High-ceiling pendant light: getting the measurements right

Measure the clear height between the floor and the fixing point, then drop the cable until it reaches 2.10 m above the floor over a walkway. Above a 4 m ceiling, a single pendant is no longer enough: spread several light points at different heights.

Which light fitting for a high ceiling?

A large-diameter pendant light, between 80 and 120 cm, or an assembly of several pendants staggered in height. It is not the style that decides, it is the volume of air to dress. Under a 4 m ceiling, a single piece is enough; beyond that, the number of light points changes everything.

A high ceiling forgives nothing: too small, the pendant disappears into the void; too low, it crushes the room. Everything starts with the measurement, and the guide to pendant measurements details that calculation.

Large-diameter pendant or a cluster of pendants?

A large diameter structures a wide volume, a cluster of pendants fills a tall volume. In a hall, the two often combine.

Criterion Large-diameter pendant Cluster of pendants
Target volume Wide room, moderate ceiling Tall void, hall, stairwell
Effect Readable mass of light Cascade, vertical rhythm
Adjustment A single cable to adjust Several cables, staggered heights
Watch point Diameter in proportion to the table Load spread over several points

Which light fitting for a large living room or a hall?

For a high-ceiling living room or hall, aim for a multi-tier chandelier or an open pendant, with a cable that drops down to the living area.

  • Double-height hall: one statement piece dropped to 2.20 m above the floor
  • Cathedral living room: two or three light points at different levels
  • Mezzanine: the cable stops above the guard rail line
  • Large living space: the fitting follows the table or the sofa

On a double height, a chandelier for a cathedral ceiling is chosen as much on the available cable length as on the diameter.

Which solution for which large volume?

Open XXL pendant Cluster at staggered heights Chandelier with long cable
Where it works Cathedral living room, hall Very tall void, stairwell Living room, dining area
What fills the void A wide diameter Vertical repetition The length of the cable
Effect on the room A deliberate focal point A gentle descent of light Anchoring of the volume
Maintenance Dusting at height Several points to clean A single point, but high up
Materials seen on our pages Metal, Glass, Acrylic Iron, Steel, Aluminium Smoked glass, Black metal
Watch point Weight and cable length Number of fixing points Load taken up by the structure

Once the format is settled, all that remains is to check the diameters actually available in large and in multi-tier cascade formats. Our selection of large XXL pendant lights serves as a reference on this point.

At what height should a pendant hang under a high ceiling?

Drop the cable until it reaches 2.10 m above the floor over a circulation area, and allow 75 to 85 cm between the shade and a worktop or a table. It is the distance to the floor that is adjusted, never the distance to the ceiling.

Light fitting under a 5 m ceiling: where does the cable stop?

With a 5 m ceiling, there is still almost 3 m of drop to bring the bottom of the fitting to eye level. That length is checked before purchase, not after installation.

  • Under 3 m: a standard pendant is enough, cable shortened on installation
  • Between 3 and 5 m: the drop determines the choice of model
  • Beyond 5 m: the cable is extended or replaced, it is not improvised
  • Walkway: never less than 2.10 m clear under the shade

Cathedral ceiling: set the height on the sight line

Under a cathedral ceiling, the height is set on what the eye travels through. The lowest point of the fitting reads in line with the windows or the mezzanine.

Volume Adjustment reference What to avoid
Standard ceiling Short cable, bottom of the fitting 2.10 m above the floor The fitting that blocks the view
5 m ceiling Long drop, reference at floor level The model lost in the void
Cathedral ceiling Alignment on the sight line The cable that cuts across a window
Stairwell Stop above the landing The fitting in the walkway

If your room has an unusual volume, tell us its height and floor area: we will reply on the model and the adjustment to plan. It is the shortest route, and the page to describe your volume to our team is exactly for that.

The proportions and fixing of a high chandelier are worked out together, never one without the other.

Knowing how to choose the dimensions of a chandelier avoids the classic model that is too small, the one you regret six months later. The catalogue of pendant lights is then browsed with those measurements in hand.

How do you fix a heavy chandelier to the ceiling safely?

The fitting is taken up on an anchor fixed into the structure, never on the electrical box alone. A hook anchored in the floor structure or a crossbar between joists carries the load; the box only carries the current.

Fixing a chandelier to the ceiling with a hook

A hook holds if it is anchored in the floor structure, not in the plasterboard alone. On a hollow support, a crossbar that spreads the load does the job.

  • Hook on a beam: the safest support for a heavy chandelier
  • Crossbar between joists: spreads the load over two points
  • Box alone: suitable for a light pendant, not for a chandelier
  • Second fixing point: reassuring on large volumes
