Start with the room, then the number of light points: a five-arm fixture for a large living room, a compact cylinder for a hallway or entryway. Clear glass ceiling lights let light through without tinting it, so the result comes from the bulb and the shape of the glass.

Which clear glass ceiling light for which room?

Clear glass works in every room of the house: bedroom, living room, hallway, kitchen and entryway. For a large living room, a five-arm model such as the large five-arm Veldra or Sildora fills the ceiling; for a hallway or entryway, a small cylinder such as the Calvino lantern or Sorvesisto is enough.

Room, format and clear glass ceiling light model
Room What matters Indicative format Example in the collection
Living room Several light points, generous diameter Five-arm fixture, around 90 cm in diameter Veldra, Sildora
Bedroom Soft light, compact format Ball or drop, 15 to 30 cm Fumalia, Fumeline
Kitchen Crisp lighting above the counter Cylinder or bowl, ø17 cm Striata, Sorvesisto
Hallway and entryway Little bulk at the ceiling Small diameter, ø16 cm Calvino, Sorvesisto
Bathroom Suitable protection rating IP44, cylindrical shape Valvesina

How to choose the format according to the room

Check the floor area before settling on a diameter. In a room under 10 m², a model 15 to 20 cm in diameter takes up ceiling space without overwhelming it. Above 25 m², aim for several light points: that is the case with black models designed for the living room.

Glass shade for a bedside lamp and bedroom ceiling light, what is the difference?

A shade screws onto a table lamp and lights a nearby area; a ceiling light is fixed to the ceiling and lights the whole room. A glass shade is chosen according to the socket diameter, the size of the globe and the tint: clear it lights widely, smoked it reduces glare. See also the bedroom ceiling lights.

To compare with the other families in the range, browse the complete lighting catalogue.

What kind of light does a clear glass ceiling light give?

A clear glass ceiling light does not tint the light: the result comes from the bulb. With an E14 socket, the glass stays thin and compact; with an E27, you have more bulbs to choose from; with an integrated LED as on Veldra or Sildora, the light is set at the factory and the bulb cannot be replaced.

What the bulb tint changes

The glass lets the colour of the bulb through as it is. As a general guide, a bulb around 2700 K gives warm light, 3000 K stays neutral and comfortable in a living room, 4000 K leans towards cool white and suits a worktop. These values describe the bulb, not a feature of our models.

Clear glass, direct or diffused light?

Clear glass lets light through without filtering it. Ribbed or fluted glass breaks it into fine lines and softens the glare. For a ceiling light that can be dimmed, look instead at the dimmable LED ceiling lights, or the modern LED ceiling lights for a flatter design.

How to choose between clear, smoked and amber glass?

Clear glass gives crisp light and lets the bulb show. Smoked glass softens it and reduces glare, useful in a bedroom. Amber or gold glass warms it slightly. This collection is mostly clear, with a few smoked pieces or gold frames.

When to prefer a smoked version

Smoked glass suits rooms where the fixture is looked at for a long time, a bedroom or an entryway visible from the sofa. The collection includes a few smoked pieces, among them Calixto and Fumalia. Compare them with the smoked glass models.

Clear glass and gold frame, which combinations?

Clear glass goes with black metal, brass and steel. A gold frame warms the room without tinting the light, as on Alavesica and its five cylinders or Pavorna. For a genuinely coloured tint, see the amber versions. The white glass ceiling lights play a different register, more opaline.

Round, tube, ball or globe: which clear glass shape to choose?

The shape of the glass changes how the light is distributed. The ball concentrates a crisp light point, the tube or cylinder stretches the source, the round bowl diffuses more widely at the ceiling, the globe multiplies the light points. Choose according to the room and the available height.

Glass tube wall light, the same shape on the wall

The tube repeats well on the wall: a clear glass tube wall light accompanies a ceiling light from the same family and keeps a consistent line between wall and ceiling. The vintage glass ceiling lights use the same principle with globes.

Ball or globe, what result for a bedroom?

The ball concentrates a crisp light point, the globe multiplies the points and gives a softer volume. In a bedroom, a 20 cm ball such as Fumalia lights without taking over, in line with its product sheet. The gold metal ceiling lights often pair this shape with a fine frame.

How do you install a clear glass ceiling light?

Installation depends on the protection rating and the socket. In a dry room, an IP20 ceiling light is fixed to the ceiling on a mounting box; in a bathroom, you need an IP44 model such as the Valvesina IP44 model. Check the E14, E27 or LED socket before choosing the bulb.

IP20 and IP44, in which rooms to install a glass ceiling light?

An IP20 ceiling light goes in a dry room: living room, bedroom, hallway, entryway, kitchen outside splash zones. In a bathroom, aim for a protection rating suited to splashes. As for the frame, black metal remains the most common, see the black metal frames.

E14 or E27 socket, check the socket before installation

Switch off the power at the breaker, re-read the socket stated on the product sheet, then fix the fixture to a mounting box. The number of wires and the screws vary from model to model: follow the supplied instructions rather than a standard assembly imagined from memory.

Which clear glass ceiling light for a small room or an entryway?

For a small room, a hallway or an entryway, favour a contained diameter and shallow depth. Calvino, Sorvesisto, Striata and Fumeline offer diameters from 15 to 18.5 cm, while Veldra and Sildora take up a large living room. For very high rooms, a glass chandelier may work; for targeted lighting, a track spotlight complements a ceiling light; and for a decorative effect, crystal and chrome offer an alternative to clear glass.

Small diameters at the ceiling

A deep fixture overwhelms a narrow entryway and casts a shadow on the floor. Under about twenty centimetres in diameter, the fixture stays discreet and the light falls straight down. To change the tint in this format, take a look at the green glass.

Calvino and Sorvesisto, which compact formats?

The Calvino lantern pairs clear glass with a bronze frame, in an E27 socket. Sorvesisto plays the gold ribbed cylinder in E14, with thinner glass and a tighter light. Two approaches for the same ceiling space constraint.

How do you care for a clear glass ceiling light?

Glass is cleaned with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive product, without taking the fixture down. The metal parts, brass, steel or aluminium, are dusted dry. For ribbed or fluted glass, wipe the cloth along the direction of the ribs to avoid marks.

Glass and metal, two care routines

Avoid scouring pads on polished parts, and never immerse the whole fixture in water. For a light finish that is easy to care for, see the white LED ceiling lights.

Ribbed or fluted glass, how to clean it without marks?

Wipe the cloth along the direction of the ribs or flutes: a circular motion leaves a film in the grooves. Work in daylight to spot any remaining marks, and let it air dry rather than using a dry cloth that charges the glass with static.

E14, E27 or integrated LED: what to choose for a glass ceiling light?

The E14 socket fits most models, with thin glass and compact bulbs. The E27 concerns wider ceiling lights, such as Calvino or Striata, and leaves more choice of bulbs. Integrated LEDs, Veldra and Sildora, cannot be replaced.

Sockets and bulbs for clear glass ceiling lights
Socket Bulb to plan for What it changes Models concerned
E14 Small screw socket Thin glass, compact bulbs Belisama, Bellinora, Serlinissa, Sorvesisto, Lunève, Silraneno, Pavorna, Alavesica
E27 Standard socket More choice of bulbs, wider glass Calvino, Calixto, Fumalia, Fumeline, Striata, Valvesina
Integrated LED Non-replaceable bulb Flatter format, light set at the factory Veldra, Sildora

Integrated LED ceiling lights, Veldra and Sildora

On these two models, the LED is integrated and cannot be replaced. The whole unit is flatter and the light stays the same over time; if it fails, the fixture is what needs changing, whereas an E14 or E27 just needs a new bulb. See also the gold LED ceiling lights.

E14, why does this small socket dominate the collection?

The E14 takes compact bulbs that fit inside a thin globe: Belisama, Bellinora, Serlinissa, Lunève, Silraneno, Pavorna and Alavesica fall into this category. The E27 fits the wider glass, Calvino, Calixto, Fumalia, Fumeline, Striata and Valvesina. A decisive criterion when choosing, as on the modern black ceiling lights.

Clear glass, ribbed glass, fluted glass: what are the differences?

Clear glass lets the bulb show and lets all the light through. Ribbed or fluted glass keeps the clarity but breaks the view with regular lines, as on the Striata ribbed bowl or the Sorvesisto cylinder. Valvesina combines fluted glass and IP44 protection.

Ribbed glass wall light, the same pattern on the wall

The pattern repeats on the wall: a ribbed glass wall light accompanies a ceiling light from the same family and keeps the look consistent. The industrial style black metal ceiling lights often use this glass, and the reading stays soft even with the bulb on.

Valvesina, fluted glass and IP44 protection

Valvesina combines a fluted glass cylinder and an IP44 rating, which makes it suitable for a bathroom. None of these finishes tints the light in place of the bulb: they only change the way the glass reads, lit or unlit. The regular lines pair well with the industrial style black ceiling lights.

Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service accompany every order. Not sure about the format? Measure the room, note the socket you want, then compare two models side by side before confirming your basket.

Frequently asked questions about clear glass ceiling lights

How do you restyle a glass table?

Glass is mainly restyled through the light placed above it: a clear glass ceiling light above a glass table extends the transparency without weighing it down. Switching to smoked glass changes the light tint without touching the furniture.

Covering a glass table with wood, what should you know?

Covering a glass table with wood removes the transparency and adds thickness. To warm the room without changing the furniture, a brass frame paired with clear glass plays the same role.

Paint for a glass table, what alternative?

Painting on glass requires long preparation and drying, and the result fixes the colour. To change the lighting mood without touching the furniture, work on the source instead: a warmer bulb, or smoked glass at the ceiling.

Glass ball wall light, what use?

A glass ball wall light complements a ceiling light, along a wall or on either side of a mirror. The clear globe diffuses crisp light, smoked glass a softer light. It is mounted on a mounting box, with a protection rating suited to the room.

Glass ball wall light, what differences from a ceiling light?

The wall light is fixed to the wall and lights downwards or upwards, the ceiling light is placed in the centre and lights the whole room. Both can share the same clear glass, which keeps a consistent line between wall and ceiling.

Ribbed glass wall light, what effect in a room?

Ribbed, or fluted, glass breaks the light into fine lines and makes the glass less readable without tinting it. It is the same principle as on Sorvesisto, Pavorna or the Striata bowl, where the ribs animate the surface while keeping the clarity.
