Count on three light points: a ceiling light in the centre for general light, a bathroom wall light in line with the mirror for the face, and a spot directed towards the shower or the vanity top. In this selection, bathroom lights are mainly made of metal, glass or acrylic, in black, white or gold, and the choice then comes down to the area to be lit and the ingress protection rating.
Which type of light for a bathroom?
Three families are enough: a bathroom wall light or a strip above the mirror, a ceiling light in the centre for general light, one or two adjustable or recessed spots for specific areas. The choice depends on the area to be lit, the available ingress protection rating and the bulb socket.
Wall light, ceiling light or spot: what each family is for
The wall light places light at face height, in line with the mirror or the vanity top. The ceiling light illuminates the whole room and suits spaces where the wall is already taken up by bathroom furniture or a basin. The adjustable spot and the recessed spot direct the beam towards a point: a niche, the shower tray, a dark corner. The three families share the same materials here, metal and aluminium first, then glass, iron and acrylic, with black, gold, white or silver finishes.
How many light points to plan according to available space
In a short room, a flat ceiling light and a wall light are enough. Beyond ten square metres, with two basins or a separate shower, add a third point above the wet area. The principle remains the same: a general source, a source in line with the mirror, a supplementary source. For wall-mounted models only, browse the wall-mounted models, and for all families, all our lights.
| Type of light | Area to be lit | Socket used | Ingress protection | Available finishes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wall light | Above or beside the mirror | G4, GU10, E14, E27, integrated LED | IP20, IP44, IP45 | Black, gold, white, silver, beige |
| Ceiling light | Centre of the room, general lighting | Integrated LED | IP20 | Black, white |
| Adjustable spot | Sink, niche, specific point | GU10 | IP20 | Black |
| Recessed spot | Ceiling above the tray or shower | GU10 | IP44 | Silver |
What is the best lighting for a bathroom?
The best lighting combines several sources rather than one: general light on the ceiling, frontal or side lighting in front of the mirror to avoid shadows on the face, and a supplementary light directed towards the shower or bath. In this selection, colour temperatures range from warm white to cool white, with a majority of models in warm white.
One or several sources: what it changes
A single source on the ceiling leaves the face in shadow as soon as you lean towards the mirror. Two sources, one general and one in front of the mirror, eliminate these dark areas. The third, more discreet, serves to highlight a volume or to be useful near the shower. For rooms where the ceiling remains bare, a flat LED light is often enough, and a pendant light takes over when height allows.
Keeping the same light colour from one point to another
Sources with different temperatures in the same room give an uneven result: one area looks yellow, the other bluish. The simplest is to stay in the same family, warm white everywhere for example, and reserve neutral white for the mirror alone if you apply make-up or shave there. The modern lights and contemporary pieces in the selection lend themselves well to this discreet mix.
Bathroom wall light mirror: how to light the sink?
Above the sink, a bathroom wall light placed above the mirror or two wall lights on either side give shadow-free light on the face. The models in this selection are made of metal, glass, acrylic or aluminium, in short formats or horizontal strips, with black, white or gold finishes.
Wall light above the mirror or double wall light
A wide mirror calls for a horizontal strip, placed a few centimetres above the top edge, directed downwards. A narrow, tall mirror prefers two short wall lights on each side, at eye level. The length of the light follows that of the mirror: slightly shorter or the same width, never a third shorter. The long IP44 wall light illustrates the strip format, and for a bathroom mirror light or a simple light return, the dimmable circle wall light is installed at 30 to 100 cm.
Modern bathroom wall light for a small room
In a narrow room, a flat ceiling light or a strip above the mirror lights without cluttering. Short formats and thin aluminium wall lights find their place above a vanity unit, even with a low ceiling. The IP45 ball wall light, in metal, glass and iron, fits within 31.5 cm by 12 cm, and the Nival LED ceiling light with a diameter of 28 cm stays 6 cm from the ceiling. The ball lights and glass lights give the same lightness.
Bathroom wall light ceiling or wall: which mounting to choose?
The ceiling lights the whole room, the wall places light at useful height in line with the mirror or the vanity top. This selection mixes wall lights, ceiling lights and recessed spots, installed alone or combined, to cover general lighting as well as specific areas.
Bathroom wall light ceiling
Placed in the centre, it covers the entire room and requires little maintenance: a flat surface, a wipe with a cloth. Its limit lies elsewhere, in the shadow it casts on the face facing the mirror. Choose it flat enough if the ceiling is low, and with integrated LED to avoid having to change a bulb at height. White lights blend into a light ceiling, black finishes stand out more.
Bathroom wall light wall
Fixed to the wall, it lights where you are, without crossing the room. Its mounting height is set at eye level, around 1.80 m for a mirror-axis wall light, a little higher if the strip lights downwards. The formats in the selection range from 9.5 cm for the shortest to 100 cm for the longest. Existing wiring often guides the decision: a supply near the mirror points towards a bathroom wall light, a central supply towards a ceiling light. To make a pendant light, you need a socket, a cable and a shade suited to the room, or you can take inspiration from the pendant models in the collection.
IP20, IP44 or IP45: which protection to choose in a bathroom?
The ingress protection rating indicates resistance to dust and water splashes. In this selection, most models are IP20, a few wall lights and spots are IP44 or IP45. Near a water point or in an area exposed to splashes, it is better to choose an IP44 or IP45 model when one exists in the range.
Where water can splash, which models to favour
Around the tray, shower and sink, splashes are frequent: an IP44 or IP45 holds up better over time than an IP20. Further from the water point, above a unit or in line with the mirror, IP20 is enough, and it opens access to decorative wall lights, thinner and often more varied. The IP45 ball wall light and the long IP44 wall light cover the two risk areas of the room.
Why a recessed spot is not necessarily IP44
The rating depends on the specific model, not the family. A recessed spot can be IP20 or IP44: in the selection, the silver recessed spot is rated IP44, while the round adjustable spot is IP20. So check the product sheet of the intended model, not its type, before placing it above a wet area.
Warm white, neutral white or cool white: which temperature and which socket?
Warm white (2700 to 3500 K) gives a soft light, suited to the sink and the evening; neutral white (3500 to 4500 K) renders colours more accurately in front of the mirror; cool white (4500 to 6500 K) lights brightly. For sockets, the selection offers G4, E14, E27, GU10 and integrated LED modules.
Warm, neutral or cool white depending on use
Warm white largely dominates the selection, which suits a room used morning and evening. Neutral white, rarer here, is used above a mirror when colour accuracy matters. Cool white suits work areas and spaces where crisp light is sought. Many wall lights accept two, or even all three, provided you choose the bulb accordingly. A bedroom light or living room lighting installed nearby follows the same logic.
E27, G4, GU10 or integrated LED socket: what to plan
A light with integrated LED requires no bulb: nothing to buy again, nothing to match. The others require a separate bulb, to be planned at the time of installation. Several models in the selection accept a dimmer, useful when the same source serves as morning lighting and evening ambience.
| Socket or module | Bulb to plan | Where to find it in the selection |
|---|---|---|
| G4 | Yes, separate bulb | Thin wall lights, decorative lights |
| E14 | Yes, separate bulb | Decorative wall lights |
| E27 | Yes, separate bulb | Wall lights and lights with shades |
| GU10 | Yes, separate bulb | Adjustable and recessed spots |
| Integrated LED | No, integrated LED module | Ceiling lights, strips and flat wall lights |
How to install and maintain a bathroom light?
Installation is prepared before drilling: locate the electrical supply, switch off the power, fix the bracket at the desired level then connect. Depending on the model, the light connects to a cable outlet, a plug or a wall switch. Cleaning is done with a soft cloth, without abrasive product, on a switched-off surface.
Bathroom wall light with plug or with switch
Some models connect directly to a cable outlet behind the partition, others work via a plug or a wall switch already in place. Before buying, look at the product sheet and the exact location of the electrical supply near the mirror. If the connection is not mastered, a ready-to-install model and an integrated LED avoid any handling of a bulb at height.
Maintenance: glass, metal and acrylic
Glass and acrylic are cleaned with warm water and a microfibre cloth. Metal, especially brass and gold finishes, does not tolerate abrasive products: a dry cloth is enough to restore its shine. Always switch off the power before working. Check the warranty on each product sheet, which allows time to spot a power or fixing fault.
Original light, lighting store and delivery to Lyon
Designix is an online lighting store, with secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and customer service, delivering in particular to Lyon. The most original pieces in the selection, shaped like a ball, a water drop or more unexpected, can dress a bathroom as well as a living room or a hallway.
Original living room light: stepping out of the standard model
A character piece changes a room without work: a monkey-shaped wall light in resin and glass, a gold or silver water drop wall light, a ball wall light in glass and iron. These models are intended for the bathroom as well as the living room, bedroom, hallway or dining room. An original living room light is chosen like an object, then adjusted with the bulb: warmer in a living room, more neutral near a mirror. See also the gold models and metal lights.

Frequently asked questions
Which light for a toilet or WC?
For a toilet, a bathroom wall light or a small ceiling light is enough, placed above or beside the bowl depending on available space. A warm white light remains comfortable in a small volume. This selection offers compact models in metal, black or white, also found in a hallway.
Can a bathroom wall light be installed with a plug or a switch?
It depends on the model: some lights connect to a cable outlet, others work with a plug or a wall switch. Before buying, check the product sheet of the chosen model and the position of the electrical supply near the mirror. Dimmer-compatible models are controlled with a suitable switch.
Which modern bathroom wall light to choose for a small bathroom?
In a small room, a flat ceiling light or an LED strip above the mirror lights without cluttering. Wall lights in metal or acrylic, in short format or medium length, are mounted high on the wall. A white or black finish matches easily with bathroom furniture.
Is a special light needed above the bathroom mirror?
No special model, but a light suited to the area: near the water point, favour the IP44 or IP45 models in the selection; elsewhere, an IP20 model is enough. Shape also matters: horizontal strip for a large mirror, short wall light or double wall light for a narrow, tall mirror.
Can a bathroom wall light be used in the living room?
Yes, several pieces in the selection are intended for the bathroom as well as the living room: ball wall lights, glass wall lights, black or gold models. The result changes depending on the room and the chosen bulb temperature. This allows the lighting of two neighbouring rooms to be matched.
