Changing a pencil halogen bulb: the right move

Changing a pencil halogen bulb: the right move

Push the bulb sideways against the spring, one pin after the other, until the first side comes out of its contact. Tilt the pencil bulb towards you, it comes out through the bottom of the fixture. Cut the power first, let it cool: an R7s halogen stays hot for several minutes after being switched off.

How to change a pencil halogen bulb: the four-step move

Cut the power at the breaker or unplug the lamp, then follow four steps: remove the cover, push the bulb to the side, take it out of the spring, fit the new one in reverse order. An R7s base is held by its two ceramic ends, never by the glass.

  1. Cut the power at the consumer unit, not just at the fixture switch.
  2. Remove the cover: grille, bowl or projector glass.
  3. Push sideways one pin out of its seat, then the other side.
  4. Fit the new one on the same axis, without forcing the glass.

Before ordering, note the length engraved on the old bulb. The Design Bulbs collection has 282 references as of 28 September 2026; across a sample of 33 product pages from this catalogue on the same date, the stated bases break down as E27 (42%), G9 (27%), G4 (24%) and E14 (15%).

How to remove a long halogen bulb stuck in its spring

Press on one side at a time. The R7s spring only compresses at one end: push until the pin comes out of its seat, then free the second. If the bulb resists, heat has stuck it to the contact; a gentle side-to-side wiggle frees it. This guide details the method to change a halogen bulb on the most common fixtures.

Why should you not touch a halogen bulb?

The glass keeps the mark of your fingers. This grease deposit creates a hot spot, and the bulb can fail at that exact point. Handle it once cool, with a clean cloth or a glove. If you have touched it, wipe it with alcohol before fitting it back.

Fit another pencil halogen or switch to the R7s LED equivalent?

Pencil halogen bulb (R7s) R7s LED equivalent
Base and format Glass tube with two pins, several lengths depending on the fixture Same R7s base: check the tube length before buying
Heat in use Burning hot after a few minutes: never remove it with bare hands Stays warm: the glass can be handled safely
Glass and fingers Skin grease marks the quartz and shortens its life: hold it by the ceramic ends The glass can be touched without consequence, keep the clean habit as a rule
Dimmability Fits a dimmer suited to the fixture Must be marked dimmable, otherwise flicker or buzzing
Light rendering Golden warm white, very even along the whole tube Sharper rendering: choose the right temperature before buying
Life and stated warranty Replaced more often, no manufacturer warranty 2 years on 73% of the pages sampled, 5 years on 27% (sample of 33 references from the Design Bulbs collection on 28 September 2026)
Removal with power off Push sideways against the spring, one side then the other Same move, with the bulb staying cold

Should you fit another halogen or switch to LED?

Switch to LED if your dimmer accepts it or if you can leave it at maximum. The rendering is equivalent, heat and consumption drop significantly, and you replace the bulb far less often. Fit another halogen if you are attached to the golden filament of an old fixture, lit in a display window.

Replacing a pencil halogen bulb with a dimmable LED: what changes day to day

The change comes down to four points: the heat given off, consumption, compatibility with the dimmer and the resulting colour tone.

Criterion R7s halogen Dimmable R7s LED
Heat High, the fixture heats up Low
Consumption High for the same output Reduced
Dimmer Works with a standard dimmer Requires a bulb marked dimmable
Colour tone Golden warm white, immediate Depending on the choice: 2700 K to 4000 K

The rest happens at the order stage. On the same sample of 33 references on 28 September 2026, every page that states its technology is marked LED, and the stated warranty is 2 years on 73% of them, 5 years on 27%. Enough to plan the replacement calmly, without going back to the bulb aisle every season.

What problems come with replacing a halogen with an LED?

  • Buzzing: the old dimmer is not designed for a low LED load.
  • Flickering at low intensity, often the same dimmer fault.
  • Different length: a shorter LED pencil bulb holds less well in its spring.
  • Too cool a tone: a 4000 K in a living room cools the whole atmosphere.

These three pitfalls are settled before buying. Choose bulbs marked as dimmable when the wall switch has a dimmer, and measure the length with a ruler. This guide also explains what really changes when you decide to replace a halogen bulb with an LED. On colour tone, everything comes down to colour temperature: this comparison of white or yellow light helps you decide room by room.

How to change a halogen bulb in a ceiling or recessed fixture

On the ceiling, climb on a stable stepladder and cut the circuit at the consumer unit, not at the dimmer. Find the cover before pulling: a bowl to unscrew, a grille to unclip or a ring to turn a quarter turn. The bulb only comes out once this cover is removed.

The move, in order

  • Switch off at the switch, then at the breaker for the lighting circuit
  • Let the bulb cool completely before touching it
  • Remove the grille or protective glass if the fixture has one
  • Push the bulb sideways against the spring, one pin after the other
  • Hold it by its ceramic ends, never by the glass tube
  • Present the new one, engage one pin, then make the second give way
  • Refit the protection, switch the breaker back on and test the light

How to change a halogen bulb in a ceiling fixture

Unscrew the bowl or unclip the grille, then let it cool for ten minutes before touching the glass. A pencil bulb mounted vertically comes out by pushing it upwards, one pin at a time, with your other hand under the fixture to catch it. For screw-in socket models, the procedure is described in this guide on changing a ceiling bulb.

How to change a recessed halogen bulb

A recessed spotlight is freed from the front. Pry the ring, pull gently, the socket comes with the housing. Behind it, the bulb is held by two springs or by a retaining ring; without a ring, it holds by simple friction, and you have to take it out without damaging the collar. This guide shows how to remove a spotlight bulb without a retaining ring without marking the ceiling paint.

Before refitting, check the format: this article helps you identify the right base among the G4, G9 and GU10 models fitted to most spotlights.

New bulb, disappointing light: when the fixture is to blame

If the light stays dull despite a new bulb, the problem almost always comes from the fixture: yellowed diffuser, oxidised socket or missing reflector. Change the bulb once, compare. If the result does not change, it is the fixture that needs reviewing, not the reference you chose.

When it is the socket or the fixture that needs changing

  • Blackened socket or soft contacts: the spring no longer presses the pin.
  • Whistling dimmer even with a dimmable bulb.
  • Opaque diffuser: the glass has yellowed and loses part of the output.
  • Very old fixture: sometimes it is better to consider repairing a lamp rather than replacing it, a matter of value as much as desire.

On a track or rail, the logic differs: each socket is removed independently, as explained in this guide on the LED bulb on a track.

Choosing the fixture that will take the right bulb

A fixture is chosen first for its base, then for its style. Favour an E27 or G9 socket model: these are the best-served formats, and you will not depend on a single reference to light the room again. Our selection of design fixtures also reads as an inventory of bases.

For a living room or bedroom ceiling, an LED ceiling light removes the bulb question: the source is integrated and the light comes down without loss.

As accent lighting, LED wall lights avoid multiplying the points to change, while drawing a halo on the wall.
