Replacing a recessed LED spotlight: the step-by-step method

Switch off the power at the consumer unit, lower the spotlight by pinching its springs, then note three details before buying: the cut-out diameter, the base (GU10 or LED module) and the IP rating of the room. Those details determine the replacement model far more than the brand of the spotlight you removed.

How do I replace a recessed LED spotlight in my ceiling?

Three steps: switch off the power, unclip the spotlight without forcing it, unplug the quick connector, then connect the new model. A few minutes per spotlight once you have understood the first one. The question tutorials leave open remains: what to put in its place.

The replacement does not have to be identical. What matters is the cut-out diameter and the connection method. Our LED spotlight collection has 1575 references as of 29 September 2026: enough to find the right format without redoing the ceiling.

LED module, GU10 socket or track: what really needs comparing

The 7 checks before fitting a new spotlight

  • Switch off the power at the breaker and check that there is no voltage
  • Remove the spotlight by pulling on the rim, never on the wires
  • Identify the type of fixing or spring before refitting it
  • Note the base, cut-out diameter and protection rating of the model to be replaced
  • Check that the new light source is compatible with the dimmer if the old one was dimmable
  • Reconnect the quick connector, push the spotlight back in, then switch the power back on at the breaker
  • Test the neighbouring spotlights on the same circuit: the fault often comes from the driver, not the spotlight

Identify the fixing before pulling

A recessed spotlight is held in place in one of four ways. Pulling without looking breaks the plasterboard or the ring.

  • Side springs: two tabs grip the plasterboard, squeeze them inwards.
  • Bayonet ring: the body unscrews with a quarter turn, common on waterproof models.
  • Screw lugs: three screws around the rim, loosen them before any pulling.
  • Fragile plasterboard: slide a flat scraper under the ring to spread the load.

Then let the spotlight hang by its wires: the quick connector is designed for that, so you will not need to strip anything. The full procedure is described in our article on changing a recessed spotlight.

GU10 socket or LED module: the procedure is not the same

A GU10 is replaced in ten seconds, an LED module requires changing the unit with its driver. The habit to adopt: look into the hole before ordering.

Type What you replace What you keep
GU10 base The bulb alone, with a quarter turn The spotlight body and its support
LED module The complete unit with its driver The wiring and the quick connector

In a survey of 247 listings from our LED spotlight collection as of 29 September 2026, the stated base is LED in 96% of cases, GU10 in 3%. The module remains the norm, but GU10 can be repaired without tools. Our guide to replacing a recessed GU10 spotlight details the direction of rotation and the recurring loose contacts. Staying with GU10 also means choosing a GU10 LED bulb compatible with the body already in place.

Can an integrated LED bulb be changed?

Yes, but not always with a bulb. When the module is clipped or screwed onto a support, the part can be changed on its own. When it is soldered to the driver and embedded in the spotlight body, the whole unit must be replaced.

What to do when the LED module is built into the driver

You replace the whole assembly and reconnect the new one to the existing connector. Two points to check before ordering: the driver output voltage and the circuit power.

  • Integrated driver: its reference is on the label on the back of the spotlight.
  • Remote driver: it sits in the ceiling void and can be replaced on its own.
  • Quick connector: a small lever to push, never a wire to pull.

With no visible spring or screw, the clips are sometimes buried in the plaster. Our article on changing the bulb of a spotlight without clips shows how to work through the ring rather than the body.

Can you switch from an integrated module to a GU10 base?

Yes, by replacing the whole spotlight, not by modifying the old one. It is often the best long-term decision: the next failure will cost a bulb instead of a light fitting. Just check that the cut-out diameter accepts the springs of the new model.

What should I do if my LED spotlight stops working?

Test before buying a replacement. A spotlight that is off is often the driver, the connector or a contact, not the LED. Swap two spotlights on the same circuit: if the neighbour lights up in its place, the fault is with the spotlight and not the power supply.

Test the driver before buying a replacement

The driver converts the 230 V. It is the part that fails most often, and it costs less than a new spotlight.

  • Cross-swap: fit the suspect spotlight to a working driver, and vice versa.
  • Black mark or smell: the driver is dead, there is no point insisting.
  • Whole circuit off: check the breaker and dimmer before suspecting the spotlights.

A spotlight that goes out after years can be diagnosed in two minutes: bulb, connector or transformer, before replacing the LED spotlight.

A flickering spotlight is not a dead spotlight

Flickering almost always signals incompatibility with the dimmer, not an LED at the end of its life.

  • Old dimmer: designed for halogen, it does not go low enough with an LED load.
  • Load too low: two spotlights on a dimmer designed for six flicker at low intensity.
  • Non-dimmable module: in a survey of 94 listings from our LED spotlight collection as of 29 September 2026, 37% state dimming capability.
  • Unstable power supply: flickering across the whole room points to the circuit, not the spotlight.

The principle is explained in our article on dimmable LED.

Repair or replace: the choice is quickly made when you know what you want. If you are still unsure, Designix customer feedback shows what others chose in the same situation.

Unsure about the format to use in your home? Describe your ceiling and your room: you can ask for advice before buying.

Which spotlight should I choose to replace mine?

Three criteria, in this order: the IP rating according to the room, the colour temperature according to use, compatibility with your dimmer. The cut-out diameter only changes if you leave the standard format.

A benchmark for context: in a survey of 249 listings from our LED spotlight collection as of 29 September 2026, 96% show a 5-year warranty and 96% an IP20. Spotlights designed for dry interiors, covered for a long time. When two models are neck and neck, our customers' verifiable reviews on our Google listing are worth more than one more technical sheet.

Kitchen

Above a worktop, the light must fall on the surface and not into your eyes. An adjustable model solves the question better than a fixed spotlight, especially if you cook with your back to the window.

  • IP20 is enough everywhere, except near the sink.
  • 3000 K approximately: neutral enough to judge cooking, without the cold effect of an office.
  • Adjustment: 20 to 30 degrees of tilt lights the surface without glare.

For a coherent set rather than an isolated spotlight, our kitchen lighting selection groups the models designed for this use. And to target the worktop precisely, a directional spotlight does the job.

Ceiling

The question is not the model but the distribution. A single spotlight in the middle lights a circle; four well-spaced spotlights light the room.

  • Density: it is calculated according to the surface area and ceiling height, before drilling.
  • Spacing: the distance to the wall equals half the distance between two spotlights.
  • Dimmable: if you want to lower the intensity in the evening, decide at purchase.

The density calculation is detailed in our article on how many spotlights per m². For spacing, everything is in the distance between spotlights on the ceiling.

Some ceilings cannot be drilled, in concrete or solid slab: a spotlight rail is surface-mounted and provides the same type of lighting. The rest of the catalogue confirms this imbalance, since 82% of the stated mounting is "on track" against 18% "recessed" in the same survey of 249 listings as of 29 September 2026. If you prefer to give up spotlights, a LED ceiling light covers the room with a single light point.

Bathroom

The bathroom is the only room where the IP rating really decides. An IP20 in a wet area oxidises, and you will replace it in two years.

  • IP44 near the washbasin and bathtub.
  • IP65 in the shower or above a mirror exposed to splashes.
  • 3000 to 4000 K for a true complexion in front of the mirror.

In our survey of 249 listings as of 29 September 2026, 96% state an IP20, 2% an IP44 and 2% an IP65. The waterproof share is in the minority: look for it explicitly. Our article on white or yellow light helps decide the colour temperature.

Your questions about replacing a recessed LED spotlight

How can I replace a recessed LED spotlight in my ceiling?
Switch off the power at the breaker, lower the spotlight by pulling on its rim, then unplug the quick connector. Note the base, cut-out diameter and protection rating before buying: that is what determines the model that will fit exactly in the same place.
How do I change a recessed spotlight without clips?
With no visible springs, the fixing is often provided by two screw lugs or by a housing held by friction in the plasterboard. Unscrew the lugs from the inside before pulling, otherwise you will tear the plaster around the housing.
Can an integrated LED bulb be changed?
No: on a sealed LED module spotlight, the source and the driver form one unit. The whole spotlight is replaced, or sometimes only the module when the manufacturer provides for it. Our survey of 249 listings as of 29 September 2026 shows 96% of spotlights with an LED base, so most are changed as a unit.
How do I know if an LED spotlight is burnt out?
Swap the suspect spotlight with a neighbouring spotlight on the same circuit. If it stays off in another place, it is at fault; if it lights up, the problem comes from the power supply or the connector, not the source.
What should I do if my LED lighting stops working?
First check the breaker and the dimmer, then the connector, and finally the spotlight driver. A flickering spotlight almost always signals an unsuitable power supply or an incompatible dimmer, not a dead LED.
