Start by counting the room and the available height: a wall light for a hallway or an entrance, a pendant above a table, a chandelier in the centre of the living room, a floor lamp where nothing can be drilled. This selection of steel lights brings together bodies, arms and supports in steel, often combined with glass, acrylic, aluminium or fabric, with E14, E27, G9, G4 or GU10 sockets and, for a large part, an integrated LED.
What is a steel light and what light does it give?
Steel is the dominant material in this selection: it forms the body, the arm or the support of the light. The result depends less on the material than on the source placed inside it: warm white for a golden light, cool white for a crisp light. All the models are IP20, so intended for dry rooms.
Steel lights
A steel light is recognisable by its structure: a slim arm, a flat support, a tubular or spherical body. In this collection, the gold finish comes up most often, followed by black, white and silver. Steel combines with metal, glass, acrylic, aluminium, brass and sometimes fabric, as on the Lumière Nordique linen and metal wall light, which pairs a steel and aluminium support with a textile shade.
Stainless steel light
Stainless steel is an alloy steel that resists corrosion and ambient humidity better. It appears on some of the wall lights and pendants in the collection, usually paired with glass or acrylic. This does not change the protection rating: these models remain IP20 and are installed in dry rooms, even if stainless steel tolerates damp air better.
Which steel light for each room of the house?
The living room and the bedroom hold most of the models in the collection: wall lights, chandeliers, pendants and floor lamps all find their place there. In the kitchen and the dining room, a pendant or a chandelier above the worktop or the table is preferred. For a hallway, an entrance or a toilet, a compact wall light is enough.
| Family | Room where it comes up most | What it brings | To check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall light | Bedroom, hallway, staircase | Side lighting that takes up no floor space | Support dimensions, E14 socket, IP20 |
| Chandelier | Living room, dining room, kitchen | Several light points in the centre of the room | Adjustable height and cable length |
| Pendant | Living room, bedroom, kitchen | Downward light above a table or an island | Drop height and diameter |
| Arc floor lamp | Living room, bedroom | Wide diffusion without drilling the wall | Floor footprint and total height |
| Standing floor lamp | Living room, office, bedroom | Movable source and targeted reading | E27 socket and maximum stated wattage |
Kitchen lights
Above a worktop or an island, a steel pendant drops down and concentrates the light. A multi-head chandelier covers a table or an open kitchen. Look at the diameter and the cable length before drilling: the model the Kory steel chandelier drops from 20 to 125 cm and carries a shade of 114 × 3 cm, which leaves some margin above a worktop. To go further, see our modern kitchen lights.
Toilet lights
In a toilet, a hallway or a staircase, the wall light is the simplest solution: it lights without taking up floor space. Choose an IP20 steel model, with an E14 or G9 socket, and check the size of the support. A tubular wall light such as the Éclat Moderne tube wall light fits within 9.5 cm. How to choose between a steel chandelier, a pendant, a wall light and a floor lamp?
The chandelier lights widely in the centre of a room and takes several bulbs, the pendant drops above a table or an island, the wall light lights from the side without taking up floor space, and the floor lamp moves around. The choice depends on the area to cover and the available height: measure from the floor to the fixing point before deciding.
Steel chandelier
A chandelier is placed in the centre, with several light points that spread the light. Two formats stand out: the multi-head chandelier, such as the Ario industrial style chandelier and its four heads in steel and iron, and the ball chandelier, such as the Yria chandelier in glass and steel. Check the minimum height under the light and the number of light points for the size of the room.
Black steel floor lamp
Black structures a room without overloading it. An arc floor lamp diffuses widely without drilling the wall, provided you allow for its floor footprint: the Qile five-light arc floor lamp measures 194 × 80 cm and takes five E14 bulbs, 40 W maximum. For a softer, movable light, a standing model in fabric and metal sits next to an armchair. More ideas in our living room floor lamps.
Which socket and wattage to choose for a steel light?
The selection uses five sockets: E14 and E27 screw, G9 and G4 pin, GU10 two-pin. The E14 equips the wall lights, the chandeliers and a five-light floor lamp, the E27 the standing floor lamps, the G9 the flower pendant, the G4 the ball chandelier and the GU10 the linen wall light. Some of the models take a dimmer.
| Socket | Bulb type | Where it appears in the selection | To remember |
|---|---|---|---|
| E14 | Small screw bulb | Wall lights, chandeliers, five-light arc floor lamp | Compact format, suited to low wattages |
| E27 | Large screw bulb | Standing floor lamps and arc floor lamp | Common bulb, easy to replace |
| G9 | Pin bulb | Flower pendant | Small housing, small-format bulb |
| G4 | Fine pin bulb | Ball chandelier | Small volume, used on multi-point fittings |
| GU10 | Two-pin spotlight | Linen and metal wall light | Warm white or cool white version depending on the model |
E14 or E27 socket, which to choose
The E14 is a small screw socket: it fits in the small wall light domes and in multi-head chandeliers, and is content with modest wattages. The E27 is the large screw format, the one on standing floor lamps and many arc floor lamps, where it takes 40 W bulbs. If you are replacing an existing bulb, unscrew it and compare the thread diameter.
G9, G4 and GU10 bulbs
These three sockets are fitted without screwing. The G9 and the G4 push onto two pins, the G4 being the finest: it equips lights with many light points, such as the ball chandelier. The GU10 is a two-pin spotlight, often supplied in warm white or cool white depending on the model, which lets you match the mood of a wall light to that of the room.
Warm white or cool white: which light temperature for which room?
Warm white, between 2700 and 3500 K, gives a golden light suited to the living room, the bedroom and the dining room. Cool white, between 4500 and 6500 K, makes colours crisper and suits the kitchen, the hallway or a worktop. Some models exist in both versions.
Warm white or cool white, how to decide
Ask the question by use: we read, cook and work better under a crisp light, we dine and relax better under a warm light. In an open living space, warm white unifies the living room and the dining room, while a hallway or an entrance gains crispness with cool white. Living room LED lighting in warm white remains the most common choice for relaxation rooms.
Colour temperature and black or gold finish
The finish changes the perception of the light. Gold reflects warmth and pairs well with warm white, black absorbs and structures, silver and white reflect more and suit cool white. In a bedroom, a crystal and gold or black metal wall light, such as the Reflection wall light, plays this role of side accent.
What does IP20 mean and where to install a steel light?
IP20 means the light is protected against contacts and solid bodies larger than 12.5 mm, but not against water. The whole selection is in this rating. It is therefore installed in dry rooms, away from water splashes, and never in a shower or spray zone.
Where to install a steel light
Living room, bedroom, dining room, kitchen, hallway, staircase, entrance, office and dressing room are the natural rooms for this collection. In a bathroom, the light is placed in the dry part, away from the tub and the sink. Wall lights find their place there as accent lighting, alongside a suitable bathroom light.
How to care for the steel of a light
A soft, dry cloth is enough to dust the body and the arms. Avoid abrasive products, scouring pads and harsh sprays that scratch the finish, especially on gold and silver. Cut the power before any work and handle pin bulbs with a clean cloth so as not to leave marks on the glass.
Original decorative lights and chic lights: how to move away from the standard model?
To move away from the standard model, play with shape, finish and paired material: a multi-head chandelier, a flower-patterned pendant, a tube wall light or an arc floor lamp. Gold, black or silver finishes radically change the result depending on the wall.
Original decorative lights, what to look at
Style is read in the silhouette before the colour. Tube shapes come up most often, followed by balls, arcs, ovals and squares. A flower pendant in metal and glass, such as the Soirée Enchantée pendant, brings a pattern where a smooth cylinder disappears. First compare the shape with the rest of the furniture, then the finish with the wall.
Chic lights, black or gold steel
Gold brings a more dressed touch, black a more graphic result, and both sit well with glass and brass. Contemporary style dominates the selection, ahead of modern, minimalist, vintage and industrial. For a room with strong presence, pick from a more luxurious statement piece or from the pendants and chandeliers with a unique design.
Where to buy steel lights, in a lighting store or online?
The selection is available online at Designix, with secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and customer service. For a search for a lighting store in Lyon or lighting clearance in Lyon, compare above all the warranty applied, the IP rating and the socket of the models, more than the displayed price alone.
Lighting store or online purchase
Online, you keep the full product page in front of you: dimensions, socket, protection rating, material, light temperature and warranty length. That is what lets you compare two lights without travelling. To widen the search to other materials and moods, browse all our lights and the modern living room lights.
Preparing your order
Note three things before confirming: the available height at the fixing point, the number of light points and the socket. For a dining room, note the desired drop height above the tabletop, generally around 70 to 80 cm depending on the size of the guests. Find our ideas to light a dining room and our pendants to hang. A model such as the Qile arc floor lamp requires you to allow for its floor footprint before unpacking.
Choose the family and the socket, the finish will follow: add the chosen light to the basket and the Designix team follows the delivery with you, with secure payment, returns and customer service.
Frequently asked questions
Which lighting brand is the most reliable?
Reliability is read in verifiable criteria rather than in a brand: a stated warranty, a clearly indicated IP20 rating, a standard E14, E27, G9, G4 or GU10 socket and a stated material. Check these points before comparing two lights, in store or online.
What are the trendy lighting brands?
The trends visible here come down to style rather than logo: contemporary dominates, followed by modern, minimalist and industrial. In finishes, gold and black come up most, with white and silver. Tube and ball shapes are the most represented, ahead of arcs and ovals.
Which lights for a toilet?
A compact wall light is enough: it lights without cluttering. Choose an IP20 model in steel or metal, with an E14 or G9 socket depending on the format you want, and a light finish if the room lacks natural light. Check the dimensions of the support before drilling. Our dedicated selection gathers toilet lights.
