An IP67 downlight is protected against dust and against temporary immersion in water: this is the rating to aim for in the shower area and around the bathtub. Elsewhere in the room, an IP44 or IP65 is often enough, provided you keep a single family of fixtures for harmony.

What is an IP67 downlight for a bathroom?

The IP rating is read in two digits. The first, 6, qualifies protection against dust. The second, 7, resistance to temporary immersion. An IP67 downlight therefore withstands steam, splashes and a passing puddle, which an open model cannot.

What does IP67 mean in a bathroom?

In practice, the fixture remains sealed: gasket in place, protective glass, watertight body. In a damp room, this sealing limits condensation on electronic components and the ageing of contacts. This is why this family is found among white recessed downlights and metal downlights, easier to wipe than satin plastic.

Do you need an IP67 or IP65 downlight in a bathroom?

IP65 protects against water jets, IP67 adds resistance to temporary immersion. Under the shower and against the bathtub, IP67 is the safest choice. On the rest of the ceiling, an IP44 or IP65 is suitable if splashes remain limited. Keeping the same rating everywhere simplifies maintenance.

Which IP67 LED downlight to choose for a bathroom?

Four criteria really decide: installation, light source, beam direction and colour temperature. The rest (finish, diameter, accessories) is settled afterwards, once the desired light is decided.

IP67 LED downlight: fixed or adjustable?

An adjustable model pivots and points towards the niche, the basin or a mirror at an angle. A fixed model lights straight down, which suits a ceiling to be treated uniformly. Adjustable LED downlights also serve as an accent point above a built-in bathtub.

Recessed or surface-mounted downlight?

A recessed one sits flush with the ceiling and requires a cut-out at the diameter given by the manufacturer. A surface-mounted model screws on without work, useful on a low ceiling or for a quick renovation. For adjustment, dimmable LED downlights allow you to lower the intensity in the evening without changing the fixture.

Which light colour to choose for a bathroom?

Colour temperature is measured in kelvins. The lower the number, the more the light leans towards orange. Around 2700 K to 3000 K, you get a relaxed atmosphere; towards 4000 K, the rendering becomes more distinct, without a blue cast.

Which colour temperature above the mirror?

The basin area and the mirror require a neutral light, close to 4000 K: the complexion stays accurate and shaving precise. For the bathtub surround and general atmosphere, a warm white around 2700 K rests the eye.

Can you mix several colour temperatures?

Better to avoid it. Two light points of different temperatures in the same room create a visible cold patch on a light wall. If you want variation, keep one temperature for the mirror and change the intensity instead, via dimmable downlights.

Where to install an IP67 downlight in a bathroom?

We reason by exposure to water rather than by surface area. The shower concentrates everything: direct jet, steam, run-off. The rest of the room only receives ambient humidity and a few splashes.

Protection rating according to the bathroom zone
Zone Exposure Suitable rating Type of downlight
Shower and shower screen Direct water jet and steam IP67 Watertight recessed downlight, adjustable towards the tray
Bathtub surround Water splashes IP65 to IP67 Fixed recessed ceiling downlight
Facing the mirror and basin area Humidity and splashes IP44 to IP65 Adjustable downlight, neutral white light
Rest of the ceiling Ambient humidity IP44 minimum Recessed or surface-mounted downlight
Separate toilet Little humidity IP44 Recessed downlight or wall light

Can you install an IP67 downlight directly above the shower?

Yes, that is even its place. The point is installed on the ceiling, directly above the tray or slightly set back, and points towards the floor if the head pivots. Avoid placing it in the direct jet of a fixed low shower head.

How to distribute downlights around the mirror?

Two points on either side of the mirror, at face height, remove the shadow under the chin. A third on the ceiling, in front of the basin area, lights the work surface. Allow three to four sources for the whole room.

How to install and maintain an IP67 downlight?

Installation comes down to three steps: cut the power at the consumer unit, cut to the exact diameter specified by the manufacturer, put the gasket back in place. A pinched or forgotten gasket cancels the protection, even with a fixture marked IP67.

How to fit a recessed downlight in a ceiling?

Draw the template, cut to the indicated diameter, check the available depth above the ceiling (void, insulation). Connect with the power off, clip the springs in, then check that the glass sits flush without forcing.

How to clean a bathroom downlight?

A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough. No abrasive product, no water jet directed at the fixture, no scouring sponge on the glass or metal finish. A limescale deposit is removed with vinegared water, wiped off immediately.

What are the different types of downlights?

Three families depending on installation: recessed, surface-mounted, adjustable. Two families depending on the light source: integrated LED, non-replaceable, or interchangeable bulb with a base. The choice depends mainly on the possibility of drilling and the available height.

Types of downlights and available light sources
Type Light source Maintenance Use in a bathroom
Fixed recessed downlight Integrated LED or GU10 base Replaceable bulb depending on model Ceiling and wet areas, in IP67
Adjustable downlight Integrated LED or GU10 base Direction to adjust Mirror, niche, accent point
Surface-mounted downlight Integrated LED Accessible, no cut-out Low ceiling or installation without work
Dimmable downlight Dimmable LED Wall control or remote control depending on model Bathroom and hallway, adjustable atmosphere

LED downlight and GU10 bulb downlight: which to choose?

Integrated LED cannot be replaced, but it lasts and remains slim. The GU10 base, or GU5.3 in very low voltage, lets you change the source and its temperature later. Black LED downlights exist in both formats.

Adjustable downlight: for what use?

It is used to move the light without touching the wiring: lighting a niche, highlighting a surface, clearing a mirror. For a bare ceiling, a fixed model costs less and gives a more regular rendering. See modern style downlights for discreet lines.

And in other rooms: toilet, dining room, kitchen?

The principles transpose: a dedicated point for the toilet, a light above the table, downlights aligned in circulation areas. The protection rating, however, drops as soon as you leave the damp room.

Which fixture to choose for a toilet?

A ceiling point is enough in most cases, in neutral white to remain legible. A discreet recessed downlight or a wall light is suitable. In a windowless and narrow toilet, prefer homogeneous light to downlights for the entrance or hallway lighting if it extends a passage.

How to think about a decor for a modern kitchen?

In a decor for a modern kitchen, recessed downlights aligned above the work surface extend the line of the room and remove cast shadows. Keep a separate ambient point for the table. Kitchen specialists and LED downlights for the living room follow the same logic of multiple sources.

For other rooms, the logic remains the same: downlights for the bedroom, downlights for the staircase, downlights for the office, each with its own height and intensity.

Can a pendant or a chandelier replace downlights?

In a bathroom, an IP44 pendant is suitable above the washbasin, outside the shower volume. In the wet volume, it does not replace an IP65 or IP67 downlight. Elsewhere, the two families complement each other rather than oppose.

Is an IP44 bathroom pendant suitable above the washbasin?

Yes, provided it stays away from the jet and the bathtub. It brings downward light onto the basin area and a real object into the room. For a coherent look, find it in our universe of light fixtures.

Do you need a large chandelier for a high ceiling?

A high ceiling calls for an adjustable pendant fixture, lowered to stay close to the eye. Above a table, the usual height is around 75 to 85 cm from the surface. Designer LED downlights can complement the lighting without competing with the chandelier.

To choose a diameter, first measure the largest dimension of your basin area or your table: it is this measurement that decides the size of the fixture. Then compare white downlights and white LED downlights according to the shade of your ceiling, then browse all ceiling lights, pendants and downlights to compose the whole room.

Frequently asked questions

What does IP67 mean in a bathroom?

IP67 corresponds to two protections: 6 against dust and 7 against temporary immersion in water. In a bathroom, this rating mainly concerns downlights placed in the shower area, where splashes and condensation are strongest.

Do you need IP65 or IP67 downlights in a bathroom?

IP65 protects against water jets, IP67 adds resistance to temporary immersion. In the shower and around the bathtub, IP67 is the safest choice. Elsewhere in the room, an IP44 or IP65 may be enough if splashes remain limited.

Which downlight colour in a bathroom?

First choose the colour temperature of the light source: warm white for the atmosphere, neutral white for the mirror. The colour of the finish, white or black, is decided afterwards, according to the shade of the ceiling and the style of the room.

Which fixture to choose for a toilet?

A ceiling light point is generally enough, in neutral white to remain legible. A discreet recessed downlight or a wall light is suitable. If the room is small and windowless, favour homogeneous light rather than a directed beam.

How to choose a dining room chandelier?

A dining room chandelier is chosen first by its height above the table and its diameter, proportioned to the surface, then by its light. For a large chandelier under a high ceiling, check the suspension length and the possibility of adjusting the intensity.
