To light a patio, a path or a facade without cables, plan for a self-contained power supply at each point (solar panel, rechargeable battery or cell) and a fixing by stake, bracket or wall screw. A battery outdoor spotlight goes where running a line would be too long, too expensive or impossible, with no chasing and no connection to the consumer unit.

What is a battery outdoor spotlight and where to install it?
A battery outdoor spotlight works without a connection to the mains: it runs on a solar panel, a rechargeable battery or a cell, and fixes to the wall, the ground or a bracket. You install it where running a line would be too long, too expensive or impossible.
Battery outdoor spotlight: what it changes on a patio
Without wires, power comes from a rechargeable battery or a solar sensor; the fixing depends on the spot: a stake for a border, screws for a wall. Check the runtime stated on the product sheet. Solar outdoor spotlights go in with no trench and no work on the consumer unit.
Battery outdoor spotlight: the places where running a cable is impossible
An old facade to preserve, a pergola mounted on a slab, a garden stair far from the consumer unit, a shed with no power: in these cases the line is missing or costs more than the fitting. A battery or cell spotlight settles the question. To place these models among the rest of the house, browse all the Designix lighting families.
Solar or rechargeable spotlight: which to choose for outdoors?
Solar captures the day's energy and goes where the sun reaches, with no upkeep beyond cleaning the panel. A rechargeable model plugs into a socket to charge: more reliable in a shaded area, but it takes remembering.
Battery outdoor solar spotlight: what you need to know
The built-in panel requires an open spot: a well-exposed patio, a path with no tree nearby, a low wall above the planting. Lasting shade reduces the charge and the evening light. Solar LED models often push into the ground with no special tool.
Battery outdoor rechargeable spotlight: what you need to know
On a shaded facade wall, a covered entrance or under a closed pergola, the rechargeable battery remains the safe choice since you fill it from the mains. The LED range made for outdoors often offers both versions with the same housing design.
| Wireless solution | Where it works best | What to plan for | Point to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in solar panel | Patio, garden and path well exposed to the sun | An open location, with no lasting shade | Regular cleaning of the panel |
| Rechargeable battery on a socket | Facade wall, entrance, shaded area | An accessible socket for charging | The stated operating time |
| Cell or removable battery | Marking and occasional accent lighting | Replacing the cell | The cell type stated on the product sheet |
| Wireless control | Several points to switch on together | Enough range between the control and the spotlight | Compatibility between the spotlights |
| Adjustable spotlight on a bracket | Targeted lighting of a wall, a step or a border | A stable bracket and an angle to set | The fixing after windy spells |
Is 1000 lumens good lighting?
1000 lumens give a clear light, enough to light an entrance, a corner of a patio or a wide path. For simple marking, far less will do. To read outside or cover a large table, aim higher, and the beam angle matters as much as the output.
What is the difference between lumens and watts?
Lumens measure the light emitted, watts the consumption. A frugal spotlight can light as much as a hungrier model, and it is the output, not the power, that tells you whether the area will be readable once night falls.
Why does the beam angle change everything outdoors?
A narrow beam reaches far and draws a clean circle on a wall or a step. A wide beam floods a table and fades beyond it. Set the angle before judging the amount of light, and test in the evening, never in full daylight.
How to create two-way lighting without running wires?
Wiring is replaced by a wireless control: remote, radio switch or control from the phone depending on the model. The light switches on from several points with no drilling and no conduit between two switches. This is the solution chosen when the walls are finished or old.
How to wire spotlights in series or in parallel?
Series and parallel concern spotlights connected to the mains: the wiring decides, never the fitting. A battery outdoor spotlight has nothing to tap, it lives on its battery or its panel. Check the range when several points must switch on together. Adjustable spotlights are often controlled in groups.
Can several outdoor spotlights be switched on together?
Yes, with a shared control: remote, app or radio switch. Some models accept dimming, handy for moving from discreet marking to a clearer light. For that, see the dimmable spotlights. The same grouped-control logic equips spotlights for hallways, indoors.
Outdoor E27 bulb or integrated LED: which to choose?
An outdoor E27 bulb can be replaced: you choose its power and its light colour, and you change it without changing the fitting. An integrated LED cannot be replaced, but the block is designed for damp and ages with the spotlight.
Outdoor E27 bulb: what to watch for?
The bulb must be rated for outdoor use, otherwise damp will damage it. The colour temperature is read on the packaging: around 2700 to 3000 kelvins for a warm light, near 4000 kelvins for a more neutral result. As for shapes, adjustable LED spotlights offer precise angle setting. LED spotlights with a crafted design mainly refine the line of the housing.
Integrated LED: what you gain and what you lose
You gain a sealed, compact assembly, designed as one piece, with no bulb to find and no gasket to reposition. You lose the option to change the light colour or step up the power later. On a fitting mounted high up, that trade-off is weighed before buying.
How many outdoor spotlights to plan for and how to spread them?
It all depends on the area and what you want to see: marking a path takes few points, lighting a dining patio asks for more. Spread the spotlights by zone, aiming each beam at the place to be lit.
How many spotlights in a kitchen?
Indoors, the usual count is one point per work zone, without multiplying the sources. Outdoors, the logic holds: one area to light, one spotlight. LED spotlights for kitchens detail these layouts above the worktop. The reasoning carries over elsewhere in the house, with LED spotlights for living rooms for reading corners.
How to avoid shadow areas outdoors?
A single point set low leaves a sharp cone and dark corners. Cross two sources, one grazing the ground, one washing the wall, and move the spotlight away from the foot of the wall to stretch the light. Set into a slab or a step, recessed outdoor spotlights are forgotten by day. Their adjustable version, adjustable recessed spotlights, lets you fine-tune the axis after installation.
| Location | What you expect from the light | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Patio or outdoor dining corner | A light wide enough for the table and the faces | The beam angle and the fixing method |
| Garden path and walkway | A grazing marking that guides without glare | The aim towards the ground and damp resistance |
| Facade and house wall | A wall wash that reveals the material | The wall fixing and the protection rating |
| Pergola, shelter or awning | Light under the structure, with no visible cable | The weight of the spotlight and its fixing method |
| Outdoor stair and step | A clean light, with no shadow area | The precision of the aim and the switching control |
| Garden and border | A low, discreet ambient light | The mounting height and the colour of the housing |
Material, colour and protection rating: how to choose?
Outdoors, the product sheet states the protection rating, the material and the socket. This collection has 2 models: their features are to be compared on each page. The colour comes next, depending on the wall receiving the spotlight.
Black or white outdoor spotlight: what look on a facade?
Black disappears on a dark wall, a dark brick or a grey render: only the light remains visible in the evening. White blends into a pale render and draws less attention in full daylight. To decide, browse the black finishes. The white colour is judged the same way.
How is the direction of an outdoor spotlight chosen?
Aim it at what you want to see, never at the eye: a step, a trunk, a door. A metal housing withstands temperature swings better than resin on a south-facing facade. Check the setting after a windy spell.
How to install and care for a battery outdoor spotlight?
Most screw onto a bracket or push into the ground, with no electrical connection. Care is limited to cleaning the solar panel and the glass, checking the fixing after winter and storing or recharging the battery when the model allows it.
Where to place a spotlight to mark a path?
Space the points along the path, at low height, and aim towards the ground to avoid glare. One stake every two to three metres is usually enough to read the route, the distance being set by the width of the path. For a slab or a hard patio, recessed LED outdoor spotlights take over.
How to care for an outdoor solar spotlight?
A clean panel captures better: a damp cloth is enough, with no abrasive product. After winter, tighten the fixing and check the housing gasket. If the battery is removable and the spotlight weakens, recharge it or store it away from frost.

Frequently asked questions
How to create two-way lighting without running wires?
Classic two-way switching requires two switches linked by a wire. Without wiring, a remote or a wireless switch controls the spotlight from several places, with no drilling and no conduit. Check that the stated range covers the distance between the two control points.
How to wire spotlights in series or in parallel?
Series or parallel connection concerns spotlights linked to the mains: the wiring decides. A battery outdoor spotlight has no cable to tap, it runs on a battery or a solar panel. If your project stays wired, entrust the tapping to an electrician.
Can a ceiling light be installed without drilling?
Without drilling, turn to a model fixed by a bracket, a hook or a base, or to a battery fitting simply set down. Outdoors, wireless spotlights push into the ground or screw onto an existing bracket, with no drill and no cable to run.
An outdoor wall light for a patio, is wireless possible?
Yes: a wireless outdoor wall light fixes to the patio wall and runs on a battery or a solar panel, with no line to run from the consumer unit. It lights as a wall wash and can be controlled remotely. Check the protection rating and the fixing type on the product sheet.
What to do with an outdoor solar spotlight in winter?
In winter, the panel captures less: clean it, clear it of dead leaves and aim it towards the sun's path. If the spotlight runs on a removable battery, bring it in and recharge it. Rechargeable models that plug in remain usable all year without depending on the weather.
