Plan for two wall lights framing the mirror, a diffuser ceiling light for general illumination and an adjustable spot above the shower. In a bathroom, the zone to be lit dictates the type of fixture first, before the IP rating, the socket and the material.

Which IP44 bathroom lights should you choose?
Start from the zone, not the style. The mirror and the vanity top call for side lighting, the shower a directed and sturdy spot, the centre of the room diffused lighting. The collection then reads by families: linear wall lights with a ribbed diffuser such as Caldanara, ball wall lights such as Ivlino or Sakura, round ceiling lights such as Rondella, globe ceiling lights such as Nerlinina.
These families sit alongside IP20 models in the design bathroom lights range: those stay in dry zones. The rule fits in one sentence: if water can spray onto it, it needs at least an IP44.
IP44 ceiling light for the bathroom: what is it for?
The ceiling light handles general illumination: entering, moving around, cleaning. The Rondella ceiling light and its ivory diffuser lights evenly from a central fixing point, with a brushed metal ring and 18 W. The Nerlinina three-globe ceiling light, rated IP44, adds a decorative presence above a double vanity unit.
What sets IP44 bathroom lights apart from IP20 or IP65 models
The rating appears as two digits on the label. IP20 protects against dust and fingers, IP44 and IP45 against water splashes, IP65 against jets. Under an open shower or near a heavily exposed bathtub, you therefore step up to IP65 models for highly exposed zones.
Is the IP44 standard mandatory for bathroom lighting?
The requirement does not cover the whole room: it concentrates around the bathtub, the shower and the vanity top, where water sprays and condensation settles. In those volumes, a fixture resistant to splashes, so at least IP44, is expected. The precise zoning is confirmed at installation with the electrician, who measures the actual distance between the light point and the water.
The bathroom zones that require an IP44
Around the mirror and the vanity top, water splashes during washing. Above the shower and the bathtub, splashes rise towards the ceiling. In the centre of the room, an IP44 ceiling light remains the safe choice. Conversely, in a dry corner far from any water point, an IP20 model is enough, as in several rooms covered in toilet lighting.
Water splashes or immersion: what the rating says
The first digit covers solid objects, the second water. An IP44 protects against solid objects over 1 mm and water splashes from all directions. An IP65 adds dust and water jets. Neither handles immersion: that is a different use, not to be confused.
Is the IP44 protection rating waterproof?
No. An IP44 resists solid objects over 1 mm and water splashes from all directions, but it is not waterproof: it does not withstand immersion. An IP44 wall light above a washbasin is suitable; the same fixture hosed down or submerged in a tub is not.
| Rating | Resists | Does not resist | Where to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| IP20 | Dust and finger contact | Water splashes, condensation | Bedroom, living room, hallway, dry zone |
| IP44 | Solid objects over 1 mm and water splashes | Immersion | Bathroom, around the mirror, WC |
| IP45 | Water splashes under low pressure | Immersion | Bathroom, sheltered terrace |
| IP65 | Dust and water jets | Prolonged immersion | Heavily sprayed zones, poolside |
What an IP44 withstands in the bathroom
Splashes from washing, condensation from a hot shower, the swipe of a damp sponge: that is what an IP44 takes on a daily basis. That is what makes it useful in front of a vanity top and above a bathtub.
IP44, IP45, IP65: reading the difference on the label
The second digit indicates water protection: 4 for splashes, 5 for jets. The first indicates mechanical protection. Two very similar references can therefore differ by a single digit, the one that decides their place in the room.
Which IP44 bathroom lights for each bathroom zone?
The right model depends first on the zone. The mirror wants two side sources to avoid shadows under the eyes. The shower wants a directed and compact spot. The rest of the room wants general, soft light.
| Zone to light | Fixture type | Rating to aim for | Socket available | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Around the mirror and vanity top | Linear or ball wall light, on either side | IP44 | Integrated LED, G9 | Caldanara wall light, Ivlino wall light |
| Ceiling, general light | Round ceiling light with diffuser or globes | IP44 | Integrated LED, G9 | Rondella ceiling light, Nerlinina ceiling light |
| Shower and above the bathtub | Slim-arm wall light or adjustable head | IP44 to IP45 | Integrated LED | Delvino wall light, Avellane wall light |
| Dry zone, far from water | Ceiling light, pendant or decorative wall light | IP20 possible | G9, E27 | Iolana pendant, Miyabi wall light |
IP44 wall lights around the mirror and vanity top
Two wall lights of the same model, placed at face height, give an even complexion with no cast shadow. The Ivlino wall light in gold-tone metal, with its opal sphere and square backplate, fits within 16 cm of width. The Sakura ball wall light, Japanese-inspired, measures 26.5 cm high and accepts a dimmer.
IP44 spots and adjustable wall lights in the shower
Above the shower, look for a compact model that directs light downwards. The black Delvino wall light with adjustable head extends a slim 900 mm arm for 13 W. On a narrow mirror, a discreet bar such as the chrome Chromius wall light takes up less space than a wide model. For a recessed ceiling, see also recessed spots and lights.
What light colour and power for IP44 bathroom lights?
Warm white, between 2700 and 3500 K, gives a rendering close to household lighting and suits both the mirror and general light. Cool white, between 4500 and 6500 K, lights whiter and is mainly used in work areas. Available powers range from 7 to 20 W.
Warm white or cool white in front of the mirror?
In front of a mirror, warm white flatters the complexion without turning yellow and remains the common choice for a relaxing room. Cool white makes colours sharper and suits a heavily used vanity top. Some models offer both temperatures, to be decided by use.
Powers from 7 to 20 W and dimming: what it changes
Power alone does not say everything: a well-diffused 12 W wall light lights better than a stronger, poorly aimed spot. Around a quarter of the models accept a dimmer, handy for moving from soft light in the morning to bright light for cleaning. Compatibility should be checked before purchase.
Sockets, materials and warranties: how to compare two IP44 bathroom lights?
Two seemingly identical fixtures differ by their socket, and therefore by the possibility of replacing the bulb, then by material, installation length and warranty, from two to five years depending on the model.
Integrated LED, G9, GU10 or E27 socket
A G9 or GU10 socket is easy to replace, an E27 accepts larger bulbs, an integrated LED module cannot be changed. On a linear wall light of 600 to 900 mm, length matters as much as the socket: it determines the space to allow above the unit.
Metal, aluminium, glass or crystal: rendering and care
Metal and aluminium dominate, with a slim structure and care with a soft cloth. Glass gives even light, crystal a sparkling effect best reserved for bold rooms. When the finish matters as much as the light, luxury lights open up the comparison.
Design IP44 bathroom lights or classic models: which styles and finishes?
The pieces in the collection are mostly contemporary: linear wall lights, round ceiling lights with diffusers, a few Japanese-inspired ball wall lights. Black and white dominate, with grey, gold and beige variants.
Black, white, grey or gold: which finish to choose
In a minimalist room, a slim, discreet wall light blends away. In an already bold decor, a ball or a gold model takes the leading role. Original lights and copper lights play that card when the rest of the room stays understated.
IP44 chandelier in the bathroom: when a globe ceiling light replaces it
A chandelier hangs low and quickly clutters a small room. A globe ceiling light lights just as widely without taking up the volume, like the Nerlinina. The same format finds its place in a globe model for the dining room or among our pendant lights.
Can IP44 bathroom lights be used outside the bathroom?
An IP44 is useful wherever humidity, splashes or washing with water are frequent: toilets, utility room, kitchen worktop, unsheltered hallway. Only its resistance changes in relevance, the style of the fixture stays the same.
Lights for WC, corridor and hallway
In a windowless toilet, a wall light or a small ceiling light is enough, in warm white for comfort. A corridor or hallway benefits from a slim model mounted high, which lights without blocking the way through.
Kitchen and worktop: the damp areas that also call for a high rating
Around a worktop, steam and splashes justify the same reflex. To style a modern kitchen decor, a slim wall light or an angled spot under the wall units lights the prep area without glare: see the modern kitchen lights and the design kitchen lights.
Before confirming, check the ceiling height, the length of wall above the unit and socket compatibility. The Rondella ceiling light and the Ivlino wall light cover the two most common uses. Frequently asked questions
Is the IP44 standard mandatory for bathroom lighting?
It is not imposed on the whole room: the requirement concentrates on volumes close to water, around the bathtub, the shower and the vanity top. There, a fixture resistant to splashes and condensation, so at least IP44, is expected. The details of the zones are confirmed at installation with the electrician.
Is the IP44 protection rating waterproof?
No. IP44 indicates protection against solid objects over 1 mm and against water splashes from all directions. It does not protect against immersion. For a light point submerged or heavily hosed down, a higher rating is needed, such as IP65.
Can an IP44 chandelier be installed in a bathroom?
Yes, provided it hangs low or stays away from water volumes. A globe model, such as the IP44 Nerlinina ceiling light, lights widely without cluttering. In a room with a low ceiling, a wall light or a round ceiling light fits more easily.
Where should IP44 spots be installed in the bathroom?
Above the shower and the vanity top for targeted light, or around the edge of the ceiling for accent lighting. Avoid aiming them at the mirror to prevent glare. In older rooms, surface-mounted spots avoid drilling into a fragile ceiling.
What light colour should you choose for a bathroom?
Warm white, between 2700 and 3500 K, gives a rendering close to household lighting and suits both the mirror and general light. Cool white, between 4500 and 6500 K, lights whiter and is mainly used in work areas. Both exist in the collection.
