Mount your surface mounted LED spotlights under the ceiling or on a wall, with no cut-out and no false ceiling, and count one point per area to light: above the worktop, along a walkway, facing a wall you want to highlight. The collection brings together metal or plastic housings, with integrated LED or GU10 socket, all rated IP20 and guaranteed for 2 years.

What is a surface mounted spotlight?
A surface mounted LED spotlight is fixed under the ceiling or on a wall, with no recess and no cut-out: the housing stays visible and the light shines downwards or can be aimed. It is fitted during renovation work when you do not want to cut into a false ceiling, with a 220 V supply.
The result is direct: a cone of light falling on the worktop, a housing that becomes a graphic detail on the ceiling, the freedom to aim at a wall or a piece of furniture. The models in this collection are made of metal or plastic, with integrated LED or GU10 socket, with heights from 8.3 to 16 cm. Nothing is recessed, so no cut-out is needed. If you are happy to cut into the ceiling, recessed adjustable spotlights give a flush finish. To see how the families relate to each other, look at our full range of lighting.
Adjustable surface mounted LED spotlight: what is it for?
Aiming means bringing the cone of light where it works: a chopping board, a worktop, a shelf, a picture. A two-head plate, such as the Neressa two-head adjustable spotlight, lights two areas from a single fixing point. The adjustable LED spotlights family gathers these models with a movable head.
Surface mounted LED light: ceiling fixing or wall fixing?
On the ceiling, the spotlight lights an area of floor or a piece of furniture. On the wall, as a wall light, it lights a vertical surface: a mirror, a panel, a walkway. In both cases the plate stays visible, so it should be chosen for its design as much as for its light. The Marvesora adjustable cylinder is mounted on the ceiling and pivots towards the area to be lit.
Surface mounted LED spotlight, LED ceiling light or LED wall light: how to choose?
A surface mounted spotlight concentrates light on one area and can be aimed; an LED ceiling light spreads light widely from the centre of the room; an LED wall light lights a wall or a vertical surface. Many rooms combine all three, with the spotlight used as additional or accent lighting.
The first criterion is the surface to cover: a whole room calls for a ceiling light, a precise area calls for a spotlight. The second is direction, because a fixed ceiling light cannot be corrected after fitting while a spotlight can be adjusted by hand. The third is the number of light points needed.
LED living room ceiling light: how do you complete it with surface mounted spotlights?
When the centre of the room is already lit, two or three surface mounted spotlights pull the corners out of the shadow: one towards the bookcase, one towards the back wall, one towards the reading corner. No ceiling work, just a supply line to run. Everything is detailed in the living room lighting guide.
LED chandelier and LED wall light: when are they the better choice?
The chandelier and the wall light take the decorative role: ambient light in the centre, grazing light on a wall. The spotlights in this collection sit alongside them on the same circuit, provided you keep a single warm white tone from one light to the next. To adjust brightness by time of day, look at the dimmable spotlights.
Which rooms should surface mounted LED spotlights go in?
Surface mounted spotlights suit the living room, kitchen, hallway, entrance and dressing room: these are the rooms listed for all the models in the collection. They light a worktop, a walkway, a mirror or a section of wall with no ceiling work.
The living room comes top of the recorded uses, closely followed by the kitchen, hallway, entrance and dressing room. A surface mounted spotlight is therefore rarely chosen for one particular room: it is chosen for an area. Kitchen lighting and bedroom lighting do not call for the same settings.
| Model | Format | Socket | Recorded wattage | Colour | Room and use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Neressa | Two-head adjustable plate | Integrated LED | 2 x 8 W | Black | Kitchen, hallway, entrance, dressing room |
| Lortorena | Plate with two adjustable projectors | Integrated LED | 2 x 8 W | Black and brushed bronze | Living room, hallway, entrance |
| Oritoraro | Single adjustable head | Integrated LED | 8 W | Black and brushed bronze | Hallway, entrance, dressing room |
| Umbrara | Bar of three adjustable spotlights | GU10 | 10 W | Silver | Kitchen, hallway, living room |
| Dashiell | Adjustable bar of three lights | GU10 | 3 x 5 W max | Eight colours | Kitchen, hallway, living room |
| Marvesora | Adjustable cylinder mounted on the ceiling | GU10 | 1 x 5 W max | Eight colours | Hallway, entrance, dressing room |
Kitchen and worktop: which light above the counter?
In the kitchen, the spotlight aims at the worktop, never at the sink from the front: a source placed in your line of sight casts your shadow on what you are cutting. Move the housing towards the front of the counter. Modern kitchen spotlights are fixed under the ceiling without getting in the way of wall units.
Hallway, entrance and dressing room: lighting the walkway areas
In a hallway, a double plate or a bar covers a line from a single fixing point, simpler than a series of separate heads. Place the spotlights before the doors rather than directly above them. For vertical circulation, see how to light a staircase.
Which socket and which wattage for a surface mounted LED spotlight?
Two families coexist in the collection: spotlights with integrated LED, at 2 x 8 W or 8 W, and spotlights with a GU10 socket, at 10 W, 3 x 5 W max or 1 x 5 W max. The GU10 socket lets you change the bulb, while integrated LED keeps a slimmer housing.
What that changes day to day: with a GU10 socket, you choose the bulb and can switch from one tone to another without changing the light. With integrated LED, everything is supplied and the tone stays the same throughout the room. LED spotlights with a crafted design exist in both technologies.
| Criterion | Integrated LED spotlight | GU10 socket spotlight |
|---|---|---|
| Light source | LED supplied with the light | GU10 bulb to be supplied separately |
| Recorded wattages | 2 x 8 W; 8 W | 10 W; 3 x 5 W max; 1 x 5 W max |
| Models concerned | Neressa, Sertorano, Zentoristo, Lortorena, Oritoraro, Ceylo | Umbrara, Dashiell, Marvesora |
| Changing the tone | By changing the light | By changing the GU10 bulb |
| Protection rating | IP20 | IP20 |
| Warranty | 2 years | 2 years |
220 V surface mounted LED spotlight: do you need a transformer?
No: these spotlights connect directly to the room's lighting circuit, with no low-voltage supply. You do not touch the consumer unit and the existing switch is enough. The connection itself is a job for an electrician if you are not comfortable with the terminal block supplied.
Warm white 2700-3500 K: what atmosphere in the room?
Warm white gives light close to a filament bulb: restful at the end of the day, suited to the living room, bedroom and hallways. This tone is recorded on only some of the models, including the Ceylo with faceted reflector. If you mix sources, keep the same colour temperature from one spotlight to the next.
Extra flat, tube or bar surface mounted LED spotlight: which format to choose?
The format depends on the space available and the surface to cover: a single head or a double plate stays the most discreet, a vertical tube marks the line, a bar of three spotlights covers a long area from a single fixing point. Recorded heights range from 8.3 to 16 cm.
Three criteria decide: what the housing lets you see under the ceiling, the number of areas to light, the colour of the housing. The colours actually offered are black, white, silver, brushed bronze, plus the multi-colour series of the Dashiell and Marvesora bars. Metal spotlights show a more matte finish than plastic.
Black or white surface mounted LED spotlight: what effect on the ceiling?
On a light ceiling, a white version goes unnoticed, which suits rooms where the light should not draw the eye. A black housing marks the line and matches dark joinery: see the black models.
One, two or three light heads: how should the light be distributed?
One head for a precise area, a double plate for two points close together, a bar for a continuous line along a worktop or a hallway. The Dashiell three-light bar covers a long area from a single fixing point. For a contemporary line, the Sertorano contemporary tube sends light straight down beneath it.
How do you install a surface mounted LED spotlight on the ceiling?
Switch off the power, locate the cable run, fix the spotlight plate to the surface then connect the supply before clipping the housing on. Since nothing is recessed, there is no ceiling cut-out and no recess to plan, which makes fitting possible during renovation work.
Locating the fixing points and the cable run
Align the spotlights on the same line before drilling: a gap of a few centimetres shows on the ceiling. Locate the cable entry before the first hole and check that no joist falls under the plate. If you prefer a flush finish, compare with the white recessed spotlights before fixing.
Connecting the lighting circuit to standard
The models connect to the room's 220 V supply, at the terminal block or connector supplied. Identify live and neutral, and entrust the connection to an electrician if the circuit is old. To browse the families and finishes available, the Designix lighting collection gathers the essentials.
Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service: everything you need to order the right reference without hesitation. One point to check before confirming, the height of the housing under the ceiling, between 8.3 and 16 cm depending on the model.
Can a surface mounted LED spotlight be installed outdoors?
No: all the surface mounted spotlights in this collection are rated IP20, a rating that corresponds to indoor use, protected from water spray. For a terrace, a facade or a garden, you need a collection designed for outdoor use, with a suitable protection rating.
IP20 protects against solid objects, not against rain or jets. A covered terrace is still an area exposed to damp: turn to outdoor LED spotlights, or to the white outdoor models if your facade is light.
Which mistakes should you avoid with surface mounted LED spotlights?
The most common mistakes: adding more points than needed, aiming a spotlight at a white wall and creating glare, choosing a GU10 socket without checking the bulb, or using an IP20 model in a room exposed to water. Fewer, well-aimed spotlights are better.
Another trap: changing tone partway along a line. Two white temperatures side by side are immediately noticeable on a plain ceiling.
Aiming without glare and balancing the light points
Aim at a worktop or a side wall rather than a light surface facing the eye. Two well-adjusted spotlights do better than five badly aimed ones, and indirect light is less tiring in the evening. Adjustable models can be set after fitting, once the room is furnished.
Care and warranty: what is covered
A soft cloth is enough: dust settles on the housing, never inside. The whole selection is guaranteed for 2 years. If you are unsure about a reference, Designix customer service answers before you buy.
Choose the finish and the number of heads according to the area to light, then confirm your basket: tracked delivery, possible returns and secure payment. The full catalogue can be browsed in the designer spotlights.
Frequently asked questions about surface mounted LED spotlights
What is a surface mounted spotlight?
A light fixed under the ceiling or on a wall, whose housing stays visible: nothing is recessed and no cut-out is needed. It lights a precise area and can be aimed. In this collection, the models are LED, rated IP20, for indoor use.
Is it better to wire spotlights in series or in parallel?
In parallel: each spotlight stays independently powered, keeps the same brightness and continues to work if another fails. In series, the voltage is shared between the lights, the lighting weakens and one break switches off the whole line. This connection is a job for an electrician.
Can a surface mounted LED spotlight replace an LED ceiling light in a living room?
Yes, provided it aims at an area rather than a whole room: a ceiling light lights widely, whereas a spotlight such as the Neressa two-head adjustable concentrates light on a worktop, a wall or a reading corner. Many living rooms combine the two.
220 V surface mounted LED spotlight: do you need a transformer?
The spotlight connects directly to the room's lighting circuit, with no low-voltage supply. On GU10 socket models, the bulb you choose determines the light temperature; on integrated LED models, the electronics sit inside the housing.
What is the difference between a surface mounted spotlight and an LED wall light?
A surface mounted spotlight is fixed to the ceiling or as a wall light and directs the light; a wall light mainly lights the wall it is mounted on, with grazing light. In a living room, the wall light highlights a section of wall, the spotlight lights a useful area. Both can coexist on the same circuit.
