A black tube spotlight is chosen first by its socket: GU10 with pins so you can change the bulb, E14 or E27 screw-in, or integrated LED so you never have to touch it again. Then comes the light temperature, warm white for a hallway or living room, neutral white for a kitchen, and finally the mounting method, surface-mounted under the ceiling or on a track.
What is a black tube spotlight and what light does it give?
An elongated cylinder, fixed under the ceiling, that sends light downwards without taking up floor or wall space. The body is made of aluminium, metal, steel or plastic, always in a black finish here, with a GU10, E14, E27 bulb or an integrated LED source.
Black tube ceiling spotlight
Surface mounting is the most common: the cylinder stays visible, protruding a few centimetres below the slab. This is what distinguishes this fixture from a recessed spotlight, which requires a cut-out in the ceiling. The advantage is concrete: nothing to drill deep, easy replacement, and a clean look on a low ceiling. Compare the sizes in our ceiling spotlights if you are hesitating between several body heights. The beam goes straight down onto a worktop, a hallway or a coffee table, and can be adjusted on adjustable models.
Black tube spotlight: the black finish, discreet or bold
On a white ceiling, black draws a line and underlines the geometry of the room. On a tinted ceiling or a dark wall, it almost disappears. The range also sometimes combines white or a gold edge, useful for warming up the whole without changing family. For a softer atmosphere, go for the white spotlights, which blend in more.
Where to install a black tube spotlight: kitchen, hallway, living room or dressing room?
First above a worktop, in a hallway and in the living room, then at the entrance or in a dressing room depending on the space available. In a passage, you want a clear light that leaves no dark zone; in front of a wardrobe or a living room wall, an adjustable model lets you aim precisely.
Kitchen spotlight: lighting the worktop
A cylinder placed directly above the splashback lights your hands and the chopping board, without casting a shadow on the gesture. A neutral white, around 3500 to 4500 K, makes food colours more accurate. The spotlights for kitchen lighting are also available on track to follow a central island. Check the space between the top of the cabinet and the ceiling before choosing.
Living room spotlight: lighting without glare
In the living room, the spotlight should not fall in the line of sight when you are seated. Aim it at a wall, a bookcase or a coffee table. For a hallway or an entrance, a fixed and compact model is enough: see the spotlights for a well-lit hallway and the spotlights designed for the living room.
| Room | What you want to light | Recommended mounting | Point to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | Worktop, splashback | Ceiling or track, adjustable | GU10 socket or integrated LED |
| Hallway | Passage, evening circulation | Surface-mounted ceiling | Warm white temperature |
| Living room | Walls, coffee table, bookcase | Ceiling or track, adjustable | Dimmer if the atmosphere changes |
| Entrance | Corner, mirror | Surface-mounted ceiling | Compact format |
| Dressing room | Wardrobe, shelves | Track or adjustable | Neutral white to read colours |
How to arrange ceiling spotlights in a living room?
Distribute the points in regular lines, with an identical gap between each, and set the first one back from the wall. The living room ceiling spotlight layout above all avoids two pitfalls: a spotlight just above a seat and a spotlight in the line of sight. Aim at a wall or a bookcase instead.
Ceiling spotlight distance: what determines it
There is no single spacing. Three elements govern it: the ceiling height, the beam angle and the surface to cover. The higher the ceiling, the more the points are spaced to avoid patches; the tighter the angle, the closer they are. An adjustable model can be corrected after installation, which limits the risk.
Living room ceiling spotlight layout: the two mistakes to avoid
First mistake: aligning the spotlights on the furniture rather than on the room, which creates unnecessary lit zones. Second: multiplying the points for no reason, until the atmosphere is flattened. Better to have three or four well-placed sources and some accent lighting than a starry ceiling. The number is decided room by room, not at random.
Adjustable or fixed black tube spotlight: how to choose?
An adjustable spotlight pivots on its ball joint: you aim it at a worktop, a wall or a painting. A fixed spotlight lights straight below it and suits passages. The shape does not change, only the mechanism differs, so the choice is made on what you want to light and on the possibility of correcting after installation.
Adjustable black tube spotlight: what you can aim at
The ball joint allows a few dozen degrees of movement, enough to shift a beam from a piece of furniture to a wall. The adjustable models come in several cylinders on the same bar, with individual adjustment. The Sertorano spotlight, adjustable and in warm white, illustrates this compact format of 16 cm depth. Some models accept a dimmer, others do not: check before buying.
Fixed spotlight: passages and small rooms
In a hallway, an entrance or a dressing room, there is nothing to aim at: the straight beam is enough and requires less adjustment. The adjustable models in black finish remain useful if the hallway leads to a work area. On track, the track solutions let you add a point without drilling again. The Mirtoristo on track combines steel, plastic and a gold edge on an E27 socket.
Which socket to choose between GU10, E14, E27 and integrated LED?
The GU10 socket takes a pin bulb, the E14 and E27 a screw bulb, small or large format. An integrated LED spotlight has no bulb to change: the source is fixed in the fixture. The choice is therefore between a replaceable bulb and an all-LED model, not on appearance.
GU10, E14, E27: the bulb is replaceable
You keep control over the power and the shade: if the result does not suit you, you change the bulb, not the fixture. The GU10 clips in with a quarter turn, the E14 and E27 screw in. The Tube L 6 cm surface-mounted accepts a GU10, with an aluminium body 6 cm in diameter. Find the spotlights fitted with GU10 for this format.
Integrated LED: nothing to change
The source is soldered into the fixture: no bulb to buy, a uniform result over its entire lifespan. In return, the power and colour temperature are fixed at purchase. The LED spotlights are well suited to a hallway or a dressing room where you no longer want to think about it.
| Socket | Bulb type | What it changes | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|---|
| GU10 | Pin bulb | Replaceable bulb | You want to change the power or the shade |
| E14 | Small format screw bulb | Simple replacement | Several points on the same support |
| E27 | Large format screw bulb | Wider source | Track with a single socket |
| Integrated LED | Non-replaceable source | No bulb to buy | You are looking for a ready-to-install model |
Black tube spotlight IP20: can it be installed in a bathroom or outdoors?
No. The models in this collection are rated IP20: protected against solid bodies, they are not protected against water. They are reserved for dry rooms, kitchen, hallway, living room, entrance or dressing room. For a bathroom or outdoors, a different protection rating is required.
IP20: what it exactly covers
The first digit protects against dust and objects, the second against water. An IP20 therefore withstands household dust and a finger, but not splashes or condensation. It is sufficient above a worktop or in a hallway, provided it is not placed under a source of steam.
Bathroom and outdoors: change spotlight family
Near a bathtub or a shower, humidity requires a higher rating. Outdoors, rain requires a waterproof model. Go for the bathroom spotlights and, for a terrace or a facade, for an outdoor fixture. The recessed spotlights are the other possible family depending on the ceiling configuration.
How to pair a black tube spotlight with a black chandelier or pendant?
The chandelier carries the atmosphere in the centre, the spotlights take the walls and corners. This distributes two levels of light in the same room, without one crushing the other, and you keep the same colour family, black, white or gold, so that the whole remains legible.
Black industrial chandelier and spotlights: what distribution?
Above the table, the chandelier comes down and concentrates the light. The spotlights stay on the periphery, aimed at the walls or a shelf, rather than at the already lit centre. This distribution gives relief to the room and avoids flat light. To find pieces in the same vein, browse the LED spotlights for the living room.
Black pendants: keep the same colour family
Two blacks from different sources do not always look identical: matte, satin or gloss change the result. If you marry black pendants and spotlights, keep the same finish intensity. A gold edge on a cylinder discreetly echoes the accents of a chandelier. To move away from black, compare with the white spotlights.
How to change the bulb of an adjustable spotlight and maintain the black finish?
Cut the power, aim the spotlight towards you, then unclip or unscrew depending on the socket, GU10 with pins, E14 or E27 screw-in. Put the spotlight back in line before switching on again. The black finish is dusted dry, with a soft cloth, without abrasive product or scouring sponge.
How to change the bulb of an adjustable spotlight?
A quarter turn is enough on a GU10: press lightly then turn. On a screw socket, unscrew without forcing. Take the opportunity to check the condition of the socket and remove accumulated dust, which darkens the beam. An integrated LED model cannot be replaced: the entire fixture changes at the end of its life.
Changing a recessed ceiling LED spotlight: why it is not the same operation
A black tube spotlight is surface-mounted or on track, never recessed: there is therefore no cut-out to undo. If you are replacing an existing recessed spotlight, note the diameter of the cut-out and the type of connection before choosing a surface-mounted model that will cleanly cover the hole. A well-sized ceiling spotlight often solves the problem without repainting.
For an adjustable atmosphere in the evening, look at the dimmer-compatible spotlights: about a third of the models in the selection accept it, to be checked sheet by sheet. To place these cylinders among the other shapes, compare with all spotlight families and our selection of home lighting fixtures.

Frequently asked questions about the black tube spotlight
What distance should there be between ceiling spotlights?
No single distance: the spacing depends on the ceiling height, the beam angle and what it must light. Distribute the points regularly, with the same gap between each, and set the first one back from the wall to avoid a too-marked patch above a piece of furniture.
How to change the bulb of an adjustable spotlight?
Cut the power at the circuit breaker, then aim the spotlight towards you. On a GU10 socket, the bulb unclips with a quarter turn; on an E14 or E27 socket, it unscrews. Reposition the spotlight in line before switching on again. An integrated LED model cannot be replaced this way.
How to change a recessed LED ceiling spotlight?
Black tube spotlights are surface-mounted or on track, not recessed. If you are replacing an existing recessed spotlight, note the diameter of the cut-out and the type of connection before choosing a surface-mounted model that will cleanly cover the cut-out, without repainting around it.
Is a black tube spotlight suitable for a bathroom or outdoors?
No: the models in this collection are rated IP20, protected against solid bodies but not against water or humidity. For a bathroom or outdoors, a higher protection rating is required, such as spotlights dedicated to these rooms.
Which colour temperature to choose for a black tube spotlight?
Warm white, from 2700 to 3500 K, gives a light close to the classic bulb and suits the living room, the hallway or a reading corner. Neutral white, from 3500 to 4500 K, makes colours more accurate: it is useful in the kitchen and in a dressing room.
