Linen pendant light: the soft light that dresses a room

What kind of light does a linen pendant give in a room?

Linen diffuses a subdued light, with no harsh reflection and no strong halo on the ceiling. It lights widely around the shade rather than straight down. The room stays readable without glare, provided you choose a 2700 K bulb and accept ambient lighting, not a workspace.

Linen, rattan, bamboo, synthetic fabric: what changes above a table

Linen Rattan Bamboo Synthetic fabric
Light rendering Subdued, no harsh reflection Filtered, drawn shadows Warm, visible weave More opaque, flatter light
Style it suits Scandinavian, japandi, contemporary Bohemian, holiday home feel Natural, conservatory Versatile, more conventional
Room where it excels Living room, bedroom, dining room Living room and hallway Kitchen and conservatory Corridor, child's room
Routine care Dry dusting, soft brush Duster or air blower Dry cloth Damp cloth possible
Preferred bulb E27 or integrated LED, 2700 K E27, 2700 K E14 or E27, 2700 K Integrated LED
Moisture resistance Low: avoid in damp rooms Medium Low Varies with the lining

Linen subdues, rattan filters, bamboo cuts. Each natural material casts a different shadow on the wall and the tabletop, and the bamboo pendant draws patterns that linen never produces.

Natural, white or beige linen pendant: what the colour changes when lit

An ecru linen warms the light, a white linen makes it more neutral. The fabric filters the beam before it reaches the room, as much as the bulb temperature does. On a fabric light, this thickness matters more than the diameter.

  • Ecru or natural: the light comes out more honey-toned, the wall turns yellow late in the evening.
  • White: a more neutral rendering, the room looks brighter at the same power.
  • Beige: between the two, it forgives a slightly too cool bulb.
  • Dark shade: absorbs part of the output, best kept for rooms that are already bright.

If you are unsure, a beige shade remains the most forgiving. A full living room project is planned upstream with our lighting project for a living room, heights and wattages included.

Oval or round linen pendant: the shape decides the diffusion

An oval or cylindrical shape sends the light down towards the surface, a round shape sends it out to the sides. That is the first criterion to settle, before colour and diameter.

  • Oval or cylinder: directed beam, placed above a table.
  • Round or globe: 360° diffusion, for an open corner.
  • Large natural pendant: needs clearance, never against a wall.

To see the difference with a crystal chandelier, our article on chandelier or pendant details both set-ups.

At what height should a linen pendant hang above a table?

Allow 75 cm between the bottom of the shade and the top of a 75 cm table, roughly 1.50 m from the floor. Over an island or a counter, go down to 85 cm above the surface. A wide shade open towards the bottom gains another 5 cm.

The drop above a dining table

Too high, the pendant no longer lights the meal. Too low, it gets in the way of guests' sightlines. The drop is set by the height of the people, not by the ceiling height. Our selection of dining room shades gives the diameter suited to the number of place settings.

Mounting surface Bottom of the shade above the surface Reference from the floor
Dining table (75 cm) 75 cm about 1.50 m
Island or counter (90 cm) 85 to 90 cm about 1.75 m
Living room coffee table 1.90 m and above clear standing passage

Two pendants above an island are placed 60 cm apart to stay readable. An open kitchen often calls for this double setting, which we plan in a kitchen and dining room lighting project.

And under a 4 to 5 metre ceiling?

The 75 cm rule does not change, it is the cable that gets longer. Under 4 m, a fixed pendant leaves a visual gap above the shade. A height-adjustable pendant lets you bring the whole thing back down without changing model.

  • Long cable: keep the drop at 75 cm, the rest is lost in the height.
  • Discreet canopy: essential when the ceiling stays visible.
  • Counterweight or reel: handy above a table that moves.

In which room will your linen pendant hang?

Which bulb should go in a linen pendant?

Choose an E27 LED of 6 to 8 W at 2700 K, the equivalent of an old 60 W. Linen absorbs part of the output: a bulb that is too weak makes the shade look dull. Stay under 10 W, heat eventually marks the fabric.

E27 socket or integrated LED: what linen can take

The E27 socket lets you replace the bulb when it ages or when you dislike the tint. An integrated LED cannot be replaced, but it heats less and avoids wattage mistakes. Across a survey of 249 references in our catalogue on 24 October 2026, 24% state an E27 socket and 26% an integrated LED.

  • E27: interchangeable, ideal for testing two temperatures.
  • Integrated LED: constant output, no bulb to buy again.
  • G9: reserved for small volumes, low diffusion.
  • Dimmer: check it, linen does not compensate for flicker.

A stock of E27 bulbs covers most of the suspended set-ups in the catalogue.

The colour temperature that wakes up linen

At 2700 K, linen takes on an amber tint that warms a room in the evening. At 3000 K, the rendering stays warm without turning yellow. Around 4000 K, the fibre loses its relief and the fabric looks grey.

  • 2700 K: living room, dining room, bedroom.
  • 3000 K: open kitchen, hallway.
  • 4000 K and above: avoid on an ecru shade.

A pack of 2700K E27 bulbs settles the question once and for all.

If two diameters are in the balance for the same table, the contact page lets you send us your measurements before confirming.

Six checks before confirming a linen pendant

  • The shade diameter fits within a third of the table width
  • The drop leaves at least 75 cm between the bottom of the shade and the surface
  • The stated socket matches the bulb you already have (E27, E14 or integrated LED)
  • The fabric is lined or set over a diffuser, otherwise the bulb shows through
  • The protection rating matches the room: IP20 for a living room, never for a bathroom
  • The total weight is compatible with your ceiling fixing point

How do you care for a wrinkled or wabi sabi linen pendant?

Dust dry every three to four weeks with a duster or the brush nozzle of the vacuum cleaner, on minimum power. Wrinkled linen relaxes with steam, held 20 cm away, never with an iron. A stain is dabbed with warm soapy water, without rubbing.

Dusting without marking the fabric

Dust settles in the folds and greys the fibre. A regular pass is enough to keep the original tint. Our full method for cleaning a fabric lampshade applies to linen as it is.

  • Duster: on the outside, from top to bottom.
  • Vacuum cleaner: soft brush, minimum power.
  • Water: never on a socket, unplug first.
  • Drying: in the open air, away from a direct heat source.

When linen turns yellow: what can be fixed and what cannot

A tint yellowed by too powerful a bulb cannot be fixed. A grey film caused by dust or smoke does come off with gentle cleaning. In our survey of 249 references on 24 October 2026, 94% state a protection rating of IP20: a linen pendant stays out of bathrooms and damp rooms. Moisture makes the fibre buckle before staining it, and a living room lampshade keeps its shape in a dry, ventilated room.

The selection is reviewed by buyers, verifiable on the Designix Google listing. A dated catalogue figure is worth more than a promise: mounting references, socket and protection rating can be read on every product page.

Frequently asked questions about the linen pendant

What is the difference between a chandelier and a linen pendant?
A chandelier is a light with several light points, often in metal or crystal, designed to be seen switched on. A linen pendant has a single source, hidden by a fabric shade: it lights from below and through the material, and is chosen first for the quality of its light.
Does a linen pendant give enough light to read?
Above a table, yes, provided you use a bulb suited to the volume of the shade and line the fabric with a diffuser. To read seated, count instead on a reading lamp or an adjustable wall light: linen is made for atmosphere, not for task lighting.
Natural linen pendant or white linen pendant: which to choose?
Natural linen leans towards ecru and warms a 2700 K bulb even more, which suits rooms for rest. White linen lets more light through and keeps the room crisper: it holds up better in a hallway or on a coloured wall, and turns yellow less visibly.
Can a linen pendant go in a kitchen or a bathroom?
In a bathroom, no: in a survey of 249 references in our catalogue on 24 October 2026, 94% state an IP20 rating, so no protection against moisture. In a kitchen, keep it away from cooking and steam zones, or choose a model whose fabric can be dusted dry.
How do you clean a wrinkled linen pendant?
Dry, with a soft brush or a duster, without rubbing the weave. Wrinkled linen is reshaped with steam at a distance, never with an iron pressed on it. A greasy stain is treated as a last resort, and the yellowing of an old shade is rarely corrected without replacing the fabric.
