Count your downlights from the areas to be lit, not from the walls: align them with the axes of the room and with the furniture, then adjust the spacing according to the ceiling height. This entire selection is fitted with a GU10 bulb, recessed or on track, with a few IP65 models for damp rooms.

Living room ceiling downlight layout: how to arrange downlights on the ceiling?

Downlights are arranged starting from the areas to be lit rather than from the walls: regular axes, alignment with furniture and walkways, spacing adjusted to the ceiling height. Too wide a gap leaves dark areas, too tight a gap multiplies shadows on the floor.

Ceiling downlight layout: the markers to draw before drilling

Draw the axes crossing the room in pencil, then place the points on these lines. One row aligns with the axis of the sofa or the table, another with the circulation path. Under a low ceiling, tighten the gap slightly to keep an even light. For a worktop or a wall to highlight, downlights that swivel to aim the light avoid adding extra points.

Living room downlights: distributing light between living areas

Three areas coexist in a living room: seating, the coffee table and the walkways. Light the walkways first, then the table, and keep the seating in indirect light. A correct layout can be checked on the floor: the pools of light should touch, with no dark gap between them. The references for lighting a living room with downlights and the kitchen downlights cover the two rooms separately.

Modern living room ceiling downlight: which model to choose?

A modern living room downlight is chosen first for its mounting: recessed for a clean, discreet ceiling, on track when the light needs to be aimed at a wall or a worktop. Shape and colour then follow the style of the room.

Recessed GU10 downlight or track downlight: which mounting?

The recessed version sits flush with the ceiling and goes unnoticed: the Ombrio downlight (Ø 5.2 cm, black aluminium) or the Ridley (Ø 8.5 cm, fine gold trim) play this card. The track, on the other hand, is visible and adjustable: the Tivano, a black cylinder 13 cm deep, is fixed to the ceiling and can be aimed. See also track rails for adjustable downlights and downlights to recess into a ceiling.

Round, tube or square: the shape that suits the ceiling

The round shape remains the most common and suits anything. The square, like the white Mirka with a black ring or the adjustable black Nemio (12.6 cm square), makes more of a statement on the ceiling. The tube, deeper, is reserved for areas where the light needs aiming. For finishes, compare black finishes and white versions.

What is a GU10 bulb?

A GU10 bulb is a two-pin bulb that locks with a quarter turn into its holder. It can be replaced without changing the fitting, which means the colour temperature, dimming or a connected bulb can be chosen separately.

GU10 base: what the two pins mean

The two pins are one centimetre apart and slightly wider at the tip: they guide the bulb into the holder and then lock by rotation. The base carries no information about power or colour, what matters is the standardisation of the shape.

Why this whole collection is GU10

Because the bulb becomes a replaceable consumable: when it weakens, you change the GU10, not the downlight. The entire selection is rated at 10 W, with a 5-year warranty on the fitting. Find the whole range in the complete range of downlights.

What is the most powerful GU10 LED?

The power comes from the bulb installed in the downlight, not from the fitting: it is the bulb that consumes and heats up. A more powerful bulb gives more light, but in a recessed fitting the heat also matters. The right marker remains the use of the room.

What the power rating on the bulb tells you

The figure engraved on the GU10 describes the bulb alone. It says nothing about the amount of light produced, which also depends on the technology used and the beam angle. So compare two bulbs of equal power before concluding.

Should you go up in power in a recessed downlight?

In a closed recessed fitting, heat stays trapped behind the trim. A bulb reasonably sized for the room lasts longer than one pushed to the maximum. For a large space, it is better to multiply the points than to force a single one, for example with the models from the LED downlight selection.

How do you change the bulb in an adjustable or recessed downlight?

Switch off the power, let the bulb cool, then aim the head or release the trim to access the base. The GU10 bulb unlocks with a quarter turn. Fit a new GU10, lock it again and replace the trim before switching the power back on.

Changing the bulb in an adjustable ceiling downlight

On a model like the Nemio or the Velsamissa, first tilt the head towards you: the base becomes accessible without forcing. Grip the bulb between two fingers, push slightly and turn a quarter turn. The new bulb locks with the reverse movement.

Changing the bulb in a recessed downlight, including in the bathroom

On a recessed fitting with a trim, gently lever the ring to release the bulb. In a damp room, refit the seal and the glass the right way round: the protection rating depends on them. For special cases, see recessed models with LED bulb.

Parallel downlight wiring: how do you connect several downlights?

Parallel wiring connects each downlight to the same live and the same neutral: they all receive the same supply, whatever their number on the circuit. Switch off the power at the breaker, identify the wires and have the connection checked by an electrician.

What wiring in parallel means

Each fitting is supplied by a branch from the common line. The practical consequence: if one downlight fails, the others keep working. This is the expected setup as soon as several points share the same switch.

Before connecting: switch off the power and identify the wires

Switch off at the breaker, check that there is no voltage, then identify live, neutral and earth. Use terminals suited to the number of conductors and leave the connections accessible. Electrical connection is a job for a professional. As for the choice, the installation is prepared with the complete range of downlights.

IP65 GU10 downlight: what precautions in the bathroom and outdoors?

The IP65 rating indicates a fitting protected against dust and water jets: it is suitable for damp rooms. An IP20 remains reserved for dry rooms. In the bathroom, the rating is chosen according to the zone around the bathtub or the washbasin.

IP65 GU10 downlight: what the rating really protects

The rating describes the fitting, not the bulb alone. An IP65 downlight keeps its protection as long as its seal and glass are in place and correctly refitted after a bulb change. Most of the selection is IP20, to be reserved for dry rooms.

Installing a recessed downlight in the bathroom

The closer you get to the bathtub or shower, the higher the requirement: this is where the IP65 version makes full sense. See bathroom specialists and, for a sheltered terrace, outdoor versions.

Dimmable or connected GU10 downlight: what to check

On a GU10 downlight, dimming depends on the bulb and the dimmer, not on the fitting. Likewise, a connected bulb receives its commands from its own module. Before buying, check the compatibility of the GU10 you plan to install.

Dimmable GU10 downlight: the role of the bulb

The fitting is only a holder: bulb and dimmer must understand each other. A non-dimmable GU10 will buzz or cut out in steps on a dimmed circuit. Look at downlights compatible with dimmers before building your circuit.

GU10 downlight and connected bulb: what happens inside the fitting

The connected bulb carries its own control, with no module in the downlight. It is operated from a phone and keeps its function even if you change the fitting later. Browse modern style for the ceiling to match the whole.

Payment is secure, delivery is tracked, returns are possible and the Designix customer service remains reachable to confirm a choice. Before ordering, note the cut-out diameter, the ceiling colour and the protection rating of the room: these three pieces of information are enough to decide between several references, such as the Ombrio recessed downlight in Ø 5.2 cm, the Mirka square downlight or the Tivano track downlight. Frequently asked questions about the GU10 downlight

What distance between two ceiling downlights?

The gap depends on the ceiling height and the desired effect: general lighting needs wider-spaced downlights, highlighting needs them closer together. The layout marker remains alignment with the areas to be lit and with the furniture rather than a single measurement.

Living room downlights: how do you light without glare?

Aim the downlights at the walls and worktops rather than at the seating, and prefer a reflector or a diffuser to soften the beam. An adjustable downlight allows the angle to be corrected after installation, without redoing the ceiling.

Is it possible to replace a GU10 halogen bulb with an LED?

Yes. The GU10 base is the same: a GU10 LED bulb fits with a quarter turn in place of a halogen one. Just check compatibility if the fitting is on a dimmer, because not all LED bulbs behave the same way.

GU10 downlight 3000K or 4000K: which colour temperature to choose?

The colour temperature is carried by the bulb, not by the downlight: you can therefore choose it freely. A light around 3000K suits relaxation rooms like the living room, a light close to 4000K suits workspaces and preparation areas.

Can a GU10 downlight take a connected bulb?

Yes, provided the bulb uses the GU10 base: the control then goes through the bulb itself. The fitting remains a holder. Check the bulb's compatibility with your installation, especially if the circuit includes a dimmer.
