To choose ceiling spotlights, start from the room before looking at the product page: an aluminium tube above the kitchen worktop, a regular line in a hallway, an ultra-slim model in the living room. The selection brings together spotlights with GU10 bulbs and models with integrated LED, in IP20 for dry rooms and IP44 for the bathroom.
How do you choose ceiling spotlights according to the room?
The choice is made first by room: in the kitchen, the spotlight lights the worktop; in the living room, it serves as accent lighting; in a hallway, an entrance or a dressing room, it provides clear, regular passage lighting. The aluminium tube models, in white or black, cover these uses with an IP20 rating.
Kitchen ceiling spotlights
In the kitchen, the spotlight works: it must cast clear light on the cutting area without throwing the shadow of your hands. A narrow tube placed vertically above the worktop, about forty centimetres from the wall, lights the action rather than the floor. Most models in the selection are suitable here, starting with those in our selection of spotlights designed for the kitchen.
Living room ceiling spotlights
In the living room, a spotlight does not replace a pendant: it highlights a section of wall, a piece of furniture, a bookshelf. Light that is too harsh tires the eyes in the evening, an adjustable or dimmable model corrects this. See also the brightness settings to lower the mood after dinner.
Hallway and entrance ceiling spotlights
In a hallway, regularity is what matters: same model, same spacing, from start to finish. At the entrance, a short tube above the sideboard gives a crisp point. Round formats and contemporary, clean lines fit in without visually cluttering the space.
How should ceiling spotlights be arranged in a living room?
In a living room, spotlights are aligned on living zones rather than on the whole room: a line along the sofa, a square above the table, a few points towards dark corners. The spacing depends on the spotlight format and the area to cover, not on a fixed number.
Living room ceiling spotlight layout
The layout of ceiling spotlights in the living room follows the furniture, never a theoretical plan. First trace the axis of the sofa, then that of the coffee table, then place a point every 80 cm to 1 m along these axes. A large room benefits from combining a spotlight rail for large rooms with two isolated points near the corners.
Modern living room ceiling spotlights
A modern living room often needs little: three or four ultra-slim spotlights, aligned, and indirect light on the walls. The 10 W ultra-slim LED spotlight is no more than 4.5 cm high, which keeps the ceiling smooth. To go further, browse the LED spotlights with refined design.
What distance should there be between two ceiling spotlights?
There is no single spacing: the narrower the spotlight, the closer together they must be to avoid shadow zones. Keep the same distance all along a hallway and space them further apart in the living room. Along a wall, offset the spotlight so the light falls without creating a patch.
Ceiling spotlight distance
Start from the beam, not the surface: a narrow spotlight requires tight spacing, a wide spotlight allows more space between two points. On a low ceiling, reduce the power rather than the number of spotlights, illuminance rises quickly near the floor. Recessed LED models make these tight alignments easier.
Distance between the spotlight and the wall
A spotlight stuck to the wall draws an unattractive half-circle of light. Allow at least 30 cm from the partition, more if the ceiling is high, to obtain clean wall lighting. On a wall to be highlighted, a spotlight able to direct the beam where you want is better than a fixed model.
LED ceiling lighting: which light temperature should you choose?
The selection offers two moods: warm white, from 2700 to 3500 K, for a living room, a bedroom or a dining area; neutral white, from 3500 to 4500 K, crisper, for a kitchen, a hallway or a dressing room. On a GU10 model, the chosen bulb sets this temperature.
Warm white 2700 to 3500 K
Warm white leans towards yellow and relaxes a room in the evening. It is reserved for areas where you settle in: living room, dining area, bedroom. The Neo ultra-slim spotlight is supplied in this temperature, a reason to prefer it when the living room is used after nightfall.
Neutral white 3500 to 4500 K
Neutral white stays whiter, without a marked blue tint. It suits passage and work rooms: kitchen, hallway, dressing room, entrance, where colours need to be distinguished effortlessly. The LED spotlight with wood finish lights in this range.
Ceiling spotlight GU10 or integrated LED: what is the difference?
A GU10 spotlight takes a bulb that you choose and replace, with maximum wattages of 8, 15, 25 or 50 W depending on the model. An integrated LED spotlight comes with its source: 9, 10 or 12 W in the selection. The first can be repaired, the second is installed only once.
GU10 ceiling spotlights
GU10 keeps control over the light: you decide the temperature and you change the bulb when it weakens. It is the most common cap here, and the only one that accepts a dimmable bulb. Discover the spotlights with GU10 bulb to keep that choice open.
LED ceiling spotlights
Integrated LED simplifies things: nothing to buy, nothing to screw in, a uniform result from the moment it is connected. It suits long alignments where identical light is wanted everywhere. Browse the integrated LED models and the discreet white finishes.
Bathroom ceiling spotlights: which protection rating should you choose?
In a damp room, choose a spotlight with a suitable protection rating, such as IP44, available in the selection. IP20 models, by far the most common, remain reserved for dry rooms: kitchen, hallway, living room, entrance and dressing room. Check that the rating is clearly stated on the product page.
IP44 ceiling spotlights
IP44 protects against water splashes, which covers the humidity of a bathroom, a shower room or a utility room. It is installed above the washbasin or in the shower zone depending on the distance to water. Find these references in the spotlights for damp rooms and bathrooms.
IP20 ceiling spotlights: where to install them
IP20 has nothing to fear in a dry room and covers the vast majority of needs: kitchen, hallway, living room, entrance, dressing room. There is no point over-protecting a living room ceiling, you would pay for a rating that serves no purpose. The models recessed into the ceiling exist in both ratings.
Which spotlight colour for a white ceiling: white, black or gold?
On a white ceiling, a white spotlight blends in and leaves only the light visible; a black, gold or silver spotlight becomes a deliberate graphic detail. The selection also offers taupe, pink and wood, to match the fixture to the furniture or the joinery rather than to the ceiling.
Black ceiling spotlights
Black draws a crisp dot on a light ceiling and matches dark joinery, dark splashbacks, graphic kitchens. The 12 cm black tube spotlight measures 5.8 cm on each side, a minimal footprint for a strong contrast. See the more graphic black versions.
White ceiling spotlights
White erases the fixture: the ceiling remains a continuous surface, only the light counts. It is the default choice on a ceiling painted white or in a very light tone, and it ages without becoming tiresome. Compare the discreet white finishes before settling on your shade.
How do you light a room with a high ceiling, 4 m from floor to ceiling?
When the ceiling height reaches 4 m, a spotlight set on the ceiling lights the room without reaching faces. A pendant, a chandelier or a multi-arm light brings the light point down to the right height, while spotlights handle the mood and passage zones.
Lighting for a 4 m ceiling height
At this height, useful light must come down: a source suspended about 2 m from the floor lights faces, a source left at 4 m only lights empty space. So keep a low fixture for the table, and reserve the ceiling for circulation. The Tuka L elongated spotlight, with its 55 cm, already brings the light down by a few tens of centimetres.
Large chandelier or XXL pendant for a high ceiling
A chandelier or XXL pendant solves the question of scale: a generous volume holds the height without crushing the room. Spotlights complete the periphery, without competing with the centrepiece. Look at all the home lighting solutions to match the whole.
How do you install and care for a ceiling spotlight?
Installation always starts by switching off the power, then identifying the wires and testing before final fixing. A GU10 model also requires fitting the bulb; an integrated LED model works as soon as it is connected. For care, dust dry, without abrasive products on acrylic or glass.
Installing a ceiling spotlight
Switch off the circuit breaker, identify live, neutral and earth, then do a light test before screwing the support to the ceiling. This last step avoids having to take it down again if a wire is loose. The LED spotlight with wood finish, with its 6.4 cm height and supplied source, connects directly.
Caring for and dusting a spotlight
A soft, dry cloth is enough on the diffuser; acrylic and glass scratch quickly with an abrasive product. On a GU10 model, unplug before removing the bulb to avoid any contact with the pins. The rest of the spotlight range follows the same steps.

One dimension often decides the rest: under 5 cm in height, the spotlight disappears into a low ceiling and becomes the right choice for renovation. Above 25 cm, you are looking at a stem model, which brings the light down without taking up ceiling space. Take the actual height of your room before deciding, then check the cap on the product page. With that guide in place, all that remains is choosing the finish and the rating. The G9 cap, for its part, concerns only a minority of small compact models in the selection.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a spotlight and a floodlight?
A ceiling spotlight concentrates light on a precise area and stays discreet once installed. A floodlight lights a wider surface, often an entire wall or an outdoor space. The choice depends on the area to cover and the desired effect, not on the size of the fixture.
Recessed or surface-mounted ceiling spotlight?
A recessed spotlight sits flush in the ceiling and leaves the surface flat, which suits low ceilings and rooms where the fixture should be erased. A surface-mounted spotlight is fixed directly and is easier to remove, which helps on a concrete ceiling or in renovation.
What is an adjustable ceiling spotlight for?
An adjustable spotlight lets you direct the beam towards a wall, a shelf or a worktop without moving the fixture. It is used when the area to be lit is not directly under the spotlight: highlighting a painting, a piece of furniture or a dark corner.
Can a LED ceiling spotlight be dimmable?
It depends on the source. A spotlight with a GU10 cap accepts a dimmable bulb and is then controlled from a suitable switch. A model with integrated LED can only be dimmed if the module is designed for it. Check this point on the product page before buying, it cannot be corrected after installation.
Which fixture should you choose for a high ceiling: chandelier, pendant or multi-arm light?
With a ceiling height of 4 m, light set on the ceiling no longer reaches faces. A pendant, a large chandelier or a multi-arm light brings the light point down to table height, and ceiling spotlights complete the mood and circulation. The two combine.
