Start by choosing the room and the effect you want: a plain black ceiling with no visible fixture, whether in a living room or a hallway. The rest comes down to three criteria: the diameter of the downlight, the GU10 base or integrated LED, and the protection rating suited to the area.
- Which black downlight for which room
- How to arrange the downlights
- GU10 base or integrated LED
- IP20, IP44 or IP65
- Diameter and shape
- Warm white or neutral white
- Dimmer compatibility
- Downlight, chandelier or wall light
Which black recessed downlight should you choose for each room?
A black recessed downlight fades into the ceiling and lets the light do the work on its own. The selection comes in round models, square models and adjustable double-head versions, mostly in aluminium. The choice comes down to diameter, base and protection rating.
Black recessed downlight for the living room
In a living room, you want a continuous ceiling and soft light. The Luno, round with a 9.8 cm diameter, emits 12 W behind a ribbed diffuser, while the Kalynda, round at 12 cm, adjustable with a gold reflector, can be aimed at a wall or a bookcase. For a geometric grid, the Novello square with two adjustable cylinders lights two directions from a single point. These formats also appear in the solutions designed for the living room.
Black recessed downlight for the hallway
In a hallway, smaller diameters take over: the Mirane at 4 cm in 5 W sits in a line without crowding the ceiling, alongside the Ombrio at 5.2 cm, adjustable with a trim ring, and the Vestra with its gold cylindrical projector, both in GU10. A regular alignment is enough to guide the eye. See also the adjustable models in black.
How should downlights be arranged on the ceiling?
Arrange downlights on the ceiling by spreading them evenly over one or more rows, with the same spacing between each point and aligned axes. Adjustable models are then aimed at walls or the areas to be lit. The layout is decided before drilling, not after.
Black recessed downlights: how should they be spread across the ceiling?
Start from the areas to be lit rather than the whole ceiling: a worktop, a piece of furniture, a walkway. Draw axes parallel to the wall, keep a constant spacing from one point to the next, then check the alignment from the floor, where people actually walk. A single row suits a hallway, two parallel rows suit a living room. The number of points is set by the surface to be covered, not by the symmetry of the ceiling.
How do you aim downlights to light a wall or a worktop?
Reserve adjustable models for this purpose. The Ombrio and the Vestra are adjusted by hand thanks to their trim ring, the Nemio square tilts towards the wall, and the Velsamissa double head lights two directions at once. Fixed versions keep their beam pointing down: useful for general lighting, unsuitable for highlighting a wall. Find these references in the adjustable recessed downlights.
GU10 base or integrated LED: what is the difference for a black recessed downlight?
GU10 is a socket: the bulb can be replaced and the light tone can be changed. Integrated LED is a module sealed into the downlight, with a temperature fixed at manufacture, in warm white or neutral white depending on the model. Both formats coexist in the selection.
Black downlight with a GU10 socket: what it changes day to day
With a GU10, you stay in control: when a bulb wears out, you replace it, and you can switch from one tone to another without removing the downlight. The Temis with a gold reflector, the Zarel, the Rovea with an opal diffuser and the Nerio II with a textured trim ring all work on this principle, all at 10 W.
Black downlight with integrated LED: what it changes
Integrated LED removes the question of the bulb: the module is built to last, the tone is chosen when you order and no longer changes. That is the case for the Ondor, the Velkor, the Luno and the Encastro, set to warm white or neutral white depending on the reference. The flatter GX53 format is also available in the selection.
| Base | What it implies | Light temperature | Example models |
|---|---|---|---|
| GU10 | replaceable socket, the tone can be changed without changing the downlight | depends on the GU10 bulb installed | Ombrio, Vestra, Nerio II, Temis, Zarel, Rovea, Nemio, Velsamissa |
| Integrated LED | module fixed inside the downlight, not separately replaceable | warm white 2700 to 3500 K or neutral white 3500 to 4500 K | Ondor, Velkor, Luno, Encastro, Lorsamara, Mirane, Novello, Kalynda |
| GX53 | flat module format | depends on the GX53 module | check on the product page |
IP20, IP44 or IP65: which protection rating should you choose?
The protection rating indicates where the downlight can be installed. IP20 suits ceilings in dry rooms, living rooms and hallways. IP44 and IP65 are intended for areas where splashes of water or dust are possible. Around nine out of ten references in this selection are IP20.
Which protection rating for a bathroom or a damp room?
In a damp room, aim for IP44 at minimum. The Kalynda is rated IP44, with its adjustable trim ring and gold reflector; the Ondor and the Velkor go up to IP65, with a ribbed lens and a 6 W LED module. These three references stay within the family of black recessed LED downlights, with a black finish that holds up on a painted ceiling.
Which rating for a living room or a hallway?
In a dry room, IP20 is enough: that is the case for the Temis, Zarel, Rovea, Nerio II, Luno, Encastro, Lorsamara, Mirane, Nemio, Novello and Velsamissa. The rating protects against dust and splashes, not against shower steam. For a wet room, therefore, choose an IP44 or IP65 model rather than an IP20 installed near a water source.
What diameter and shape for a black recessed downlight?
Round models range from the smallest diameter to large rounds, squares follow a geometric grid and double heads light two areas at once. The diameter is chosen according to the surface to be covered and the number of points planned for the ceiling.
Black recessed downlight: round or square?
Round gives a uniform ceiling with no marked direction: Mirane at 4 cm, Ombrio and Vestra at 5.2 cm, Lorsamara at 6 cm, Temis at 6.8 cm, Nerio II at 8.5 cm, Luno at 9.8 cm, Kalynda at 12 cm. Square fits a grid of ceiling panels or a ceiling with straight lines: the Nemio at 12.6 cm, adjustable in GU10, and the Novello at 11.2 cm. For more ideas, see the recessed downlights with distinctive designs.
Single downlight or adjustable double head?
A single head lights one area, a worktop or a wall. The Velsamissa, a double head 24.5 cm long, covers two directions from a single recess, which reduces the number of points on the ceiling. This format suits a wide hallway or a room where you want to light two opposite walls. The adjustable versions with integrated LED complete the family.
| Format | Dimensions | Base | Power | Protection rating | Key point |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round | Ø 4 cm | Integrated LED | 5 W | IP20 | gold reflector, white trim ring |
| Round | Ø 5.2 cm | GU10 | 10 W | IP20 | adjustable with trim ring, or gold cylindrical projector |
| Round | Ø 6 cm | Integrated LED | 6 W | IP65 | ribbed lens, dimmer compatible |
| Round | Ø 6.8 cm | GU10 | 10 W | IP20 | gold reflector or opal diffuser depending on the model |
| Round | Ø 9.8 cm | Integrated LED | 12 W | IP20 | ribbed diffuser |
| Round | Ø 12 cm | Integrated LED | 12 W | IP44 | adjustable with gold reflector, dimmer compatible |
Warm white or neutral white: which light for a black recessed downlight?
Warm white, around 2700 to 3500 K, gives light close to halogen and suits living spaces. Neutral white, from 3500 to 4500 K, makes colours look sharper. On GU10 models, the tone depends on the bulb chosen; on integrated LEDs, it is fixed in advance.
Warm white 2700 to 3500 K: for which use?
This is the tone for rooms where you settle in: living room, bedroom, hallway. It warms up a black ceiling, which absorbs a lot of light, and is easier on the eyes at the end of the day. In this selection, the Encastro, the Lorsamara, the Mirane, the Novello and the Kalynda are rated warm white. The Velkor, rated IP65, follows the same tone for a damp room.
Neutral white 3500 to 4500 K: for which use?
Neutral white gives a whiter light that shows materials and colours in more detail. It is best kept for work areas, a kitchen worktop or an entrance hallway. The Luno and the Ondor are rated within this range. Mixing the two tones on the same ceiling creates a visible break: it is better to choose a single family and stick to it.
Black recessed downlights on a dimmer: what should you check?
A minority of models in the collection are rated dimmer compatible. For the others, dimming depends on the type of bulb and the module installed. Check the note on the product page before connecting the downlight to a wall control, and test the result before closing up the ceiling.
Which models are rated dimmer compatible?
The Ondor, the Velkor and the Kalynda are among the references rated compatible. These are integrated LED models, which simplifies adjustment: the module and the dimmer are designed to work together. Find them in the recessed LED downlights with dimmer. For the rest of the selection, compatibility is not guaranteed by the product page.
How do you connect a black downlight to a wall control?
On a downlight with a GU10 socket, dimming depends entirely on the bulb installed: a non-dimmable bulb will buzz or cut out in steps, even behind a correct dimmer. On an LED module, the downlight's product page is what counts. Group the downlights of the same room on a single circuit and keep a simple switch for areas that do not need to be adjusted. See how it works with a dimmer for details of each case.
Black recessed downlight, chandelier or wall light: how do you choose your lighting family?
A black recessed downlight lights a ceiling continuously, while a chandelier or a black wall light adds a visible point of light. This collection contains only black recessed downlights: the other families can be found elsewhere in our full range of lighting.
Black industrial chandelier or recessed downlights?
A chandelier hangs down into the room, is visible and becomes a decorative feature: it suits a living room with height, above a table. A recessed downlight, by contrast, frees up the ceiling and spreads across the whole surface. Many interiors combine the two, a chandelier in the centre and downlights around the edge, provided you choose the same tone family to avoid a clash of whites. The Designix catalogue covers our lighting catalogue as a whole.
Black wall light or black recessed downlight?
A wall light is fixed to the wall and stays visible: it dresses an entrance, a landing, a living room wall. A recessed downlight, by contrast, lights downwards from the ceiling and cannot be seen. If you want to light a circulation area without touching the ceiling, the wall light has the advantage; if you want an even wash of light, the downlight remains the solution. Similar finishes can be found in the gold finishes and the white version of the recessed range.
Frequently asked questions
Black recessed downlights: what is the difference from the white version?
Black is less noticeable on a dark painted ceiling and stands out more clearly on a light ceiling. Both versions share the same formats, bases and protection ratings: the colour changes the look, not the way it lights. The white version suits a very light ceiling that you want to make disappear.
How do you choose a black chandelier for the living room?
This collection brings together only black recessed downlights. A black chandelier is chosen based on the height of the room and the diameter of its fixing point, not the diameter of the ceiling. For this type of hanging model, look in the lighting family, which groups pendants and ceiling lights.
Where can you find a wood and black wall light?
Wall lights are not part of this collection, which gathers only black recessed downlights. A wood and black wall light is found in the family of wall-mounted lighting, fixed to the wall and visible from a distance. The recessed downlight remains the solution for grazing light from the ceiling.
How do you choose an industrial black wall light?
An industrial black wall light is fixed to the wall and stays visible, whereas a black recessed downlight disappears into the ceiling. If you want to dress a wall rather than light a ceiling continuously, go for wall-mounted models. For a ceiling, stick with recessed downlights and all black downlights.
What if I am looking for a black metal console table?
A black metal console table is a piece of furniture, not a light: it does not belong in this collection of black recessed downlights. The Designix catalogue covers lighting, with fixtures, downlights and wall lights. For outdoors, black outdoor downlights take over.
