Start with the IP rating, then the cable length, then the socket: IP44, a 150 to 180 cm drop and an E27 or G9 depending on the space available above the sink. This selection combines glass and metal, wood and fabric or brass and ribbed glass, from a 20 cm deep globe to a 120 cm bar.

What does the IP44 rating mean for a bathroom?

IP44 means the light resists solid bodies larger than one millimetre and water splashes from all directions. This is the level that allows a pendant to be installed above a sink or near a shower, provided the protected volumes defined for the room are respected.

IP44 bathroom pendant lights: what the two digits protect

The first 4 covers solids: no tool, no thin body larger than one millimetre enters the light. The second 4 covers water: splashes coming from all directions are blocked. The rating covers neither a direct high-pressure jet nor immersion, so the pendant is not brought close to a shower head or a tap handled with plenty of water.

Where to hang the pendant in the room

Above the sink and away from the edge of the bath, the light stays in a splash zone and IP44 is enough. To adjust the intensity according to the time of day, compare the shop's dimmable pendants. A metal model wipes clean in one go, one more reason to look at the black metal models when the room lacks light. The rest of the catalogue can be browsed in our full lighting range.

Which IP44 pendant should you choose for your bathroom?

The format decides before the finish: a globe 28 cm wide and 20 cm deep slips above a sink, a 120 cm bar dresses a large wall, a four-light wood and fabric model lights widely. All display IP44, but the product sheet for the Koban B globe does not mention the bathroom.

Glass and metal globe pendant above the sink

The Koban B globe pendant measures 28 cm wide for 20 cm deep, with a cable dropping to 150 cm: enough to pass above a sink without getting in the way. It comes in black or white, with an E27 socket of 15 W, and accepts a dimmer. Its sheet lists bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room, terrace and outdoor, not the bathroom: the available space decides. On a large wall, the Kop E pendant in 120 cm covers 42 cm deep, drops to 160 cm and does appear, for its part, among bathroom pieces.

Four-light wood and fabric pendant

The Borghese wood pendant plays a different card: 75 cm deep, a 180 cm cable, four vertical cylinders with G9 sockets for 28 W max, in brown. It lights a whole room and suits high ceilings. The Agatha Chromée pendant brings together brass, ribbed glass and acrylic over a 47.4 cm diameter, with three G9 lamps of 3 W max in warm white 2700 to 3500 K. Ribbed glass diffuses without glare facing the mirror, which changes everything in a small bathroom.

At what height should a pendant be hung in a bathroom?

In practice, keep at least 2.10 m from the floor to move under the pendant and 75 to 90 cm between the shade and the edge of the sink. The cables in the selection drop to 150, 160 or 180 cm: the final height therefore adjusts to the ceiling and the actual size of the room.

High ceiling: how far should the cable drop?

Under a ceiling of 3 m or more, the pendant must drop to stay in the field of view: the cable clamp is locked at the desired length, then verticality is checked before tightening. The 180 cm cable of the wood model leaves room under a sloped ceiling. For large circulation heights, look at the designer pendants for staircases, designed to fall straight over several levels.

Pendant and mirror: what distance?

A low source placed too close to the mirror reflects back into the eyes and flattens the face. Move the pendant a few tens of centimetres to the side, or raise it so the shade stays out of the mirror's field. Ribbed glass or a closed diffuser solves much of the problem, and the bulb is chosen in warm white rather than harsh white.

E27 or G9 socket: which holder for a bathroom pendant?

E27 is the large screw socket: an easy bulb to find and replace, it equips the globe pendants at 15 W. G9, more compact, allows several light points on the same light, such as the four cylinders of the wood pendant or the three lamps of the chrome version.

E27: the screw bulb, simple to replace

With an E27, the bulb is changed one-handed, without dismantling the light, which matters in a damp room where the power is cut at every intervention. Both globe pendants are stated at 15 W and accept a dimmer. For light that can be adjusted in the evening, also compare the modern LED pendants, which often work on the same principle.

G9: several light points on the same light

G9 serves lights with several sources: four vertical cylinders at 28 W max on the wood pendant, three lamps at 3 W max on the chrome version, with a warm white stated between 2700 and 3500 K. You gain in distribution what you lose in ease of replacement, each bulb is changed separately. No luminous flux is stated on these sheets: rely on the wattage and the number of points.

Socket, light points and dimmer by model
Model Socket Light points Stated wattage Dimmer
Koban B E27 1 15 W Yes
Kop E E27 1 15 W Yes
Borghese G9 4 28 W max Not specified
Agatha Chromée G9 3 3 W max Not specified, warm white 2700 to 3500 K

Can an IP44 pendant be installed in a kitchen or on a terrace?

Yes: the product sheets list the kitchen, dining room, living room, terrace and outdoor, with the same IP44. Above an island, cable length is what counts; outside, IP44 protects against water splashes, not a direct jet or immersion.

Pendant above an island: a living space

An LED pendant for the kitchen placed above the worktop lights the prep area and the hob, provided it stays around 75 to 85 cm above the surface. This is where modern kitchen decor is played out: a 120 cm bar aligned with the island structures the space better than a central ceiling light. For warmer kitchen decoration, a wood model for the kitchen warms a pale worktop and dusts off with a dry cloth. Glass pendants for the kitchen wipe clean with a sponge after a grease splash.

Terrace and outdoor: what IP44 really protects

Under an awning or in a conservatory, the rating covers projected rain and ambient humidity. It does not cover hosing down or immersion, and a light placed in full wind should be checked every season. White metal pendants age gracefully under a covered terrace, and the Designix lighting range gathers the available finishes.

Pendant or chandelier: which light for a dining room or living room?

An IP44 pendant replaces a chandelier as soon as a water point is nearby. Above a dining table, you want a low, well-proportioned light; in the living room, the colour of the light matters as much as the shape, and a dimmable model is adjusted according to the time of day.

Modern chandelier for a dining room: which shape to choose?

Above a table, the width of the light matters more than its height: a 120 cm bar lights the whole length of a table for six to eight, a circular model 47.4 cm in diameter suits a round table. The four vertical lights of the wood pendant distribute light without a hot spot in the centre. For a softer result, Scandinavian pendants for the living room work on the same low-line principle.

Light colour for a living room: warm or neutral white?

Warm white stated between 2700 and 3500 K gives the living room a light close to halogen, comfortable at the end of the day and flattering on wall tones. Beyond that, the light whitens faces and hardens outlines. A dimmer lowers the intensity without changing the bulb, which avoids stacking sources. Modern white pendants blend into a pale ceiling and let the light do the work.

How do you care for an IP44 pendant and keep it sealed?

A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough on glass and metal; abrasive products are avoided on brass and the diffuser gasket is not removed. To change a bulb, cut the power and screw the diffuser back fully: it is what preserves the IP44 rating.

Cleaning glass, metal and brass

Ribbed glass is cleaned with a microfibre cloth, without glass cleaner on the acrylic. Black or white metal tolerates mild soap, never an abrasive sponge that scratches the paint. The wood and fabric of the Borghese pendant are dusted dry, with the vacuum on a gentle setting. White metal pendants keep their shine with this simple regular wipe, and modern white pendants get dirty less quickly than you might fear.

Changing a bulb without losing IP44

Switch off at the breaker, let it cool completely, then unscrew the diffuser. The gasket is put back in its groove before screwing back on, without forcing: a pinched gasket lets humidity through. Then check that the ring is fully tightened and that the cable has not moved in the cable clamp. The selection is covered by a 2-year warranty.

Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service: you order the pendant that matches your measurements, and the team answers before purchase if any doubt remains about the height or the socket. Take your measurements between ceiling and sink, choose the format, then confirm the model in the collection grid.

Frequently asked questions

What is the IP44 rating?

IP44 is a two-digit protection rating. The first, 4, means that no solid body larger than one millimetre enters the light; the second, 4, that it resists water splashes from all directions. Neither immersion nor a powerful water jet.

What does the IP44 rating mean for bathrooms?

In a bathroom, IP44 allows a pendant in areas exposed to splashes, above the sink or away from the bath. The light remains protected from splashes, but the room's protected volumes must be respected and the power cut before any intervention.

Which light for a WC?

A toilet needs a compact, easy-to-clean light: an IP44 pendant such as the Borghese wood model or the Kop E bar, listed for the bathroom, works if the room keeps sufficient height. An E27 socket lets you change the bulb without any special tool.

Which chandelier for a dining room?

Above a dining table, a low, wide light is preferred to a crystal chandelier: a 120 cm bar or a four-light model lights the whole table. Allow 75 to 90 cm between the shade and the surface to stay in the field of view.

Which light colour for a living room?

A warm white around 2700 to 3500 K gives the living room a light close to halogen, comfortable in the evening. This is the range stated for the three-lamp pendant in the selection. A dimmable model lowers the intensity without changing the bulb.

How do you install a pendant when the ceiling is high?

A high ceiling needs cable: the models in the selection drop to 150, 160 or 180 cm. The length is adjusted on site, the cable clamp is locked, then verticality is checked before tightening. The light must fall straight above the water point or the table.

Renovation: should the pendant be removed before sanding a piece of furniture?

Yes. White vinegar or bicarbonate does not strip varnish, stripping is done with a chemical stripper or a sander, and fine dust gets into the diffuser as well as the gasket that ensures IP44. Remove the light before sanding, then clean the gasket before refitting it.

Our advice for choosing
