These grey spotlights are surface-mounted wood and metal light fixtures with an E27 socket and an IP20 rating. They attach to the ceiling of a living room, kitchen, hallway or entryway without a false ceiling, and cast directed light where you need it rather than a broad wash.
What is a grey spotlight and what light does it give?
A grey spotlight is a surface-mounted light fixture with a very dark grey finish that casts directed light rather than a broad wash. Combined with wood and metal, it stays discreet on a light ceiling while drawing a crisp point. The E27 socket leaves the choice of bulb.
Grey or black spotlights: what difference on the ceiling?
Anthracite is a very dark grey, almost black, but it keeps a slight depth that softens the outline of the fixture. On a white ceiling, that is where the difference lies: a matte black spotlight draws a sharp line, an anthracite one reads as a deep patch, a little softer, that pairs more easily with light wood. To compare the two finishes, browse black spotlights and their variants.
Anthracite grey or light grey: what effect in the room?
Anthracite is a family of very dark greys, with no blue or green cast: there is no single colour code, and every colour chart places it differently. As a result, two anthracite finishes can differ slightly. In the room, it reads as a deep grey when light hits it at an angle, and as a soft black in shadow. Light grey, by contrast, almost disappears against the ceiling and gives a continuous effect. Compare your samples under real light rather than on a screen, and look at grey spotlights to place the shades.
Where to install a grey spotlight in the home?
In a living room, kitchen, hallway, entryway or dressing room, a grey spotlight lights a precise area: worktop, walkway, entry wall. Surface-mounted, it needs no false ceiling. The four-head model suits large surfaces, the adjustable one suits targeted lighting.
| Room | What it lights | Suitable format | Model from the collection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | A wall, a reading corner, the sofa | Adjustable spotlight or multi-head track | Brennus or Ferolux |
| Kitchen | The worktop | Track with several adjustable heads | Brennus spotlight |
| Hallway | The circulation axis | Surface-mounted spotlight aimed at the floor | Brennus spotlight |
| Entryway | The welcome area and the mirror | Compact adjustable spotlight | Brennus spotlight |
| Dressing room | Rails and the back of the wardrobe | Targeted adjustable spotlight | Brennus spotlight |
A wood and metal spotlight above a worktop
Over a worktop, light must fall in front of you, not behind you: a track with several adjustable heads is set head by head to cover the preparation areas. The Brennus four-head spotlight on a wood track is 23 cm high and combines light wood with grey cups. Its grey finish stays discreet on a white ceiling, including in an open kitchen. To go further, see LED spotlights for kitchens.
Lighting a hallway, an entryway or a dressing room
In a hallway, light the circulation axis rather than the walls, with points aimed at the floor to avoid cast shadows. In an entryway, a compact adjustable spotlight highlights the mirror or the console. In a dressing room, target the rails and the back of the wardrobe. The same fixture can cover all four rooms: that is the case with the Brennus spotlight, designed for the living room as well as the kitchen, hallway, entryway and dressing room. How to arrange spotlights on the ceiling?
Spread the spotlights according to the areas to be lit, not according to the number of positions: one point above the worktop, one on the circulation axis, one near the entryway. Keep a regular gap between two spotlights and keep them away from the walls to avoid hard shadows. With surface mounting, mark before drilling.
How to distribute spotlights in a room?
Start from uses, not symmetry. Mentally trace the areas that need light: a worktop, a reading armchair, a walkway. Place one point per area, then spread the remaining points evenly so the ceiling stays balanced. As a rule, count three to four sources per living space, at different heights and angles. A track with adjustable heads lets you adjust after installation without redoing the wiring. See also black adjustable spotlights.
What is the minimum distance between a spotlight and the wall?
A spotlight too close to the wall draws a hard cone and creates a shadow right beneath it. In practice, offset it from the wall by at least half the height between floor and ceiling to get an even wash of light; the usual guide is around 60 to 80 cm depending on the room and the chosen angle. If the wall is to be highlighted, better a point deliberately aimed at it than several points too close together.
Can spotlights be installed in a living room without a false ceiling?
Yes. A surface-mounted spotlight attaches directly to the ceiling or wall and needs no false ceiling or recess. The wiring runs along the surface, which makes it suitable for older homes and concrete ceilings. That is the case with the models in this collection.
Is a recessed spotlight trim essential?
The trim belongs to recessed spotlights: it closes the gap between the fixture and the ceiling and provides the finish around the cut-out. A surface-mounted spotlight does not need one, since nothing is recessed: the housing is visible, the fixing is on the surface and the cable runs along the support. No cut-out to plan, no diameter to match to the millimetre.
Surface-mounted or recessed spotlight: which to choose?
Recessed disappears into the ceiling, but requires a recess or a false ceiling and can no longer be moved. Surface-mounted is a little more visible, but installs anywhere and is easy to change. In an older home, a concrete ceiling or a room where work is limited, surface mounting remains the simple solution. For a flush look, see black recessed spotlights or their equivalents in white recessed models.
Industrial or modern grey spotlight: which to choose for your interior?
The industrial style relies on exposed wood and metal, with a track and several heads. The modern and contemporary styles prefer a more understated, adjustable line that fades into the ceiling. In both cases, the grey finish brings the same discretion and pairs with light wood.
What a wood and metal finish changes
Wood warms the light and breaks the strictness of metal; metal holds the line and structures the fixture. This combination works because the two materials answer each other: the grey cup of the Brennus spotlights echoes the ceiling, the light wood brings warmth. That is what sets these spotlights apart from all-metal models, which feel colder in a living space. Find this principle in metal spotlights and our selection of modern spotlights.
A track spotlight or an adjustable spotlight: what effect on the ceiling?
The multi-head track aligns the sources and gives a marked rhythm, workshop style: the Brennus spotlight is part of this and suits large surfaces. The single adjustable spotlight, like the Ferolux, plays it more discreetly: one head, a precise gesture, a smaller footprint. If you want to be able to adjust everything and even dim the light, take a look at dimmer-compatible spotlights.
E27 socket, IP20, 40 W: what these features change day to day
The E27 socket takes a standard bulb, which you can replace or upgrade without changing the fixture. The IP20 rating indicates use in a dry interior. The product sheet states 40 W: that is the limit to respect when choosing the bulb, so the spotlight does not overheat.
| Feature | Brennus spotlight | Ferolux spotlight |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Wood and metal | Wood and metal |
| Style | Industrial | Modern, contemporary, industrial |
| Type | Four-head surface-mounted spotlight on a track | Adjustable surface-mounted spotlight |
| Dimensions | Height 23 cm | Height 17 cm, depth 24 cm |
| Socket and power | E27, 40 W | E27, 40 W |
| Protection and warranty | IP20, 2-year warranty | IP20, 2-year warranty |
Do LED spotlights get hot?
An LED gets much less hot than a halogen or incandescent bulb, but it still gives off heat through its base and heat sink. In a surface-mounted IP20 spotlight, air circulates around the fixture, which limits build-up. The risk stays low as long as the stated power is respected and nothing covers the spotlight. Incidents mainly come from bulbs that are too powerful, insulation placed against the fixture or a poorly tightened connection. See black LED spotlights and the white LED version.
Which E27 bulb to choose in a grey spotlight?
Stay within the power stated on the product sheet, here 40 W, and choose the colour temperature according to use: around 2700 to 3000 K for a living room or bedroom, more neutral around 4000 K for a kitchen or worktop. An LED bulb with an E27 base is more than enough for a directed point. If you want to adjust the intensity, make sure the bulb is compatible with the dimmer.
Which colours pair with a grey spotlight?
Grey pairs with off-white, beige, light wood and deep greens. It also takes a sharp contrast with matte black. The key is to avoid two greys that are too close, which cancel each other out instead of answering each other.
- Grey: a discreet dark point on a light ceiling, pairs with light wood, off-white, beige, deep green.
- Light grey: almost disappears against the ceiling, continuous effect, pairs with white, light shades, pale blue.
- Matte black: drawn contrast and an assertive line, pairs with crisp white and dark wood.
What curtain colour with a light grey sofa?
With a light grey sofa, an off-white or beige curtain keeps the room bright and soft. An anthracite, deep green or midnight blue curtain creates a sharp contrast that structures the living space. Avoid a grey too close to the sofa, which blends into it and erases the relief. For a change of tone, other finishes exist in gold spotlights.
What curtain with a dark grey sofa?
On a dark grey sofa, a light curtain, ecru linen or off-white, visibly lightens the room. An anthracite curtain extends the enveloping effect and highlights light wood. In a pink and grey bathroom, powder pink and grey form a soft, crisp duo; note however that an IP20 spotlight is not intended for a damp room. For those spaces, better to look at white outdoor spotlights.
How to care for a grey spotlight and keep it spotless?
Switch off the fixture, let it cool, then dust the cups with a soft, slightly damp cloth, without abrasive products. On wood, a dry cloth is enough. Check once a year that the fixings are tight and the E27 bulb is in good condition. The collection comes with a 2-year warranty.
Cleaning a wood and metal finish without damaging it
On a metal cup, a slightly damp microfibre cloth removes dust and fingerprints; dry immediately to avoid water marks. On wood, stick to a dry or very slightly damp cloth, without alcohol, without solvent and without an abrasive sponge that scratches the surface. Twice a year is enough in a living space, more often in a kitchen where grease settles.
Check the fixings and the bulb every year
Once a year, cut the power, then check that the fixing screws hold the support firmly to the ceiling. Take the opportunity to look at the condition of the E27 bulb: a blackened base or flickering light signals a replacement. It is also time to check that the power of the installed bulb still matches the one stated for the fixture. The Ferolux and Brennus spotlights, both with a 2-year warranty, are checked in the same way.

Frequently asked questions about grey spotlights
What colour is anthracite grey?
Anthracite is a very dark grey, almost black, with no blue or green cast. In an interior, it reads as a deep grey when light hits it at an angle, and as a soft black in shadow. That is what makes it easy to pair with light wood and metal.
What is the colour code for anthracite grey?
There is no single code: anthracite refers to a family of very dark greys, and every colour chart places it differently. Two anthracite finishes can therefore differ from one wall to another, or from a fixture to a wall. For a safe match, compare samples under the light of the room rather than on a screen.
What is the fire risk linked to installing LED spotlights?
The risk stays low when the stated power of the fixture is respected and nothing covers the spotlight. Incidents mainly come from bulbs that are too powerful, insulation placed against the fixture or a poorly tightened connection. A ventilated surface mounting reduces these contact points.
Are surface-mounted spotlights suitable for a bathroom?
An IP20 rating corresponds to use in a dry interior. In a damp room, that is not the right rating, even surface-mounted. Better to look for a model intended for that use and check ranges designed for humidity, rather than fitting an IP20 spotlight above a bathtub or shower.
Can these spotlights be installed on a concrete ceiling?
Yes, surface mounting fixes to the surface, with no cut-out or recess. You need a wall plug suited to the concrete support and careful marking before drilling, to align the points. The cable runs along the ceiling or in a discreet trunking. Remember to check the thickness of the support and the available drilling depth.
