Smoked glass ceiling lights soften the light without darkening the room: the glass tint filters the rays, reduces glare and casts dark reflections on the ceiling. Allow for a small diameter of 12 to 20 cm for a bedroom, hallway or corridor, and a large round of 440 to 590 mm above a living room table.
What light does a smoked glass ceiling light give?
The smoked tint softens the light: it filters the rays, reduces glare and casts dark reflections on the ceiling, without darkening the room. Depending on the model, the bulb is changed on an E27, E14 or G9 base, or the LED source is integrated. Some models accept a dimmer.
What the smoked tint changes in the diffusion of light
Clear glass lets more brightness through, while smoked glass softens it and keeps the ceiling light discreet even when switched on. Amber glass, for its part, warms the perceived tint: it is the choice for rooms with light walls. For a dimly lit room, a model that combines smoked and clear glass keeps the smoked effect without losing brightness, like the white glass, which is brighter.
E27, E14, G9 base or LED source: what effect on the ceiling?
In the selection, 57% of the models have an E27 base, 14% an integrated LED source, 7% an E14 and 7% a G9. An E27 base lets you choose the colour temperature of the bulb, around 2700 K for warm light and 4000 K for a more neutral effect. An integrated LED source cannot be replaced, but it can often be dimmed.

Which room should a smoked glass ceiling light go in?
Smoked glass can go in any room, but the formats differ: the bedroom accounts for 93% of the models in the selection, the living room and hallway 79%, the kitchen and corridor 71%. Large rounds and ovals cover a dining table; small diameters dress a bedroom, hallway or corridor.
Living room and dining room: large round or oval formats
Above a table, aim for a diameter of 440 to 590 mm to cover the surface without dazzling the guests. The Thalio oval ceiling light at 350 mm suits a small table or a wide corridor, while the Wynneth round ceiling light at 500 mm is intended more for a living room or an office. For a large living space, the Tesnelina multi-globe ceiling light spreads the light over ten globes.
Bedroom, hallway and corridor: small diameters in black smoked tint
In a bedroom, a diameter of 15 to 20 cm is enough: the Fumalia ball and the Fumeline drop light up without overwhelming the bed. In a hallway, favour a compact model that marks the verticality, like the Vitrallo cylindrical model at 16 cm. For a dark or shallow room, a clearer model can be found in the small ceiling lights for bedrooms.
Which diameter and shape should you choose for a smoked glass ceiling light?
The diameter follows the surface to be lit and the available height. The models in the collection range from the small format of 12 to 20 cm to the large ceiling light of 590 mm in diameter, via the rounds of 350 to 500 mm and the oval shapes with several diffusers. Under a low ceiling, stay with a shallow model.
From the small ceiling light of 12 to 20 cm to the large model of 590 mm
A small format goes near the wall or above a piece of furniture, while a large round requires distance. The round accounts for half of the shapes in the selection, ahead of the ball, the globe, the drop and the tube.
Ceiling height: how much space to leave between the glass and the furniture
Allow for a minimum of 70 cm between the bottom of the light and a worktop or table, and more if the room is heavily used. A model 110 mm deep, like the Wynneth round, lets the eye pass through; a 240 mm cylinder hangs lower and should be positioned accordingly.
| Format | Measured dimensions | Suitable rooms | Model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four compact lamps | Ø 12 cm | Living room, bedroom, kitchen, corridor, hallway | Sorrel |
| Drop | Ø 15 cm | Bedroom | Fumeline |
| Cylinder with cage | Ø 16 cm | Hallway | Vitrallo |
| Compact ball | Ø 20 cm | Bedroom | Fumalia |
| Oval round | Ø 350 mm, H 162 mm | Living room, hallway, corridor | Thalio |
| Five round diffusers | Ø 590 mm, H 240 mm | Large living space | Fumiro |
Smoked, clear, amber or black glass: which tint for which effect?
Smoked glass softens the light and casts dark reflections; clear glass lets more brightness through; amber glass warms the perceived tint. In this selection, 86% of the models play on smoked, 43% combine clear, 43% black, 14% amber and 14% brown.
Smoked glass, clear glass and amber glass in the same room
Several models combine two tints on the same ceiling light, which makes it possible to match the light to the walls and furniture without multiplying the finishes. A very light room supports a strong smoked tint, a dark room prefers a combination of smoked and clear. For a warmer effect, look at the amber glass models, and for a sharp contrast, the modern black ceiling lights.
Light smoked glass ceiling lights: when to choose a brighter variant
When the room lacks natural light, a light smoked tint or clear glass diffuses more directly. In that case, stay with a light base or a combination where the clear glass dominates.
Smoked glass ceiling light with or without a metal cage: which style?
Two families coexist: clean shapes, ball, drop, tube, globe or ribbed diffuser, and models with a black or steel metal cage, with an industrial spirit. The style recorded in the selection is contemporary for half of the models, modern for 29%, industrial for 21%, minimalist or retro for 7%.
Smoked glass and black steel cage: the industrial register
A cage protects the glass and draws a graphic silhouette, useful in a hallway or corridor. To go further in this register, compare with the industrial style in black metal and the black industrial style ceiling lights.
Ball, drop, tube shapes and ribbed or fluted glass
Ribbed or fluted glass adds a pattern of light on the walls and ceiling. Reserve the texture for a single light per room and leave the other surfaces smooth. Glass and black metal dominate here, alongside possible combinations with brass in the combining glass with brass.
How do you install and maintain a smoked glass ceiling light?
All the models in the collection have an IP20 protection rating: they are intended for dry rooms, sheltered from water splashes. Installation is done on the ceiling, on an existing cable outlet. Smoked glass is cleaned with a soft, slightly damp cloth, without abrasive products.
Fixing the ceiling light and connecting it to the electrical network
Switch off the circuit breaker before any work, identify the live, neutral and earth wires, then fix the mounting plate onto the existing junction box. For dimmable models, like those gathered in the dimmer-compatible models, check the compatibility of the dimmer with the source before assembly.
Cleaning a smoked glass diffuser without dulling it
A microfibre cloth is enough for dust. For a mark, a little soapy water then immediate drying, without alcohol or abrasive, which attack the glass tint and the finish of the base.
How do you match the smoked glass ceiling light with the decor and the other lights?
The match is played on the glass tint and the finish of the base: a smoked ceiling light with a black base goes well with a glass wall light of the same shade or a clear glass lampshade. Glass is present on 100% of the models and metal on 36%, which makes harmony easier.
Matching ceiling light, wall light and bedside lamp in the same spirit
A ball glass wall light picks up the vocabulary of the ceiling light without competing with it if it is placed lower and switched on separately. A clear glass lampshade also works, because it diffuses a lower and more concentrated light. For a softer spirit, the vintage-style glass ceiling lights keep the same family of tint.
Choosing the number of light points depending on the use of the room
A ceiling light alone suits a hallway or a corridor. In a living room, add a low point for reading, and in a bedroom a bedside light. The LED lights for bedrooms and the LED ceiling lights with a contemporary design complete the set without changing register.
Frequently asked questions about smoked glass ceiling lights
White smoked glass ceiling lights: how do you choose a lighter variant?
A light variant relies on clear glass or on the lightest smoked tint, which lets more light through. Several models combine smoked glass and clear glass: the proportion of each tint decides the level of brightness, to be chosen according to the natural light in the room.
Which bulb should you put in a smoked glass ceiling light?
It all depends on the base indicated on the product sheet: E27 for the majority of models, E14 for a four-lamp model, G9 for small globes, or an integrated LED source that cannot be replaced. Respect the maximum power mentioned, without exceeding that of the light.
Is a smoked glass ceiling light suitable for a bedroom?
Yes, it is the most represented room in this selection. Small diameters of 15 to 20 cm, in the shape of a ball or a drop, go above a bed without overwhelming it, and the glass tint softens the evening light.
Can you install a smoked glass ceiling light in a bathroom?
All the models in this collection have an IP20 protection rating, intended for dry rooms. They are therefore not intended for a bathroom or a room exposed to water splashes. In a bathroom, you need a light with a higher protection rating.
Can a ball glass wall light accompany a smoked glass ceiling light?
Yes, provided you keep the same family of tint and base finish. A ball glass wall light picks up the vocabulary of the ceiling light without competing with it, especially if it is placed lower and switched on separately: the ceiling light lights the room, the wall light creates a secondary point.
To choose among the full range of our lights, start from the room and the diameter: a 500 mm round for a living room, a 20 cm ball for a bedroom, a 16 cm cylinder for a hallway. The lighting a living room in black gathers the models with a dark base, and the LED sources with a black base make maintenance easier. You can also explore the Designix lighting range to complete an entire room.
Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service accompany every order. The models in the collection are guaranteed for two years for the majority of them, three years for the rest: the mention appears on each product sheet.
