A glass hanging light is chosen first for the light it gives: clear glass to see the bulb and its filament, smoked glass to soften, amber or opal glass to warm and diffuse widely. Then count the free height under the fixture, the socket and the IP rating, because the whole selection is IP20, reserved for dry rooms.
What light does a glass hanging light give?
A glass hanging light softens the light according to its finish: clear glass shows the bulb and the filament, smoked glass reduces glare, amber or opal glass warms and diffuses more widely. The final result also depends on the socket and the chosen bulb temperature.
Clear glass or smoked glass hanging light: what difference on the ceiling?
Clear glass gives a sharp light and marked shadows, with a clearly visible bulb: practical above a table or a worktop. Smoked glass absorbs part of the flux and turns the source into a soft halo, without a dazzling point when you look up. It is the common choice of a living room hanging light hung low.
Glass and metal: what the frame changes in the result
All references combine glass with a metal frame, sometimes completed with iron, steel, brass or copper. A black frame goes unnoticed and lets the glass occupy the space. A brass or gold finish reflects light upwards and warms the room, as on golden hanging lights.
Amber glass, opal glass or coloured glass hanging light: which finish to choose?
Amber glass and glass and brass give a warm light, close to a golden halo. Opal glass diffuses a uniform white, without a visible filament. Coloured glass, orange or green, acts as a decorative accent: it colours the light and becomes the highlight of the room.
Blown glass and coloured blown glass hanging light: what it changes
Blown glass keeps the irregularities of the hand: bubbles, variable thicknesses, reflections that move according to the angle. In coloured version, it strongly tints the light. A coloured blown glass is noticed as much off as on, which destines it to a room where it can be the only strong light, to see in the design hanging lights.
Orange glass, green glass or smoked glass hanging light: which colour for which room?
An orange or amber glass warms a bedroom or an entrance and matches wood and brass. Green and blue work better on white, concrete or black metal. Smoked remains the most neutral: it fits everywhere and ages without tiring, in a contemporary hanging light as in a more classic interior.
In which room to install a glass hanging light?
The living room and the dining room are the most represented rooms in this selection, ahead of the kitchen and the bedroom; the entrance and the corridor welcome rather globes and lanterns. A glass hanging light is suitable everywhere you want a low light, visible from the room.
| Room | Format that works | Recommended finish | Light temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Ball, globe or cluster of glasses | Smoked or opal | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K |
| Dining room | Linear bar, tube, series of globes | Clear or amber | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K |
| Kitchen | Tube, short bar, small globes | Smoked or clear | Cool white 4500 to 6500 K or warm white |
| Bedroom | Small diameter ball, tube | Opal or coloured | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K |
| Entrance or corridor | Globe Ø 60 cm, lantern, glass cage | Clear or bronze | Warm white 2700 to 3500 K |
Modern living room hanging light: which shape above the sofa?
Above a living area, a ball of 30 to 50 cm or a globe works well, alone or in a cluster of several glasses. Round shapes exist from small to large diameter in the ball hanging lights. Above all check the drop, to be able to adjust the height after installation.
Bedroom hanging light and entrance hanging light: which light in the evening?
In a bedroom, an opal or coloured glass diffuses without dazzling from the bed, and a tube or a small ball suits reduced volumes. In an entrance, a large globe or a lantern marks the arrival. Compare the adult bedroom hanging lights before deciding.
Kitchen hanging light: which hanging light above a worktop or an island?
Above an island or a worktop, a glass hanging light is chosen low and aligned: linear bar, tube or series of globes on cables. Smoked or clear glass avoids eating the light on the worktop, and a model with adjustable height allows adjustment after installation.
Italian design kitchen hanging light or original kitchen hanging light: what differences?
The Italian style plays on fine lines, smoked or coloured glasses and brass frames, aligned in a bar above the island. A more original piece relies on the shape: glass cage, bell or diverted glass jars. The kitchen hanging lights bring these two approaches together.
Modern tube kitchen hanging light or light bar: how many light points?
A tube or a short bar suits a narrow worktop; a bar of 100 to 110 cm or a series of globes on cables covers an island. The number of glasses follows the length of the worktop, never the opposite. The modern kitchen hanging lights often have several light points adjustable one by one.
XXL hanging light for high ceilings: which format for a large volume?
For a high ceiling, first look for a large adjustable height, up to 150 or 180 cm depending on the model, then a wide format: globe Ø 60 cm, bar of 110 cm or several glasses distributed. A large format seen from afar reads better than a small fixture lost in height.
Original hanging light fixture: when to leave classic shapes?
When the volume is high and wide, a banal shape disappears. A lantern, a glass cage or a cut glass keep a silhouette readable from afar. The bronze lantern with glass cage Pimpernel measures 31 cm in diameter for 120 cm in height, which makes it credible above a table or in a high entrance.
XXL hanging light: which diameter for an entrance or a staircase?
A globe of 60 cm in diameter or a bar of 110 cm reads from the bottom of a staircase; below 30 cm, the fixture is lost in the height. The black glass globe hanging light Bollique Constellation illustrates this format: 60 cm in diameter, integrated diodes, possible intensity adjustment. Also see the worked shapes of the design hanging light fixtures.
Can a glass hanging light be installed in a bathroom (IP44)?
No: all the glass hanging lights in this selection are classified IP20, therefore intended for dry interior use. In a bathroom, you must aim for a minimum IP44 protection rating around the bathtub or the washbasin. Outside water zones, an IP20 hanging light can remain in place.
Why does the protection rating matter in a damp room?
The IP rating describes resistance to dust and water. In IP20, the fixture is protected against medium solid bodies, but not against splashes: no problem in a living room, a bedroom or a corridor. Near a washbasin or a bathtub, water arrives in splashes and vapour, hence a need for a minimum IP44 depending on the zone.
Where to place a glass hanging light in an entrance or a corridor?
These rooms are dry: an IP20 hanging light is suitable there, provided you keep a safety distance with a door and adjust the drop so as not to hinder passage. A globe or a lantern marks the arrival without occupying the floor. Browse the corridor hanging lights for these narrow volumes.
E27, E14, G9 or LED socket: how to choose your glass hanging light?
The E27 socket accepts classic and connected bulbs of large format, the E14 small globes, the G9 compact pin bulbs, and the integrated LED cannot be replaced. The choice therefore depends on the desire to change the bulb later and the diameter of the glass globes.
| Socket | Accepted bulb | What it changes | Replacement |
|---|---|---|---|
| E27 | Standard large format bulbs | Large glass globes, strong presence | Replaceable bulb |
| E14 | Small globes and thin bulbs | Smaller glasses, light lines | Replaceable bulb |
| G9 | Compact pin bulbs | Tight assemblies, several glasses | Replaceable bulb |
| Integrated LED | Non-removable module | Constant flux, no bulb adjustment | Not replaceable |
E27 or E14 bulb: which power for a glass hanging light?
The models in the collection accept up to 40 W depending on the references, with LED modules of 6 to 10 W on the integrated versions. In E27, a filament bulb gives a warm light very close to the expected result; in E14, small globes require thin bulbs. See the LED hanging lights.
Hanging light with integrated LED: what advantages over a classic socket?
The LED module cannot be replaced, but it cannot be adjusted either: constant flux, no bulb to choose. It is the choice of large pieces with several glasses, where changing twelve bulbs would be tedious. Some of the modern models in the selection work this way.
How to match a glass hanging light with a glass or wooden table?
Above a glass table, a smoked or amber glass creates a visible contrast and avoids the all-transparent effect; above a light wood, a clear or opal glass matches better. Brass and black iron warm or structure the whole depending on the furniture.
How to revamp a glass table with wood?
A wooden table runner or matte placemats are enough to warm a transparent top, without dismantling anything. The light does the rest: a smoked or amber glass gives relief to the glass of the table, a clear glass erases it. It is the type of match found in a dining room hanging light.
Glass and wood hanging light: which material match?
On a light wood, clear or opal glass keeps the room bright; on a dark wood, amber and brass warm the whole. A beige ball of 20 to 70 cm in diameter, like the Lunéa, is height adjustable and follows changes of table or room.
How to install and maintain a glass hanging light?
A glass hanging light is installed on a ceiling fixing point, then adjusted: the models in the collection drop from 30 to 190 cm depending on the references. Glass is cleaned with soapy water and a soft cloth, never with an abrasive product. The warranty is 2 years.
At what height to hang a hanging light above the dining table?
In general, aim for about 75 to 85 cm between the bottom of the fixture and the tabletop, a little less above a worktop, and adjust according to the height of the guests and the size of the fixture. As the drop is adjustable, it is better to hang high during assembly then lower cable by cable, checking the passage at the table.
Hanging light with dimmer: how to adjust the intensity?
Some references are dimmer compatible, compatible with a suitable wall switch or a connected bulb. Not everything varies: on a non-dimmable integrated LED, the intensity remains fixed. Check compatibility before buying your bulb in the hanging light fixtures.
To compare shapes, diameters and cables before validating, open our selection of glass hanging light fixtures, then refine on the complete hanging light category. A bar of 110 cm with five amber glasses suits an island as well as a large table, and the same family is available in the light fixtures to place or fix to the wall.
