Spot the two flat pin socket and measure the space available under the shade: that is what decides whether a capsule fits. These small LED light bulbs are mainly used in multi-point light fittings, chandeliers, ceiling lights, wall lights and spotlights, where a classic bulb will not fit.
What is a G9 LED light bulb and where to use it?
In a chandelier, each capsule adds a soft point of light; on a ceiling light, it lights the room without glare; in a hallway, it keeps the passage readable. The rest is technical, and it comes down to three markers: shape, base, protection rating.
A G9 pin capsule for compact light fittings
The G9 is a base with two parallel flat pins, mounted on a compact glass or plastic capsule that clips into a dedicated socket. Do not confuse it with G4, whose pins are closer together and whose capsule is more miniature, nor with E14, a small screw base that unscrews. All the G9 LED light bulbs in this selection are LED, with an IP20 protection rating, so reserved for dry rooms. G4 capsules and other small bases are chosen on the same principle: you start from the fitting's socket, not from the bulb.
Which rooms to install a G9 bulb in?
The collection covers the living room, bedroom, kitchen, dining room and hallway. These capsules are also at home in all the light fittings in the house equipped with G9 sockets: entrance wall light, landing ceiling light, recessed spotlights. If you are still looking for the fixture, start with a light fitting whose socket matches your bulbs and rely on the socket description, never on the photo alone.
What is the size of a G9 LED light bulb?
Allow between 1.5 and 1.8 cm across for 4.9 to 5.8 cm high depending on the models in the collection, and 4.8 cm by 1.5 cm for the multi-base reference that also accepts E14 and G4. The base dictates the width, the height varies: it is the height that blocks the fitting.
The dimensions of a G9 capsule in centimetres
These measurements are those taken on the products, and they are enough to settle a remote purchase.
| Measured dimensions | Format | Clearance under the shade |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 x 1.5 x 4.9 cm (w x d x h) | Short capsule | Fits most shallow shades |
| 1.8 x 1.8 x 5 cm | Standard capsule | Common formats of G9 socket fittings |
| 1.8 x 1.8 x 5.8 cm | Elongated capsule | Check the available height |
| 4.8 x 1.5 cm (h x w) | Thin and tall capsule | Open socket required |
Why height matters more than diameter
The width is dictated by the G9 base: all the capsules look alike on this point. The height, however, decides. The 3W G9 LED bulb, at 4.9 cm, slips under a tight shade, whereas the 4.5W G9 LED bulb and its 5.8 cm needs a little air. Measure the space between the socket and the bottom of the shade before ordering, it avoids a return trip. For screw sockets, look instead at E14 small screw base bulbs.
Warm white, neutral white or cool white: which colour temperature to choose?
Choose the light temperature first, it changes everything else: warm white, from 2700 to 3500 K, gives a yellow-orange evening light; neutral white, from 3500 to 4500 K, stays close to daylight; cool white, from 4500 to 6500 K, contrasts more sharply.
Warm white G9 LED light bulbs: the evening light
This is the most common temperature in this selection. It suits the living room, bedroom, dining room and hallway, where you want to settle down. The 2700K bulbs for a warm light are the most enveloping version, while the 3000K models, between warm and neutral, keep a soft base with a little more sharpness. The 2 warm white G9 bulbs with a cosy glow illustrate this rendering well in a multi-socket fitting.
4000K G9 LED light bulbs: neutral white for the kitchen
Around 4000 K, the light stays natural without turning blue: it is the right register for the kitchen and worktops, where you chop and read. The 4.5 W G9 4000K bulb covers this temperature. Cool white, beyond that, is best kept for frank lighting, in a kitchen or garage, and pairs poorly with a room for rest.
| Temperature | Kelvin range | Rendering in the room | Rooms in the collection |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warm white | 2700 - 3500 K | Yellow-orange light, evening atmosphere | Living room, bedroom, dining room, hallway |
| Neutral white | 3500 - 4500 K | Natural white, close to daylight | Kitchen, living room, hallway |
| Cool white | 4500 - 6500 K | Frank white, marked contrast | Kitchen, living room |
How to choose the wattage of a G9 LED light bulb?
Start from the number of light points, not from the size of the room. The wattages available in the collection range from 2 W to 7 W, including 2.9 W, 3 W, 3.5 W, 4.5 W and 5 W. A wall light or a hallway is fine with 2 to 3 W, a living room ceiling light or a kitchen calls for 4.5 W and more.
5W G9 LED light bulbs: for which fitting?
Above 4.5 W, you light a whole room or a work area. A living room ceiling light, a kitchen island or a large hallway handles this wattage without a problem. On a multi-socket fitting, it is better to spread it out: three 3 W capsules give a more even light than a single strong source in the centre, which creates a patch on the ceiling and leaves the corners dark.
2 W, 3 W or 4.5 W: the supplementary G9 bulb
A wall light often holds only one capsule, and it lights at eye level. Stay modest: the 2 W and 3 W are enough for a hallway, a headboard or supplementary lighting. The G9 socket accepts all these values, on one condition: stay within the wattage limit indicated by the fitting itself.
Dimmable G9 LED light bulbs: how to recognise a dimmable bulb?
A G9 bulb is called dimmable when it is designed to be controlled by a dimmer. This is the case for some of the models in the collection, including the white Lucide and Trio capsules. Without a dimmer on the wall, it lights normally, like any other bulb.
What a dimmer changes on a G9 bulb
A dimmer lets you go from ambient light in the evening to frank lighting for reading, without changing the bulb or multiplying the fittings. It is useful in the living room as well as in a bedroom, and it remains a comfort, not an obligation. Not all dimmer-compatible bulbs are equal: the mention appears in the description of each product, and it is the only reliable source.
Check compatibility with the fitting and the dimmer
Two conditions, not one. The bulb must be designed for dimming, and the wall dimmer must be designed to control LEDs. An old dimmer, intended for filament bulbs, may behave poorly with a recent capsule. Our compatible capsules, such as the white 3 W Lucide G9 capsule, also work without a dimmer. For other bases, see the dimmable E14 bulbs.
How to replace a G9 bulb with an LED?
Switch off the power at the circuit breaker, let the old bulb cool, then pull the capsule out of its socket by its two pins. Present the LED on the same axis and push in until contact. No transformer to add: the capsule connects directly to the 220-240 V mains.
Removing and clipping a G9 bulb without forcing
The movement is done with two fingers, without a tool. Never pull on the glass, take the pins or the base. If the capsule resists, it is often because the pins are slightly spread or the socket is hot: wait. When refitting, check that the new capsule keeps the same clearance under the shade, otherwise it will touch the cover. The 220 V format precisely avoids the separate power supply box that complicates replacement.
Why a G9 LED bulb needs no transformer
The conversion electronics are built into the base. You are therefore replacing a bulb, not an installation. Glass bulbs fit exactly like the others; only the thickness of the glass slightly changes the total height. On an old fitting, take the opportunity to check the condition of the sockets, tight or oxidised after years of service.
Which G9 LED light bulb for a ceiling light, a chandelier or a wall light?
A ceiling light lights the whole room, a chandelier spreads the light over several points, a wall light lights at eye level. Hence three different settings: warm or neutral white in the living room, moderate wattage on a wall light to avoid glare, and several low-wattage capsules rather than a single very strong source.
G9 bulb for LED ceiling light and ceiling lighting
On a ceiling light, the light starts from the top and comes down: it is the position where you can go up in wattage without discomfort. Aim for 4.5 to 5 W per socket, in warm white for a living room or in neutral white if the room also serves as an office. The bulbs designed for the living room cover both temperatures. For a bedroom, prefer a lower intensity and a warm white, as in the bulbs for the bedroom.
LED chandelier and wall light: which wattage to aim for?
A chandelier often lines up several sockets: spread the light with 3 W capsules rather than loading a single one at 7 W. A wall light, however, has only one point: stay around 3 to 4.5 W and check the height available under the shade, because 5.8 cm capsules do not fit everywhere. If your fitting is screw-based, look at the E27 large base LED bulbs. For recessed spotlights, the beam angle matters as much as the wattage.

Once the socket and the height are checked, the white 3.5 W Lucide G9 capsule covers most of the compact fittings in the house.
How to match G9 bulbs in the same room?
Keep a single light temperature per room, otherwise the eye immediately spots the difference between two light points. The second rule concerns the colour of the capsule, visible as soon as no shade hides it. In a fitting with exposed sockets, harmony is as visible as the light.
White, orange or clear colour: what rendering?
White, the majority in the collection, diffuses an even light and fades behind a shade. Clear lets you see the components and makes the capsule an element of the fitting. Amber and orange warm the perceived tint. The white colour bulbs remain the safest choice for a classic fitting, the modern style bulbs for a room with clean lines.
Can you mix several light temperatures?
In the same room, no: two neighbouring temperatures already produce an impression of disorder. The rule has one useful exception, a hallway or a worktop lit cooler than the rest of the living room, provided the two zones remain separated by a partition or a door. Note the reference of your capsules before completing a fitting, it avoids buying a similar temperature again. The full range of LED bulbs lets you cross-check the markers.
To finish, browse the LED bulb range for all bases and compare base, temperature and colour before adding a capsule to your basket.
Frequently asked questions about G9 LED light bulbs
What is the size of LED bulbs?
The G9 capsules in this selection measure about 1.5 cm across for 4.9 cm high on one model, 1.8 cm across for 5 to 5.8 cm high on the others, and 4.8 cm by 1.5 cm for a multi-base reference. Check the height available under the shade before choosing.
How to replace a G9 bulb with an LED?
Switch off the power, let the old bulb cool, then pull the capsule out of its socket by its two pins. Present the new G9 LED bulb on the same axis and push in until contact. These capsules connect directly to the installation, with no transformer to add.
Which G9 LED light bulb to choose for a wall light?
A wall light often holds only one capsule: aim for a warm white for ambient light and a moderate wattage, 3 to 4.5 W, to limit glare at eye level. Check the height of the shade, 5.8 cm capsules do not fit everywhere.
Are there dimmable G9 LED light bulbs?
Yes: some of the models in the collection are stated as dimmer-compatible, in particular the white Lucide and Trio capsules. The dimmer on the wall must also be designed to control LEDs. If your installation is not dimmable, the bulb lights normally, like a classic bulb.
How to know if my fitting accepts a G9 LED bulb?
Look at the socket: two parallel slots correspond to the G9 base, a fine thread to E14 and closer pins to G4. The G9 bulbs in the collection are IP20, so reserved for dry rooms. Also check the height available under the shade.
