Allow one light source per reader: a black wall lamp on either side of the bed, or a floor lamp placed in the reading corner, and the room stays in shadow while the page is lit. This collection brings together black reading lamps to fix to the wall or stand on the floor, in warm white between 2700 and 3500 K, with an adjustable arm or a cylindrical shade.

What is a black reading lamp and what light does it give?

A black reading lamp is an adjustable accent light, to be fixed to the wall or placed on the floor, that lights a page without turning on the whole room. In this collection, the black finish appears on every model, the light is mostly warm white between 2700 and 3500 K, and the bulb is most often screwed in E27.

A warm white light, between 2700 and 3500 K

Warm white remains the comfortable benchmark for reading in the evening: it leans towards orange, tires the eye less than cool white and leaves the room in a soft atmosphere. It equips the vast majority of models, whether you go for a simple wall lamp or a floor reading lamp. A few references also accept a neutral white, around 3500 to 4500 K, a little whiter but still readable.

IP20: an indoor light only

The whole collection is rated IP20: protected against contact and dust, not against water. These reading lamps are therefore intended for dry rooms: bedroom, living room, office or hallway. If you are looking to equip a wet room, better to choose another light in the Designix lighting range, where protection ratings vary by family.

Which black reading lamp to choose for a bedroom?

For a bedroom, the lamp is fixed to the wall on either side of the bed, at shoulder height once seated: the adjustable arm sends the light onto the book and lets the other person sleep. Most models in the collection are in black metal, with a cylindrical shade or an adjustable spotlight.

Placing one reading lamp on each side of the bed

Two wall lamps are better than one large one: each lights its own reader, without waking the other. the Marmileno reading wall lamp measures 280 mm high by 170 mm wide and 250 mm deep, with a flexible arm and an integrated 3 W reading light in addition to the E27 socket: the beam falls straight onto the pages. For a more dressed look, the Nolma and its velvet shade reaches 27 cm high for 25 cm deep, with a 40 W E27 socket and a 1 W accent reading light. bedside reading lamps for the headboard are mainly chosen on these two dimensions.

Adjustable arm or fixed shade: what changes in use

A fixed shade gives a broad, stable light, ideal for reading seated. An adjustable arm, on the other hand, is readjusted when you shift or move from bed to armchair. the Valdanica cylindrical spotlight fits in 86 mm square and only 41 mm deep, with an integrated 3 W LED: it is the most discreet format for a narrow headboard.

How to light a living room with a black reading lamp?

In the living room, the reading lamp complements the general light without replacing it: a wall lamp with a long offset arm lights an armchair, an arc floor lamp places the source above the reading corner. Black blends into a contemporary interior and warm white keeps the atmosphere soft.

Arc floor lamp or offset wall lamp: where to place the source

the Stévia arc floor lamp extends its arm from 210 to 240 cm for a 45 cm diameter shade, with a dimmer: the light falls on the sofa without taking up floor space. The Astria floor lamp, more understated, reaches 160 cm with a 40 W E27 socket, handy when the passage is narrow. On the wall side, Livvesella offers an adjustable reach from 115 to 145 cm and a 50 cm diameter linen shade, to light an armchair without drilling above the sofa. reading lamps with a crafted design play the same role with more presence.

Matching black with a second warm white light

A well-tuned living room mixes two levels: a general light high up, then a low reading point. The Auréline pendant, a 50 cm shade in black linen lined with gold and adjustable height from 30 to 145 cm, takes the first role; the black wall lamp takes the second. Stay on the same temperature, warm white, to avoid the contrast between a yellow corner and a bluish one. To vary the tone without leaving warm white, see the gold-toned reading lamps.

Which black wall lamp for an industrial style?

An industrial-style black wall lamp is recognised by its exposed metal, its articulated or offset arm and its cylindrical shade. In this collection, metal largely dominates, several models are adjustable and the E27 socket accepts a visible bulb: that is what gives the raw look sought after.

Exposed metal, articulated arm and cylindrical shade

Metal accounts for more than eight models out of ten, sometimes combined with aluminium or brushed steel. For the workshop spirit, look for a tube shade, a bulb that stays visible and an arm that locks in several positions. the Liègora articulated wall lamp, 90 cm long for a 30 cm shade, pairs black metal with cork and reorients at will. the Banwa arc wall lamp in woven bamboo, with its 60 cm by 25 cm shade and its dimmer, softens the raw side through its material. models in wood and cork follow the same natural vein.

Measuring the projection and height before drilling

The classic mistake is drilling before checking the clearance needed for the shade. A flat model like the Valdanica needs only 4.1 cm of depth and suits a hallway. A wall lamp with an offset arm like the Marmileno projects 25 cm, the Nolma just as much: you have to anticipate shoulder movement and door opening. Also note the height of the switch or dimmer so you do not have to get up.

Can a black designer bathroom wall lamp be installed?

All the reading lamps in this collection are IP20: they are protected against contact and dust, not against water. In a bathroom, they are therefore reserved for a wall outside the splash zone, or used as accent lighting rather than above a bathtub.

IP20: what the light withstands

This rating allows use in a dry interior, not exposure to splashes or concentrated steam. A wall away from the shower, an entry area or a dressing room remain reasonable locations. If the spot is really damp, look instead for a light with a higher protection rating in all our lighting families.

Cleaning a black finish without scratching it

Black metal is dusted with a soft cloth, slightly damp if needed, then dried to avoid marks. Avoid abrasive sponges and harsh products. Linen, velvet, cork or bamboo shades are treated dry, with a feather duster or a vacuum cleaner on the gentle setting: water marks the fibres and makes the fabric pucker.

Which socket and which bulb for a black reading lamp?

Most models screw in E27, a few work in G9 or E14, and some use an integrated LED that cannot be replaced. Lights with a socket are rated at 40 W, models with integrated LED at 3 W. Check the socket stated on the product page before buying the bulb.

E27, G9, E14 or integrated LED: the sockets in the collection

E27 remains the safe bet: a standard bulb, replaceable, available everywhere in warm white. G9, with pins, is reserved for slim, adjustable wall lamps. E14 and G4 concern a few compact lights, to be confirmed case by case. Models with integrated LED, for their part, just need a connection: no bulb to plan for, but no source to change either.

40 W or 3 W: read the page before buying the bulb

For reading, a warm white bulb between 2700 and 3500 K remains the most comfortable choice, staying within the power stated by the manufacturer. A moderate, well-directed intensity is better than a strong diffuse power that dazzles. On compatible models, a dimmer lets you lower the light at the end of the evening.

Sockets and bulbs in the collection
Socket Observed power What it implies
E27 40 W Standard screw bulb, replaceable, wide choice in warm white
Integrated LED 3 W Non-replaceable source, no bulb to buy
G9 12 W Small pin bulb, for slim and adjustable wall lamps
E14 not specified Small screw socket, to check on the product page
G4 not specified Very small pin socket, reserved for compact lights

How to fix and maintain a black reading lamp?

A wall lamp with an offset arm is fixed above and beside the reading point, with the shade coming into line with the book; a floor lamp is simply placed next to the armchair. For maintenance, a soft cloth is enough on black metal, and the shade is dusted dry.

Placing the shade in line with the reading

The right test is done seated: the shadow must not fall on the page and the source must not enter the field of vision. On an offset wall lamp, adjust the reach before tightening, then check that the arm stays stable. An arc floor lamp is placed about one metre from the armchair, the head above the seat, without encroaching on the passage.

Maintaining black metal, linen, velvet and cork

Dust with a soft cloth on steel and aluminium, without abrasive product. Velvet is brushed against the nap very lightly to revive the fibre. Cork and bamboo fear humidity: dry dusting is enough. Finally, check the screws are tight once a year, an articulated arm used every day ends up loosening.

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to read in the dark with a reading lamp?

Yes, provided the light is directed: an adjustable wall lamp or an offset arm concentrates the beam on the page without lighting the room. The socket models in this collection accept a warm white bulb between 2700 and 3500 K, more comfortable for reading in the evening.

Is it worth buying a reading lamp?

If two people share the same bedroom, or if the ceiling light tires you, the reading lamp avoids turning on the whole room: the beam follows the reading and leaves the rest in shadow. Several models are compatible with a dimmer, to adjust the intensity according to the time.

What are the drawbacks of a reading lamp?

It lights little surface, does not replace a general light and requires, for a wall lamp, a power point on the wall and drilling in the right place. The whole collection is IP20, so reserved for dry interiors. Several models work with a bulb to be provided separately.

Marmileno or Valdanica for a headboard?

The Marmileno suits if you want a replaceable E27 bulb, a flexible arm and an integrated 3 W reading light, within 25 cm of depth. The Valdanica takes less space with its 4.1 cm and its integrated 3 W LED, but its source cannot be replaced.

Black living room chandelier or black reading lamp: what to choose?

A chandelier lights the room from the ceiling, a reading lamp lights one person in a precise spot. In a living room, the two complement each other: the general light high up, then an offset wall lamp or an arc floor lamp near the sofa, in warm white to keep the atmosphere soft.
