Vintage pendant light for kitchens: light that ages well

Hang your pendant light 75 cm above the worktop and choose a diameter equal to one third of the width of your table. A filament bulb with an E27 base, 2700 K, is enough for the ambience. Keep bright light for the prep area.

Which light fitting for a kitchen?

A pendant light above the table or island, plus wall lighting over the work areas. Allow for three light points minimum in a 10 m² kitchen. Stay between 2700 K and 3000 K for ambience, go up to 4000 K above the prep surface.

Which vintage pendant light material for your kitchen?

Amber glass Patinated metal Enamelled ceramic Woven rattan
Light given Golden, soft, without glare Neutral, directed at the worktop Matte and very diffuse Warm, with graphic shadows
Dominant style 1950s to 1970s Industrial Mediterranean retro Bohemian, 1970s
Care Dry microfibre, never abrasive products Soft cloth, wipe away fingerprints Damp sponge then dry immediately Dust with a soft brush
To place above Table and worktop Island and splashback Round table Open dining area

Amber glass diffuses a golden light, but it keeps fingerprints. Patinated metal takes knocks and improves with age. Enamelled ceramic is heavy, so check the fixing point. Woven rattan casts graphic shadows, which suits an island well. Our selection of kitchen chandeliers shows these finishes assembled and photographed under warm light.

  • Ambience: the pendant light above the table, at 2700 K
  • Work: wall light or under-cabinet strip, at 3000 K to 4000 K
  • Circulation: ceiling light or spotlights, on a separate switch

Three points are enough for 10 to 15 m². Beyond that, it is better to prioritise than to stack: our advice on choosing the kitchen pendant light details the flows according to surface area.

Which pendant light above a kitchen island?

Two or three pendant lights aligned, spaced 60 to 80 cm apart, at 85 cm from the surface. A single 40 cm model above a 2 m island leaves the ends in shadow. The gap is measured between the edges of the shades, never between the cords.

On an L-shaped island or beyond three points, the distribution changes: our guide to multiple pendant lights above an island gives the spacing and heights.

Pendant light or ceiling light: which holds up in a working kitchen?

A ceiling light illuminates widely and does not drop into the field of vision. A pendant light defines the dining area. In a kitchen that entertains, keep both: useful light on the ceiling, style above the table.

An LED ceiling light at 3000 K does this job without competing with the pendant light.

What remains is the layout, which is decided before drilling: a separate circuit for ambience, heights of points set with a line, switches within reach.

This is the subject of a kitchen and dining room lighting project carried out room by room, from plan to installation.

Which pendant light above a rectangular table?

Aim for a diameter equal to one third of the table width and 75 to 80 cm between the shade and the tabletop. A 90 cm table therefore calls for a 30 cm pendant light. Beyond 2 m long, go for two light points rather than a giant model.

Two pendant lights above the same table are chosen as a pair, not by approximate resemblance: our selection of dining room lighting lends itself to this duo.

How do you offset a pendant light?

Move the ceiling fixing point and let the cord drop vertically: up to 60 cm of offset, the eye notices nothing. Beyond that, a swivel ceiling rose or a rail avoids the diagonal cord.

Vintage pendant light 1950s, 1970s or 1930s: what really changes

The decade decides the material and the beam, not just the style. Our article on vintage lighting details the codes of each period.

Decade Materials Light given
1930s moulded glass, brass, opaline diffuse, warm white, little contrast
1950s lacquered metal, bakelite directed downwards, clean cone
1970s rattan, wood, smoked glass amber, graphic shadows

Patinated metal needs an open shade, otherwise it throws a hard cone onto the table. For this register, see the industrial-style lamp: same volumes, same directed light.

  • Cord or chain: height adjustable to the millimetre, thrifted look
  • Textile cable: can be cut and readjusted, without dismantling
  • Rigid rod: fixed height, best reserved for high ceilings

One question often goes unanswered before drilling: the real result. Designix's Google listing gathers verifiable customer feedback, kept continuously up to date.

Before drilling: the checklist for a vintage pendant light in a kitchen

  • Measure the clear height between the worktop and the fixing point
  • Check the weight of the light fitting and the nature of the support (solid slab, plasterboard, beam)
  • Calculate the diameter in relation to the width of the table or island
  • Note the required base (E27, E14, G9) and the maximum wattage indicated on the socket
  • Provide a filament bulb to keep the warm tint of the tinted glass
  • Check dimmer compatibility if the switch is dimmable

How do you light a kitchen with a vintage pendant light?

Keep the original base and change the bulb: E27 filament, 6 to 8 W, 2700 K, on a dimmer. This is what gives the amber light of a vintage pendant light without heating the glass or consuming as it did back then. The rest depends on the installation height.

Which base and which bulb to keep the vintage spirit?

The base is read on the socket, not on the product sheet.

  • E27: large glass, metal or rattan shades
  • E14: small cones, single-shade pendant lights
  • G9: enamelled ceramics with a compact socket

Once yours is identified, E27 filament bulbs at 2700 K give the original amber tint.

All the models in our pendant lighting range have an adjustable cable: the height can be corrected after installation, without drilling again.

If two diameters seem possible above your worktop, describe the room to us: you can talk to a Designix advisor, who will advise on height and format before purchase.

How do you light a kitchen worktop?

Light that comes straight down, without a shadow cast by the hand. An under-cabinet wall light or strip at 4000 K, switched separately from the ambience. The vintage pendant light stays above the table, not above the sink.

To combine the two without losing the character of the room, the principles of modern kitchen lighting also apply to a thrifted kitchen.

Which light fitting for a white kitchen?

Amber glass or cream enamelled ceramic: on white, material matters more than shape. A matte model structures the room, a glossy model saturates it with reflections. Allow for a pendant light above the table and a wall complement near the sink.

White kitchen: which colour temperature?

Between 2700 K and 3000 K. Above 4000 K, the white of the cabinets turns grey.

Temperature Rendering Where to use it
2700 K very warm white wood, copper, amber glass
3000 K warm white matte white kitchen
4000 K neutral white worktop, prep
6500 K cool white avoid on white, everything turns blue

A multi-arm chandelier and a single-cord pendant light do not draw the same thing on the ceiling of a white room. Our comparison to distinguish a chandelier from a pendant light helps you decide according to the volumes.

  • A single family of tints on all the points in the room
  • A dimmer to go from dining to tidying up
  • Matte shades rather than glossy on white

Mixing two temperatures on the same white wall is immediately noticeable. So choose all the lighting in the room from a single family of tints.

Kitchen wall light or ceiling light as a complement?

A wall light near the sink if the wall is free, a ceiling light if the ceiling is low. The wall light illuminates the area without taking up the worktop, at about 1.60 m from the floor.

According to a survey of our catalogue on 12 October 2026, the vintage wall lights for kitchens collection has 204 references: enough to keep the same handwriting as the pendant light.

Vintage pendant light in the kitchen: the questions that keep coming up

Which pendant light should you put in a kitchen?
A pendant light with one or two drops above the table or island, never in the circulation axis: in a kitchen, it lights the dining area. Choose a material that is easy to clean, cooking grease settles on textured shades as well as on glass.
What are vintage decoration ideas for a kitchen?
Three ideas that hold up: a tinted glass pendant light above the table, a small wall light above the worktop, and a visible filament bulb. Stay within a single family of materials — glass, brass, ceramic — to avoid a patchwork.
What are the trendy light fittings for the kitchen?
Warm materials: amber or smoked glass, brushed brass, enamelled ceramic, woven rattan. Shapes stay simple — globe, cone, bell — and it is the visible bulb that gives the character. Light kitchens adopt them especially to warm up the room.
What lights brighter, cool white or warm white?
Cool white lights more strongly at equal power, but it flattens the warm materials of vintage. Above a table, aim for a warm white, around 2700 K; reserve cool white for work areas where you prep.
How do you offset a pendant light?
You offset it by playing with the ceiling rose and the cable length: an off-centre ceiling rose or a cable path on the ceiling brings the fixing point above the worktop without touching the electrical supply.
