120 cm diameter pendant light: how to choose it well

Measure the table and the volume: a 120 cm diameter needs a table at least 200 cm long, or an open living room of 25 m². Allow 60 to 70 cm between the bottom of the shade and the tabletop, and 80 cm of clear space around the fixture. Below that, 120 cm overwhelms the room.

What size should a pendant light be?

A diameter is chosen in relation to what sits beneath it: the table, the sofa, the open space. For a dining area, aim for between one third and one half of the table length. 120 cm sits at the upper end: large table, open living room, a volume that breathes.

120 cm pendant light: for what room volume?

It needs air around it. Allow at least 25 m², or an open living room that absorbs the span. Above a table, 200 cm long and 90 cm wide. The pendant light collection brings together 7,608 references as of 29 September 2026: diameter, material and socket are filtered in the same place.

In a tighter space, a 100 cm diameter plays the same role without saturating the room.

Moving from one format to another, up to the 150 cm of large volumes, is covered in our article on the large diameter pendant light.

Diameter Matching table Room Effect
40 to 50 cm 2 to 4 settings, 120 cm Dining nook, hallway Focused, discreet
60 to 80 cm 4 to 6 settings, 140 to 160 cm Classic dining room Balance
100 cm 6 settings, 180 cm 20 m² living room Strong presence
120 cm 8 settings, 200 cm and more Living room of 25 m² and more Statement piece
150 cm 250 cm and more, or a hall Double height Architectural statement

The guide to dimensions and styles sets out these benchmarks for chandeliers and pendant lights.

Which pendant light with a low ceiling?

At 2.40 m, a 120 cm model is still possible if it is flat: a slim disc, a shade 20 to 25 cm high, a stem shortened to the minimum. What causes trouble is not the diameter, it is the drop between the shade and the table. A 120 cm ceiling light, mounted flush to the ceiling, solves this point.

  • Ceiling at 2.40 m: a flat 120 cm model, direct mounting or a very short stem
  • Ceiling at 2.50 m: a 120 cm dome works, with 60 cm down to the tabletop
  • Beam or uneven slab: an off-centre point corrected with a decorative ceiling rose
  • Walkway: 210 cm clear beneath the shade

One large fixture, several pendant lights or a ceiling light?

One pendant light Ø 120 cm Several pendant lights of Ø 40-50 cm A large diameter ceiling light
Best suited room Dining room, living room, hall Kitchen with island, long living room Corridor, bedroom, room with low height
Table or surface to light Round or rectangular table for 6 to 8 settings Island or long table No table beneath the fixture
Height of the bottom of the fixture 70 to 80 cm above the tabletop 75 to 85 cm above the tabletop 30 to 40 cm below the ceiling
Effect in the room A focal point that structures the space A regular rhythm along the worktop Raking light, discreet presence
Maintenance and installation One point to clean, one connection Several points to clean, several connections Easy access, reduced height

All sizes can be compared in the lighting catalogue, from the small point of light to the large volume.

The selection is reviewed by buyers, and the verifiable reviews on the Designix Google listing remain available before you decide.

Which pendant light above a rectangular table?

The diameter is set by the length, not the width of the tabletop: between one half and two thirds for a large format. A table of 180 to 200 cm therefore takes a 120 cm model, provided you keep 75 cm of clear space on each side for serving and moving around.

What is the ratio between diameter and table length?

A single round fixture must stay anchored to the length. A 120 cm model over a 200 cm table leaves 40 cm of shade on each side: that is the reasonable maximum. Beyond that, part of the light falls into empty space and the tabletop darkens at the ends.

One pendant light or several points above a table?

Two or three small points are often better than one large disc over a very long table: the light is distributed, the eye moves. Beyond 220 cm, prefer two pendant lights of 50 to 60 cm aligned, or a horizontal bar.

  • Table up to 180 cm: a single point, from 80 to 120 cm
  • Table of 200 to 240 cm: two points of 50 to 60 cm, spaced 60 cm apart
  • Table of 240 cm and more: three points, or an elongated dining room pendant light
  • Kitchen island: two or three off-centre points, never a single one in the middle

The same logic applies to pendant lights above an island, where the gap between the points matters more than their size.

Before ordering a 120 cm pendant light

  • Measure the ceiling height and the desired distance between the floor and the bottom of the fixture
  • Compare the diameter with the length of the table or island
  • Check the weight of the fixture and the nature of the ceiling support
  • Note the socket (E27, G9) and the technology (LED) before planning for bulbs
  • Check the protection rating according to the room: IP20 in a living room, IP44 in a wet area
  • Decide whether the intensity should vary: dimmable bulb and compatible control

How do you adjust the height of a pendant light?

Measure from the tabletop, never from the floor. Allow 60 to 70 cm between the bottom of the shade and the table, 75 to 85 cm above a worktop, and 210 cm of clearance in a walkway. An adjustable pendant light is set once, then no longer moves.

What height for a pendant light above a table?

The 60 to 70 cm benchmark applies to a 2.50 m ceiling. With a high ceiling, the distance grows: 80 to 90 cm under 3 m, even more in a double height, otherwise the fixture floats above the meal.

How do you recognise a height-adjustable model?

Look at the cable length and the locking method: a threaded rod can be cut, a cable is locked with a cable clamp. A height-adjustable pendant light can be adjusted without tools, which leaves some margin after installation. Also check the weight of the fixture and the type of ceiling fixing.

If your room has a constraint that measurements cannot solve (low ceiling, beam, hollow slab), describe it to us: you can ask Designix for advice before ordering.

Weight matters as much as diameter. From a survey of 92 pendant lights in our catalogue as of 29 September 2026, 38% declare glass and 87% metal; rattan remains the lightest option. Glass pendant lights diffuse a softer light, and require a fixing that keeps up.

Which pendant light for a bedroom or a living room?

In a bedroom, stay between 60 and 80 cm unless the room exceeds 20 m², where an openwork 120 cm model finds its place. In a living room of 25 m² and more, the 120 cm model replaces the central ceiling light and frees up the floor.

Which pendant light in a bedroom?

The pendant light goes in the centre of the volume, not above the bed, and its light should stay soft in the evening. Bedroom fixtures are filtered by diameter and by declared room, which avoids installing a 120 cm model in 12 m².

  • Bedroom of 12 to 16 m²: 40 to 60 cm, or a ceiling light
  • Bedroom of more than 20 m²: an openwork 120 cm model, short stem
  • Colour: 71% of the survey declares black, 57% white, to pair with the headboard

A large pendant light also changes how a room is perceived and acts as a landmark when the space is bare.

Which pendant light in a living room?

The 120 cm model structures the sofa area and replaces the central light. In the survey of 92 pendant lights as of 29 September 2026, 80% declare the "Living room" as their destination. The living room pendant light is therefore chosen as much for its light as for its silhouette.

To go further on large surfaces, our article on lighting a large living room details the layers of light to combine.

In which room will your 120 cm pendant light be installed?

Your questions about large diameter pendant lights

What size should a pendant light be?
It all depends on the surface to be lit and the table below. Above a table, the diameter of the fixture is generally between one half and two thirds of the tabletop length or the table diameter. A 120 cm model therefore targets a large table or a large volume.
What height for a pendant light above a table?
Allow 70 to 80 cm between the bottom of the fixture and the tabletop: no one bumps their head when getting up, and the light falls on the plates rather than in the eyes. Allow some margin if the model has adjustable wires or a chain.
How do you adjust the height of a pendant light?
Cut the power, loosen the ring or cable clamp at the fixing point, slide the wire to the desired height and tighten again. Always measure from the bottom of the fixture to the tabletop, not from the ceiling, and check that all the points of a multiple installation stay aligned.
Which pendant light in a bedroom?
In a bedroom, the pendant light is better placed in the centre of the volume, with a warm light and moderate intensity. A large diameter works there if the ceiling height allows it; otherwise, a more compact model above the bedside tables is more comfortable to live with.
Which pendant light for a cathedral ceiling?
A very high ceiling calls for a fixture whose wires hang low enough to bring the light down to living height. A large diameter helps fill the volume and avoid the effect of a lost point of light. Plan for an adjustable pendant light and easy access to change the bulbs.
