Wood and black pendant light: the right light, room by room
This article is also available in French: Suspension bois et noir
Measure the tabletop, set the drop between 75 and 85 cm, then choose the socket before the colour. A wood and black pendant light comes down to three dimensions (shade diameter, suspension height, distance to the table) and one light temperature. Style only comes after.
What is a wood and black pendant light, and which style does it suit?
A wood and black pendant light combines a wooden shade or structure with a black metal frame. The wood warms the black, which structures the room. The light travels downwards and diffuses through the slats, giving a softer glow than a solid ceiling light.
The pendant light collection brings these models together in several shapes, from cylinder to dome. Most play on the same contrast: a dark mass, a light material, a warm halo on the ceiling.
Style then depends on the fineness of the wood and the design of the metal. Light oak with a slim frame leans Scandinavian, solid walnut leans contemporary, an open cage leans industrial. A Scandinavian wooden pendant light often pairs light slats with a black textile cable: it is the simplest version to place in an already furnished interior.
Industrial wood and black pendant light: black metal meets raw wood
The wood keeps its knots, the metal stays matte. This pairing takes exposed bulbs and open structures, above an oak table as well as in an open kitchen.
- Cage: the light comes out through the sides, the wall receives patterns
- Tube: long silhouette, best kept for worktops
- Round: the most versatile, no angle to catch the eye
- Solid wood: visually heavier, to place over a large tabletop
Wood and black chandelier: the multi-source version above a table
A wood and black chandelier spreads several sources along a bar or a circle. The lighting becomes more even over a large table, with no dark zone in the centre.
The result depends on the spacing between sockets: allow one source every 60 to 80 cm of tabletop. A wooden chandelier is also chosen for its stem height, because the lower it hangs, the more it marks the room.
For a dining room, the multi-arm dining room chandelier version requires more careful wiring than a simple pendant light, and often a ceiling hook suited to the weight.
Which wood and black pendant light should you choose for each room?
Choose the diameter first, the room second. A table for eight needs a shade of at least 50 cm, or several small sources in a row. A bedroom takes a more compact model, placed near the bed rather than in the centre of the ceiling.
In the living room, the pendant light goes above a coffee table or a reading corner, never in line with the television. A large-diameter pendant chandelier replaces a ceiling light there without killing the evening mood.
Kitchen and island: light the worktop, not the faces
Above an island, the source must fall on the chopping area. Allow one pendant light per metre of island, aligned on its axis, with a socket facing downwards.
A wood and black metal kitchen chandelier plays a practical role here: it lights the hob and echoes the wood of the cabinet fronts. Height matters more than style, otherwise the light goes behind the cook's shoulder.
The rest is planned together: worktop lighting, meals, circulation. Our kitchen and dining room lighting project starts from that plan, not from a catalogue.
Bedroom: a low, side source
In a bedroom, forget the centre of the ceiling. A wood and black pendant light hangs 60 cm above the bedside table, with a warm bulb and a dimmer.
- 2700 K: the temperature to favour in the evening
- 30 to 40 cm: enough diameter for a bedroom
- Dimmer: useful if the pendant light also serves as a night light
- IP20: sufficient, the room is dry
Wood and black ceiling light when height is short
Below a 2.40 m ceiling, a pendant light becomes an obstacle. The ceiling light keeps the material and the contrast, with nothing in the sightline.
A wood and black metal bedroom ceiling light is fitted like a classic pendant light, but flush to the ceiling. It lights wider and less strongly downwards, which suits small spaces.
Wood and black pendant lights from the Designix selection
At what height and with what diameter should you hang a wood and black pendant light?
Place the bottom of the shade between 75 and 85 cm above the tabletop. That is the range that lights the plates without hiding faces. Above an island, go down to 85 cm from the worktop.
The drop above the tabletop
Height is set before purchase, not after. Measure the floor, the tabletop, then the ceiling: the available cable length must cover the gap.
| Tabletop width | Shade diameter | Drop above the tabletop |
|---|---|---|
| 80 to 100 cm | 30 to 40 cm | 75 to 80 cm |
| 120 to 160 cm | 40 to 50 cm | 80 to 85 cm |
| 180 cm and more | 60 cm and more, or 2 to 3 sources | 85 cm |
Two pendant lights side by side need at least 60 cm between axes, otherwise the halos overlap. The details of the adjustments depending on the table are described in our guide on the dining room pendant light.
The fixing point matters as much as the dimension. A solid slab takes a classic hook, a false ceiling needs a reinforcement or a suitable ceiling rose: the assembly is detailed in the tutorial to install a hanging light.
Large volume and high ceiling
Beyond a 3 m ceiling, the pendant light must come down to stay useful. A room 5 m high with a light flush to the ceiling only lights the void.
- Drop: 90 cm to 1 m above the tabletop in a tall volume
- Diameter: at least 60 cm to hold the distance
- Cable: black textile extension rather than a bare cable
- Source: power revised upwards, the bulb lights from further away
The models that hold a large void are gathered in the large diameter pendant light selection.
If you are still unsure about the drop or the diameter, describe your room and your table via the describe your room to the team page: we answer on dimensions, not on a catalogue.
Which socket and which bulb for a wood and black pendant light?
The socket decides the shape of the visible bulb and the available power. On an open pendant light, the bulb is visible: better to choose a model that owns it.
E27, G9, GU10: which one for which use
| Socket | When to choose it | Suitable bulb |
|---|---|---|
| E27 | Large shade, solid wood, a single source | LED filament, 8 to 12 W |
| G9 | Several small sockets on the same arm | Compact LED, 2700 K |
| GU10 | Source directed at the worktop | Beam LED, 3000 K |
In our black metal and wood family, the socket is mostly E27. On a count of 53 references from our wall light collection in this family as of 28 October 2026, the E27 socket accounts for 58% and the IP20 rating is declared on 100% of the count, for 137 references in the collection on the same date. The large format therefore remains the norm, including on the matching wall pieces.
The matches between socket, power and temperature are gathered in the guide to bulb types.
2700 K versus 3000 K: what changes under a wooden shade
Wood filters the light and warms it. A 3000 K bulb under light slats comes out almost white, while a 2700 K keeps the wood golden and the black metal deep.
- 2700 K: meals, bedroom, reading corner
- 3000 K: kitchen and worktop, where you want to see clearly
- 8 to 12 W: enough power for a table of six
- Dimmer: check on the bulb side, not all are compatible
To avoid mistakes, the selection of 2700 K E27 bulbs covers the two most common formats under this type of shade.
