To light a room with a tube, allow one linear fixture per zone: a ceiling light or pendant in the centre, a wall light along a wall, a floor lamp near an armchair. All the models in this selection are IP20, with integrated LED or E27, E14, GU10 or G4 sockets, in warm white or cool white.
Which linear light should you choose for which room?
For a living room or a bedroom, a ceiling light or wall light shaped like a tube spreads a long, soft light in warm white. A study calls for brighter, directed lighting. A hallway and a dining room take a narrower format, fixed to the wall or the ceiling.
LED ceiling light, LED wall light or pendant: which format for which use?
The ceiling light sits at the centre of the room and lights broadly: the Undine ceiling light with four globes places four opal points of light on a golden bar, with E14 sockets. The wall light works at height, along a wall, without cluttering the floor, like the Yira wall light and its 40 cm tube shape. The pendant, for its part, sits above a table or a desk, as with the Véra pendant. To compare these formats across the whole home, browse our lighting catalogue.
LED tube lights for the kitchen and hallway: what really changes
In a kitchen, light should fall on the worktop rather than into your eyes: a wall light or a compact ceiling light placed near the tall units does that job, as in worktop lighting. In a hallway, you want the opposite: an even wash of light, with no dark zone, and a narrow format that does not eat into the walkway. A utility room or a workshop calls for different resistance: see workshop linear lights.
| Room | Suitable light | Common materials | Light temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Ceiling light or long wall light | Glass, metal, aluminium | Warm white 2700-3500 K |
| Bedroom | Wall light or bedside lamp | Metal, glass | Warm white 2700-3500 K |
| Study | Wall light or pendant | Metal, plastic, aluminium | Warm white to cool white |
| Hallway | Tubular wall light or compact ceiling light | Metal | Warm white 2700-3500 K |
| Dining room | Ceiling light with several globes | Glass, metal, brass | Warm white 2700-3500 K |
| Kitchen | Wall light or ceiling light | Metal, aluminium | Cool white possible 4500-6500 K |
How do you choose the size and format of an LED tube light?
First measure the free space on the ceiling or wall, then compare it with the dimensions given on the product sheet: 122 cm long for the Valena wall light, 40 cm for the Yira wall light, 30 cm for the Disco ceiling light. Also check the position of the fixing point.
LED tube lights 60 cm, 120 cm or 150 cm: how to find your bearings before buying
The usable length is not the length of the box: a 122 cm light such as the Valena wall light takes up almost the whole width of a bedroom wall, while a 40 cm format slips between two pieces of furniture or above a worktop. Mark the measurement on the wall with masking tape before drilling. To place the other available formats, compare with all Designix lights.
Measuring ceiling height and clearance from furniture
A ceiling light only needs the height of its own crown, often around fifteen centimetres. A pendant, on the other hand, hangs down: allow for the drop above the table, generally 60 to 80 cm depending on ceiling height and the size of the diners. A 187 cm floor lamp such as the Onda floor lamp must stay clear of a door that opens.
Which light temperature and wattage for an LED tube light?
Warm white, from 2700 to 3500 K, suits living and resting rooms; cool white, from 4500 to 6500 K, suits workspaces. In terms of wattage, the selection ranges from 8 W to 40 W depending on the model, from the small ceiling light to the living room floor lamp.
Warm white or cool white: which mood for the living room?
Warm white leans towards yellow and warms materials: golden glass, a fabric shade or a brass frame all gain from it. Cool white makes colours more neutral and suits a workspace or a kitchen where you chop. Many interiors mix the two depending on the time of day, which a dimmer-compatible light allows. For preparation lighting, see also kitchen LED tube lights.
E27, E14, GU10 or integrated LED socket: what it changes in use
A screw socket leaves the choice of bulb and its temperature, which you can change in two years' time. An integrated LED fixes the wattage and colour, but avoids any bulb replacement. The G4 of small slim lights stays on low-voltage modules.
| Socket | Type of source | Example models | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| E27 | Screw bulb, replaceable | Véra pendant, Nari wall light, Bravora, Lumiro, Hespera, Astria floor lamps | Shade, rope or adjustable-arm formats |
| E14 | Small screw socket | Undine, Lorelei, Veridis ceiling lights, Trigo floor lamp | Compact formats, often with several globes |
| GU10 | Pin bulb | Disco ceiling light | Adjustable spot lighting |
| G4 | Small low-voltage bulb | Yira wall light | Suitable for slim tube-shaped lights |
| Integrated LED | Non-replaceable module | Zelena Touch pendant, Onda floor lamp, Valena wall light, Verella lamp | No bulb changes, wattage set by the model |
How can I replace a neon tube with an LED tube light?
Note the length, the fixing method and the socket of the existing light, then look for an LED model with the same dimensions. Integrated LED versions are replaced entirely, whereas models with an E27, E14, GU10 or G4 socket take a bulb, like the Yira wall light.
T5 LED tubes and DMX LED tubes: two very different uses
A T5 tube refers to a slim format, common under a shelf or inside a cabinet. DMX, on the other hand, is used to control lighting scenes and has nothing to do with domestic use. Before buying, above all check whether you are replacing the whole light or just the bulb: that point decides the rest. For rooms exposed to steam, turn to moisture-resistant lighting, and for an unheated room to lighting a garage.
What to check before removing the old light
Note the spacing of the fixings, the space available around the light and the cable outlet. If the old model hung down, check that the new one does not obstruct a door or a cupboard. Once these three points are noted, comparing product sheets becomes simple and quick.
Which LED wall light should you choose to light a wall or a living room?
A long LED wall light lights a whole wall or a headboard without taking up floor space: the Valena wall light measures 122 cm, the Yira wall light 40 cm. Both are warm white, with an integrated LED module for the first and a G4 socket for the second.
Modern LED wall light: which style and material should you choose?
Black metal gives clean lines and strong contrast, particularly above a bed or along a dark hallway. A model blending aluminium and acrylic, such as the Yira wall light, spreads a more even and less harsh light. The choice therefore comes down to two questions: do you want a graphic line or a soft wash? The wall light suits most interiors, and remains compatible with a bathroom light when the room allows.
A powerful wall light for a headboard or a hallway
For a headboard, you want low, non-dazzling light, directed at the book rather than at your eyes. A long 24 W module such as the one in the Valena wall light lights two people without any other source. In a hallway, the same wall light placed high up replaces a ceiling light and frees the walkway.
Powerful LED ceiling light or LED chandelier: which choice for a large living room?
An LED ceiling light fixed to the ceiling suits ordinary living rooms, with a compact 30 cm format such as the Disco model or a version with several glass globes. The LED chandelier, bulkier, brings a decorative presence above a table or in a living room with a high ceiling.
Modern LED ceiling light: glass, metal or brass?
Opal glass diffuses and softens, smoked glass on a brass frame discreetly warms the whole, as with the Veridis ceiling light in smoked glass. Black or golden metal, more graphic, suits contemporary interiors. A minimalist 30 cm metal model, the Disco ceiling light, stands alone in a medium-sized room and accepts a dimmer.
LED ceiling lighting: how many light points for a large room?
A central ceiling light is often enough up to around twenty square metres. Beyond that, add a wall light or a floor lamp rather than increasing the wattage of a single point: the light is more even and the shadows softer. To decide between several families of lights, compare our selection of indoor lights.
How do you install and maintain an LED light?
All the models in this selection are IP20: they are installed indoors, protected from water splashes. Plan the electrical supply before fixing, tighten the screws onto a solid support, then dust the glass globes and diffusers with a dry cloth.
Ceiling or wall mounting: the checkpoints
Locate the cable runs before drilling, then hold the light against the wall to mark the holes. On a hollow support, use a plug suited to the weight of the fixture. A 122 cm wall light needs two people, one to hold it, the other to screw it in. IP20 means keeping the light out of reach of splashes. For a genuinely damp room, look instead at solutions for damp rooms.
Maintaining glass, metal and aluminium without damaging them
A soft cloth is enough for glass globes and opal diffusers. On metal, avoid abrasive products that scratch the finish and keep brass away from excess moisture. Regular dusting keeps the light output, because a thin layer is enough to veil the diffusion. Models intended for the garden are treated differently, to be discovered in outdoor LED tube lights.
Dimmer, warranty and budget: what to look at before ordering
Some of the models accept a dimmer, to be checked reference by reference. The warranty runs from 2 to 5 years depending on the light. On budget, the collection covers accessible models as well as more elaborate pieces: the current price is shown on each product sheet.
Secure payment, tracked delivery and returns: how does it work?
Several references in the collection accept a dimmer, such as the Zelena Touch pendant, the Disco ceiling light, the Onda floor lamp and the Yira wall light, to be checked reference by reference. Customer service answers compatibility questions before purchase as well as after installation. If you are unsure about a socket or a length, ask before ordering: it is quicker than a parcel going back and forth. Compare for example the Yira wall light and the Valena, two wall tubes of very different lengths.
Choosing between two similar models: Valena 122 cm versus Yira 40 cm
How much surface do I need to cover, and at what height does the light arrive? Does the room need ambient light or task light? Finally, does the source need to be replaceable? The answers are enough to decide: a dimmer-compatible light for a relaxing room, a screw socket if you want to keep control of the bulb, an integrated LED if you would rather forget about maintenance. Find the models that match in all Designix lights.
Frequently asked questions about LED tube lights
Can an LED tube light be connected to any light fixture?
No. The fixture must accept the format, the fixing and the socket of the chosen model. In this selection, integrated LED tubes, such as the Zelena Touch pendant or the Onda floor lamp, do not take a bulb, unlike the E27, E14 or GU10 versions.
What does IP20 mean on an LED light?
IP20 indicates a light protected against solid objects larger than 12.5 mm, with no protection against water. All the models in this collection are IP20: they are installed indoors, away from water splashes, unlike waterproof LED tubes.
Which wattage should you choose for an LED tube light?
The selection covers 8 W to 40 W depending on use: small ceiling lights and wall lights sit around 10 to 12 W, while most floor lamps and pendants sit between 24 and 40 W, but some compact models such as the Trigo floor lamp go down to 10 W. The wattage to choose depends above all on the surface to be lit.
LED tube lights 120 cm: how do you check that the length fits?
Measure the free area on the ceiling or wall, then compare it with the length given on the model's product sheet. Also allow for the position of the fixing point and the clearance from furniture. In this collection, formats range from 30 cm to 122 cm long.
LED chandelier or LED ceiling light: what is the difference?
The ceiling light is fixed directly to the ceiling and lights a room broadly, like the minimalist 30 cm Disco model. The LED chandelier, bulkier, becomes a decorative element above a table or in a living room with a high ceiling. Both are installed indoors.
