Handcrafted driftwood lamp: how to choose it right

This article is also available in French: Lampe bois flotté artisanale

Turn the piece over and look at its edges: wood that has spent time at sea shows eroded fibres, hollowed growth rings and wormholes, never clean saw-cut angles. Weigh it in your hand, it surprises for its size. Then check the socket, the weight and the seating height before choosing.

How do you recognise a handcrafted driftwood lamp?

Three signs are enough: eroded rather than sawn edges, grain hollowed by salt, and a weight that surprises for the size. A handcrafted piece keeps these traces visible under an oil finish. Smooth, uniform, lightweight wood has not spent time at sea, it is new wood aged in a workshop.

Genuine driftwood, reconstituted driftwood, aged new wood: what you can see

Genuine driftwood Reconstituted driftwood Aged new wood
Surface appearance Hollowed veins, edges softened by salt Even tone, repeating knots Sharp grain, crisp edges
Signs of time at sea Shipworm holes, salt and sand embedded in the fibres No traces, uniformly sanded surface None
Weight in the hand Light, open fibres Dense and regular Dense, sometimes heavy
What it demands when assembling Stabilise and treat before drilling Little rework, direct assembly Sanding and finishing required
Best suited to Bedside lamp and table lamp, one-off piece Pendant and repeatable model Floor lamp and load-bearing structure

How do you recognise driftwood that has really spent time at sea?

Salt and wind work the wood differently from sanding. Look at the ends: they fray into a blunt point, never a clean cut.

  • Edges softened along the whole length, not just at the corners
  • Growth rings raised, soft wood wears away before hard wood
  • Shipworm holes and old insect galleries, often filled with sand
  • Patina grey on the surface, darker deep in the cracks

This patina can be fed: an oiled piece regains a warm brown without losing its hollows. The species that respond best are detailed in our article on the wooden lamp and its patina.

What 28 references from our catalogue show

Across a survey of 28 references from the Lampe de Chevet Bois Flotté collection on 27 October 2026, the E27 socket equips 71% of the completed listings (26 out of 28), LED 11%, E14 7% and G9 4%. Wood is declared on 100% of the survey, as is the 2-year warranty and the IP20 rating.

The full collection holds 256 references on the same date. Enough to choose a format instead of settling for an isolated piece: browse the driftwood bedside lamp when the nightstand is narrow. IP20 means dry interior only, worth keeping in mind for a bathroom.

Where to find driftwood, and how to prepare it?

Look above the high tide line, in the strandline, just after a spring tide. The wood should be dry, odourless and come away without force. Check your local authority's collecting rules before you set off: they vary from one coastline to another and often limit quantities.

Where to find driftwood in the wild?

Open beaches facing the sea yield the most worn pieces. Sheltered coves keep wood still waterlogged and heavier to carry.

  • High tide line: the band of strandline where wood washes up and dries
  • After a storm: fresh pieces arrive in numbers, but they are soaked
  • River mouths and estuaries: rolled wood, often thinner and harder
  • Rocky shores: wedged pieces, already bleached by salt

Collecting wood that has already washed up avoids felling a tree for a lampshade. Our selection of eco-friendly lighting starts from this principle.

Does driftwood need treating?

Yes, at the very least brushing, rinsing in fresh water and slow drying before assembly. Residual salt attracts moisture and attacks the metal parts of the socket. Wood brought back from the beach should dry for several weeks before drilling, otherwise it moves and splits around the hole.

What can you do with driftwood in a home?

Place it where light grazes a wall: a headboard, a hallway, the empty corner of a living room. A driftwood bedside lamp sits at seating height, a floor lamp fills a corner, a pendant lights a table. Wood absorbs harsh reflections and warms the light.

In a living room, the piece sits at the end of a sofa or near a low sideboard, never in the middle of a walkway. Placement guidelines are detailed in our article on wooden lighting in the living room.

Driftwood bedside lamp: the right height

Allow 45 to 60 cm between the top of the mattress and the bottom of the shade. Below that, you read in your own shadow. Above it, the light goes to the ceiling and the bedroom stays dull.

  • Height: the shade at shoulder height once you are sitting up in bed
  • Switch: reachable without stretching, on the cord or at the cord head
  • Diameter: a shade wider than it is tall lights better than a narrow cone
  • Weight: solid wood tips over less than a slim piece on a narrow base

Other room guidelines are in our guide to the bedside lamp in the bedroom.

Floor lamp and pendant: the measurements that prevent mistakes

A floor lamp should be chosen between 1.40 m and 1.70 m in total height to light a seat. A pendant hangs 75 cm above a dining table and 85 cm above a worktop.

Format Mounting height Result
Bedside lamp 45 to 60 cm above the mattress Clear reading, no cast shadow
Floor lamp 1.40 to 1.70 m total height Lights the seat, not the ceiling
Pendant over a table 75 cm from the tabletop Faces lit, table clear
Pendant over a worktop 85 cm from the surface No glare while cooking

For a reading corner, compare the driftwood floor lamp with a hanging piece: the first can be moved, the second frees up the floor. If you are still unsure, our article on the Scandinavian wooden pendant settles it according to ceiling height.

The socket also decides the effect: an E27 takes a filament bulb that gives that amber light. See how to choose your bulb according to the wood tone.

Which room will the driftwood lamp live in?

Hesitating between two formats for the same room? Describe the surface and the furniture to the workshop, and we will answer on measurements before you order.

How do you make a driftwood lamp yourself?

You need a drill, a wood bit, an E27 socket kit with cable and switch, and a base wide enough that the piece does not tip over. Drill the cable channel along the axis, fix the socket, test it dry before closing up. The wood must be perfectly dry.

How to make driftwood lamps, step by step

Only one rule matters: the cable must never rub against a raw edge. Run it through a sleeve, or through a hole that has been sanded and then varnished.

Preparing your driftwood before assembling the lamp

  • Rinse in clean water and brush off the sand before any drying
  • Leave to dry flat and sheltered, never in direct sunlight
  • Set aside pieces that keep a damp smell or crumble
  • Sand the edges that catch, without erasing the veins
  • Treat against insects, then finish with oil or matt varnish
  • Drill a pilot hole before screwing the socket or the bracket

If the piece is too thin to house a socket, it becomes a pendant support. The matching assembly is described in making a hanging light.

What a home assembly cannot guarantee

A home assembly guarantees neither electrical compliance, nor how the wood holds up over time, nor any recourse in case of a fault. Across the survey of 28 references on 27 October 2026, CE certification is declared on 96% of the listings and the 2-year warranty on 100%. A workshop stands behind what you cannot test alone.

The price of a designer lamp does not pay for the wood: it covers the cable routing, the testing and the warranty. That is where the difference lies with a piece assembled on a Sunday.

To locate a workshop, the Designix Google listing shows its current rating and reviews, verifiable in one click. You can also read customer feedback before deciding.

Driftwood and lighting: the questions that keep coming back

How do you recognise driftwood?
It is lighter than a fresh branch, its edges are softened and its veins hollowed by salt and sand. Look too for the small shipworm holes: they signal real time at sea, which no workshop sanding can reproduce.
Where to find driftwood in the wild?
On the strandline, just above the high tide line, and especially after spring tides that turn over the sandbanks. Check the local authority's collecting rules: they vary from one coastline to another.
How do you prepare driftwood?
Rinse it, brush off the sand, then leave it to dry flat and sheltered, never in direct sunlight which splits the fibres. Once dry, sand the edges that catch and keep the veins: that is what makes the piece.
How do you clean driftwood?
A barely damp cloth and a soft brush are enough for everyday care. Avoid soaking the piece and harsh products: sea wood stays open-grained, it drinks whatever you give it.
Does driftwood need treating?
Yes, as soon as the piece comes into the home: an anti-insect treatment, then a finish that seals the surface. Wood collected at the seaside keeps galleries and moisture, and that is what cracks a socket over time.
