Adult bedroom floor lamp: the right light in the right place

Place it a short distance from the wall, with the shade just above shoulder height and the bulb out of your line of sight. Then 2700 K, adjustable brightness and a contained output: in an adult bedroom, a floor lamp lights a book, a wall or a floor, never the whole room.

Which floor lamp for an adult bedroom?

A slim stem, a shade at shoulder height, a light you can dim. Across a survey of 117 listings in our collection on 28 October 2026, black dresses 53% of the models and 56% take a tube shape, the format that slips into a corner.

Column, arc or reading lamp: what each shape really solves

Column floor lamp (tube) Arc floor lamp Reading floor lamp
What it lights The wall and floor in indirect light The reading corner, with no base in the way The book and the shoulder, on one side of the bed
Footprint Small: it lives against the wall Heavy base directly under the arc Small, but it needs a socket nearby
Shape in our catalogue Tube: 56% of the survey of 114 listings (28/10/2026) Arc: 12% of the same survey Round: 25% of the same survey
Dominant socket E27: 67% of the survey of 103 listings E27 in most cases Integrated LED or E27 depending on the model
Dimming Yes on 32% of the survey of 98 listings Check listing by listing The decisive criterion: it is its primary use

The adult bedroom floor lamp collection brings together 1,300 references as of 28 October 2026: enough to find the stem that fits under a window or in a narrow corner.

Floor lamp definition: what sets it apart from a standing lamp

A floor lamp is a light fixture whose stem rests on the floor and whose source sits above 100 cm, with no wall fixing. The standing lamp follows the same principle, often with an adjustable height and for occasional use.

Of the 63 listings in our 28 October 2026 survey that state their mounting, 53% are freestanding: a floor lamp does not replace a wall light, it fills the empty space.

The rest comes down to silhouette. A designer floor lamp for ambience chosen for its curve holds the room even when switched off, and that is often what separates two models of the same size.

Which light fixture for an adult bedroom depending on the surface

From 10 m², a 150 cm stem is enough. Above 15 m², an arched or offset model fills the corner without hugging the wall. Under 9 m², a wall-mounted reading lamp frees up the floor.

Configuration Surface Shade height Use
Straight stem, tube shape 9 to 13 m² 140 to 160 cm Free corner, indirect light
Arched or offset model Over 15 m² 170 to 190 cm Armchair, reading without shadow
Adjustable reading lamp All surfaces 110 to 130 cm Headboard, reading only

A cocooning bedroom is built on this gap: a trendy adult bedroom light fixture stays discreet by day and comes into its own in the evening.

The most common format remains the tube shape, a cylindrical stem and a straight shade, with less than 30 cm of floor footprint.

Where to place a floor lamp in an adult bedroom?

In the free corner furthest from the bed, 10 or 15 cm from the wall, or next to the reading armchair. The passage between the door and the bed stays clear: that is where you bump into the stem when getting up at night.

At what height should the base and shade sit?

A shade between 110 and 130 cm for reading seated, between 150 and 170 cm to light a corner. The reliable marker: the bulb falls above the shoulder, never in the line of sight.

Position Shade height Effect achieved
Near the bed 110 to 130 cm Reading without dazzling the other person
In a corner 150 to 170 cm Wash of light on the wall
Near an armchair 140 to 160 cm Shoulder lit, face clear

A freestanding reading lamp solves the question differently: the arm sits at 120 cm and turns towards the page, without raising the whole unit.

The full calculation, including for an attic bedroom where the slope cuts the height, is in our guide on what height to choose for your floor lamp.

What to check before committing to a bedroom floor lamp

  • Measure the height of the stem, not the total height of the shade
  • Check that the switch is within reach once you are lying down
  • Choose a base heavy enough not to tip over at the first sweep of the broom
  • Locate the socket before fixing the model in its corner
  • Prefer an E27 socket: it accounts for 67% of the survey of 103 listings in our catalogue (28/10/2026)
  • Look at dimming if the bedroom also serves as an office

Two possible heights and you cannot decide? Write to us from the talk about your bedroom with us page: we validate the model and the placement with you before you drill into the wall.

If the whole room needs redoing, the bedroom and office lighting project starts from the same plan: wall light, ceiling light and floor lamp share the roles.

The offset: lighting without cluttering

An arm extending 40 to 60 cm brings the light out from the wall without moving the base forward. It is the solution when the bedside table is taken and no socket remains behind the bed.

The offset also replaces the bedside lamp when space is short, provided you choose a shade closed at the bottom: our guide to choosing your bedside lamp well details this point.

The models gathered in offset floor lamp cover this case, including on a stud wall where you do not drill.

How many watts for a bedroom, and which light?

Allow 6 to 8 W in LED for a reading floor lamp, meaning 400 to 800 lumens. Watts no longer say much since LED: it is the output that settles the question, and dimming that separates reading from falling asleep.

Colour temperature: 2700 K or 3000 K

2700 K for a bedroom, 3000 K for the room where you work. The gap looks small on paper, it is clear on the wall: 2700 K leans amber, 3000 K cools the whites and hardens the shadows.

Tint Rendering Use in a bedroom
2700 K Warm white, amber Reading, waking up, relaxation corner
3000 K Neutral white Office, dressing room, mirror

To translate output into real need, our article on how many lumens for a bedroom gives the benchmarks by surface.

2700 K bulbs with an E27 socket remain the simplest replacement on a floor lamp already in place.

Which type of bulb for a bedroom?

E27 socket, 2700 K, dimmable. Of the 103 listings in our 28 October 2026 survey that state a socket, E27 accounts for 67%: it is the standard that leaves the most choice, including filament bulbs.

The rest of the choice, between filament, smoked glass and small E14 socket, is in which bulb for a bedroom.

What is the dominant tone of your bedroom?

Which LED to choose for a bedroom without getting it wrong?

An LED with an E27 socket, 2700 K, dimmable, in IP20. In our survey of 117 listings on 28 October 2026, IP20 is stated on 100% of them and the 2-year warranty on 91%: in a dry room, durability over time matters more than sealing.

IP20: why it is enough in a bedroom

IP20 protects against touch and dust, nothing more. A bedroom has neither splashing nor condensation: moving to IP44 brings no benefit and sometimes closes the shade over the light.

Before deciding, the Designix Google listing shows buyer reviews, verifiable in one click.

The dimmer, what really changes in the evening

A dimmer takes the same floor lamp from reading to bedtime without changing the bulb. The bulb still has to be dimmable: E27 dimmer bulbs are so by construction.

In the 28 October 2026 survey, 32% of the 98 listings that specify dimming announce it. Check this line before buying, it changes daily use.

The evening question remains: a warm, low light is better than a strong, diffused light. Our article on which light to sleep details the last quarter of an hour.

The questions we are asked most about bedroom lighting

Which light fixture for an adult bedroom?
A floor lamp with a slim stem placed against the wall, complemented by a low source near the bed. In our survey of 117 references on 28 October 2026, 56% are tube shapes: the vertical stem remains the easiest to slip into a corner without blocking movement.
How many watts for a bedroom?
Fewer than in a living room: a bedroom floor lamp lights by proximity, not by surface. Aim for a modest bulb and adjust the brightness — dimming is present on 32% of our survey of 98 listings on 28 October 2026, and that is the criterion to look at before watts.
Which type of bulb for a bedroom?
E27 socket, present on 67% of our survey of 103 listings on 28 October 2026, with a 2700 K tint. E27 leaves the choice of output and can be replaced without changing the fixture, unlike an integrated LED.
How to light a bedroom?
Several low sources rather than a single point on the ceiling: a floor lamp, a bedside lamp, a wall light or a reading lamp. Each is adjusted separately, and that independence is what lets you light without waking the other person.
Which LED to choose for a bedroom?
An LED with a warm temperature, adjustable if it is used for reading, and protected to IP20 — which is the case for 100% of our survey of 117 listings on 28 October 2026, sufficient for a dry room. Look for legibility of rendering, not the number of lumens displayed in large print.
