Count on a pendant lantern above a table, a wall light on a wall and an outdoor model on the facade: three light points are enough to structure a room. The light of a LED lantern filters through an openwork shade or frosted glass, which draws patterns on the walls and softens the beam.
LED lanterns: what light do they give in a room?
The result depends on the shape and material: an openwork shade projects patterns, frosted glass softens the beam. Depending on the model, the bulb remains visible or not, and the intensity is adjusted with a dimmer when the product provides for it, as on the Doran IP44 pendant and the Uriel round pendant, two models in metal and glass with G9 base.
LED lanterns outdoor or indoor: two uses, one same family
The principle remains the same, the envelope changes. Indoors, the lantern is hung or fixed to the wall and seeks warm light; outdoors, it must resist water, hence a protection rating announced from IP44. The Noreia pendant in woven bamboo, in IP54, is placed on a terrace, while the CharmeRétro wall lantern in IP44 dresses a facade. To go further, browse the outdoor LED lanterns.
Why LED changes the look of a lantern
An LED bulb heats little: the rope, linen or bamboo shade does not fear the proximity of the source, which allows closed shapes. It also allows choosing the shade, rather warm around 2700 K for a living room, more neutral towards 4000 K for a worktop. On models with replaceable bulb, this shade can be changed without changing the luminaire.
LED ceiling light living room: can a pendant lantern replace it?
Yes, for central lighting. A pendant is fixed to the ceiling like a ceiling light, but the light descends from a high point, often softer. The Doran pendant, IP44, or the round Uriel, G9 base, are suitable for a living room, and models with E27 base accept a replacement bulb.
Modern LED ceiling light or openwork lantern: what look on the ceiling
A classic ceiling light illuminates downwards from a plate pressed against the ceiling. An openwork lantern also projects patterns on the walls and ceiling: the Éther pendant, in a black or gold metal cage, plays this role. For a more sober look, the Sablée pendant, in linen and metal with its ball shape, goes unnoticed. Most pieces of the lantern collection hold this dual function.
LED ceiling luminaire: adjust the height before drilling
The height is decided before fixing. The Doran and Uriel pendants go up to 130 cm, the Ondisto is adjustable from 55 to 120 cm with a 150 cm cable. Above a table, generally allow 75 to 85 cm between the bottom of the shade and the tabletop, to be adjusted according to the ceiling height and the setback of the chairs.
LED wall light living room: what power and what height?
A wall light illuminates a wall or a circulation, not the whole room. The Tubula wall light combines a dome and a metal tube, GU10 base, 10 W, for a living room, a dressing room or an office; the outdoor CharmeRétro and Evanna wall lights are fixed on the facade.
Powerful LED wall light: what really makes the difference
It is not the wattage alone that counts, but the orientation of the flux and the distance to the wall. A model with dome and tube projects upwards and downwards and illuminates widely; a glass model concentrates. The powers announced in the selection range from 5 W to 40 W depending on the references. To illuminate a long corridor, two medium wall lights are better than a single very strong one.
Modern LED wall light in an entrance or dressing room: suitable formats
In a corridor, place it around 1.70 m from the floor, at eye level. In a dressing room or office, the Tubula wall light (length 11 cm, depth 19 cm, height 23 cm) is placed above a worktop or a dressing table. On the facade, the Evanna IP65 wall light, 430 mm high, is suitable for an exposed entrance. Other wall models are gathered in the outdoor lanterns.
LED chandelier living room: what differences with a lantern pendant?
A chandelier multiplies the light points on a structure; a lantern pendant concentrates the light in an openwork shade. For a living room or a dining room, the Éther cage lantern or the Ondisto pendant in brass and glass, height-adjustable, give a more graphic and more sober look.
LED chandelier living room or hanging lantern: which one above a table
Above a table, the real question is the width of the halo. A chandelier covers a large surface but requires ceiling height; a single lantern goes lower and concentrates the light on the tabletop, which leaves the rest of the room in a soft light. For a very large table, two aligned pendants work better than a single one.
Éther and Ondisto: two looks, two atmospheres
The cage lantern Éther pendant, in metal, glass and iron, E27 base, lets light pass between its uprights and draws sharp shadows. The Ondisto brass and glass pendant, with E14 base, filters more and illuminates warmer. The first for an open living space, the second for a more dressed living room, on the side of the vintage spirit.
How to choose your LED lantern according to the room and the format?
First choose the room, then the format. A round or ball shape widely illuminates a living room, an openwork model in rope or bamboo brings graphics to a dining room, and a wall light stays on a wall. The diameter and the adjustable height determine the final look.
Round, ball, square or tube: the shape changes the light
A closed ball, like the Sablée pendant in linen and metal, will diffuse an enveloping light and few shadows. An open cage, like the Zenitho pendant in openwork gold or black metal, projects on the contrary a drawing on the walls. A model in braided rope, like the Séram pendant, plays on the material as much as on the light. Dark finishes are found in the openwork metal lanterns.
Read the useful dimensions: diameter, height and adjustable cable
The diameter determines the width of the halo: around 23 cm for the Séram, 28 cm for the Sablée. The total height counts to avoid hitting your head: round models like Doran and Uriel peak at 130 cm. Finally check the cable length and the adjustment range, useful in all Designix luminaires under a high ceiling.
| Type | Shape | Materials | Recommended room | Base |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Doran pendant | Round | Metal and glass | Living room, bedroom | G9 |
| Ondisto pendant | Chain cylinder | Brass, glass, metal | Living room | E14 |
| Sablée pendant | Ball | Linen and metal | Living room, bedroom, dining room | E27 |
| Séram pendant | Openwork | Rope and metal | Dining room, entrance | E27 |
| Tubula wall light | Dome and tube | Metal | Dressing room, office, living room | GU10 |
| Evanna wall light | Rectangular | Aluminium | Exposed entrance | E27 |
Indoor or outdoor: what IP protection rating to choose?
In a dry room, an IP20 rating is enough; for a facade, a terrace or an exposed entrance, at least IP44 is required. The selection covers IP20, IP44, IP54 and IP65, from the most sheltered model to the most exposed, with wall lights and lanterns intended for the garden, balcony or entrance wall.
IP20, IP44, IP54, IP65: what each rating allows
IP20 protects against contact with fingers, not against water: it remains reserved for dry rooms. IP44 withstands splashes, so a sheltered facade or a covered terrace. IP54 adds protection against dust and is suitable for a balcony. IP65 resists water jets: this is the level to aim for for an entrance not protected from rain.
Outdoor LED lanterns: terrace, garden, entrance or garage
On a terrace, a wall light or a low lantern is enough. A garden is treated with post-mounted models or floor lanterns, or solar lanterns where the cable does not reach. For an exposed entrance, aim for IP65. If automatic switching interests you, the models with motion detector avoid leaving the light on all night.
| Rating | Where to install | Concerned models |
|---|---|---|
| IP20 | Living room, bedroom, dining room, office | Ondisto, Sablée, Éther, Tubula, Uriel |
| IP44 | Sheltered facade, covered terrace | Doran, CharmeRétro, ZenEclat |
| IP54 | Terrace, balcony, garden | Paline, Noreia |
| IP65 | Exposed entrance, facade wall | Evanna |
What bulbs and what powers for a LED lantern?
Everything depends on the base. E27 models accept most bulbs on the market, G9 and E14 versions require compact bulbs, and lanterns with integrated LED cannot be changed. Check the base announced on the product sheet before buying the bulb.
Base E27, E14, G9 or GU10: recognize your own
E27 is the large screw base, the most widespread: Sablée, Éther, Séram, Zenitho, Évasion, CharmeRétro, ZenEclat and Evanna. E14 is its thin version, on the Ondisto. G9 is a small clip-in pin, on Doran and Uriel. GU10 also clips in, but with two pins: it is the base of the Tubula. The Paline and Noreia models work with a non-replaceable integrated LED.
5 W, 10 W, 12 W, 15 W: what these values mean in a room
An integrated LED wall light at 5 W is enough to mark an entrance, a Tubula at 10 W illuminates a worktop, a G9 pendant at 12 W plays the role of central point, and 15 W on an E27 model like the Zenitho or the Évasion widely illuminates a living room. In a living space, stay on a warm shade and complete with an accent rather than increasing power.
How to install and maintain a LED lantern?
Fix the plate to the support, adjust the cable height before tightening, then put the bulb in place. Each material then requires a simple maintenance gesture: this is what keeps the luminaire its original look.
Adjust the height of a pendant before fixing it
Cut the power at the circuit breaker, identify the wires, then fix the plate in a solid material (concrete, solid wood, suitable plug). Adjust the cable length before blocking the cable clamp: the Ondisto is adjustable from 55 to 120 cm, Doran and Uriel go up to 130 cm. Once the height is chosen, tighten, then put the bulb and restore power.
Clean metal, glass, brass, rope and woven bamboo
A soft slightly damp cloth is enough for metal, glass and aluminium. Brass is dusted dry to preserve its patina. Rope, woven bamboo and linen do not withstand water: brush dry or vacuum with a soft nozzle. Cut the power before any intervention on an outdoor model.
The choice is played on the room, the shape and the base. Once these three points are fixed, compare the black finishes for outdoor or the old lanterns if you are looking for a more patinated look, and find the whole catalogue in all Designix luminaires. Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service accompany you until installation.
Frequently asked questions about LED lanterns
What are the disadvantages of LED lamps?
LED heats little, which is an advantage, but the shade depends on the chosen bulb and an integrated LED cannot be replaced. On E27, E14, G9 or GU10 models, the bulb remains interchangeable: you can change the colour temperature without replacing the luminaire.
What are the best LED lamps?
There is no single best model: you choose according to the room, the base and the protection rating. An IP44 or IP65 lantern for outdoor, IP20 in a dry room, an E27 base to keep the bulb interchangeable, and a dimmer when the model provides for it.
Can a LED lantern be installed in a bathroom?
A water room requires a suitable rating: IP20 models are reserved for dry rooms, while IP44 and higher references withstand splashes. Check the rating announced on the model sheet before fixing it near a water point, and respect the safety volumes around the bathtub.
Outdoor LED lanterns: IP44 or IP65?
IP44 protects against water splashes and is suitable for a sheltered facade or a covered terrace; IP65 resists jets and dust, like the Evanna wall light intended for an exposed entrance. CharmeRétro and ZenEclat are announced in IP44, the Noreia and the Paline in IP54.
How to adjust the height of a lantern pendant?
The height is adjusted before final fixing. The Ondisto brass pendant is adjustable from 55 to 120 cm, with a 150 cm cable; Doran and Uriel go up to 130 cm. The cable clamp is blocked once the height is chosen, then the bulb is put in place.
