To light a bathroom, plan for two separate sources: an LED wall light above the mirror, in aluminium and rated IP44 or IP54, and a round ceiling light with a domed diffuser for general illumination. The shower area requires an IP65 model.
What is the best light for a bathroom?
There is no single fixture: it all depends on the area to be lit. Above the mirror and vanity top, an LED wall light in aluminium rated IP44 or IP54 lights the face without casting shadows. On the ceiling, a round ceiling light with a domed diffuser provides even ambient light.
Designer ceiling light for the bathroom
A round ceiling light with a domed diffuser, such as the Bombata round ceiling light in ø 30 cm, spreads light across the room and eliminates dark spots above the washbasin. Its 9 cm height fits under a low ceiling. Rated IP20, it is reserved for dry areas, away from the water point. If the ceiling is next to the shower, choose IP65 protected lights.
Designer lamp for the bathroom
A fixed LED wall light casts grazing light on the mirror and avoids a halo behind you. A G9 model, such as the Ivlino brass wall light with its opaline sphere, lets you choose and replace the bulb. The materials featured in this selection are aluminium, metal, glass and brass, in satin white, matt black or gold finishes. Compare with the full range of lights to see how the styles sit together.
Which IP rating should you choose for a bathroom light?
The IP rating indicates water resistance. IP44 suits splash zones around the washbasin and mirror. IP54 also protects against dust and water spray. IP65 is for areas hit by water jets. IP20 remains reserved for dry areas, away from the water point.
| IP rating | Protection | Where to install | Examples in the selection |
|---|---|---|---|
| IP20 | No water protection | Dry areas, ceiling away from the water point | Bombata round ceiling light, Xani pendant |
| IP44 | Protected against water spray | Mirror, vanity top, splash zones | Sereva, Caldanara, Chromius, Valérié wall lights |
| IP54 | Protected against dust and water spray | Wall lights close to the shower | Wendélia, Licea, Beldanissa, Sordanina, Rovélio, Obelix wall lights |
| IP65 | Protected against water jets | Shower area, very damp room | Dedicated IP65 lighting collection |
IP44 bathroom lights: where to install them
Around the mirror, above the vanity top and on the side wall of the washbasin, IP44 is enough: these spots receive splashes, not jets. The 900 mm Sereva wall light in satin white metal is one of them. Find short and long formats in the IP44 wall lights collection.
IP65 bathroom lights: the shower area
In the shower, water comes in jets: only IP65 protection holds up. An IP20 model placed there will not withstand repeated humidity. For a toilet room or a small damp space, the same reasoning applies, as our guide to lighting a toilet explains.
Wall light, ceiling light or pendant: which format for which area?
To choose, start from the area to be lit. A wall light works near the mirror or vanity top, as focused light. An LED ceiling light illuminates the whole room, especially if it is small. A pendant is reserved for taller spaces, away from water zones, with a good IP rating.
Designer bathroom lights: the wall bar format
The wall bar is the dominant format in this selection. Choose it based on the width of the mirror: 600 mm for a single mirror above one basin, 900 to 1,000 mm for a double vanity. Compact 610 mm tubes and central modules suit round or narrow mirrors.
Decorative bathroom ceiling light: the central format
In the centre of the room, the ø 30 cm round ceiling light provides general lighting. A glass globe pendant, such as Xani, suits a dry, well-ventilated bathroom, never the shower area. The same principle applies to a designer light for the living room.
| Format | Recorded dimensions | Light source | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long light bar | 900 mm (Sereva), 1,000 mm (Wendélia, Sordanina) | Integrated LED | Wide mirror and double vanity |
| Short light bar | 600 mm (Caldanara, Chromius), 610 mm (Beldanissa) | Integrated LED | Single mirror above one basin |
| Bar with central module | Bar and central illuminated diamond (Néa, Rovélio) | Integrated LED | Evenly spread light along the whole length |
| Opaline sphere | H 167 mm, ø 160 mm (Ivlino) | G9 cap | Round mirror, decorative feel in brass finish |
| Cylindrical wall light | H 310 mm, W 93 mm (Valérié) | Integrated LED | Side lighting for a small mirror |
| Adjustable wall light | Rectangular with downward light (Avellane), slim arm (Delvino) | Integrated LED | Directional lighting, vignette effect |
Which light colour for a bathroom?
Warm white, between 2700 and 3500 K, flatters the complexion in front of the mirror and creates a relaxed mood: it is the most common temperature in this selection. Neutral white, from 3500 to 4500 K, stays true for precise makeup. Cool white, from 4500 to 6500 K, gives bright, functional light.
Decorative bathroom lamp in warm white 2700-3500 K
This is the default choice for a bathroom: soft light, flattering on skin, evening mood. The Bombata ceiling light is available in this range, making it a coherent base on the ceiling when the mirror wall light is also warm white.
Neutral white and cool white: which rooms
Neutral white, around 3500 to 4500 K, gives a faithful rendering useful for shaving and makeup. Cool white, from 4500 to 6500 K, suits functional use or a busy room. The Néa wall light offers two temperatures in one model: a point to check before ordering.
What are the bathroom lighting trends for 2026?
The current selection is entirely contemporary and almost entirely LED: slim aluminium wall bars, light tubes, opaline spheres. Satin white, matt black and gold dominate the finishes. Geometric shapes and illuminated central modules are replacing traditional round wall lights, sometimes with a dimmer.
Art Deco bathroom ceiling light and geometric shapes
Central modules, illuminated diamonds and tubes are replacing the round wall light. This geometric vocabulary appears both in an original light and in a more understated piece. For another room, the same language works in modern kitchen decor.
Designer bathroom chandelier: when the room moves upmarket
Opaline spheres, gold finishes, glass globe pendants: the bathroom is now furnished like a living room. A dry, spacious bathroom can take a piece from the gold finishes and exceptional pieces range. See also how a modern living room light translates.
How to light the mirror and vanity top without reflections?
What length of wall light above the mirror?
Aim for a bar that covers about three quarters of the mirror width: 600 mm for a single mirror, 900 to 1,000 mm above a double vanity. Avoid placing the source directly in your line of sight: a bar positioned slightly higher, or two side wall lights, removes the shadow under the chin.
One wall light, two wall lights or a light bar?
Two side wall lights, such as the Wendélia black light bar, give cross lighting that sculpts the face. A frontal bar above the mirror lights more broadly and suits a double vanity. The format you choose depends on the wall space available, not on style.
How to install and care for a bathroom light?
Replacing a designer halogen with an LED wall light
An LED wall light generally reuses the drill holes of an old designer halogen model and removes the bulb you have to change. Check the free length on the wall, the existing wiring and the IP rating if the room is damp. A model from a Lyon lighting clearance sale should be checked the same way before installation.
Care of diffusers and finishes
A soft cloth is enough on aluminium, metal and glass: no abrasive product on matt black or gold finishes. The manufacturer warranty is 2 or 3 years depending on the reference. Models with integrated LED need no replacement bulb.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best light for a bathroom?
It depends on the area: near the mirror and vanity top, an aluminium LED wall light rated IP44 or IP54 lights the face without shadows. On the ceiling, a round ceiling light with a diffuser gives even light. In the shower, an IP65 model is suitable.
Which designer ceiling light for a bathroom?
A round ceiling light with a domed diffuser, such as the ø 30 cm white model, spreads even light and sits in the centre of the room. Check its IP rating based on distance from the water point: IP20 is only suitable for a dry area.
Can you install a designer chandelier in a bathroom?
A chandelier or glass globe pendant can be installed in a fairly dry, well-ventilated bathroom, away from water spray, as these models are often IP20. Near the washbasin or shower, choose a wall light protected to IP44 or IP54.
Is an IP44 light enough in a bathroom?
IP44 protects against water spray and is suitable around the mirror and vanity top. If the wall light is very close to the shower or exposed to dust, go for IP54. In a direct jet zone, only an IP65 model is suitable.
How do you replace a designer halogen with an LED wall light?
An LED wall light generally reuses the same drill holes as an old designer halogen model and removes the bulb you have to change. Check the available length on the wall, the existing wiring and the IP rating if the room is damp like a bathroom.
