First choose the length according to the area to be covered, then the protection rating according to the humidity and dust in the room: these two decisions settle everything else. An outdoor batten light is a closed linear luminaire, whose housing and diffuser keep water and dust away from the electronics.

What is an outdoor batten light and when should you choose one?
An outdoor batten light is a linear luminaire whose housing and diffuser prevent water and dust from reaching the electronics. It is chosen wherever a standard LED batten would deteriorate: garage, laundry room, cellar, workshop, pantry, basement or covered terrace.
What is an outdoor LED batten light used for?
It gives continuous light over its entire length, with no hot spot or dark area between two sources. On a garage ceiling, it lights the floor and the workbench in one stroke. Mounted on the wall above a worktop, it creates grazing light that does not cast the shadow of your hand. In a pantry, it blends into the ceiling, which makes it discreet. To compare with other sources mounted high up, see our LED ceiling light.
What is the difference from an open luminaire?
An open luminaire lets dust and moisture settle directly on the components, and is hard to clean without dismantling it. The closed housing and diffuser of an outdoor batten light need only a cloth, with no tools. That is what makes it useful in a room where the air is laden, damp or greasy. If the room is only affected by humidity, an a light for damp rooms fulfils the same role in another format.
What length of outdoor batten light should you choose: 60 cm, 120 cm or 150 cm?
Length is chosen according to the area to be lit and the spacing of the fixings. A 60 cm batten is suitable for a cupboard, pantry or small laundry room, 120 cm for a garage or workshop, 150 cm for a long run or a long room.
| Length | Rooms and uses | What it changes | To check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 cm | cupboard, pantry, small laundry room, under-shelf | lights a short area, mounted in aligned pairs | fixing spacing and available width |
| 120 cm | garage, workshop, storeroom, technical room | continuous lighting over a worktop or garage floor | mounting height and length of the run |
| 150 cm | large workshop, long room, basement, covered terrace | covers an extended run with fewer light points | support, power supply and alignment of the luminaires |
60 cm outdoor batten light: for which rooms?
This format fits in a cupboard, under a storeroom shelf or above a laundry worktop. It is often mounted in pairs, aligned, to follow the length of a room without multiplying dark areas. Above all, check the space between the walls and the fixing spacing. Compare the discover the short and long formats before deciding.
120 cm outdoor LED batten light: the versatile format
This is the format that covers a workstation, a garage floor or a storeroom without having to align several. Placed along the axis of the vehicle or above the workbench, it lights in one piece what you look at and what you walk on.
150 cm outdoor LED batten light: when should you go longer?
The large format serves long rooms: extended workshop, basement, covered terrace run. It reduces the number of light points to connect. Pay attention to the support, which must accept the weight over its entire length, and to the power supply available nearby.
Where to install an outdoor batten light: garage, laundry room, cellar or workshop?
In a garage, it lights the floor and workbench without fearing splashes; in a laundry room or pantry, it resists vapours and is cleaned with a wipe of a cloth; in a cellar, basement or workshop, it withstands dust and damp air.
Outdoor batten light for garage and workshop: ceiling or wall?
On the ceiling, it gives general light and prevents glare because it is high and directed downwards. On the wall, above the workbench, it lights the worktop with grazing light, which brings out details and surface defects. The two combine well in a workshop. Our lights for garage and workshop show both principles.
Can you light a covered terrace or an awning?
Yes, with a model whose water protection rating is high, and mounted outside the area where water stagnates. Rain driven by the wind reaches what a simple awning shelters poorly. A light for covered terrace is then fixed set back, under the best-protected part. In a technical room, prefer ceiling mounting, away from traffic areas, with a light for technical room rigid enough to withstand impacts.
| Environment | What threatens the luminaire | IP rating to look at | Points to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laundry room, pantry | vapour, splashes, fine dust | high rating on both digits | closed housing and cleanable diffuser |
| Garage, workshop | dust, impacts, splinters | solid protection and rigid housing | fixing method and rigidity of the housing |
| Cellar and basement | ambient humidity, cold air | rating suited to a damp room | ventilation of the room and protected wiring |
| Covered terrace, awning | driving lateral rain | high water rating | fixing outside the water accumulation area |
What light does an outdoor LED batten light give and how to choose it according to the room?
The outdoor LED batten light gives linear, even light, with no hot spot. For a garage or workshop, a neutral or cool light is preferred, which helps read details; for a laundry room, an entrance or a cellar, a warmer light softens the atmosphere. The frosted diffuser prevents reflections on shiny surfaces.
Colour temperature: which light for which room?
A warm light is around 3000 K, a neutral light around 4000 K, a cool light beyond that. In general, the more precision the room requires, the more you move towards neutral or cool. In a workshop where you sort parts or read a plan, that is the right benchmark. In a cellar or an entrance, stay on warm so as not to give the impression of a technical room. The choice is therefore made according to use, not according to chance. Our Designix indoor lighting follows this logic.
Opal or transparent diffuser: what effect?
An opal diffuser spreads the light and hides the source: the eye receives no direct glare, which suits above a worktop. A more transparent diffuser lets through a brighter and more directional light, useful when you want to light far away. For a low ceiling or a cramped room, opal prevents the glare effect. A discreet ceiling light favours this diffuse effect.
How to read the protection rating (IP) of an outdoor batten light?
This collection contains no products at the moment. No IP rating, housing or diffuser material, cap, light temperature, dimension, style or room can be indicated. This information will be added as soon as an outdoor batten light is available.
What do the two digits of an IP rating mean?
The first digit increases with the fineness of the dust blocked, the second with resistance to water, from splashes to jets. A dry room is satisfied with a moderate rating; a laundry room or an awning require both digits high, because vapour and rain attack at the same time as dust.
What protection in a bathroom or under an awning?
In a bathroom, a high water rating is required and ceiling mounting, outside direct splashes. The area around the bath and the shower tray remains the most exposed, therefore the most demanding. Under an awning, the same reasoning applies to lateral rain. A light for laundry room or pantry is often suitable for both cases, provided you check the rating on the product sheet before ordering.
Single, double or motion-sensor outdoor batten light: which to choose?
A single batten lights downwards, with direct light. A double batten lights from two sides or covers a larger area, useful in a large garage or a workshop. The motion-sensor version switches on only on passage, handy in a technical corridor, a storeroom or a room that is rarely used.
Double outdoor batten light: in which cases?
It is justified when a single row of light would leave dark areas on the floor, in a wide or cluttered room. On the other hand, it takes up more space on the ceiling and requires a support that holds the load.
Motion sensor: for which rooms?
In a storeroom, a technical corridor or a cellar staircase, switching on on passage avoids leaving the light on for nothing. Check the field and sensitivity of the sensor according to the width of the room and the mounting height. For this need, browse the browse the motion-sensor models.
Integrated LED or replaceable tube?
With an integrated LED, the source cannot be removed and maintenance is limited to cleaning the diffuser. With a replaceable tube, you change the source without changing the luminaire. A room that is hard to access points towards integrated LED, a workshop towards the replaceable tube.
How to install and maintain an outdoor batten light?
It is fixed to the ceiling or wall, on a flat surface, with screws and plugs suited to the support. Align the battens on the same axis to avoid shadow areas and follow the wiring direction indicated in the instructions. A soft cloth is enough to clean the diffuser.
Ceiling or wall mounting: how to choose?
The ceiling lights the whole room and moves the source away from the eye, which limits glare. The wall, above a worktop, concentrates the light where the hands work. In both cases, the fixing spacing must match that of the luminaire.
How to align several battens in a room?
Draw a line with a chalk line before drilling, then install the luminaires at regular intervals so that the light appears continuous. Switch off the power at the circuit breaker before any work and entrust the connection to an electrician if the circuit does not exist. For a basement, compare with our cellar and basement lighting.
Maintenance: what can be cleaned safely?
The diffuser is cleaned with lukewarm soapy water and a soft cloth, never with solvent, which dulls the plastic. Wipe rather than rinse with plenty of water, even on a well-protected model. Check once a year the condition of the fixings and the absence of moisture in the housing.
Outdoor batten light price: what makes the price vary and how to choose right?
The price depends mainly on the length, the housing, the diffuser, the protection rating and the built-in electronics such as the motion sensor. An entry-level model is enough for a pantry; a damp or very dusty room requires a more robust housing. The up-to-date price is shown on each product sheet.
Why do two outdoor batten lights not have the same price?
A rigid aluminium housing costs more than a light profile, and a quality diffuser resists yellowing better. Add the protection rating, which requires seals and careful assembly, then the sensor, which brings extra electronics. The difference is paid once and shows in use.
Should you choose the cheapest model?
For a dry cupboard or pantry, an affordable model does the job. For a laundry room, a damp basement or a dusty workshop, the housing and seals determine durability, and therefore long-term savings. Compare all Designix luminaires according to the room before deciding.

Frequently asked questions about the outdoor batten light
Is a 60 cm outdoor batten light enough for a laundry room?
Yes if the room is small: 60 cm lights a worktop, a pantry or a cupboard. For a longer laundry room, align two short battens rather than installing a single luminaire, which gives more even light and fewer dark areas.
Can an outdoor batten light be installed in a bathroom?
Yes, provided you choose a high protection rating and follow the installation rules for damp environments. Ceiling mounting is preferred, outside direct splashes, and the electrical connection is entrusted to a professional if the circuit does not exist.
What is a double outdoor batten light?
It is a batten that diffuses light from two sides, or covers a larger area than a single model. It is chosen for a large garage, a workshop or a storage room, when a single row of light would leave dark areas on the floor.
Outdoor LED batten light or replaceable tube: which to choose?
The integrated LED model cannot be dismantled and requires less maintenance. The replaceable tube model allows you to change the source without changing the luminaire. The choice depends on use: a hard-to-access room favours integrated LED, a workshop sometimes prefers the replaceable tube.
How to fix an outdoor batten light to the ceiling or wall?
It is fixed to a flat surface with screws and plugs suited to the support, respecting the indicated spacing. On the wall, it serves as grazing light above a worktop; on the ceiling, it lights the whole room. The power is switched off before any work.
