Allow one wall light every two to three metres of climb, fixed at hand height on the side wall: every step stays readable and nobody is dazzled on the way down. This collection brings together stair wall lights designed for the staircase, mostly in metal or steel, with G9, E14, E27 or G4 sockets, all LED and mostly IP20 for indoor use.
Which wall light for a staircase?
A stair wall light is chosen according to the wall that receives it and the light it has to give. The models in this collection are in metal, steel or aluminium, mostly with G9, E14 or E27 sockets, in IP20 for indoor use. Spread the points along the climb to avoid shadow zones.
Which socket to choose between G9, E14, E27 and G4?
The G9 largely dominates the selection: small, it slips into a compact body such as the Form n°4, wall light with G9 socket, 8 W, or into the brushed steel of the Cylo, up and down beam in brushed steel. The E14 offers more choice of decorative bulbs, the E27 suits large exposed bulbs such as on the Mori, metal and wood wall light in E27, and the G4 remains reserved for very small volumes, for example the Pael, ball stair wall light in metal. Choose the socket according to the bulb you want to be able to replace.
How many light points should be planned in a stairwell?
One point every two to three metres of wall is enough in most cases, following the line of the climb. On a narrow staircase, a single row on the free wall avoids visual overload. The whole set can be found in the selection of stair wall lights.
Indoor stair wall light: which LED model to choose?
Indoors, an LED stair wall light is chosen on its socket and its material. This collection mainly offers G9, E14 and E27 sockets in metal or steel, in IP20, with warm white colour temperatures of 2700 to 3500 K. Square, cylindrical or spiral shapes light the step without dazzling. The collection counts 314 products, this page presents a selection of them.
Do you need a powerful LED wall light on a staircase?
The wattages given in the selection range from 3 W to 40 W depending on the model. On a staircase, too strong a light creates reflections on the stair nosings and tires the eye: several moderate points are better than a single source. Only some of the models accept a dimmer, which allows lowering the level in the evening. To look widely, browse the LED wall models and the indoor wall lights.
Warm white or cool white for an indoor staircase?
Warm white 2700 to 3500 K remains the usual reference in a circulation area: it extends the mood of the living rooms and flatters wood. Cool white 4500 to 6500 K, rarer in this collection, is reserved for technical areas or service staircases, where a crisp rendering is wanted. Stay on a single temperature from the bottom up to the landing to avoid breaks in tone.
Stair wall light with motion sensor: how does it work?
A stair wall light with a sensor switches on as you pass and switches off after a delay, which avoids looking for the switch in a stairwell. The product sheets in this collection do not mention an integrated sensor: triggering is managed in the installation, by a wall sensor or a two-way switch.
Motion sensor or two-way switch?
A two-way switch controls the same wall light from the bottom and the top of the staircase: simple, reliable, with no setting. A sensor adds automatic switching, handy for a staircase used at night or by elderly people. Both set-ups can coexist on the same circuit, provided the sensor is designed for the load of LED luminaires.
Can a sensor be added to an existing installation?
Yes, most often by replacing a switch with a wall sensor of the same dimensions, or by adding it upstream of the circuit. Switch off the power at the breaker and check the number of available wires before opening a back box. For compatible shapes, see all our wall lights.
Outdoor stair wall light: which weatherproof outdoor wall light?
For an outdoor staircase, a high protection rating is needed: two models in the collection are IP65, in aluminium, against IP20 for most indoor wall lights. IP65 resists water splashes. Plan for this level as soon as a step is exposed to rain or run-off.
IP20 or IP65: what does the protection rating mean?
IP20 protects against finger contact and ordinary dust, but not against water: it remains reserved for dry rooms, indoor staircase, hallway, bedroom. IP65 adds resistance to splashes, which covers a facade wall, a garden staircase or a bathroom. Look at this rating before colour and shape.
Which aluminium model for an outdoor staircase?
The Uaso, aluminium cube IP65 for outdoor use diffuses upwards and downwards, in a 10 x 10 x 10 cm format, in white or black. A second aluminium IP65 model, in a flatter format and a graphite finish, completes the outdoor offer. For indoor use, turn instead to the bathroom wall lights when humidity is temporary.
How to install a wall light on a staircase?
The wall light is fitted on the side wall of the staircase, at hand height to light the step without dazzling the person coming down, aligning the points along the whole climb. Switch off the power, locate the conduit, fix the supplied bracket, connect, then close up and test.
At what height should the wall light be placed?
Around one metre to one metre twenty from the stair nosing, the light falls on the step without reaching the eyes. On a stringer wall, follow the slope to keep the same relative height all the way. An adjustable blade, as on the Volto, wood-look wall light with adjustable beam, allows adjustment after fitting without taking it down again.
How to run the cables and connect the luminaire?
Locate the conduits with a detector before drilling, then supply 230 V from a nearby back box. Models with G9, E14 or E27 sockets are connected to the terminal block on the bracket, not to the bulb. Once the power is back on, test the switching before refitting the cover. The range of hallway wall lights follows the same installation logic.
Designer stair wall light: which style for which decoration?
The style of the wall light decides the mood: minimalist models in glass and black steel stay discreet, gold or brass versions bring a warm light, cane and wood give a chic country feel. Choose the colour of the wall and the staircase first, then the shape.
Chic country wall light: which wood and metal model?
The Pira, cane lantern for a country feel, combines rattan, cane and metal in a 21 x 40 cm format, in E27: the fibres filter the light and draw soft shadows on the wall. The Mori, metal and wood wall light in E27, plays the same card more soberly, with an exposed bulb. These two models also suit a dining room or a kitchen open onto the circulation area.
Boho chic or minimalist wall light: which mood?
Boho chic plays on natural materials and a warm light, minimalist on black, grey and silver, with clean volumes such as the chrome Spirale, spiral shape in steel or the square modules in glass and black steel. To decide, compare the modern styles and the ball shapes.
Living room, hallway or bedroom wall light: can the same wall light be used elsewhere?
Yes, many wall lights in this collection are listed for the staircase, the hallway, the entrance and the bedroom, and some also for the living room, the dining room or the kitchen. Black and white dominate, which allows the same model to be repeated on several walls of the same floor.
Modern living room wall light: which version to choose?
The Seli, glass ball and brass, in E14, mixes brass, glass and marble for a warm rendering that works from the living room to the staircase. A model in glass and steel, in black or gold, keeps the same line from one floor to another: see the living room wall lights, the gold wall lights and the black finishes.
Which wall light for a toilet or a designer WC?
A small format is enough, with a warm, diffuse light placed at shoulder height. The white models blend into a light wall, while a metal finish brings character to a small volume. The same model suits a bedroom wall lamp or a study.
How many wall lights should be planned in a stairwell and how to spread them?
The number depends on the length of the wall and the ceiling height: the aim is regular lighting so that every step is readable, without multiplying the points. Alternate the points on either side if the staircase is wide, and keep the same model for a consistent rendering.
Spreading the light over landings and half-levels
Mark each landing with a point, then spread the others evenly between the bottom and the top, avoiding placing a wall light directly opposite a window or a mirror. An up and down beam, as on the Cylo in brushed steel, lights two levels from a single point.
A single repeated model or several mixed shapes?
Repeating a single model, with identical socket and temperature, gives the calmest reading. Mixing shapes only works if the material and colour stay constant, for example matte black from the bottom up to the landing. To decide between an affordable model and a more striking piece, compare the affordable models and the rest of the Designix lighting catalogue, then browse the glass versions if you are looking for a transparency effect. Almost the entire selection is covered by a two-year warranty.

Frequently asked questions about the stair wall light
What are the different types of staircase lighting?
A distinction is made between the wall light, fitted on the side wall or the landing wall, lighting recessed into the step, and the luminaire suspended above the stairwell. In this collection, everything is an LED wall light, in metal or steel, with a G9, E14, E27 or G4 socket depending on the model.
Which LED wall light for a staircase?
Favour an LED model with a G9 or E14 socket, which remains replaceable and compatible with a warm white bulb of 2700 to 3500 K. This collection offers them in metal, steel, glass or aluminium, mostly in IP20 for indoor use, with a square, round, ball or spiral shape depending on the rendering sought.
Can an outdoor stair wall light in IP65 be installed?
Yes, provided a model rated IP65 is chosen: two references in the collection are, in aluminium, one of them in the shape of an LED cube. IP65 resists water splashes, unlike IP20 which is reserved for dry rooms. Check the rating before any fitting on a wall exposed to run-off.
Which original wall light for a staircase?
Models with a striking shape stand out from the classic square: chrome spiral, ball, cage or lantern. Some exist in a gold, beige or yellow finish, which creates a direct contrast on a light wall. To stay in the chic country spirit, cane and wood pair well with a wooden staircase.
How to care for a metal or glass wall light?
Switch off the power, dust the metal bracket and the glass part dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid abrasive products and sprayed water on an IP20 model. For a gold or brushed aluminium wall light, a microfibre cloth is enough to preserve the finish, without taking the luminaire off the wall.
