Think of fabric as a filter: the lampshade diffuses light instead of bouncing it back, giving a soft glow with no harsh reflection on the walls and no glare when you look at the lamp. The whole selection is dressed in fabric, mounted on metal, steel or aluminium, with an IP20 rating and mostly E27 sockets: enough to light a living room, a bedroom, a dining room or a hallway.

Why does a fabric lamp shade a softer light?
A fabric lampshade does not bounce light back like glass or bare metal: it lets light through and spreads it. As a result, the wall behind the lamp stays matte, the ceiling brightens gently and the eye receives no direct glare. That is what makes these fabric lamps comfortable above a table, next to a sofa or by a bedside, including in rooms where you stay for hours in the evening.
What is the fabric on a lamp called?
The part is called a lampshade. Here it is pleated or taut fabric, mounted on a metal frame around an E27, E14 or G9 socket. The cylindrical shape dominates, followed by the tube, the square and the oval. To compare the families and colours, browse all the home lighting.
Round, square or tube shapes: which fabric lampshade?
The round shape, very common, gives even light in every direction: it is the safe choice for a hallway as well as a living room. The tube slims the silhouette and suits narrow pendants placed above a worktop. The square brings a graphic look, useful under a low ceiling, and the oval stretches the design above an island or a desk. The most free-form shapes are in the uniquely designed pieces.
Which fabric lamp for the living room, bedroom, dining room or kitchen?
The living room accounts for most uses, ahead of the bedroom, dining room, kitchen and then the hallway. Each room calls for a different family and a specific check: diameter and cable length in the living room, socket in the bedroom, hanging height above the table. Check these three details on the product page before drilling.
Kitchen lighting: pendant or ceiling light above the worktop?
Above a worktop, a compact pendant set at eye level lights the area without getting in the way. A ceiling light works if the passage is narrow. Compare the formats in modern kitchen lighting and, for the finest lines, in design lighting for kitchens.
Fabric chandelier for a bedroom or bedside lamp?
A low pendant or a chandelier with several shades structures a large bedroom, while a fabric bedside lamp handles reading without lighting the whole room. The Dantello bedside lamp sits on a nightstand with an E27 socket. For the dining room, see dining room lighting.
| Room | Suitable type | What to check | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Living room | Pendant, chandelier, ceiling light or floor lamp | Lampshade diameter and cable length | Nébra pendant |
| Bedroom | Low pendant or bedside lamp | E27 or E14 socket, warm white light | Dantello bedside lamp |
| Dining room | Pendant above the table | Adjustable height, number of shades | Dorvia six-shade chandelier |
| Kitchen | Pendant or ceiling light near the worktop | Compact format and socket | Jovita pendant |
| Hallway | Ceiling light or wall light | Small diameter, IP20 | Aveline wall light |
| Toilet and entrance | Small-diameter ceiling light | Clear height in the passage | Simone ceiling light Ø 52 cm |
Pendant, ceiling light, chandelier, wall light or floor lamp in fabric: which shape to choose?
The pendant lights a precise area and is height adjustable: the ceiling light, meanwhile, lights widely without hanging into the passage. A chandelier with several shades structures a large room, the wall light frees up the floor and the floor lamp brings a movable extra light. Choose the gesture first, then the diameter.
Fabric ceiling light: round or square?
The round shape suits hallways and bedrooms, with diameters of 52 cm here, fitted with E27 and 60 W. The square, like the Roslinissa LED ceiling light at 55 x 55 cm, makes more of a statement in a contemporary living or dining room. The Simone ceiling light Ø 52 cm shows the round silver format, and hanging lights gathers the models that hang from the ceiling, including black hanging lights.
Fabric floor lamp: where to place it in the living room?
A floor lamp goes behind a sofa or next to an armchair, within reach, to light without switching on the ceiling. An arc model brings light above the reading corner without taking up floor space. The Caldano arc floor lamp provides that extra light. See also standing floor lamps.
Which socket and bulb for a fabric lamp?
The E27 socket comes first, ahead of integrated LED, E14 and G9. A warm white bulb, around 2700 to 3500 K, passes through fabric better than a very cold light: the result stays warm and the colours in the room do not turn blue. Check the maximum wattage stated on the product page, it varies from one model to another.
E27, E14, G9 or integrated LED: how to recognise your socket?
E27 is the large screw socket, found on the pendants, ceiling lights and floor lamps in the selection. The smaller E14 fits wall lights, armed chandeliers and some ceiling lights. G9 clips onto small modules, and integrated LED cannot be replaced. Compare the technologies in LED lighting for the living room, with the Jovita pendant in 30 W LED.
Which colour temperature under a fabric lampshade?
Stay in warm white: under fabric, a cold light above 4000 K flattens the warm tones of wood and beige. Around 3000 K, the light stays white but soft, suited to the living room as well as the bedroom. That is the reference found on most product pages in the selection.
| Socket | Wattages found | Bulb to use | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| E27 | 15 W to 100 W | E27 warm white bulb 2700-3500 K | Nébra pendant, Simone ceiling light, Caldano floor lamp |
| E14 | 40 W | E14 bulb | Aveline wall light, Dorvia chandelier, Tessameta ceiling light |
| G9 | 8 W | G9 bulb | Quiteria pendant |
| Integrated LED | 30 W | No bulb to change | Jovita pendant |
At what height should a fabric pendant hang above a dining table?
Place the bottom of the lampshade about 75 to 85 cm above the tabletop: the light falls on the table and not into the guests' eyes. The cable of the fabric pendants in the selection is adjustable, with a maximum height given page by page (for example 76.8 cm or 126 cm depending on the model): read it before drilling. For a large table, a chandelier with several shades spreads the light better, like the Dorvia six-shade chandelier.
How to care for a fabric lampshade and remove a pen stain?
Dust dry with a soft brush or a microfibre cloth, without wetting the fabric. For a stain, dab without rubbing with a cloth barely dampened with warm soapy water, after testing on a hidden area. Never soak the lampshade: the frame and the socket do not like water.
How to remove pen from fabric without damaging the lampshade?
Dab the mark with a cotton bud soaked in 70% alcohol, without spreading towards the outside of the stain. Change the cotton bud each time, then let it dry in the open air, away from a heat source. Many lampshades can be removed: working flat limits drips. Light shades are easier to spot on beige lampshades.
How to dust a fabric ceiling light?
Switch off the power, remove the lampshade if the fitting allows, then run a soft brush over the taut or pleated fabric. For pleated fabric, a soft paintbrush reaches the folds without crushing them. Avoid a vacuum cleaner with a hard brush, which marks the fibres, and refit everything once dry.
Black, white, gold or beige fabric lamp: which colour for which room?
A black lampshade absorbs light and concentrates it downwards: it structures a room without brightening the ceiling. A white or beige one diffuses it more widely and visually enlarges the room. A gold or silver one plays with reflection and adds a more dressed-up touch. In the living room, black and gold dominate; in the bedroom, light tones soften.
White fabric ceiling light or beige fabric chandelier?
White suits rooms where you want useful light: hallway, kitchen, small bedroom. Beige and ivory tones warm up a living room or dining room and pair well with wood. For an entrance, a beige chandelier with several arms adds relief without darkening the passage.
A coloured lamp in a neutral interior, a good idea?
Yes, as long as you do not multiply the shades: a single coloured model is enough to wake up a grey, white or wood interior. The boldest versions are found among blue shades and design pendants for living rooms.
Do you need a dimmer, and which wattage for a fabric lamp?
Only some models accept a dimmer: compatibility is stated on the product page. The budget follows the size of the lampshade, the number of light points and the material of the frame, from an affordable piece to an exceptional one. Look first at the use: extra light or main lighting.
How many watts for a fabric lamp?
On the models in the selection, wattages range from 8 W in G9 to 100 W in E27, with common steps at 15 W, 30 W, 40 W and 60 W. A room of 15 to 20 m² is satisfied with an E27 bulb of 40 to 60 W in warm white, complemented by an extra light. Stay below the maximum wattage of the socket.
Which models accept a dimmer?
The Nébra pendant and the Caldano arc floor lamp are among the compatible pieces. Check the dimmer mention before buying the bulb: not all of them support it. For more dressed-up projects, compare luxury lighting.
Why is a fabric lamp easier to match than a glass or bare metal lamp?
The matte surface of fabric breaks reflections, where glass and bare metal bounce light and show marks. Two references are enough: take the lampshade colour from the tone of the nearest wall, and the size according to the table or worktop to light, without exceeding half the width of the furniture. A light grey or black lampshade works in almost any contemporary interior.
Frequently asked questions
Original decorative lighting: which fabric models stand out from the classic?
Look for wavy tube shapes, geometrically patterned lampshades and multi-arm pieces. A large-diameter black pleated pendant, a gold pendant with a geometric pattern or a gold chandelier with six ivory cylindrical shades make more of a statement than a plain round ceiling light. These pieces are centred above a table or a large sofa.
What are the trending lights for the living room?
The living room is turning to cylindrical fabric lampshades, often black, gold or silver, carried by an adjustable pendant or a large-diameter ceiling light. Tube shapes, pleated fabrics and multi-light models add relief without glare. The criterion that ages best remains the plain cylinder.
How to wire two lights on one outlet?
Connect the two lights in parallel in a junction box, add up their wattages (from 8 W on an integrated LED piece to 100 W on a large pendant) and check that the circuit supports them. Switch off the breaker before working; if in doubt, call an electrician.
