At what height should the light be installed?
Above a table: 70-85 cm from the tabletop; in a walkway: at least 2.10 m of clearance below the bulb.
What type of bulb?
Usually E27 or E14, sometimes GU10. Specified on each product page.
Compatible with LEDs and dimmers?
Yes, in most cases; for use with a dimmer, look for the “dimmable” mention.

Surface mounted spotlights fix directly onto the finished ceiling or wall: the body stays visible and the bulb can be replaced without dismantling the fixture. Plan one head per useful zone (worktop, hallway, passage), set back from the walls to avoid cast shadows.

What is a surface mounted spotlight?

A surface mounted spotlight is fixed onto the finished ceiling or wall: the body and the head stay visible in the room, unlike a recessed spotlight that disappears into a void. It goes up without cutting a housing and the bulb stays accessible. It is the answer for rooms that already have a painted ceiling, concrete or panelling, and that cannot lose any height. In the selection, that ranges from a small ceiling unit such as the Siltorissa spotlight to a double spotlight on a bar.

What is a surface mounted installation?

A surface mounted installation means the fixture is screwed onto the finished surface, fully visible, with no recess and no void. In practice, the plate or bracket is fixed straight to the support, then the power supply is connected from the back or the side depending on the model. Nothing to cut into the ceiling, and nothing to redo if you change your mind later. If you do have a technical void, compare with the recessed option if you have a void.

What does surface mounted mean?

Surface mounted describes an element that stands out from a flat surface. Here, the spotlight protrudes from the ceiling or the wall instead of being sunk into it. The term is used the same way for a switch or a box mounted on the surface. It changes two things in use: the silhouette of the fixture becomes part of the decor, and the clearance under the fixture becomes a constraint to check before choosing a tall model.

How should you lay out ceiling spotlights?

Spread the points according to the zones to be lit rather than in a systematic line: a regular rhythm along a hallway or a worktop, keeping a setback from the walls to avoid cast shadows. On an adjustable model, then tilt the head towards the useful zone. A living room is generally handled with three to four sources, a passage with a line of two to four points depending on its length.

Ceiling surface mounted spotlights: align or spread?

In a hallway, alignment on the walking axis gives clear guidance; the rhythm must stay even from one point to the next. In a kitchen, align the heads along the length of the worktop, not the whole room. In a living room, spread rather than align: two points on the perimeter and one adjustable towards the wall avoid the waiting-room effect produced by a centred line of spotlights.

Extra flat surface mounted spotlights: when does visible height matter?

Under a door, above a shelf or in a low hallway, a compact model is less noticeable. The Mirtorena spotlight measures 11 cm and the Siltorissa 11 cm by 11.5 cm. The Ceylo goes lower still, at 8.3 cm high for 7.8 cm in diameter, for a discreet silhouette. A surface mounted switch is fixed on the surface, with no recess: it simplifies renovating a wall that is already finished.

Which surface mounted spotlight for a living room, kitchen or hallway?

The choice depends on the zone to be lit: in a living room, an adjustable head spotlight highlights a wall or a bookcase; in a kitchen, two heads aimed at the worktop stop you working in your own shadow; in a hallway, a regular rhythm guides the way through. The table below sums up the markers per room, the common base and the finish that blends in best.

Which surface mounted spotlight for which room
Room What you look for Common base Protection Finish that blends in
Living room Highlighting, adjustable heads E27 or GU10 IP20 Black, silver or smoked glass
Kitchen Light aimed at the worktop GU10 IP20 Black or white
Hallway and entrance Regular rhythm, low light without a false ceiling GU10 or E14 IP20 Black, taupe
Dressing room Targeted lighting of access zones GU10 IP20 White or black
Bathroom Moisture resistance near the water point GU10 IP44 White and silver
Bedroom Soft, discreet light E27 IP20 Black, cream

Surface mounted spotlights for the living room

A living room rarely settles for a single central ceiling light. Living room lighting with LED spotlights benefits from mixing two moods: a broad, diffuse point, plus an adjustable one aimed at a wall, a shelf or a picture. The Ceylo and its faceted reflector plays that projector role, while the Trefolo and its three smoked glass heads draw a decorative line. To vary the intensity according to the moment, also look at spotlights compatible with a dimmer.

Kitchen, hallway and entrance: which light

In a kitchen, the light must fall in front of you, not behind you. The Neressa and its two adjustable heads, or the Aveno on its bar, are fixed above the worktop. To go further on this room, see lighting a kitchen worktop. In a hallway, spotlights designed for a hallway often favour the GU10 base and a dark shade that reads well on the ceiling.

Adjustable surface mounted spotlights: how do you aim the light?

An adjustable spotlight is set before final fixing: the head is tilted towards the useful zone, a worktop, a picture or an entrance, rather than towards a bare wall. Two-head models cover two distinct zones from a single plate or bar. Adjustment is done with the fixture mounted but switched off, checking that the head does not bump into a wall unit or a shelf.

Adjustable surface mounted spotlights: setting the head

Aim at a surface that serves you: worktop, splashback, basin, or a wall of pictures at eye level. Avoid pointing the beam at a bright, shiny surface at eye height, glare is paid for on every trip past. In our selection of adjustable spotlights, cylindrical heads offer the widest travel. Fans of matte black will find specialists in black adjustable spotlights.

One light point or several heads?

A single head is enough for a precise point, a reading corner or an entrance. Two heads on a plate, such as the Sermilina, cover a wider zone with a single drilling. The Velmore combines a black body with silver heads and an E27 base, handy if you want to change the bulb easily.

Black or white surface mounted spotlights: which finish should you choose?

The finish is chosen in relation to the support: a black spotlight stands out on a white ceiling and underlines the line of the fixture, while a white or silver one blends into the surface. Taupe and cream match light woods and warm interiors better. It is not a detail: on a visible fixture, colour weighs as much as shape.

Black surface mounted spotlights

Black is the most common shade in this product family, very often in metal. It structures a white ceiling, matches dark kitchens and anthracite joinery. Find black spotlights to mount on the ceiling, or a more targeted selection among black LED models.

White surface mounted spotlights and light tones

On a ceiling painted white, a white or silver fixture almost disappears. It is the choice for rooms where the light should not catch the eye, bedrooms and dressing rooms in particular. The Aquaro in white and silver tube is the clearest example. Also see the white versions of the spotlights, and for soft interiors, a soft light for the bedroom.

Which base should you choose between GU10, E27, E14 and integrated LED?

The base determines the bulb you can fit: GU10 for a directed, interchangeable beam, E27 for a standard screw bulb or a shade, E14 for small glass formats, integrated LED for lighting supplied as standard with no bulb to add. The base does not depend on the room, but on the fixture you choose.

Bases available in the collection
Base Bulb What it changes Suited to Direction
GU10 Pin bulb, directed beam Bulb easy to replace, concentrated light Kitchen, hallway, bathroom Often adjustable
E27 Standard screw bulb Large format, option of a shade Living room, bedroom, entrance Fixed or adjustable
E14 Small screw base Slim heads, glass silhouettes Hallway, kitchen, entrance Generally fixed
Integrated LED Module supplied as standard No bulb to buy on top Living room, hallway, dressing room Adjustable head

GU10 or E27: which to choose?

The GU10 sends a concentrated light, ideal above a worktop or in a passage, with a bulb replaced in seconds. The E27 takes a wider screw bulb and allows a shade, which softens the light. Wood and taupe spotlights with cup heads such as the Dravia or the Liorin use this base.

Integrated LED: what it involves

The LED module comes with the fixture: nothing to choose on the bulb side, and a warm white light already calibrated. In return, replacement applies to the whole light rather than a single bulb. The Neressa and the Ceylo work this way. For this type of design, browse LED spotlights with a crafted design.

Surface mounted spotlights in a bathroom: what does the IP rating change?

The IP rating indicates resistance to water and dust: IP20 corresponds to dry rooms, IP44 to the wet zone. In this collection, only some of the fixtures are rated IP44, such as the white and silver Aquaro tube spotlight or the adjustable black cylindrical Noro. Check this marker before any other aesthetic criterion.

IP20 or IP44: how do you tell them apart?

The first digit concerns solid bodies, the second water splashes. An IP20 suits a living room, hallway, bedroom or kitchen, outside the splash zone. An IP44 withstands splashes, which destines it to the wet zone. Most fixtures in this family are IP20; IP44 concerns the models designed for the bathroom.

Where to place the spotlight in the wet zone

Keep a reasonable distance from the nearest water point, bath, shower or basin, and aim the head towards the basin area rather than the mirror, which sends the light back into your eyes. Two fixtures either side of the mirror give a more flattering light than a single point on the ceiling.

How do you install and maintain a surface mounted spotlight?

Installation means marking the plate on the support, drilling, connecting, fixing, then setting the direction before screwing in the bulb of the right base. Maintenance is limited to dry dusting, with the fixture switched off and cooled, with no abrasive product on the glass or the wood. The two-year warranty covers every fixture in the collection.

Ceiling or wall mounting

The same fixture is fixed to the ceiling or against the wall depending on the effect you want. On the ceiling, it lights widely; on the wall, it highlights a wall, a headboard or an entrance. Cut the power at the breaker before connecting, identify live and neutral, and tighten the plate onto a sound support. On a fragile or hollow wall, adapt the fixings to the material.

Bulb, cleaning and warranty

Fit a bulb of the intended base, never another format, and let the fixture cool before any handling. For cleaning, a soft dry cloth is enough on metal, plastic and steel; on glass and wood, no product, just dusting. The two-year warranty applies to one hundred percent of the references in the collection.

Delivery, returns and secure payment

Designix customer service helps with the choice of base, finish and layout before ordering, to avoid the wrong model on a visible fixture. Compare for instance spotlights dressed in metal and the most decorative pieces before confirming. For large volumes, other formats exist, such as COB spotlights, linear models and lights with adjustable colour temperature (CCT).

Hesitating between two models? First note the room, then the height available under the fixture, then the base. Once those three points are set, few candidates remain: browse our selection of adjustable spotlights, or go back up to all the lights in the house and the full lighting catalogue to place these spotlights among the rest of the interior lighting.

Frequently asked questions about surface mounted spotlights

What is a surface mounted installation?

A surface mounted installation means the fixture is screwed onto the finished surface, fully visible, with no recess and no void. The plate or bracket is fixed straight to the ceiling or the wall, then the power supply is connected. Nothing to cut, and nothing to redo if you change your mind.

What does surface mounted mean?

Surface mounted describes an element that stands out from a flat surface. Here, a spotlight whose body protrudes from the ceiling or the wall instead of being sunk into it. The term is also used for a switch or a box mounted on the surface and visible once installed.

Which surface mounted spotlight for a bathroom?

Look for the IP44 rating, that of the wet zone models in the collection, such as the white and silver Aquaro tube spotlight or the adjustable black cylindrical Noro. Check this marker before choosing, then aim the head towards the basin area rather than the mirror.

Can you install a surface mounted spotlight in a hallway or a dressing room?

Yes, these rooms are among the most common uses of the selection, along with the kitchen and the living room. The spotlight replaces a false ceiling: fixed in a line along the passage, it lights the floor without using up height, with a GU10 or E14 base depending on the model. See spotlights designed for a hallway.

Can an adjustable surface mounted spotlight light several zones?

Yes, within the limits of its travel: a cylindrical head directs the beam towards a worktop, a picture or an entrance. Two-head models, such as the Aveno bar or the Neressa, cover two distinct zones from a single fixing.
