas rather than the centre of the room. An adjustable projector can be redirected after installation, which allows adjusting once the sofa is in place. The Corvino (black aluminium, LED, 15 W, dimmable) is track-mounted; the Zenilo in silver plastic/metal (GU10, IP20) is recessed. Also see the LED spotlights for living room and the adjustable spotlights in black.
Which spotlight for the kitchen, hallway and entrance?
In the kitchen, light is directed toward the worktop: the Kaelen (black aluminium, integrated LED, 20 W) aligns ten lenses on a track. For a hallway, an entrance or a dressing room, the adjustable surface-mounted spotlight avoids cutting: the Veltro (GU10) is fixed to the ceiling and turned toward the passage. Find the LED spotlights for kitchen and what you need to light a hallway.
| Room | Mounting type | Socket | Protection rating | Dominant colours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Track or multi-projector ceiling light | Integrated LED or GU10 | IP20 | Black, white, silver |
| Kitchen | Linear track and adjustable projectors | Integrated LED or GU10 | IP20 | Black, white |
| Hallway | Adjustable surface-mounted | GU10 | IP44 on suitable references | Black |
| Entrance | Adjustable surface-mounted | GU10 | IP44 on suitable references | Black |
| Dressing room | Adjustable surface-mounted | GU10 | IP44 on suitable references | Black |
How to arrange spotlights on the ceiling?
Spotlights are placed according to what they light, not the ceiling: they are positioned directly above the worktop, the sofa or the circulation area, never behind someone seated. Keep a regular gap between points to avoid light patches.
How to distribute spotlights in a room?
First draw the floor plan with the furniture, then project one point per use: kitchen, table, reading, passage. Keep spotlights away from walls to avoid creating a hard cone on the paint. An adjustable model, such as the adjustable spotlights in white, can be corrected after installation, which leaves room for error.
What distance between two ceiling spotlights?
There is no universal distance: it depends on the ceiling height, the spotlight wattage and the desired effect, uniform wash or accent lighting. The useful method is to set a constant gap, transfer it to the plan, then check the result on the floor before drilling. The recessed LED spotlights in black lend themselves well to a regular grid.
How many spotlights are needed for a 40 m2 room?
There is no single number: everything depends on the surface actually to be lit, the ceiling height and the spotlight wattage. The reliable method is to define the spacing between two points, then transfer it to the plan, rather than starting from an imposed total.
A 40 m2 room is almost never lit entirely: you light the table, the sofa, the low cabinets and the passages, which clearly reduces the number of useful points. A high ceiling requires more wattage per point, a low ceiling less. To adjust without drilling again, dimmable recessed spotlights vary the intensity according to the moment. All the families can be compared from the lighting catalogue.
Warm white or neutral white: which light for a modern spotlight?
Warm white, from 2700 to 3500 K, gives a slightly golden light, comfortable in the evening, suited to the living room, bedroom and dining area. Neutral white, from 3500 to 4500 K, gives a whiter light that brings out materials and contrasts, useful in the kitchen or on a worktop.
Warm white 2700-3500 K: for which rooms?
Warm white remains the most common in this selection. It suits rooms where you stay in the evening: living room, bedroom, dining room. The Velsamica, a track projector in aluminium with a ribbed lens, diffuses this warm white in a small volume. See the spotlights for bedroom.
When to switch to neutral white 3500-4500 K?
Neutral white is justified where you read a colour, a texture or a worktop: kitchen, entrance, workshop. The Aereon, a 60 cm white linear track in 25 W, belongs to this family. Some models accept a dimmer, to be found in the dimmable spotlights and the dimmable LED spotlights.
| Colour temperature | Perceived rendering | Rooms concerned |
|---|---|---|
| Warm white 2700 to 3500 K | Soft light, slightly golden | Living room, bedroom, dining area |
| Neutral white 3500 to 4500 K | Whiter light, sharp contrasts | Kitchen, worktop, entrance |
Black or white modern spotlight: which finish and material to choose?
Black fades into a dark ceiling and emphasises a graphic decor; white blends into a light ceiling and lightens the room. Both coexist well if you keep a single spotlight colour per room and a single metal finish per space.
Black or white spotlight on the ceiling?
Look at the ceiling colour before deciding: a black model on a light ceiling draws a visible line, a white model disappears. The Sileo and Lirra play the disappearing act in white on track, while the spotlights in black embrace the contrast. The white versions exist in most families.
Aluminium, metal or brushed steel: which material?
Aluminium dominates the selection, light and matte; metal brings a cooler tone, brushed steel a satin finish. Plastic appears on structural parts, never as a visible finish. For a room with a single family of materials, compare the metal spotlights and the design spotlights.
How to install and maintain a modern spotlight?
A track or surface-mounted spotlight is installed on an existing power supply on the ceiling or wall; a recessed spotlight requires a cut-out in the support. In a wet room, choose an IP44 model. For maintenance, a soft cloth is enough, without abrasive product on the aluminium.
IP20 or IP44 spotlight: which to choose?
IP20 corresponds to dry rooms, the vast majority of references. IP44 protects against water splashes and concerns wet rooms as well as some entrances. The Noro surface-mounted IP44 (GU10, black, adjustable) covers kitchen, hallway, entrance and dressing room. Find these models in the black LED spotlights.
How to clean an aluminium spotlight?
Switch off the circuit, dust dry with a soft cloth or a feather duster, then wipe the painted parts with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid alcohol, acetone and abrasive sponges, which tarnish aluminium. On an integrated LED, there is no bulb to change: only the dust deposited on the lens reduces the rendering.
Modern chandelier or spotlights: how to light a dining room?
Above a table, a modern chandelier or a pendant concentrates light on the meal and structures the room; spotlights light the rest of the volume and the walls. In a living room, a central point is often combined with adjustable spotlights for reading areas and low cabinets.
Modern chandelier or spotlights above a round table?
On a round table, the central point is placed directly above the top and lights the guests without dazzling them. Spotlights take over on the sides: a wall, a sideboard, a serving table. This distribution avoids lighting the centre of the volume and leaves the meal in a softer light.
How to light a modern dining room?
Keep a single family of finishes between the central point and the spotlights, black and metal or all white, for a coherent chic modern decor. The design LED spotlights then serve as wall or furniture accent rather than general lighting. For the whole house, start from all our lighting families.
To choose between two models, compare three lines of the specification: the socket, the light temperature and the protection rating. The grid shows the current price of each reference, and the order is settled with secure payment and tracked delivery. A doubt about installation or spacing? The Designix customer service answers before purchase, and returns remain possible.
Frequently asked questions about modern spotlights
What are the different types of spotlights?
The track spotlight gathers several adjustable projectors on a bar. The surface-mounted spotlight is fixed to the ceiling or wall, without cutting. The recessed spotlight requires a cut-out and only its edge stays flush. The choice depends on the available support and the orientation sought.
How many spotlights are needed for a 40 m2 room?
No standard total applies: the number depends on the surface actually to be lit, the ceiling height and the spotlight wattage. First determine the spacing between two points, then transfer it to the room plan, zone by zone, before drilling.
What is the average lifespan of an LED spotlight?
It is not fixed: it depends on the quality of the module and the daily lighting time. On models with integrated LED, there is no bulb to replace, which limits maintenance to dusting. The Designix warranty is specified on the dedicated page.
How to integrate spotlights into a chic modern decor?
Keep a single family of finishes per room, ceiling and walls, or black and metal. Adjustable spotlights are used to highlight a wall or a piece of furniture rather than to light everything, with fine lines aligned with those of the room. The light remains directed, never laid as a uniform wash.
What are the brands of modern lighting?
The brands on the market are numerous and their catalogues change often. Rather than the name, compare what appears on the specification: material, socket, light temperature, protection rating, dimensions and warranty. This page brings together the Designix selection, described by these characteristics, which allows comparing models with each other.
