Metal and wood lighting: the right room, the right light

Choose the room before the model. A pendant above the table, a wall light in the bedroom, a floor lamp in the corner. Out of a survey of 102 metal and wood wall lights in our collection, dated 6 November 2026, 95% are IP20 and 50% are E27. Two lines of the spec sheet are enough to decide.

Which metal and wood light for which room?

The room decides the format, the spec sheet decides the feasibility. A bedroom wants a low, grazing light, a living room a high point that does not dazzle, a hallway a source that doubles the passage. The black metal and wood wall lights cover these three uses, from the bedside wall to the end of the hallway.

In a bedroom, a wall light replaces the bedside lamp and frees the shelf: a wood wall light in the bedroom placed at shoulder height lights the book without waking the person next to you.

A pendant in natural wood or dark stain above the table?

Light wood warms, dark stain frames. A natural wood with a matte black metal gives a calm Scandinavian look. The same metal on a brown wood leans towards the workshop. On the 102 spec sheets surveyed, the black colourway is declared everywhere, brown on only 13%.

A wood and black pendant marks the vertical above a light wood table without weighing it down.

The format matters as much as the material. A wide dome crushes a small table, a narrow cylinder disappears above a table set for six.

In an already very woody living room, a wood light in the living room that is finer avoids the cabin effect.

Pendant, chandelier, ceiling light, floor lamp: what metal and wood do there

Which metal and wood chandelier for a living room?

Take the chandelier that lets the structure show if the room is high, and the one that lets the light show if it is low. Metal and wood reads from a distance by its silhouette, not by its details.

An industrial wood and black chandelier, how to recognise it?

The metal uprights stay visible, the bulbs show, the wood keeps a raw look. This vocabulary comes from industrial style lamps, where the mechanics are part of the decor.

A modern or Scandinavian wood chandelier, what is the difference?

Style Structure Wood Look
Industrial Visible metal, matte black Brown, raw Workshop
Scandinavian Fine, discreet Light Soft
Modern Geometric Solid colour Crisp

A wood chandelier in a modern style relies on line, not ornament. In the survey, the modern style is declared on 56% of spec sheets, contemporary on 27%.

At what height should a metal and wood pendant be hung?

Allow 70 to 80 cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the shade, a little less above a kitchen island. Metal drops lower than wood in the same range, because the frame shows.

The drop above the dining table

Measure the table and the ceiling height before cutting the cable. A living room with a 2.50 m ceiling does not tolerate the same drop as a through room. The guide on the dining room pendant details the various cases.

The anchor point and the weight of the metal

  • Ceiling hook for heavy models, never a simple eye bolt
  • Canopy checked at installation, it is what carries the load
  • Fixing suited to the substrate: plasterboard, concrete, wooden joist
  • Cable left a little long, it is easier to adjust than the other way round

A black metal pendant often weighs more than a wood-only model: the support must be identified before ordering.

The visible frames of the pieces in the industrial pendant light collection are fixed the same way, with a clearance at the ceiling that shows less.

What do the spec sheets of a metal and wood light really say?

Three lines are enough: protection rating, socket, dimmability. In the survey of 102 metal and wood wall lights as of 6 November 2026, IP20 covers 95% of the spec sheets, the E27 socket 50%, dimming 33%. This survey covers wall lights, not all the metal and wood in the catalogue.

IP20: for which room, and which to avoid?

IP20 indicates a dry room. In the bathroom, only 5% of the survey is IP44, which is enough for misted zones but not for a shower volume.

  • IP20: living room, bedroom, hallway, staircase
  • IP44: bathroom and kitchen surroundings
  • Warranty: 2 years on 88% of the survey, 5 years on 12%

The socket decides the bulb, dimming decides the rest

E27 on 50%, LED on 26%, G9 on 11%, GU10 on 6%. Before ordering, check the socket: an E27 accepts the bulb of your choice, an integrated LED ages with the light. Our guide to bulb types helps set the colour temperature.

Dimming is only declared on 33% of the survey, and 35% declare it absent. If your evenings call for dimming, this line is read before the photo.

If two models are still hesitating, the contact page is exactly for that: describe the room, the height and the nature of the support, and leave with a validated choice.

In which room should your metal and wood light live?

Ceiling light or floor lamp in metal and wood?

The ceiling light lights the room, the floor lamp lights a use. Take the ceiling light when the centre of the room must be lit without hanging, the floor lamp when a corner stays dark in the evening.

The ceiling light, the light that takes up no space

In a hallway or a bedroom under the eaves, it avoids the pendant in the passage. A living room ceiling light in metal and wood is placed near the centre, with no cable hanging.

The floor lamp, the dark corner lit

The wood and metal floor lamp works in indirect light, against a light wall, behind a sofa. Wood and metal floor lamps are chosen on the height of the stem and the overhang of the shade.

To frame the whole of a living room, a living room lighting project comes together faster than adding up lights chosen separately.

Six points to check on the spec sheet before ordering

  • The socket stated in black and white: E27, integrated LED, G9 or GU10, and the bulb that goes with it.
  • The protection rating: IP20 for a dry room, IP44 only if the room is damp.
  • Dimming: it must be declared, a dimmable bulb alone is not enough.
  • The weight and the anchor point: a metal frame requires a fixing that follows.
  • The shade of the wood and the metal, compared with your floor and your furniture, not alone on a white background.
  • The stated warranty, and what it exactly covers.

Metal and wood lighting: the questions that keep coming back

Which metal and wood light should I choose for a living room?
A pendant above the table, or a floor lamp in the corner if the ceiling is low. Aim for an E27 socket so you can change the bulb yourself, and check the diameter relative to the room before ordering.
Can a wood and metal light go in a bathroom?
Rarely. Out of a survey of 102 metal and wood wall lights in our catalogue, as of 6 November 2026, 95% are IP20, a rating that does not protect against moisture. For a damp room, look for a model explicitly rated IP44.
How to choose between a chandelier and a pendant in metal and wood?
The chandelier multiplies the light points on a single frame and is intended for slightly high volumes. The pendant brings a single source down as close as possible to the table or worktop, and its drop is set at installation.
Do I need a special bulb for a metal and wood light?
The socket decides. In the same survey, E27 accounts for 50%, LED 26%, G9 11% and GU10 6%. Note the socket before buying the bulb, then choose the colour temperature according to the room.
Industrial wood and black chandelier: what to watch when hanging it?
The weight of the frame and the nature of the support, not the diameter of the shade. A ceiling box does not carry the load of a heavy chandelier: the fixing must be chosen for what it really carries.
