Choose according to the room and its surface area: a large living room takes a generous model with several light points, a bedroom a soft and if possible dimmable light, a kitchen a bright light that is easy to clean. In this selection, the dominant materials are metal, steel, aluminium, acrylic and glass, some models are dimmer compatible, and IP20 largely dominates the selection, with a few models at IP44 or IP54.
Which ceiling light should you choose for the living room, kitchen or bedroom?
The choice is first made by room and surface area: a large living room takes a generous model with several light points, a kitchen calls for a bright light that is easy to clean, a bedroom a soft light, if possible dimmable. Then check the socket type and the clearance under the fixture.
Living room ceiling light
In a living room, aim for a broad and comfortable light. Crystal squares and gold or silver baskets add a decorative presence, and a model with adjustable intensity adapts to dinner as well as to the evening.
Kitchen ceiling light
The light should be bright and maintenance simple: flat shapes, glass or metal, white and black tones that forgive marks. An integrated LED module avoids changing a bulb above the worktop.
Bedroom ceiling light
Look for a soft, non-glaring light: round or oval, glass or crystal, in warm white around 2700 to 3500 K. Adjustable intensity suits reading and then falling asleep better than a fixed bright light.
| Room | What you expect from the light | Shapes and suitable materials | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Broad and comfortable lighting | Crystal square, round in glass or metal | Dimmer, socket, power |
| Bedroom | Soft, non-glaring light | Round or oval, glass, crystal | Colour temperature |
| Dining room | Table and room lit | Several light points, gold, silver | Diameter relative to the table |
| Kitchen | Bright light, easy maintenance | Simple shapes, glass or metal | Washable surface, socket or LED |
| Hallway | Lit passage without bulk | Flat shapes, square or tube | IP20 sufficient outside wet areas |
| Workshop | Even lighting of surfaces | Crystal or metal | Power, diffusion, fixing |
Which ceiling light gives the best light?
The one whose power and socket match the surface area: an integrated LED model gives an even light with no bulb to replace, an E27 socket model lets you choose the bulb and its intensity. A neutral white light suits work rooms, a warm white one suits rest.
Power and surface area
As a general rule, allow around 3 to 5 watts of LED per square metre for accent lighting, more for a work room. The stated power should always be read together with the actual lumen output: a high power with a derisory output signals an approximate spec sheet, so rely on the described effect instead.
Light temperature
Warm white (2700 to 3500 K) relaxes, neutral white (3500 to 4500 K) stays readable in an office or kitchen, cool white (4500 to 6500 K) lights work rooms. Evenness matters as much as power: a large flat diffuser lights more uniformly than a small concentrated module.
What is the difference between a ceiling light and a chandelier?
The ceiling light is fixed close to the ceiling, flush or with little overhang: it lights the room broadly and lets people move underneath. The chandelier hangs down into the space, often with several branches or pendants, and becomes a central decorative element. A pendant, for its part, is placed above a specific surface.
Ceiling light or chandelier
The ceiling light suits rooms where people walk: hallway, kitchen, bedroom, landing. The chandelier takes up height and is reserved for spaces that can carry it, a living room with a high ceiling or a dining room, where it becomes the focal point of the decor.
And the pendant?
The pendant hangs above a specific surface, table or worktop, and concentrates the light where people eat or work. It is adjusted in height, generally between 75 and 85 cm above a tabletop. The dining room lights illustrate this use well.
How to choose an LED ceiling light, powerful or adjustable?
An integrated LED ceiling light avoids replacing bulbs and diffuses an even light. Choose the power according to the surface area and use: the selection ranges from the understated model to the very bright one. Some models accept a dimmer, information given on their spec sheet, practical for the living room as well as the bedroom.
Integrated LED, socket or module
The models in the selection use either an integrated LED module or a GU10, E27, E14 or GX53 socket in small format. The integrated module diffuses without hot spots and cannot be replaced; the socket leaves the power and colour of the bulb free.
Powerful, modern, adjustable
For a large room, a powerful model with broad diffusion lights without multiplying light points. Modern lines go to round, oval or tube shapes, in metal or glass. The dimmer compatible models adjust the intensity according to the time of day.
| Crystal | Elaborate, sparkling effect, the room is showcased |
| Metal and iron | Clean lines, contemporary or industrial look |
| Glass | Light passes through, discreet silhouette |
| E27 socket | Free choice of bulb and its intensity |
| E14 or GU10 socket | Small modules, precise adjustment of the light |
| Integrated LED module | Even light, no bulb to replace |
Original, art nouveau or minimalist ceiling light: which style to adopt?
Style is read in the shape and finish: square ceiling lights and crystal baskets give an elaborate look, close to the art nouveau spirit, while round, oval or tube lines, in metal or glass, stay understated and minimalist. Match the colour of the fixture to that of the room.
Original and art nouveau
Square crystal shapes and baskets with pendants create this elaborate look, especially in a gold finish. The light passes through the crystal and casts reflections on the wall. A gold finished model warms an interior with light woodwork.
Minimalist
A silhouette without frills: round, oval or tube, in glass, metal or acrylic, white, black or grey. The light is direct and even, the fixture fades behind the furniture. Minimalist styles work as well in an office as in a hallway.
Matching colours and the room's design
Silver matches steel, grey and light worktops, black creates a sharp contrast on a white ceiling. A square shape structures a large living room, a round one works anywhere. Black ceiling lights suit kitchens and hallways.
Can a ceiling light be installed in a bathroom or hallway?
The models in this selection are rated IP20: protected against contacts and dust, but not against water splashes. They are therefore suitable for bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and landings, and in a bathroom only outside areas exposed to water.
IP20, what it means
Two digits: the first concerns solid bodies and contacts, the second water. The final zero means no protection against water. The vast majority of the models in the collection are IP20, so they go in dry rooms, never above a bathtub or a shower.
In the bathroom, outside water zones
In a bathroom, an IP20 goes far from the bathtub and the shower tray; in those zones, a fixture with a higher protection rating is required. In a hallway, IP20 is enough: favour a flat shape that does not obstruct the passage. See the hallway solutions and the bathroom ceiling lights.
How to install and maintain a ceiling light?
Switch off the circuit at the breaker, screw the bracket to the ceiling box, connect the earth then the live and neutral, close the cover and fit the bulb matching the socket: E27, E14, GU10 or integrated LED module depending on the model. Dust regularly and clean the crystal with a soft, dry cloth.
Fixing the ceiling light to the ceiling
Identify the live, neutral and earth before connecting, earth first, then live and neutral in the connection block. Tighten without forcing on a solid bracket, restore the power and test. The LED module, for its part, is not wired to a socket.
Maintaining crystal, metal and glass
A soft, dry cloth is enough for crystal, without aggressive products that would dull the pendants. Glass accepts a window cleaner, metal is content with a microfibre to avoid scratching the finish. Always switch off the power before handling a fixture.
Ceiling fan light, wall light or pendant: which ceiling fixture?
A ceiling light lights downwards from the ceiling, a wall light is fixed to the wall for accent lighting, a pendant hangs above a table or a worktop. This selection does not include a ceiling fan light: to ventilate a room, a dedicated model is needed.
Ceiling fan light
A simple ceiling light does not move the air. If ventilation is the main need, look for a device designed for that, with a motor and blades. Here, the contemporary ceiling lights play the light card, not the air one.
Wall light or pendant above a table
A wall light lights a wall and serves as accent, a ceiling light covers the room broadly, a pendant is adjusted above the table surface. For a fixture above a tabletop, look at pendants, and for the rest of the house, browse all Designix lighting.
Why choose Designix for your ceiling light?
You order with secure payment, with tracked delivery and the possibility of returning your ceiling light. Designix customer service answers questions about choice and installation, and every model in the selection is guaranteed for 2 years. For a tight budget, round or tube shapes in metal are generally the most accessible.
Payment, tracked delivery and returns
Payment is secure, delivery is tracked and returns are possible. Once the room and surface area are defined, two models are often enough: the round Cala ceiling light, with dimmer, for a living room with adjustable intensity, or a square ceiling light in gold crystal, more decorative.
2 year warranty and customer service
Most models are guaranteed for 2 years, up to 5 years depending on the reference, with Designix customer service support. For a very bright workshop, kitchen or hallway ceiling light, look at the office ceiling lights. Tight budget: the small budget selection gathers the simple shapes.
Wooden ceiling light: how to get that look on the ceiling?
A wooden ceiling light brings a warm material to the ceiling: slats, discs or rings in light or dark wood, often combined with a soft light. These models are gathered in our selection of wooden ceiling lights, from living room to bedroom. For a similar look in another material, beige and bronze tones play the same role. The Zenina ceiling light with two adjustable gold spots comes closest: round shade 15 cm in diameter, E27 socket, IP20 protection rating, for a living room, bedroom or dining room. Its two heads swivel to direct the light towards a wall or a reading corner.
Warm tones call for a warm white light, around 2700 to 3500 K, which brings out the material without dulling it. The E27 socket lets you choose the bulb and its intensity, which matters if you want to lower the light in the evening. Before installation, check the clearance under the shade and the size of the canopy, especially if the fixture goes above a tall piece of furniture.
To extend the effect, a beige or bronze frame on metal works well, like the Marica ceiling light with nested squares, available in beige, white and black. Gold finishes warm the look even more in a room with light woodwork. See the gold ceiling lights and the living room ceiling lights.
Frequently asked questions
Which ceiling light gives the best light?
The one whose power and socket match the surface area. An integrated LED ceiling light diffuses an even light with no bulb to replace; an E27 socket model lets you choose the bulb and its intensity. Colour temperature matters as much as power.
What is the difference between a ceiling light and a chandelier?
The ceiling light stays close to the ceiling, flush or with little overhang, and lights broadly without obstructing movement. The chandelier hangs down into the space, with several branches or pendants, and becomes the central decorative element. Both are fixed to the ceiling, only the bulk changes.
Powerful LED ceiling light: how to choose it?
Look at the stated power, the evenness of diffusion and the surface area to cover. An integrated LED module gives an even and long-lasting light; an E27 socket model accepts a stronger or weaker bulb. The product sheet gives the power and socket of each model.
Bathroom ceiling light: what should you check?
The protection rating. The models in this selection are rated IP20: they are suitable for dry rooms, bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, and in a bathroom only outside areas exposed to water splashes. In those zones, a fixture with a higher protection rating is required.
Can a dimmer be installed on a ceiling light?
Only if the model is designed for it: dimmer compatibility is indicated on its product sheet. An integrated LED ceiling light that is not compatible will not dim correctly, even with a dimmer switch. If in doubt, check the sheet before installation.
