Count on an IP44 pendant light wherever water splashes without spraying: above a washbasin, a worktop, in a hallway or under a sheltered porch. Its protection covers splashes and steam, not direct jets. Ball and round shapes, glass and metal, G9 and E27 sockets, black or white finishes.
What does the IP44 rating mean?
IP44 means the light fixture resists solid objects over 1 mm and water splashes, such as splashes from a washbasin. This is the protection that makes a pendant light suitable for a damp room, provided it stays out of direct jets.
IP44 pendant lights
Steam from a shower and droplets thrown up by a sink do not reach the bulb: the glass closes the bottom, the housing protects the wiring. So you install the same fixture as elsewhere, without dreading morning humidity. The modern LED pendant lights in the selection diffuse light instead of dazzling.
IP44 pendant light for bathrooms
Above the washbasin, the mirror or a cabinet, the pendant hangs into the splash zone without ever catching the jet of a shower head. This distance from the water outlet is what makes the difference, even more than the rating alone.
IP44 outdoor pendant light
Outside, an IP44 pendant light only holds up under cover: porch, canopy, roof overhang. The rating covers splashes, not driving rain or immersion. Part of the range stays IP20 and is reserved for dry rooms; browse our lighting catalogue to spot the two levels.
IP44 bathroom pendant light: where to place it and at what height?
Above a washbasin or a mirror, the IP44 pendant light hangs at eye level, without getting in the way. The cables in the selection offer several maximum heights, from 100 to 160 cm depending on the model, which leaves room to shorten in a low room.
At what height should a pendant light be placed above a washbasin?
Generally allow 180 to 200 cm from the floor to the bottom of the diffuser, roughly at eye level in front of the mirror: the light falls on the face without casting shadows. Under a sloped ceiling, lower it a little and check that no one bumps into it while washing their hands.
How do you shorten a pendant light?
Cut at the breaker, open the mounting cover, loosen the cable clamp, pull the cable to the desired length then reattach the wires. An opal glass gives a soft, glare-free light, metal wipes clean in one stroke. The black opal glass ball IP44 model adjusts up to 123 cm, handy above a cabinet.
A bathroom model is chosen on three points: the clearance under the diffuser, the shape that follows the cabinet and the colour that answers the tapware. For a very bright look, see the white opal glass, which lights widely without heating up.
In the kitchen, a glass for the kitchen cleans up as fast as a worktop.
Which IP44 pendant light should you choose for each room?
In a bathroom, favour an opal glass ball for soft light; in the kitchen, a round model or a tube above the worktop; in the hallway, a short pendant or a multi-point set to fill the height.
| Room | Recommended shape | Size noted in the selection | Common socket | Key point |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bathroom | Opal glass ball | Diameter 15 to 20 cm, adjustable cable | G9 | IP44 recommended, away from direct jets |
| Kitchen | Round or tube above the worktop | Long formats, up to 158.5 cm | G9 | Lights the worktop without dazzling |
| Living room | Ball or ring | Maximum height up to 160 cm | E27 | Adjustable height above the table |
| Dining room | Ball or linear composition | Large width, up to 120 cm | G9 or E27 | Downward light on the table |
| Hallway and corridor | Compact 15 cm ball | Maximum height 100 to 130 cm | G9 | Keeps clearance to walk through |
| Bedroom | Ball or tube | Diameter 15 to 20 cm | G9 | The dimmer lets you lower the intensity |
IP44 pendant light for the kitchen
Above a worktop, a tube or a round shape hangs low to light a worktop without dazzling: the large formats in the selection go up to 158.5 cm. Two light points above an island spread the light better than a single central source.
IP44 pendant light in the hallway and corridor
A compact 15 cm ball fills the space without blocking movement: set the bottom of the diffuser above 210 cm from the floor. The Nordic lines and the Japanese or minimalist styles in the selection suit this role well, with slim metal and discreet glass.
Black, white or gold IP44 pendant light: which colour should you choose?
Matte black structures a bright room and pairs with metal, white blends into a ceiling and visually enlarges it, gold brings a warm touch. Ball and round shapes dominate the selection, with a few tubes and rings for a more graphic design.
Black IP44 pendant light
On white tiles or a light wall, a black metal pendant light creates a crisp focal point. The most understated match remains glass and black metal, and the black and white duo works in a two-tone bathroom. For softer contrast, matte white also exists in white metal pendant lights.
Design IP44 pendant light
Ring, tube and ball shapes draw the light as much as they emit it. A few pieces play with dots or an original design, with worked glass that stands out without overloading. For a warm touch rather than outright brass, look at the gold-coloured metal pendant lights.
G9, E27 or E14 socket: which should you choose for an IP44 pendant light?
The G9 socket equips most models and takes compact LED bulbs; the E27, wider, is found on ball pendant lights of generous diameter. The selection is overwhelmingly LED, and most models accept a dimmer. A small E14 socket appears on rare pieces, for a narrow diffuser.
G9 or E27: which should you choose?
The G9 fits into a compact diffuser and on multi-shade sets, where the bulb must stay discreet. The E27 dresses large glass balls and leaves the choice among standard bulbs. The wattages read range from 12 W to 15 W, with configurations capped at 1 x 6 W or 2 x 6 W.
Is a dimmable IP44 pendant light possible?
Yes on a large part of the models, provided you fit a dimmable LED bulb: a classic bulb buzzes or does not dim down. The dimmable pendant lights are spotted at the selection stage, and the Designix lighting range groups the compatible models.
| Configuration | Bulb to plan for | Models concerned | To check |
|---|---|---|---|
| G9 socket | Compact LED | Glass balls, tubes and rounds | Dimmable bulb if the fixture is dimmable |
| E27 socket | Standard LED | Large glass balls, boho pendant light | Bulb bulk in a small diffuser |
| Two light points | Two G9 bulbs | Cylindrical shades | Plan for two bulbs of the same wattage |
Wood or rattan IP44 pendant light: which materials hold up in a damp room?
Glass and metal make up most of the selection: glass, opal or clear, diffuses and protects the bulb, metal holds the structure. Steel refines long tubes, brass brings a golden touch and ceramic a matte detail. A boho pendant light plays the braided rope card.
Wood IP44 pendant light
No wood model is offered in this selection for a damp room. The closest visual reference remains tinted glass combined with matte black, which gives a warm reading without wood. For genuine wood, you need to turn to dry rooms and the wood pendant lights in the range.
Rattan IP44 pendant light
Rattan is not on the menu either, but the boho style exists: the boho braided rope model brings the warm material and relief you look for in rattan. Its E27 socket takes a standard bulb. The glass and matte black remains the most understated match for a bathroom.
How do you install an IP44 pendant light on the ceiling?
Installation is done with the power off: fix the mounting plate to the ceiling, connect the wires, then adjust the cable height before screwing on the diffuser. A model that is too heavy requires a support suited to the ceiling material, and a damp room requires cutting the power at the breaker.
How do you fix a pendant light to the ceiling without drilling holes?
An adhesive hook only holds very light models. Glass and its metal weigh too much: the fixing is screwed into a plug chosen for concrete, plaster or a beam. Reserve gluing for compact LED models, and check the cable gland is tight after installation.
Can you install a ceiling light without a DCL box?
Without a DCL box, the connection is made in a junction box, then the fixture is fixed by its mounting plate. The DCL simplifies wiring and replacement; its absence does not prevent installation, but the work must stay clean, with the power off, and be entrusted to an electrician in a damp room.
How do you maintain an IP44 pendant light and keep the light clean?
Glass is cleaned with a soft, slightly damp cloth, without abrasives; painted or brass metal is happy with a dry wipe. Check the cable tension and the bulb from time to time, and keep the dimmer compatible with a dimmable LED bulb.
Cleaning glass and metal
Switch off the power, let it cool, then run a soft, slightly damp cloth over the glass. On painted or brass metal, a dry wipe is enough: no abrasives, no harsh products. White pendant lights for bedrooms dust down in a minute.
Checking the bulb and the dimmer
Check the cable tension and the condition of the diffuser from time to time. If the light dims or flickers, replace the bulb with a dimmable LED of the same socket. LED pendant lights with a worked design accept this replacement without a full disassembly.
Two models sum up the spirit of the selection: the Suguri C pendant, in white or black glass and metal, and the Luoti, ball and tube, more compact with its 100 cm maximum height.
Secure payment, tracked delivery, returns and Designix customer service: the two-year warranty covers every pendant light in the selection.
Frequently asked questions
Is an outdoor IP44 pendant light possible?
Yes, but only under cover, protected from driving rain and direct jets. The IP44 rating covers splashes, not downpours or immersion. For a truly exposed terrace, it is better to aim for a higher protection rating.
How do you shorten a pendant light?
The cable is shortened at the mounting box: open the cover, loosen the cable clamp, cut to the desired length then reattach the wires. The models in the selection state a maximum height, which leaves room to adjust without tension on the connections.
What is a ceiling-hung light fixture called?
A light fixture hung from the ceiling is called a pendant light, or a pendant. The word ceiling light, on the other hand, refers to a fixture mounted flat against the ceiling, without a cable. A pendant light is recognised by its cable or rod that lowers the diffuser, ball, round or tube.
How do you hang a pendant light from the ceiling without an electrical supply?
Without a ceiling supply, you use a pendant light powered by a plug, with visible cable and switch, or you run a supply from an existing socket in trunking. In a damp room, this installation is entrusted to an electrician, with the power off.
Which pendant light should you choose?
You first choose the room and the clearance, then the shape: ball for diffuse lighting, tube or ring for a finer line. Then come the socket, G9 or E27, the colour, black or white, and the protection, IP44 in a damp room. The dimmer remains a useful comfort in the bedroom.
